WHO: Keiichi & Shiori
WHAT: Excursion to Noodle Alley
WHERE: Meeting outside school, then (duh) Noodle Alley
WHEN: Thursday, after school.
WHY: Funs?

Sitting on one of the benches lining the walkway leading up to the school's front door was Keiichi, swinging his legs absent-mindedly. He was, honestly, quite bored.

And when bored, Keiichi enjoyed sampling the flavors of Noodle Alley. One minor problem: he had no one to go with. Keiichi could, of course, just go and pull up a seat at the counter, but where was the fun in that?

No, he needed company. The fairer gender would be preferred, but really, anyone would do. At least that way there would be conversation.

After a long day of listening to teacher's drone on, detention had seemed like a welcomed vacation by the time the day was done. She had walked into the room, intent on drawing a picture in a new style she had been dying to experiment with, when she saw it was her least favorite teacher acting as the supervisor. Frowning, Shiori already knew to put her sketchbook back in her bag and take out homework: this teacher was one that wasn't fooled by Shiori's facade of a diligent student listening intently to her teacher. No, this teacher was too smart for that and had a tendency of handing out detentions.

For once, Shiori had not enjoyed detention.

So by the time she got out, full of energy and a desire to make all of the, ahem, traumatizing memories disappear, Shiori was willing to do anything. Jog around town. Take a bus into the next town. Anything, so long as she didn't have to look at another book! Raising her arms into a lazy stretch, she paused when she spotted Ito-san from her class. What was he doing here, she wondered. Was there a cooking class today, maybe..?

Dropping her arms, she decided to approach him.

"Hello, Ito-san!" Shiori said with a small wave. "Why are you here so late?"

Her voice snapped him from his somewhat lethargic state, and he glanced up. Wakanata-san. Interesting. Considering all the time he'd spent around Misaki lately due to the Cooking Club open house, he hadn't really been able to see many of his other classmates and fellow Persona users. Probably not a good thing, he realized, especially if they were going to keep going back into that...place.

"Heya, Watanaka-san," Keiichi replied, waving back in her direction. "I'm honestly quite bored. Was thinking of heading down to Noodle Alley and grabbing a bite to eat. Everyone has club today though, so they don't leave right after school."

He paused a moment, and shrugged. "Guess I didn't want to go by myself. You interested?"

It didn't hurt that he remembered Shiori's penchant last year for skirts that, ah, were slightly shorter than the school would have liked.

Her hand clasped on her bag's shoulder strap, Shiori angled her head slightly, hair brushing down her shoulder lightly. If he was bored, why didn't he just head home? Wouldn't that have been better than sitting alone in the school?

"That's weird," was all she said, giggling quietly. To think he had been sitting and contemplating going to get noodles, when he could have actually headed to Noodle Alley, was amusing to her. Though Shiori often did it herself as well, so she supposed she probably shouldn't be laughing.

When he asked if he wanted to join her, Shiori froze for a moment. Was he really asking her? Wouldn't he more likely go with Aoi-san or one of their other classmates? He must be really bored, if he was inviting her along.

Immediately, she felt ashamed of herself for being so harsh on herself and instead nodded, smiling brightly.

"I'd love to!" she exclaimed. "Oh, but would you mind if we met there or something? I need to get money." Furrowing her brow slightly, she added, "And change too, I think. I don't want to wear the uniform anymore than I have to."

It had been rather warm lately, and she knew the stores in Noodle Alley would do nothing to relieve that. It was best she changed and grabbed money (usually, Shiori went places that didn't require her to carry around money) before going out to eat.

Wow, she'd actually said yes. An unexpected development. In spite of them being in the same year, he'd always sort of seen her as...distracted was probably the best way he could put it.

"Great," he agreed, with a shrug. "How long do you need?"

Meeting her there wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It would also let him change out of the uniform. He didn't mind it that much, but it was kind of heavy. Particularly on a noodle run.

Besides, he wouldn't be bored now, and that was what was important.

"Not long," Shiori replied. "I live pretty close to Noodle Alley, so I don't have very far to walk."

