Entry tags:keiichi, kozue, tom

WHO: Keiichi & Kozue (and eventually everyone's favorite interloper)
WHAT: Picnic!
WHERE: The Park
WHEN: Friday?
WHY: Since it's lovey-dovey couple stuff/Tom needs to stalk people OUTSIDE for a change.

Carefully, Keiichi spread out the picnic blanket over a nice patch of grass in the park. It was a nice day out, the perfect sort of day for a picnic with one's girlfriend.

He was still trying to get used to that fact, the whole "I'm dating a pretty girl and it's not in my imagination" sort of thing. Still, there was no better distraction from all the trials and tribulations of his life than Kozue, and he was thrilled that she'd agreed to meet him here for lunch.

Inwardly, he grinned. It was sort of like one of those romance manga. Not that he read them of course, but still.

There. Perfect. Now she just needed to arrive, and he could unpack the food.

Tom tried not to let out a sign, but it slipped past his lips before he could stop it. He reached a hand up to run it through his hair, then looked at them.

"Did you honestly think the plan was to go up to a teacher at this school and... explain Paradise, the killer and all of that? Did you think I was under the impression that we would confront her and she would admit the whole give us a rant about whys he did it, and follow up with "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you lousy kids."

Tom spared a glance toward Max, who cocked his head to the side as he looked at his master.

"... And your dog. That's... I don't even think Satou is that stupid."

He took his hand from his head, and looked between them. He started walking, and the puppy popped up, moving quickly toward Kozue to make sure she, and Keiichi were coming with.

"Look... investigation isn't like in comic books." Yes, Tom said comic books not manga, in unaccented English.

"Or novels, there isn't an A-ha moment, where it all comes together and you confront everyone. It's about little details, you make a list of everyone who might have done it, then you eliminate anyone who couldn't have done it, and then anyone who wouldn't have done it, then you still probably have three or four people who are likely suspects. It's scientific method. Observation, Hypothesis, Experiment, Conclusions.

Observation; the two people who have died in Paradise may have a connection to Ishino, it is the only connection they have that we currently know. Therefore, I make the hypothesis that Ishino *may* be connected to this.
Thus we test this by interviewing her, and either confirming that this is true, or proving that it is not true. In which case we can form a new hypothesis, yes I could be wrong but by finding out we confirm whether or not I'm wrong and we might even learn a great deal more."

Kozue listened, looking back and forth between the two tall boys, trying to decide who she agreed with. At the moment, it felt like she was teetering on the edge of a decision; she might come down on either side, if she could just figure out the advantages of picking one over the other. Whether she was pondering the advantages of choosing one argument, or choosing one arguer? That was less clear. Even to her.

Keiichi's objection made immediate sense; Tom's points sounded really smart. And while Ito-sempai was her boyfriend, and it was true that for many girls her age, that would have been more than enough reason to come down on his side without even listening to what he said? Well, Kozue was keenly aware of the transitory nature of such relationships: boyfriends didn't last forever. And. Sagaki helped with her homework; he might be persuaded to do so again...

So she just glanced back and forth, making a very quiet hmmm, before she caught herself and stopped.

Scientific *what*?

Keiichi's head was spinning, and he considered himself reasonably intelligent.

"Still," he tried, "interviewing a teacher isn't the most natural activity in the known world. How do we do it without her feeling like she's playing 20 Questions?"

Tom thought for a moment, and shrugged.

"We tell her about the pattern. We don't need to tell her about Paradise or anything. We warn her that it looks like she may be targeted. That we should warn the police.

If she tells us there was nothing between her and Sato we can ask the people who knew Sato, or her, confirm her story. Or if she tells us not to go to the police."

Tom let out a breath, and put his hands in his pocket.

"... Or if one of the three of us gets attacked next."

Tom looked between Keiichi and Kozue, then turned away. Max looked at Tom and let out a very quick, soft whine before walking further.

"That's still kind of suspici--and wait a minute." She blinked. If she'd been, well, anyone else, she probably would have actually yelled, but Kozue hardly ever raised her voice. "If one of the three of us gets attacked? Sagaki-sempai, did I hear you right? Are you asking us to intentionally put ourselves in the way of getting kidnapped into Paradise?" She blinked at him again. Was he really? Seriously?
