Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: idk. Talking, I guess.
Where: Nanakamado
When: Just as clubs are finishing.
Why: wanted threads.

Maeko, proper and mature class rep of 2B, stuck her tongue out at Gendou's back as he walked off. It was her totally effective way of getting the last word in thier arguements. Student council meeting done, she unwrapped the anpan she'd been too busy to eat at lunch and wisely decided to eat it and run at the same time.

Some choking later, she arrived at the playing field with half the anpan (and most of a hurriedly bought 'oh no, I can't breathe! drink!' bottle of bromonade) in hand. She wasn't sure it was entirely normal to cheer when it was just practice and she just waved when she got close enough to tell which of the players was Kanaye.

Kanaye smiled and laughed. "A tea party? I could totally see that. That's almost adorable, really. Actually, it IS adorable, especially if your doll is involved. It was so cute!" he said happily.

Kanaye nodded. "Yeah. She's a nice girl, but she doesn't think of the consequences of her actions. If she wants to hurt herself, that's fine by me, but you don't need to lie to people and get them in trouble as well. Look at me, for example. The only person I'm ruining is me." he said proudly.

"I guess it was kind of cute...though they spilled tea on Kou's doll. I hope it didn't burn him..." She trailed off, tugging on her fringe.

"...That's not true at all."

Kanaye nodded. "That would be a problem, yes. I mean, it could happen to a worse person, but still. No one deserves stuff like that. Except for maybe Reizo. And possibly Kiriko. But no one else!"

Kanaye nodded. "Yes it is! I mean, who else am I ruining?" he asked worriedly.

"Just because you're the only one who's hurt directly as a result of your actions doesn't mean other people aren't affected by the fact that you're ruining yourself."

It took a couple of seconds for Kanaye to realize what she was implying. "...My drinking is hurting you?" he asked, still rather confused. She didn't act any different, but...

"It's not the drinking." Maeko shook her head. She didn't know enough about the drinking to be bothered by it. "It's over there. And even over here. Even if the witch can just sew you back together and even if there's some weird butterfly who won't let us die, it's not like it's not a big deal if you get hurt. Even if you don't have that much respect for your own life, there's people who care."

Kanaye blinked. "...Oh." was all he managed to vocalize. He thought about this for a few moments, then shrugged. "I don't see what the big deal is. Yeah, it hurts, but I can just come back. Death really isn't all that scary, Maeko-chan. And it's better if I get killed then you. I mean, that witch can heal things. Indra? All he does is laugh at things and stab people. Lots of people laugh at me, and Masami can stab people better then I can. I'm not trying to die or get hurt, but it's not a big deal if I do."

Maeko was almost certain that Kanaye wasn't nearly practical enough for this to be solely about capabilities. She could have accepted that answe from Kou, maybe, or Kiriko or Renju or Tom or maybe even from herself but not from Kanaye.

"So then if I didn't have the witch but it was still reversable then you wouldn't care if I died over there?"

Kanaye shook his head vigorously. "No! Of course not, Maeko-chan. You're far more important then that, even without that witch. I mean, Misaki-san likes you, and pretty much everyone else respects you. And I'm your boyfriend, so of course I could care. I have you, which is awesome, and Toru-kun, which is also awesome, but no one else would really care if I died. They'd be, like, 'oh no he's dead just revive him.' People would be a lot more responsive to your death."

Maeko tried to speak, was interrupted by a hiccup, and stopped. She tugged on her fringe for a while, hiccupping quietly every few seconds, until she finally managed to speak again.

"I'd care..."

Kanaye blinked. Then he blinked again. Then he finally got what she was talking about.

Kanaye slapped himself. "Stupid, stupid, stupid..." he said under his breath to himself before looking at Maeko. "I'm sorry, Maeko-chan! I didn't mean it like that! I-I mean..." He let out a string of unintelligible sentences. Kanaye paused for breath. "I-I'm sorry about this. I'm horrible with other people's feelings. I'm...just bad with people. Please, forgive me!" he nearly yelled. "I'll try to keep myself alive in there, I promise." He remarked, leaning his head down. "But...Maeko-chan? I still want you to know, if it's between you or me dying, I'll take the bullet myself. It's kind of selfish, but...I don't want to see you hurt."

Between Kanaye's outbust and Maeko's uncontrollable hiccups the two of them probably seemed quite strange. Maeko didn't really care for now. Her father's life as a shut-in meant that it was uplikely that news of anyone seeing her being such a disgrace would reach him anyway.

She decided she wanted to answer a long time before she got her voice back and so reached out for Kanaye's hand instead of speaking.

Kanaye kept quiet and gave her his hand. Both of them, actually. He surrounded her hand with his own hands and squeezed softly.

After a while, the silence stopped feeling so oppressive and became more calm. Maeko still hadn't calmed nearly enough to use her voice again (that much honesty in such a short about of time? Not something she was at all used to doing) but had calmed down enough to want to and to think and to not be hiccupping every few seconds.

After a little more thought she pulled her hand back. She paused, looking at the scars on the backs of her hands, and then started moving them, almost reluctantly at first, to sign out the only phrase she knew for certain Kanaye knew in sign.

Kanaye felt the scars. He was still worried. Shouldn't they have healed by now? Then again, he didn't know anything about medicine or such. He might have Kou look at it or something.

Kanaye blinked as he noticed what Maeko was doing. He knew she was signing something, but...what? And then he saw it. He saw the one phrase he remembered by heart. He smiled slowly and repeated it, much more awkwardly and slowly then Maeko did.

Maeko nodded and smiled. After a few seconds, she finally managed to force herself to speak.

"Sorry..." She said quietly. Which wasn't quite what she was meaning to say (what she was meaning to say was closer to 'thank you') but was, she decided, close enough.

Kanaye shook his head. "No, no, no Maeko-chan. I'm the one that should be saying sorry. I mess everything up. So..." he trailed off, bowing his head. "sorry."

Maeko slowly finished the last of the anpan as she waited for her voice to return, distracted and not really giving it the attention such a delicious bread deserved.

"Thank you." She said, eventually. "Even if it's easily reversable, I still don't want you to be hurt."

Kanaye nodded softly. "I don't want to see you hurt either, Maeko-chan. Let's just look out for ourselves and each other in there, then." he said happily. "And...thank you, Maeko-chan, for caring about me. It...really means a lot." Kanaye started tearing up.

"That should work well enough..." Maeko said, smiling again. This had been a really weird discussion.

"Are you okay...?"

"I'm fine." Kanaye nodded, eyes still wet. He wiped them off. "Really, I'm fine."

The waiter, deciding that now was an excellent time to make them pay before they got into another fight and/or started showing too much emotion again, walked over, handing them the bill. He'd heard their little argument, so it was split.

"...if you're sure." Maeko said, deciding to concentrate on paying her half with exact change instead.

Once she'd counted it out carefully she looked back up at Kanaye. "Do you want to head back to the dorms after this?"

Kanaye just took out a couple of bills and put them into the waiter's hand. "Keep the change." he said before turning to Maeko. "That would be lovely, Maeko-chan." Kanaye smiled.

"Okay then," She said once they'd paid. She stood up and offered a hand out to Kanaye.

Kanaye accepted the hand, standing up. He walked over to the door, opened it, and bowed again. "After you, my mademoiselle Maeko-chan!" His pronunciation was no better then the last time he said it.
