Who: Kanaye and Maeko
What: Random date
Where: Random anpan place. Or something.
When: Before Tom's dungeon.
Why: I like threads.

Kanaye was waiting outside the restaurant happily. He did everything happily when it came to Maeko. He'd probably cry happily.  Well, depending on why he was crying. If he was crying because she said she loved him when he was in a bad spot, he'd be happy. If he was crying because she broke up with him, he probably wouldn't be very happy.

Kanaye STILL wasn't sure why Maeko dated him, even with that spectacle at the party. For one, he was a complete and utter asshole to her best friend, not that she doesn't deserve it. For two, he was an alcoholic. He wouldn't sell her out for ANYTHING, but he'd probably come rather close. And finally, Kanaye didn't know why Maeko actually loved him. He was clingy, he was obsessive...

Not that he'd talk about these worries to her. He didn't want to give her a justification she didn't already have for dumping him. He smiled and waited.

Naturally, Maeko was unconvinced. But she was happy to hear it anyway and smiled as she patted the back of her head to make sure her ponytail was at least nearly in the middle. "Thank you."

She headed through the door, still concious that she looked messy but too cheery and relieved to finally be out of the store to really let it bother her. "I don't think it was thier fault. The train was late or something. It's a bother but they can't really be blamed for it." She seemed a little disracted as she mentionned that but quickly snapped back and continued the conversation.

"Well it's not like I'd get very far without working. And it's good experience and it'll look good on an application for higher education so..." She trailed off, forgetting what point she was meant to be making there. "Okay. That sounds nice."

"Glad to help, Maeko-chan." Kanaye responded as he followed behind her, looking around for a place to sit. He decided on a seat near the corner. "Is this good?" he asked, gesturing in it's general direction.

He sighed. "That's a darn shame, but accidents do happen. Oh well. You did get some cash for it, right? Overtime or something?" Kanaye was kind of out of his depth here. "Higher education? Yeah, that is good. What do you plan to be when you get older?"

"It's great!" Maeko said, nodding. She seated herself quietly and reached for Kanaye's hand once he had done likewise.

"Yeah. Stuff like that happens. I didn't bring it up to the boss, they're still new and I didn't want them to get into too much trouble about something that wasn't their fault. It was only half an hour extra work anyway." She shrugged then laughed nervously. "Oh yeah, I'm supposed to have that all worked out by now, right?"

Kanaye briefly wondered, as he took Maeko's hand, if this was the first reaction to sitting down by every couple. I mean, he never saw it, but he imagined that Maeko knew more about this then he did, so he just brushed it off.

Kanaye smiled and nodded. "That was nice of you, Maeko-chan. I'm sure that whoever it was, they're very thankful for it. You're a wonderful person." Deciding to ignore the brief flashes of witches and birds in his mind, he continued on. "Well, I don't know." Kanaye looked puzzled. "I mean, I'd imagine you have to have a general idea, at least."

Maeko gave this a disporportionate amount of thought before she came up with the answer she gave. "Not maths, I guess. Nothing to do with maths. I used to want to be in the police but considering how poorly the stuff at school's being handled and how easily those jerks who attacked the dorms got released I think it's something I'd be ashamed to be associated with."

Kanaye laughed. "Well, that makes two of us. Math is a horrible, horrible thing. I mean, really, do we need to know half of this stuff? I mean, all we need to know is already taught to us before high school. Do we really need more?"

At the mention of the police, Kanaye actually looked angry for about a second. But in a flash, he was back to smiling. "Seriously. I mean, you would make an excellent policewoman, and you'd look excellent in your uniform, but...Well, if there's anyone that could change it from within, Maeko-chan, it's you."

Maeko was concused by the sudden anger. But it was gone as quickly as it had appeared and pushed out of her mind just as fast. She shook her head.

"Nah. I stopped thinking about it a long time ago. I only wanted to do it because I had it in my head that it meant being the good guy and protecting the weak and all that. It's no fun since it doesn't really work that way."

Kanaye laughed again. "That's a noble goal, Maeko-chan. Really, that is an amazing goal. If more people were like you, I'm sure the world would be a better place. But with the corruption evident in the police system of today, and the power of the yakuza, going legit is not gonna work."

After smirking at the people who turned to him at the word "yakuza", Kanaye asked "So, how's life? How is Misaki hanging up? I'm sorry to ask about her so much, but...I apologize once again, Maeko-chan, for that argument we had. There was no excuse." He bowed his head.

Maeko considered attempting to steer the conversation oh-so-smoothly away from Miski by asking Kanaye about his plans for the future before realizing the inherent flaw in this plan.

