IS TIEM TO LEARN ENGRISH!!
Who: Tom and Kozue
What: Tom helps Kozue not flunk English
Where: Tom's dorm room.
When: Thursday afternoon.
Why: Because Kozue is devious

The knock on the door was no surprise to Tom. He really hadn't wanted Kozue to know where his dorm room was, In fact he had told her so, but she simply called him back two minutes later with the exact dorm number. Even then he refused, but she insisted over and over that the study session he had agreed to be held in his room. He finally agreed, but still, it didn't sit well with him.

So when the knock came, he opened the door and simply nodded to her.

"Kondo."

He stepped aside to let her in. And inside Kozue would find a fairly different Tom. In his room he had the weapons he usually carried into Paradise hung up by the closet. This meant he didn't need to wear his uniform blazer, so the blazer shirt, and tie were all hung up in the closet themselves, along with three more copies of the Nanakamdo school uniform, one or two appeared to be rather worse for wear.  There was also a black suit, and a few black t-shirts folded up, but that seemed to be it in the way of clothes.
Tom himself wore the uniform slacks, and a snug black t-shirt which was tight enough to rmeind Kozue of the catsuit he'd worn in Paradise for a short time.

The walls were covered in painters tape, creating lines between taped up peices of paper. On them were numerous notes on subjects such as killer, suspects, paradise and so fourth. As well as Pages on persons of interest, though one spot was suspiciously blank. None of these papers were taped any lower then three feet from the floor.

There were three peices of furniture; a bed, that had a pillow, a blanket, recognizeable as one of the bedding packs one could purchase from the school. There was also a desk with a computer hooked up to it.  The desk had a number of books piled up on top of it, apparently this was a new habit, as gnawed on books and torn out papers still littered the floor. And finally sitting on the floor was the standard small refridgerator.

Also on the floor was a small dish with water, one with food and a dog bed, with a Nanakamado blazer balled up on one side. Sitting on the little dog bad was the little puppy, who sprung up the second he heard the knock, and was at Kozue licking her heals before Thomas even had the door closed.

"Right... sisters."

He moved to sit next to her on the bed, as he looked over the notes. His hand reached out and began to scratch Max just above his back leg. Apparently this was something Tom had done so often he hadn't really noticed he was doing it.

When she flumped about not understanding it he looked at her, the tone didn't change so he certainly wasn't trying to encourage her, or lying to make her feel better, but he spoke as if the things he said were obvious facts.

"Of course you are. You were able to recognize the mistakes you made without me having to tell you, and you know the differences in English vowels, which is relatively hard to get. English has a lot of different rules, and contradictions to those rules, since it was almost created as they went along. It's not like French, they have a whole school dedicated toward making sure their language is used being used properly.

The fact that you can recognize it when you make mistakes is a good sign of your progress. You seem to be a lot smarter then you give yourself credit for."

He leaned back again and pulling his hand from the puppy, and took a look at her worksheet.

"What's next?"

"I give myself all kinds of smartness credit," she said, eyes closed, voice stuffy, wiggling her head a little just to make the joke obvious--but she broke out with a laugh before she could really finish. "I'm no good at school; that's okay though. I just have to not fail out and I'll be fine."

"I just watch some American movies is all, so I know what it sounds like. They're my mother's favorites, you know?" She trailed off, and looked back down at the problem sheet. She shifted on the bed, debating what to do. She could scoot further away--but the dog was in her lap and Tom was petting Max. She could move to the chair, but... same problem. She could move closer to him, too. But he'd specifically said he wasn't interested, and she was dating someone and it wasn't as if Keiichi wouldn't find out if--really, he'd said he wasn't interested. And she wasn't the kind of person who paid for help with her homework like that.

So what was he doing over here then? She couldn't quite figure it out.

Tom shook his head and waved almost dismissively at her claims.

"Despite how stubborn, and paranoid I am, you managed to find a way to get into my room. You are the first human being to ever set foot in this room. Even if you have trouble keeping your marks up, that does not negate the fact that you are obviously intelligent."

Tom slumped back, and very distinctly stopped petting the dog. He looked away from Kozue and spoke quietly.

"My mother preferred some American music."

Luckily, he was looking away when she smiled, feeling profoundly flattered. Her response, though, was careful, slow and meticulous. After all, he'd gotten angry the last time she'd tried to pry personal details from him.