She hesitated, wondering if she should just invite him to come with her. That would be weird though, wouldn't it? She felt she was already pressing her luck by just going to Noodle Alley with him - she would be crossing an unsaid boundary if she were to invite him over. Oh, this was weeeeeird.

"Where should we meet?" she mused aloud. "I live closest to Ken Doi's restaurant. We could meet up there, maybe? Where would you be coming from?"

She didn't want to inconvenience him by making him walk out of his way, especially since Shiori barely had any distance at all to walk. It would be rude to make him walk all that way just because she was lazy.

"I'm in the dorms," Keiichi replied. "We live about a half hour away, but Mom wanted me to have the "full school experience." I think she just wanted to keep me away from Dad's weird friends, though."

She seemed a little...off-balanced? And he was just inviting her for noodles. Maybe his reputation had spread a bit further than he'd figured? Or maybe it was just the way he'd put the invitation. Keiichi didn't know.

"Doi's place is good," he agreed. "I can run back to the dorms and change and meet you there whenever you're ready."

Keiichi smiled, wryly. Nothing was ever easy around this school. Nothing at all. Walking with her would have been ideal for more reasons than the usual; particularly to discuss the entire "Persona" situation.

But, reputation or not, he was a gentleman. Sadly, he didn't think most people understood that part.

"I'm not gunna ask," Shiori said with a laugh. Stepping back, she gave another quick wave. "I'll head out now then!"

She turned, heading towards the doors leading out of the school. Picking up the pace once she was out of the school, she hastened to get to her house. She didn't want to keep Ito-san waiting as much as she really didn't want to screw this up. She hardly ever hung out with people from her class, and she didn't want this time to be the last.

It didn't take her long to get home, and it didn't take her long to change either. Trading her pants for her favorite black skirt that was more a faded grey than actual black and definitely shorter than the school's skirts, her uniform top for a pale yellow shirt with a tree and a giraffe at the bottom of it, and her plain white socks for bare feet and sandals, Shiori finally deemed herself presentable. After grabbing a small bag for her money and sketchbook, Shiori left her house and hoped she wasn't running late.

It hadn't taken Keiichi long to return to his dorm room. He figured that if he moved fast enough, he could beat her to the restaurant. Being on time and first was important to him. Always had been, probably always would be.

Rummaging through his closet and drawers, Keiichi pieced together an outfit: red and silver "Tungsten Chef" shirt, jean shorts, socks, and sneakers. Casual, but his usual attire for noodle runs.

He didn't know Shiori well, by most measures. Better to be casual. If he walked in dressed up, he might throw her off again, and the invitation had already done that seemingly. She was a quiet girl. Mostly kept to herself.

At least that meant that if he liked her in the end he'd have less competition. Keiichi was pretty sure that Misaki had half the school after her at this point, one of those difficult developments.

Keiichi ran a brush through his hair quickly, and surveyed himself in the mirror. Better. Inwardly, he chuckled at all of the thought he was putting into being casual. Didn't quite make sense.

He was thinking about this too much. "C'mon, Keiichi, get it together," he murmured. She was just a girl. One he didn't know well. Things would be fine.

The walk to the restaurant didn't take long, though his mind was full of many things. "Girls" wasn't a new development, but "Persona" most certainly was. He still didn't understand what the Hell was going on.

Taking a seat on a bench just outside the restaurant, he waited for his classmate, a small smile on his face.

Personas or not, life went on.

Bag thumping against her hip as she ran and her hair whipping around as the wind blew through it, Shiori began to hope not that she wasn't late, but that she didn't look like a total mess by the time she got there. Just to be safe, she slowed down once she saw the street and combed through her hair with her fingers in an attempt to straighten it. It was as she was fixing her bangs that she spotted Ito-san sitting at a bench, and all thoughts of fixing herself up went out the window as she jogged over to him once again.

"Sorry, sorry!" she exclaimed. "I didn't make you wait too long, did I?"

It seemed one of her worries had come true. Hopefully the other one - that she looked somewhat presentable after running the short distance - didn't.

Running another hand through her hair just to be safe, she tugged the hem of her t-shirt down and looked at Ito-san. She was glad she didn't dress up for this; it seemed he had the same idea she had with going casual.