So despite being too tired to really keep up a good lie she tried her best, putting more energy into her speech than she usually did. "I-it's fine! That kind of thing happens all the time, right? It can't be helped if people don't get along. We talked later and made up, anyway."

Kanaye was almost going to believe her.

Almost.

"I wouldn't really say all the time. I mean, I...don't think it happens all the time. And..."

Kanaye paused for breath. DRAMATIC MOMENT. "I...think you two would make up from everything. I mean, you guys have a strong friendship, that is for sure. That is a very good thing. But the fact of the matter is, I...don't really think you two tell the truth to each other. I mean...well..."

"All the time in general. It seems normal enough..."

Maeko trailed off. What was with this obsession with truth everyone seemed to have? She'd tried truth and it had got Misaki spirited off to paradise. It was very clearly a bad idea.

"We do! I mean..." Okay, so maybe the most obvious example was a very bad idea. "...she's told me about her family and all that."

Kanaye sighed. He could tell this wasn't going to end well. It didn't begin well, and, in the middle where he was, it wasn't well. Oh well. I didn't actually mean that.
"No offense, Maeko-chan." he said gently, "But Misaki seems like the kind of person to tell her life story to everyone."

Maeko shook her head, refusing to give up this point. Mostly because giving up this point meant accepting that was the only thing Misaki had trusted her with until a few days ago. Misaki hadn't even trusted her enough to tell her what here favourite game was. And had trusted Keiichi that much after knowing him for less months than they's known each other years. Still incredibly upset about this? You bet.

"She wasn't before." She said, shaking her head.

Kanaye refused to give up on this point either. Mostly because giving up on this point means he doesn't have an excuse to badmouth Misaki while acting like he was in Maeko's best interests. "Well, I guess that's true. I think that was a bad example. It's just that..."

He sighed again. "Even if both of you did get into a big argument, like, say, about Keiichi for example, both of you would probably just ignore it and make up. That is to be expected. You are both friends. But sometimes, the other person might have a point. You know how idealistic Misaki is. She just won't listen to you, and if she doesn't listen to you, who will she listen to?"

Maeko nodded. "Oh course we'd make up. Even the witch and that...whatever she was couldn't come between us for long. I'm sure we'd be able to get it across if it was something that was valid. And even if not..."

Maeko's voice fell to an irritated mumble. "She'd still listen to Ito-san."

Kanaye shook his head. "I doubt that, Maeko-chan. Can you honestly believe that Misaki can do bad things? I mean, at most, she just seems misguided."

...Oh. Well, that certainly explains nothing. "Well, that's true. Do you think they've gone very far yet?" he asked, trying to make small talk. His choice in subject left a lot to be desired.

"Of course she can. Everyone's capable of bad things. I don't think she would, though."

An awkward subject for small talk indeed! "I...don't really ask her. It's not any of my business."

Kanaye shrugged. "If you think so."

He smiled for a bit, the first in a while. "Well, yeah, but I guess that means she's still a virgin, right? I mean, she seems like the kind of person to tell someone, even if it's not you. I don't know why it wouldn't be you, but eh."

"Um, I guess so." There was something Maeko had been trying not to think about too hard. "I don't know if she'd tell me, that sort of thing seems kind of personal but..."

Kanaye leaned back in his chair. "Well, true enough, but this IS Misaki we're talking about."

Their conversation was interrupted by the waiter arriving. He smiled at the waiter, and looked up at Maeko. "I am not giving up on this, I owe you too much already. Get whatever you want. My treat."

Maeko was about to argue about this again but decided not to, already too exhausted from work to argue.

"Okay. Thank you." She said, clenching her teeth for a few seconds but smiling. "Anpan!" She said, nodding. Because it was her favourite and certainly not at all because it was also the cheapest thing.

Kanaye completely missed the teeth clenching. "Well, it looks like I now know what to get you if I ever try to make a bento." He said happily. "I'll have some anpan as well." Definitely because he liked and and obviously not because he wanted to look like he liked it in front of Maeko. Certainly not.

WEB OF LIES that was ordering food done with, Maeko thought for a second, trying to come up with a conversation topic that wasn't the one they'd been discussing when they left off.

"Aren't you worried? About what could be over there this time, I mean."

Kanaye blinked. He didn't know why Maeko was so worried about paradise. Still, he smiled softly and squeezed her hand. "I'm not worried at all. We've done this several times already. I think we can do it again. I survived yours. I think I can survive Tom's."

Kanaye didn't really think he 'survived' Maeko's dungeon very well, but he wasn't going to tell her that.

"Really?" Well that made sense. She really was the only one that was scared. "It's not that I don't think we'll succeed but knowing that we're going to be going through an environment that's actively trying to kill us and not knowing anything else about it, it's worrying."
