Entry tags:keiichi, kozue, tom

WHO: Keiichi & Kozue (and eventually everyone's favorite interloper)
WHAT: Picnic!
WHERE: The Park
WHEN: Friday?
WHY: Since it's lovey-dovey couple stuff/Tom needs to stalk people OUTSIDE for a change.

Carefully, Keiichi spread out the picnic blanket over a nice patch of grass in the park. It was a nice day out, the perfect sort of day for a picnic with one's girlfriend.

He was still trying to get used to that fact, the whole "I'm dating a pretty girl and it's not in my imagination" sort of thing. Still, there was no better distraction from all the trials and tribulations of his life than Kozue, and he was thrilled that she'd agreed to meet him here for lunch.

Inwardly, he grinned. It was sort of like one of those romance manga. Not that he read them of course, but still.

There. Perfect. Now she just needed to arrive, and he could unpack the food.

On her way into the park, Kozue had been fielding a constant stream of text message questions: What are you doing today? Wait, you're really dating Ito? Wait, you're really still dating Ito? Did you hear about... What do you think of... And on and on in a constant cycle; she wasn't even really looking where she was going, being so focused on her phone screen. It was lucky that she hadn't slammed into anyone.

So where were they supposed to meet? Somewhere around here, right? She glanced up, after sending off a text to her roommate to the effect of Yes, really, on a date with Ito-sempai, not kidding, and caught sight of Keiichi. Oh! They were supposed to meet there!

She cut across the grass, heading for him, and raising her hand to wave: "Am I late?" she asked, as she got closer. Her phone beeped again and, fighting the impulse to check it, she dropped it into one of the pockets on her uniform blazer.

"Not late at all, Ko-chan," he replied, smiling, and rising from the blanket to embrace her. By high school standards, Keiichi wasn't especially touchy-feely, but a hug here and there he couldn't resist.

Besides, she was all cute and pretty and, like, a foot shorter than him.

Confidence wasn't quite his strong suit, at least, not outside of Paradise it wasn't. There was, though, something to be said for someone thinking highly enough of you to date you.

"It'll be nice to have some time together, just the two of us..."

She hugged back--ending up with her face against Keiichi's chest, because, indeed, he was really super tall and she was kind of short. (She tried convincing herself, as often as she could, that she was not the odd one; her height was really only a little below normal. She just socialized with a lot of giants.) And then, a hug, that was it?

You'd think he'd know, she thought, pulling back, considering whether she ought to show him the proper way to greet someone you were dating. As opposed to, like, your family members. Oddly enough, it was his comment about them having time together, just the two of them, made her decide against it. "Well, just the two of us," she said with a very practiced, very almost-genuine smile, "although it's kind of a public place."

"And, you know, Satou-sempai calls me that all the time. Ko-chan." She pointed this out as if it was not exactly a wonderful thing; indeed, it wasn't. Kanaye needed to learn some boundaries, after all.

He wanted to kiss her. He really did. There was, though, one thing stopping him at the moment.

"Kind of but not really public," he agreed, gesturing behind him to another blanket a few yards behind them where a couple happened to be somewhat discreetly attempting to make out. At least another blanket was hiding them. "Privacy is a relative term, I suppose."

It was almost as if he was worried that he'd turn into that, somehow. Not that it would be a bad thing, but really, making out in public was probably the territory of, well...

"Satou-senpai is..." Keiichi paused, trying to figure out the best way to put this. "A bit of an asshole," was what came out, whether or not he intended it to. "He used to try to treat me like his kohai of romance. I...don't think he quite understands that he drives people away."

Maybe it was the mention of Kanaye calling her by an affectionate name. Maybe it was the fact that, for the love of God, he had a girlfriend. Whatever the case, he pulled her close again, and kissed her softly on the mouth. When he pulled back, there was something different in his eyes.

"If he calls you that again," Keiichi began, entirely calmly, yet his intentions quite clear, "let me know, and I will take care of the situation."

Kozue leaned back, her eyes opening again after a moment, rather satisfied with the situation. He wasn't completely hopeless--and--she flushed. The whole knight in shining armor, defending her thing hadn't gotten old; even if the new to dating (for instance, Kanaye's romance kouhai? well, that made sense) thing had started to stagnate a bit.

"You... I mean, it's kind of how he treats everyone, but, thank you." She smiled, again, more genuinely. "It's a bit uncomfortable, but I'd decided to just get over it."

Which wasn't exactly the case, but she wouldn't admit to having entertained a great many possible but highly improbable ways of getting Kanaye to stop treating her so familiarly, up to and including various methods of bribery and extortion. Giving up and resigning herself was much more in keeping with who she ought to be.

She took a moment to peek back to see how the public make-out couple was doing, vaguely curious: did they go to Nanakamado? Did she know them? Didn't they know that if you were going to hook up in the park, there were far more hidden and off-the-beaten-path spots than this? Honestly. "So what were you planning for our date?" She asked, shaking off the momentary distraction, and looking back to Keiichi.