Keiichi looked up just in time to spot his classmate running towards him. Wind blowing through her hair, check. Shorter skirt than normal, check.

He was beginning to think this was quite a good idea, actually.

"Not at all, I've only been here a couple of minutes," he replied, smiling at her, and rising to his feet. He was quite confused as to why the girl didn't seem to interact with people much. Thus far, she'd seemed quite personable.

"Shall we," Keiichi asked, gesturing towards the restaurant. Good noodles and good company; this day was looking up.

"Yessir!" she said cheerfully, leading the way into the restaurant. Pausing to hold the door for him, she continued along into the restaurant and bounced on the balls of her feet.

"I haven't ate here in forever!" she exclaimed. "I hope they still serve miso with the spicy bean paste!"

She trailed off, looking at the menu hanging over the kitchen area. She grinned when she saw it did still serve her preferred ramen, and she turned back to Ito-san.

"Do you know what you're going to get, Ito-san?" she asked. At a loud bark of laughter coming from a corner booth, she also began to laugh. "Oh, we should probably find a place to sit too, huh? We probably look really weird just standing here!"

This wasn't as bad as she thought it was going to be. Quite the opposite, actually. Ito-san was really nice, and Ken Doi's seemed like the perfect place to go for them. It was loud enough that they could talk about the personas without being overheard, and it got rid of any awkwardness that might have made the situation tense otherwise.

Energetic, she was. Most of the girls in the school seemed to be. It did come as a bit of a surprise to him, since she seemed to be always lost in her own little world.

Her decisiveness made him smile. Deciding what to eat at a noodle place was usually a choice that took him ages upon ages. Today wasn't about the noodles, though.

"The beef sukiyaki ramen, I think," Keiichi replied. "Still trying to figure out what spices they use in it so I can replicate it at home..."

Tonight he'd be cooking for just him and Mom; Dad was off competing somewhere in Hokkaido.

He nodded. "Booth's probably best," Ito-san said, gesturing to one tucked in a far corner of the loud restaurant. Away from everyone else.

Looking at her intently, his voice dropped a bit. "Everything okay? A few days ago was...kind of a shock."

Wannabe ladies man or not, he was concerned about the others. All of them.

Eyes widening, Shiori put a hand to her stomach.

"Oh, beef sukiyaki sounds really good too..." Shiori groaned. Dropping the dramatics, she blinked at her classmate. "It's probably something really weird, like... I dunno, coconut flakes or something. Have you tried making it before?"

It was almost strange to imagine that Ito-san cooked outside of school, though of course he must have to. He couldn't possibly make enough food at the cooking club to have lunch every day. She supposed that she must just imagine that as soon as she got back home, everyone else ceased to exist - she usually didn't think of her classmates outside of class. With the personas, though, she supposed she must have to start.

"Booth it is!" Shiori exclaimed when Ito-san said it would be best, making her way to it after checking that Ito-san was still behind her. Sliding onto the seat and smoothing her skirt down, she put her bag in between herself and the wall. Shiori watched as Ito-san sat down, and blinked in surprise at the serious look he gave her.

And then he asked her if she was okay, and she let out a nervous giggle.

"Aoi-san asked me the same thing," Shiori said. "My hand's been hurting because I drew so much when I got home, but other than that I'm fine. Did... did someone get hurt there?" And then, hesitantly. "Are you okay?"

"A couple of times," he admitted. "It's usually good, but doesn't taste quite the same. I usually end up cooking in the dorms or at home to practice."

Keiichi grinned at her from across the table. "Maybe I should cook for you sometime..."

Matching meals to people was always a fun task. He liked to think that his bentos were matched pretty well to his personality: vibrant and lively.

"You like to draw a lot, don't you," he asked. From what he remembered, most of the teachers tended to keep her in detention due to her propensity for drawing in class.

He made a mental note to soften his expression. Being serious wasn't something people expected from him, after all. "I'm fine, Wakanata-san. Confused, and wondering what's going to happen next, but physically fine. I appreciate the concern, though. You're the first person to really ask..."

Even as the waiter approached, he still found himself looking at her. Pretty, he decided. Definitely pretty. A bit spacey, maybe, but Hell. So was he.

