Who: Kozue and Toru
What: Catching up on that summer homework. Chatting. Gushing.
When: Before Obon
Where: School library? idek
Why: For talking about hot boys. Clearly.

Kozue had put this off, put this off, and put this off, and then put it off some more. But part of the Kondo Family Obon Tradition was her parents and grandparents interrogating her about what her summer homework was, if she had started it, and why she was out having fun when she hadn't started it. And there were precious few days left until she had to go home and face the yearly music (well, it was more than yearly, but this particular tune was an annual favorite).

Thus, she had finally dragged herself back into the school, and down to the library, and for the first time, cracked open her books. She actually hadn't the slightest idea what the homework was, and now she was set up at a table with an iced coffee from one of the vending machines, staring at her texts in a mixture of confusion and resigned glumness.

Ugh. Every year she hoped it was an elaborate hoax and the assignment sheet would actually read "You Fell For It! No Homework!"

Thus far, she had been disappointed every year.

Kozue wasn't the only first-year suffering through summer homework that day. After a nagging conviction that he had something to do haunting him ever since Renju's rescue, Toru had finally remembered that he had homework to finish. Procrastination didn't sound like such a good option; for all he knew, someone else would vanish by the time he normally did his classwork, and rescues took priority over school.

So it was that he slouched into the library, assignment sheet in hand. There was a certain table that nobody ever went near that was his favorite place for doing homework at.(Rumor had it that there had been a scandalous liason on its surface in years past; this did nothing to phase him. He hadn't even heard it.) But before he found his table, Toru noticed Kozue. Normally, this would've meant nothing. They never interacted. But now she was on the team in addition to being in his class. With considerable courage gathered, he went over to her, and tapped upon her shoulder.

"H-hey, Kondo-san... a-are you doing summer homework, too?"

Kozue had been staring in some dismay at a math problem, one that she could not for the life of her remember how to solve—or if they'd even studied it. Thus, she hadn't even noticed that Toru had come into the library—math was eating up all of her attention. When she felt a tap on her shoulder, she glanced up.

"Ishinomori-san?" Taking a moment to process, she smiled politely—it wasn't cold, by any means, but it was one of those necessary smiles. "Yes, or, at least, I'm trying. I'm not getting too far. Have you started the math part yet?"

Toru smiled back, a bit embarrassed. "I haven't started yet. N-not just the math section, b-but the whole thing. So don't feel too bad! I-I can try to help you once I get to it!"

He pulled out a chair, sitting opposite Kozue. "Two heads are better than one, right? I-if we can do the homework done together, we'll do it twice as fast!"

After a moment, he looked surprised and further embarrassed. "O-only if you want to, though!"

"Of course I want to," Kozue quickly affirmed, a smile spreading across her face. Of course she wanted help—what kind of idiot turned down help on her summer homework? And she knew Toru was a computer geek, or a video game geek, or some kind of digital geek. They were all smart, right? At least with math. Right?

She did not, however, express any of her ulterior motives for being pleased that he'd decided to join her; she merely nodded, and continued. "Thanks! It really goes by way faster with someone else to work with, and I'm pretty much putting myself to sleep here." After a moment, she added, "I only started this afternoon anyway."

Satisfied that he was, in fact, wanted there, Toru settled more comfortably in his seat and spread his pages of summer homework across the table in front of him.

"All right, th-then let's get to work!" With pencil now in hand, he began to work diligently at his assignments, looking up occasionally to ask Kozue something, or to pass on a piece of useful information.

...it looked like he'd be there a while.

Kozue managed to keep her attention on the work for a few minutes; and that was a feat. At least having someone across the table who was working gave her some inspiration—she didn't want to seem like the absolutely worst slacker on the planet, even if she really was.

But after a few minutes, she glanced up: "I don't even remember studying half of these things. I don't know—maybe I skipped this one day." She frowned. She had spent more and more school days in the Butterfly Room as the year had wound down; maybe that hadn't been the best of decisions?

Nah.

"Do you know how to do this problem?" She pointed with her pencil.

Despite images to the contrary, Toru really wasn't getting much accomplished. He was decent at math, but a slow worker. But at least he felt confident that he seemed intelligent to Kozue. To get a better view of the problem she indicated, he moved over to her side of the table.

"O-oh, that's... y-yeah, I can figure that out. I-it's kinda like..." He trailed off, mulling over what needed to be done. Math is such a waste sometimes, he complained mentally. There's really no use for it for people like us. But... At this point, Toru noticed that, embarrassingly enough, the equation he was attempting to write out came very close to the experience curve in that one RPG... It gave him the solution easily enough, but it wouldn't be of any use to explain it that way to Kozue.

"Er, if you multiply this, a-and then do this..." Toru was writing more than he was talking, now. "Y-you get to the right answer! Th-that wasn't too bad, right?"

"Not... I mean, it looks like it's right but I'm pretty lost." She sighed. It was a hopeless cause, maybe. (Nonetheless, she had the answer now. The benefits of study buddies!) "That makes sense, but how did you get from this step to this one?" She traced her question, pointing to numbers and operations.

"It's a hopeless cause, I think." She managed to be light-hearted about it; a very similar thought to Toru's was in her mind. After highschool she certainly wouldn't ever need to do math. Maybe adding or subtracting, but she could do those just fine.

"I-it's not a hopeless cause!" Toru said, optimistically revising his notes to be more accessable to his classmate's way of thinking. The optimism endured for another minute or so, as he scrawled energetically at the homework. After that, his effort died down.

"O-okay, maybe we just need a break." It was that point when he, too, hit a bit of a wall in terms of the learning curve. Maybe that would change with time, but it sure as hell wasn't changing now.

