Maeko, proper and mature class rep of 2B, stuck her tongue out at Gendou's back as he walked off. It was her totally effective way of getting the last word in thier arguements. Student council meeting done, she unwrapped the anpan she'd been too busy to eat at lunch and wisely decided to eat it and run at the same time.

Some choking later, she arrived at the playing field with half the anpan (and most of a hurriedly bought 'oh no, I can't breathe! drink!' bottle of bromonade) in hand. She wasn't sure it was entirely normal to cheer when it was just practice and she just waved when she got close enough to tell which of the players was Kanaye.

	"I think they're mostly for people who are too far away to commute..." Maeko said, nonetheless noting that there were a lot of people staying there for other reasons. "But yeah. 	Kanaye just squeezed her hand until the food came. He smiled at the waiter, who smiled back nervously and put the food down. They really didn't look much different from any other kind of bread he had. He looked at Maeko. "Maeko-chan, do you, like, cut into it? Or is it just finger food?" Kanaye asked, confused. Maeko smiled and nodded. "I'm glad you've found something you like. I think Misa-chan's looking forward to it as well! Though she won't be able to participate until after the break." She paused for a second, thinking. "I'm....I'm not sure there'll be enough time. I need to keep up with all the subjects and paradise and everything...But I'll join if there is!"

She wasn't sure she even intended to try. But she'd been asked to and so she probably should.

Kanaye chuckled. "Thanks, Maeko-chan. I'd feel sorry for Misaki, but I believe she deserves it." He blinked, but nodded and smiled all the same. "All right, Maeko-chan. I don't want your grades to slip over me, after all, but if you do find the time, I do want you to join. It'll be fun, with you and me and Misaki..." Kanaye trailed off. "How is she doing with her parents, anyway? Her dungeon really couldn't have helped with that situation at all, right?"

Maeko remained silent on that topic. Digging in the school had been an incredibly stupid idea and the punishment probably well-deserved but she still felt the need to stick up for her friend.

"I'll try my best to find time, then!" Maeko said, nodding. "I'm not sure if they've spoken since. When we moved Misa-chan's stuff back we moved it from her brother's place..."

	Maeko thought for a second. The idea of yelling at parents was, again, something completely alien to her but she nodded anyway. "She might have called home or something. I didn't ask." Kanaye nodded. "True. It's not like she has to tell you "By the way, I called my parents today. It was horrible." after all. You are best friends, but if she doesn't want to talk about it, she doesn't need to talk about it."

Kanaye took another bite of his anpan and decided to be a hypocrite. "Speaking of which, how's your relationship with your parents? They were at parents night, but my parents didn't speak to them much."

"It's good enough and they're happy as long as I keep my grades up. It's difficult to call them, naturally, but I send emails to let them know how I'm doing and I went to see them the night of Tanabata so my mother could help with the yukata." Maeko nodded to herself as she spoke. After a few seconds thought she decided that it would probably be okay to ask now. "Um, and you?"

Kanaye smiled and nodded. "That's good. I'm sure they love you very much. And how did that go? Were they surprised when you came over for help?"

Kanaye laughed. "Nothing much, really. I haven't seen much of my mother. Well, I have, but let's just say it's in a way I really didn't want to see her." He shuddered, but continued. "My dad's not around much either. He's too busy with his business. He's pressuring me pretty badly to take over Satou Motors. They were never around when I was a kid, so..." Kanaye shrugged.

"I don't think they were that surprised that I needed help with it. I've never really been able to tie a sash."

The potential meanings of that statement went way over Maeko's head. The smile left her face, though, not having parents around sounded kind of lonely. For all the complaints she could have about her father he and her mother both worked from home and very rarely left the house, until she'd moved out she'd never had to be alone if she didn't want to be.

"Oh. Sorry..." She said uselessly, trying and failing to come up with something better to say.

Kanaye shrugged. "Well, no one's perfect. But you're as close as a human could get, Maeko-chan." he said, grinning.

Kanaye shook his head. "Nah, I'm fine. I had the servants to talk to, and I had lots of games to play. I was never lonely at all. Why would I be? I had school, and lots of friends at school, and the internet. I was NEVER lonely." Kanaye sounded like he was trying to convince himself more then Maeko. "Why would I be lonely?" he asked, laughing pitifully.

Maeko wasn't fooled, no matter how hard she was trying to never challenge or correct anything Kanaye said, ever. Struggling to work out how to react to this (and frustrated by the fact that problems that she could do so little to help with DARED to exist), she eventually decided to react the same way she would react if it was Misaki.

Except the table was in the way.

The attempted hug ended up being more leaning over the table to touch Kanaye's shoulders and trying very hard not to fall down or put all her weight on Kanaye.

Kanaye was shook out of his depression by Maeko's hands. He spent about five seconds wondering if it had really happened, and then five more wondering why she wasn't doing a full hug. It took him a while to add two plus two. Once he had fully realized the problem, he stood up, walked around the table, and hugging Maeko tightly. "Thank you, Maeko-chan." he said as softly as he could muster.

	Maeko hadn't thought to just walk around the table. In hindsight it really should have been obvious. "I'm sorry." She mumbled, returning the hug despite the fact that she was becoming increasingly aware this was a public place. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It was kind of weird. And she could practically feel people staring.

But being relied upon was a lot more familiar to Maeko. There was a lot more control in it and compared to everything else it was comforting. She stayed still, holding Kanaye as instructed.

"You should have just asked sooner, idiot. It's not like I'd have said no." She said, sounding mildly annoyed and squeezing Kanaye harder for a second.

	Kanaye smiled and tried to bow. As it turns out, it's hard to bow when you're in an embrace with someone. Still, he managed to cock his head a bit. "Thanks, Maeko-chan.