"That'd be amazing, Ito-san!" Shiori exclaimed, leaning forward slightly before blushing. "When you let me have some of your lunch, it's always really good so... um, I sometimes lie about not having one just so I can have some of your food."

She laughed nervously, adding a quick, "I'm sorry for lying to you and stealing your lunch. But your food is so good!"

Her smile turned into a frown when he said no one had asked how he was. It seemed weird to her that Ito-san, who had so many more friends than her, wouldn't have been asked how he was doing. But Shiori, who didn't really have any friends, would be asked by two different people. It was sad...

"I think we're all confused. Like, what were those things? And why a bunch of high schoolers instead of, I dunno, an adult?" she mused. Ignoring the waiter, who had come to their table, for a moment, she added, "If things do change - like, if you aren't fine anymore, you can tell me. I'll do my best to help you out, Ito-san!"

Still blushing, she turned and beamed at the waiter. "I'll have miso with spicy bean paste, please!"

Keiichi chuckled a bit. "Please...call me Keiichi. I hate formalities." He really did. Being called san and senpai always made him feel...old.

"And you should have asked earlier. I would have made more for you. I like cooking for people." Cute girls in particular, but still. "Thank you, though. I like when people enjoy my cooking."

He watched the waiter approach, hoping she would cut off her line of questioning before he got there. They could talk about the creatures once people weren't so close.

"Beef sukiyaki ramen for me," Keiichi said. Once the waiter left, he leaned across the table, and patted her hand. "Thank you, Shiori," Keiichi murmured, forgetting to be formal. "That means a lot to me."

"Alright," Shiori agreed easily, pleased with the whole thing. If he really didn't like her, he wouldn't have asked her to call him by his first name. But he had, so Shiori must have done something right.

Jeez, she must look so crazy though - she could hardly keep the grin off her face!

"Maybe next time we could do that!" Shiori said excitedly. "Just cook at the school or something, I mean. That would be really fun, I bet."

As Keiichi placed his order and the waiter walked away, Shiori blushed once again when he placed his hand on hers. This was the first time someone had touched her hand on purpose since she was a very young girl. It was weird, and yet... it felt nice.

She hoped she could use the heat as an excuse for why her face was so red.

"I'm glad," she nodded, adding hesitantly. "Er, you can call me Shiori too without worrying about the formalities and that. It'd only be right, since you're letting me call you Keiichi."

"You can come to the Cooking Club meetings," Keiichi said, practically beaming. "I'm sure Aoi-san would be happy, too."

At this point, anything resembling competence would make them happy, let alone someone who'd actually probably be able to cook with proper practice.

She was blushing, seemingly. He grinned; she couldn't blame it on her spicy ramen since it wasn't here yet. Not like he'd call her on it, though.

"Shiori it is," Keiichi replied, agreeably. "It's much better like this. Especially since we'll probably be working together a lot more now, with the whole expedition and everything."

And ideally Cooking Club, but he wasn't going to force that issue.

The cooking class would be fun, but Keiichi would probably be too busy helping out other people. Aoi-san had said he was a really good cook and teacher - she had been practically pushing Shiori to get lessons from him instead of letting Shiori take the easy way out and have Aoi-san help her. Maybe she would go though. But not because she wanted to spend more time with Keiichi or anything, even if he was nicer and cooler than she had originally though. She was just going to spend time with Aoi-san.

Right.

"Yeah," Shiori agreed. "I wonder if someone's going to organize a big get-together so we can all become friends or something. Probably Aoi-san, huh? She seems like she'd be the type to do that." She smiled fondly; though she hadn't known the first year for very long, she liked the younger girl already.

"We could beat everyone to the punch though!" Shiori said excitedly, brightening. Linking her fingers together, she placed her elbows on the table and her head on her hands. "So, tell me about yourself Keiichi~"

"She might," Keiichi admitted. "She's really nice and bubbly and everything. She's also one of the only people in the club who actually wants to cook."

Ito-san offered a shrug. The idea hadn't actually crossed his mind. "We're just...a very different group, best I can tell. Different classes and personalities and everything.

He was caught slightly off guard when she asked him to talk about himself. Keiichi wasn't used to it.