"A break sounds awesome," Kozue agreed, her voice full of conviction—a break sounded like heaven with a cherry on top. She leaned back in her chair, already in resting-mode, and reached for her can of coffee.

"So, what have you been up to over break?"

It was, for Kozue, a completely natural question; when you were sitting with someone, you made conversation, and you asked the polite questions. And there was part of her that was genuinely curious as to just what her reclusive classmate did all the time. Surely video games and the internet weren't that interesting; you had to run out eventually. Right?

Relieved that Kozue was of the same mind, Toru leaned back in his seat as she did. The relief lasted all of a few seconds, since she just had to ask about what he'd been doing over the summer.

"E-er, I, uhm...." He was now stalling, afraid to say "Oh, just playing video games and living on the Internet," a statement that put any and all of his dignity on the line.

"M-mostly just... y'know, computer stuff." With all of his natural-born tact and intelligence, he said it anyway. "W-well, I did have to camp out for a while because of Kanaye, and that room doesn't have Internet access... b-but that's mostly it..."

Toru shook his head. "Y-you really won't find out anything good from asking about my summer... b-but, how was yours?"

She smiled, but shrugged, displaying that she didn't see anything particularly fascinating about her summer, either; "Oh, it's been kind of mellow. I've been tired, so I stayed home a lot." Well, a lot in comparison to how much she went out, say, last summer; the whole 'tired' thing was a lie, of course. She'd mostly been worrying about the fact that drinking and partying and excessive sex were pretty explicitly not okay, as far as Buddhism went, and that the more she did, the worse a naraka like Renju's Paradise she'd end up in.

Tired would've been nicer.

"That room?" She tipped her head slightly. "I understand fleeing Satou—I hung out with him a bit but he was really down in the dumps. And shit-faced more often than not, I'll bet. Where did you go?"

Toru pulled a little face. "I-I don't blame you for being tired... There's been a lot to do... right?" Talking about Renju's dungeon without talking about Renju's dungeon was difficult.

"I-I stayed in the Butterfly Room... w-wasn't really anywhere else to go..." A moment's consideration forced him to revise that statement.

"...w-well, I could've stayed with Sagaki-senpai, I guess... b-but he's a little... you know."

Oh, that room. Kozue nodded, understanding. "A little like he booby-traps his room," she clarified, "at least the front door, and I bet there are all kinds of weird traps on, like, the windows and the closets, too. It'd be dangerous staying there for very long."

There were mitigating factors, of course; Max, and, maybe this was indelicate, "But he does look very good with his shirt off." Her matter of fact tone seemed to suggest that she thought Toru wouldn't be particularly moved by this information, but it should really be a matter of public record.

"Traps? Wow." Somehow, Toru was not surprised. "I-I am suddenly very glad I didn't try to go there."

And then some filter inside his mind apparently shut off. "Yeah, h-he really does! That's pretty much the only benefit."

His lips slammed shut. Oops. Too late now, Toru.

"I know, he's—" It took her own brain a moment for certain listening and decoding filters to kick in, and she stopped mid-sentence and blinked at Toru.

"Wait. You think Sagaki-senpai looks sexy with his shirt off."

Just to confirm. Her voice was a bit incredulous; she was staring in something between fascination and bewilderment.

Toru sat there, just as wide-eyed and incredulous as Kozue was, trying to hunt for the right word.

"N-no, I... he.... er... what I meant was..." He trailed off, furiously blushing. It was too late to outright deny it; the grave was already dug for his reputation, and further flustered denials would just be lowering himself further into the coffin.

"Y-yes, I-I do. B-because, well... who wouldn't?"

Kozue furrowed her brow and stared a little—kept staring a little longer after she caught herself staring—before clearing her throat and trying to find a … well, what should she... what was she supposed to...

So Ishinomori's Shadow hadn't just been trying to screw with the team when it had called Reizo its favorite—he really felt that way? About boys? It had to be that, and not a slip of the tongue, judging by how flustered and almost fuschia-red he looked and how hard he was trying to get out a full sentence, and with how little success.

How was she supposed to react to this, exactly? Standing up and shrieking was what they did in movies, but it seemed overblown and very, very rude. (She had no doubt that that's exactly what her grandmother would do, too, which was another tally against it.) She bit her lip, instead, and decided maybe careful neutrality...? But then they were talking about Tom shirtless again, which was a topic that, yes, all people should agree on. "He's totally ripped. He should, like, be in magazines." She grinned. And yet she hadn't managed to make any comment on Toru—Toru's—whatever it was.

It seemed to Toru that Kozue was deliberating over something, based on her shifting facial expressions and overall silence. He deserved it, probably. His classmate was definitely the wrong person to say such things to, and he'd gone ahead and done it because he wasn't socialized well enough to have a goddamn filter when he actually managed to speak. Great going, Ishinomori. She's just as tongue-tied as you are.

He choked on his words, appropriately enough. "T-t-totally! He's got a body like Ku... Er, a-an athlete or a movie star or something. B-but with more scars." Inwardly, Toru sighed in relief that he managed to catch himself before he compared Tom to a fictional character, as he was conditioned to do. "But, I-I dunno. Scars look pretty cool!"

"He does look like a movie star," Kozue agreed, enthusiastically, partly because he did and partly because it was something she could say that wasn't rude or stuttering or entirely mean for no reason. And it was actually… well, when she'd talked to Kiriko about this they'd disagreed and ended up talking about character and now here was someone who agreed with her (apparently) that Tom's stomach muscles were, like, kind of Adonis-like.

"There's definitely something about 'em. I mean, when they're not really awful, it like… adds a sort of mystique. It's very action movie-y." A pause. "Which fits with Sagaki-senpai, really."

If she didn't interrogate what she was doing too hard, it was just like gushing with another girl. A very tall, very alto girl.