"It is how he treats everyone, and I was afraid it was going to get us all killed for a while." His voice dropped due to the obviously not-for-public-consumption subject matter. "Second time we went into that place, he and Maeko and Kiriko spent the entire time bickering at each other. Drove me up a tree."

His self-control was in most ways excellent, though it tended to crack in dungeons when he was stressed or angry. "I thought it might be a nice idea to just sit out here, eat, and enjoy the outdoors," Keiichi offered. "Between school and everything else, I almost forgot there *was* an outdoors. It's a beautiful day out. No stress, no annoyances, just us."

God help him, he almost believed it, too. "No stress" was an impossibility these days, though he found with Kozue things were generally better. Probably because she was pretty and, more importantly, seemed to enjoy his company, unlike most of the team who seemed to consider him a slightly naive work colleague.

No stress, of course was impossible for Keiichi. But in this case one wouldn't think it was the worst possible thing to break up a date as a small puppy broke from the underbrush of the nearby trees, and bounded straight toward the couple.

He ran up to Kozue, tail wagging and tongue out. As soon as he got to her he licked her hand and rolled over onto the blanket, exposing his belly to her for the belly rubs he knew she was oh so good at.

She laughed, and was about to respond to what Keiichi had said, when she was interrupted by a tiny ball of absolute adorableness. Kozue blinked, and then, with delight, exclaimed, "Max-chan!" (Of course, it came out more as ma-ku-su-chan.) She was immediately scratching the puppy's belly, with a wide grin all over her face. Whatever she'd been meaning to say to Keiichi had gotten completely lost. Because. Puppy! Cute puppy!

A...puppy. Randomly coming out of nowhere? And moreover, Kozue seemed quite comfortable with it.

"Do you, err, know this puppy," Keiichi asked. Not that he figured it was a prerequisite, of course, Kozue seemed like the sort who would get along well with animals, but still. She seemed very...affectionate towards it. "You called it...Max-chan?" She knew its name. Of course she had to know the puppy.

"Oh, he's Max! Max-chan, say hi to Keiichi-kun," she said, scratching the tiny dog's belly a little more, and nudging him over towards Keiichi. "He's--actually, he's Sagaki-sempai's dog," she offered, conspiratorially, her voice dropping into a near whisper. "He lives in Sagaki-sempai's dorm. And..." She pursed her lips, thinking. The dog wouldn't leave Tom, so Tom was probably in the park... That made sense. "I'm pretty sure that this means that Sagaki-sempai is around here somewhere."

Like, probably hiding in the bushes. She glanced up.

"Sagaki-senpai...has a...puppy?" Unspoken was the "and he doesn't perform scientific experiments on it?"

The dog made its way over to Keiichi, nuzzling at his knee, and Keiichi shrugged and patted it on the head. "Yeah. I imagine he's around here somewhere. He's got a habit of that..."

A habit that never really left Keiichi with a comfortable feeling around the older boy. "Check the bushes," Keiichi offered. "He dragged me into them on the school trip."

Of course, that was when they'd discovered the gym teacher's shadow. Kid was in the right place at the right time a lot.

Almost too much.

Indeed when Kozue and Keiichi looked around the woods, they would be able to spot him standing amongst some nearby bushes. Carrying his bag, with one hand in his pocket, and the other holding Max's leash.

Max however continued to enjoy the attention, and rolled onto his back for Keiichi to give belly rubs... and potentially more from Kozue.

She smiled absently, still scratching the puppy's belly, and then glanced up: "Wait, he dragged you into the bushes? You--" She giggled. "That sounds kind of intimate, you know."

"Oh, there he is. Do you mind if I...?" She nodded towards where Tom was lurking.

Keiichi groaned. "Nothing like that," he responded. "You're the only person I want dragging me into the bushes."

That...might have been the most awkward come on in history, he realized, a bit belatedly.

He nodded at her. "Yeah, let's go see what he's up to. He's usually got something on his mind."

"Come on. I'll drag you into the bushes." She grinned. Wide enough that it was evident that Kozue supported come-ons that were just that awkward. (It's a step in the right direction, after all. Now, if only Sagaki weren't in the bushes, hmm...)

She got to her feet, scooping up Max neatly in one hand--he wagged his tail, pleased at the attention--and offering the other to Keiichi, so that she could in image drag him off, if not in practice. Because in practice? Sort of unfeasible.

Keiichi smiled back at her, and accepted her hand. He off-balanced himself, so that he could properly play along with being dragged into the bushes. Maybe if he was especially fortunate he could somehow shoo Thomas and the dog away.

Probably not, though. Sadly for him.

"Shall we," he asked, letting his grin grow wider.

Tom crossed his arms and leaned against the tree while the two approached. Once Kozue set Max on the ground, the small puppy came running over to Tom.