"Um...we live an hour or so away, I think I said that already," he managed. "Dad's a pro wrestler, so he's away from home a lot, so it's me and mom when I'm home for a Sunday or holidays."

She seemed interested, though, she he continued to rack his brain for things to tell her. "I like writing, too. Not just cooking. Poems and things." Keiichi felt a little embarrassed, but she did ask, after all. "What about you?"

"Whoa, a pro-wrestler? That's so cool! What's his name?" she asked. "My little brother is a huge fan; he'd go nuts if I told him I knew someone related to one of his heroes! Though it must be hard for your mom too, having you live so far away and your dad travel so much..."

She trailed off, wondering if she had broached the line of subjects not to bring up on a firs- casual meeting between classmates. Mentally berating herself, Shiori desperately scrambled for something else to talk about. Keiichi seemed to seen her dilemma - or was planning on talking more anyway - for he continued on.

"You write poetry? You don't seem like the type to, but that's really impressive still! I'm only good at drawing," Shiori admitted. "My goal is to become really famous because of my art. Once I'm done with high school, I'm going to move to Tokyo and make it big!" She grinned cockily, tone revealing her self-confidence.

"Um... as for my family, I have an older brother, a younger brother, and a little sister." Biting her lower lip, she gazed down at a table. That was really all there was about her; she wasn't unremarkable or anything. No more than any other person, really. Perking up slightly, she added, "Oh! I'm a native of Iburi, too. You've probably had a lot of time to explore the town, but if you want to go exploring one day or something I'll be your guide! I know all the great scenic places!"

"Ito Kenjiro," Keiichi replied. "The Hokkaido Bear." It always felt slightly silly when he considered that man to be his father, but father he was. "Mom deals with it pretty well, all things considered. Dad tries to be home as much as he can."

"I'm not a good poet, or anything. From what I've seen, you're a far better drawer than I am a poet." Most of his poetry wasn't anything he wanted people to see, really. "I just do it to release some creative energy. I can't really draw or paint, and I can only be so artistic through cooking."

He nodded along as she spoke of her dream. "Better plan for when we're done here than mine," he admitted. "Don't know much past wanting to cook. Don't know where or how, though."

It made him feel pathetic, sometimes. So many people seemed to have their futures all planned out already.

Her offer, though, snapped him from his down thoughts. "That would be really nice, actually. I don't get to go out as much as I'd like..."

"You are your hardest critic. I'm sure you're great at it," Shiori beamed. "And cooking can take you a lot of places too. Maybe you could start your own restaurant? I bet it would be insanely popular if you did make it! But then, I think you'd be successful wherever you go, Keiichi. You just gotta- ooh, I think that's our food!"

She straightened, trying to peer into the bowls even as the waiter approached their table just to be sure it was their food. Letting out an excited, "Oh, it is, it is!" she looked away from the food to Keiichi.

"I'm really excited!" she said, even as the waiter placed the bowls of miso and sukiyaki in front of her and Keiichi respectively. Snapping the chopsticks apart, she exclaimed a quick "Idatakimasu!" before stirring the spicy bean paste into the broth and noodles. Maneuvering her chopsticks to pick up the noodles, she tucked her hair behind her ear before bring the bowl closer so she could scoop some of the noodles into her mouth without making a mess out of everything. Chewing momentarily before swallowing, she looked up at Keiichi.

"It's good!" she reported with a broad smile. "How's yours?"

He was grateful the food arrived. The future always scared Keiichi, and besides, he had time to worry about it.

Keiichi was less quick to eat his ramen, stirring it with his chopsticks slowly, and regarding the long spoon served alongside the bowl carefully.

"Easy there," he teased. "The ramen'll still be there if you pause to take a breath. It's not good to eat spicy things so fast..."

Lowering his chopsticks, he grabbed a small portion of noodles, and placed them into his mouth. A thoughtful look came over his face as he chewed, tilting his head to the side.

"Very good. The noodles are just chewy enough. Maybe today I'll figure out what they use in the broth."

Her enthusiasm made him smile. Really, Shiori was turning out to be quite different than he'd imagined.

Taking another portion of noodles into her mouth, she began to eat the noodles and using her chopsticks to bring more to her mouth in earnest. Shiori felt like she hadn't ate all day - she wasn't even realizing how quickly she was eating until Keiichi brought it up. Pausing with noodles still dangling from her mouth and chopsticks, she quickly ate the rest her chopsticks held before chewing and swallowing.

"I'll be fine!" Shiori assured him. "I eat spicy food all the ti-"

A loud hiccup interrupted her, and with a blush she dropped the chopsticks into her bowl and brought her hand to her mouth. Maybe it had been awhile since she ate something this spicy, or her eating too fast was the cause of it. Or a combination of both, of course. Hiccuping quietly again, shoulders jolting slightly, she reached for a glass of water and took a sip from it. Waiting a moment, she took another before putting the glass back down and picking her chopsticks back up.

"Eheh.." she laughed nervously, stirring her noodles again. "If you do figure it out, you should make it at the next cooking club. I'll chip in with the ingredients!"

Keiichi couldn't help but chuckle. "Easy, easy." He called over to the waiter for more water, and smiled at his classmate. "That's why I try to avoid spicy ramen."

He ate his own meal more slowly, using the spoon to ladle some broth into his mouth. Still not quite there on everything in it. He'd have to do some experimentation. "Food is an art," he continued. "You don't rush through a museum of art when you go visit, nor should you wolf down your food in one gulp."

Sure, he was a bit more extreme about his cooking and cuisine in general than most, but that was to be expected considering that it would, ideally, be his life.

"Our next club meeting is actually scheduled for brownies, if I remember correctly," Keiichi recalled. "And don't worry about chipping in. The school funds our ingredients. Good thing, too, considering how poorly things usually go with some of the students..."

"Thanks," Shiori said, relieved that she wouldn't have to conserve the water. As much as she ate spicy foods, even she couldn't eat a bowl of spicy miso without some water. She paused from her stirring when he spoke again.

"Spicy food to me is like chocolate is for other people - you want to savor it, but you can't help but eat it as quickly as you can," Shiori said, smiling. "Still, though, I could see where you're coming from. I'd be so mad if someone cruised through my gallery without really looking at the pictures!"

Scooping up some more noodles, though not as much as she had been taking before, she began to eat the noodles slower. By doing so, the various spices really became apparent. Though it was still just as good, the flavor seemed to burn as she chewed it and she had to take another drink of water. Definitely glad she had changed out of her uniform, for the heat of the miso only seemed to add the temperature of the room, she brushed her hair away from her face once again.

"Ah, that sounds like it'd be fun! Making brownies, I mean - not having people mess up the recipes," Shiori mused. "Still, though, it must suck to have to make the basics at the club when you could be figuring out the recipe for the sukiyaki or some other complex recipe."

He could sympathize on the chocolate bit. He did enjoy sweets, quite a bit, actually.

The noodles were mostly forgotten as he spoke to her. Ramen was something he could have anytime. Company was not.

The spiciness of her meal made it look like she was blushing, and he chuckled lightly. Kind of cute, really.

"I don't mind, Shiori," Keiichi replied, finally. "I like teaching and helping people cook as much as I like cooking myself."

"You should be a cooking instructor then!" Shiori said, as though this were a brilliant idea that needed to be done. "Man, that'd be fun too, I bet..." Giggling, she added, "Hee, I'm glad I can get help from you now, while you aren't charging."

Finishing the noodles left in the bowl, she jumped slightly when she felt her phone vibrate from inside her bag. Reaching down for it, she flipped open the phone and saw it was a warning that her battery was low. About to tuck it back inside her bag, her eyes widened when she saw what time it is.

"Oh, man!" she exclaimed, shoving her phone back into her bag and sliding out of the booth. "It's so late! I'm sorry, Keiichi, but I really need to go!"

Digging money out of her bag, she slapped it onto the table. Bowing lowly to Keiichi, she quickly straightened.

"I'm sorry!" she said again. "Thank you for inviting me to come along. We should do this again!"

And then, after a moment's hesitation, she grabbed him into a quick hug before stepping away and, with a wave, running down the aisle towards the exit.