He actually kneeled down to rub the top of the puppies head before speaking. Max naturally exicted licked Tom's hand.

Tom finally looked up at the two of them.

"I think I have a lead, and we probably have a lot to talk about."

She blinked a little, still fake-pulling Keiichi along by the hand, even though they'd mostly stopped moving.

"Good afternoon to you, too, sempai," she said, without missing a beat -- well, actually, she'd missed one, but just that one. "Fancy meeting you here."

"Thomas," Keiichi said, trying to muster up the enthusiasm to greet him without trying to shoo him away, regaining his footing from being half-dragged. "Nice to see you. Look, I hate to cut things short, but Ko-chan and I are sort of predisposed today. We can talk later? Maybe tomorrow at school?"

Odds of success, minimal, but he'd try at least.

Tom nodded. He replied to Keiichi matter of factly.

"That's alright, she can come along as well. She's a bit smarter then you."

He set Max on the ground and cratched him behind the ears before clipping the leash to him.

"Let's go."

Tom turned to walk away, the dog trotting after without being pulled on. Max did however turn to look back at Keiichi and Kozue expectantly, to ensure that they were indeed coming.

Keiichi was somewhat sure he was supposed to be insulted by that, but he was too annoyed to be bothered.

Hell, he still couldn't believe Tom had a puppy and wasn't doing something like eating or experimenting on it.

He didn't really want to go, but lord knew Thomas wasn't going to shut up about this. "This had better be important," Keiichi growled. He didn't like this one bit, enough that his usual niceties were starting to crack. Clutching at Kozue's hand tighter, he whispered "he's not going to leave us alone unless we go" to her, his annoyance at the older boy barely veiled.

Kozue followed along, nodding a little at what Keiichi had said--"Besides, who knows. Might be important?" She shrugged. Tom was smart, if a little unhinged.

... wait, speaking of smart, had Tom just said he thought she was? Wait. Really?

She shook her head; it was flattery, of course. She tried to ignore the stray thought about it, and focused on Keiichi again: "And we have time. We can always pick up where we left off, later. Somewhere else, if we need more privacy." It could have been 'more privacy from people like Tom' or. Just more privacy.

Somehow, he really liked the idea of more privacy. And she was right, they did have time.

"Alright then, Ko-chan," Keiichi said, then turning his attention to Thomas. "What do you have for us, senpai?"

At the insistence that he drag them away for something important Tom scoffed.

"Please Ito, who do you think I am, Satou? I don't interact with you or your team unless it's important."

He waited for the two of them to discuss in hushed tones before they finally addressed him.

"I originally wanted to find you to talk about Ishino. I think she's the killer, or being targeted. I need you... well... one of you to talk to her for me and confirm. For some reason people get all stand offish when I ask them questions.

First we'll need to swing by the dorms so I can drop off Max. You may want to grab that blanket and your other things."

"Ishino-sensei? No way," Kozue said, shaking her head, and catching up to Tom a little--the hush-hush discussion was over for the moment, it seemed. "I mean. Wait, do you really think she'd be targeted? I couldn't imagine that she was..."

She slowed down a little. "Killer." She squinted at Tom. Her voice dropped again, although this time the whispering was meant to include both of her companions. Just not the puppy. "You really think it's a... that there's a murderer?"

Keiichi...blinked at Tom. Once. Twice. "You are the most paranoid human being on the planet, you know that?"

He was becoming rapidly convinced that Tom was right so often because he thought the most outlandish thing possible in every given situation.

"Let me go get the blanket and basket and we can discuss this," Keiichi finally said, shaking his head. "Honestly, you enjoy being a detective far too much. I'll be right back."

The urge to throttle him was high. Clearly, the older boy had no sense of social grace. He was like an animal. He had an urge, he acted on it. It was...sort of sad, really.

Hopefully by the time Keiichi returned, he'd be slightly less annoyed.

Tom scratched his head, and then put his hands in his pockets. Max wandered around in a circle between Kozue and Tom, before sitting, and then lying down with his tongue hanging out.

Tom watched Keiichi go and collect their things before he chose to answer Kozue, so he avoided having to repeat himself.

When the lanky boy returned, Tom nodded and began his conclusions. Knowing that just like before, once explained they would agree.

"The first victim was Kei Sato, according to rumors he was close to Ishino, or at least one of the students who had an attraction to her.

After his death his body appeared in her classroom. I would write that off as a coincidence... "

Tag shrugged.

"...If I believed in coincidences. But then Aomori. Aomori and Ishino were in a relationship together, and he was the next victim to die.

The other two people targeted were both persona users. While it's possible that Oubai, Ishinomori, Sato, and Aomori have some connection we are as yet unaware of, the fact that all non-persona users to have been put into Paradise are some how connected to Ishino suggests that she may be tied into this some how. Perhaps she's the killer, or perhaps the killer is targeting people around her.

But we can't know for certain until we talk to her, and figure it out."