"My mother's hafu - I didn't know if you knew, but..." She trailed off and shrugged. Some people did; some people didn't. And maybe it would make Tom feel more comfortable. Of course, Kozue was now predicting the if you're half-American why don't you know English questions that she usually got - her English teacher in Middle School had even lectured her about that, on more than one occasion: how he expected more from her, based on her family background.

"I did know. You're hair is a dead give away. Even if you'd dyed it, and curled it, the curls wouldn't stay in all day."

He stood up and moved back to the chair. He sat down and leaned against it. Tom's responses were also of the careful variety. It seemed he was determined not to give any further details about himself.

"You're mothers life must have been difficult."

"O-oh. Yeah." She brushed a few strands of that curly and utterly non-Japanese hair out of her face. Right. Of course. She sometimes got the impression that everyone knew about her background, but was just too polite to mention it to her face. (Because naturally, any mention of it would have to be bad, right?)

"She takes it all in stride really well." At least, she took it in stride much better now that she lived on a different island from her in-laws. But Kozue's voice, and the little lift of her chin as she spoke, proved that she was in fact quite proud of her mother. "But yeah - my grandparents haven't really made it any easier on her."

"My family... is... "

Tom paused, as if searching for the words. After a moment he sighed like he was giving up.

"... nothing."

He shook his head. And his expressions became steel.

"They're nothing. We should get back to your notes, you didn't come here to discuss family."

He crossed his arms.

"...Except for how to translate it... to english."

Tom signed again.

"You don't have to talk about it," she said, shrugging, looking back at her homework to hide her grin. Right; eat your words. We're not here to talk about family. "I just think it's more interesting to chat while I work." Another, smaller shrug, and she circled another answer; it was probably right.

"Do you have some homework you have to do? Or..."

Tom shrugged and spoke in an almost offhand manner.

"I finish all my homework as soon as I get it, so I can focus on the case.

Since I do a lot of research on my own, I have a pretty good idea of where most of the information I need to do it is. So I get it done quickly.

I've also been faking my grades so they keep me in easier classes. It's entirely possible that I could have graduated already if I put my efforts towards my school work. Or at the very least some kind of advanced class meant to challenge very intelligent students."

Kozue blinked. And blinked again. Well, that was... direct, she supposed. And completely without humility. I could have already graduated if I wanted? Wow. She hung out with guys with real egos, and that was still unusual.

"So why stick around? The case?" Or because you've got superpowers? She had a sourish expression on her face, although she tried to dull it and look more pleasant--less judgmental. The incredulity in her voice, she disguised slightly less. If he was really smart, why would he purposefully screw up on school-work? Especially if it was easy for him?

"I didn't say that if I would graduate, I said it was possible. It's far more likely that they would stick me in some kind of class where I would get all kinds of work that would require me to actually do the school work or get thrown out."

Tom shook his head and looked away, both from Kozue and Max it seemed.

"Either way, once I graduate, I... won't really be anything, while I'm here I can do something."

Kozue pursed her lips, puzzled, trying to figure through Tom's claims. It was odd; she wasn't sure what to make of it--at least, aside from the fact that Tom was being awfully fatalistic with that whole 'do the work or get thrown out' thing. It was a little more nuanced than that, Kozue knew, from her own brushes with slightly less than average grades.

"I don't know if that'd be enough to get you chucked out..." She shook her head, ignoring her homework completely now. "I mean, not that I know--really, you know." She stalled, and her face softened a little as she went through what else he'd said. He'd be nothing? She felt a pang of sympathy, and immediately decided she was probably imagining it. "What do you mean, nothing?"

Tom frowned slightly at her insinuation that not doing the work would get one thrown from the school.

"It is with my reputation." Tom paused and thought. "...That is, the reputation I had when I joined the school, not the one I've made since I came here."

Tom looked at her, slightly confused, and ran a hand up his arm. He wondered whether her question about nothing was in reference to his family, or his future. He decided on which of the two questions he wanted to avoid answering less.

"Well I don't think I'll take over my families company, I have my doubts about the police force.
I dunno... maybe I could... I guess if Paradise isn't a one time thing I could maybe do something with that."

"Huh. How would you make a career out of Paradise?"

Kozue wasn't sure if she felt skeptical or intrigued; she was sort of wobbling between them, wondering how someone would even go about that. What, could he run tours? Or sell Persona Power or something?

Actually, if Kozue had been a more entrepreneurial person, she might have been much more engaged by ideas like that, since she had the general impression that it might work out really well, but as it was, they just seemed bizarre to her.

"Is it not a family-run corporation in that way? Like, you have..." She rolled her hand in a circle, looking for business terms. "Stock-holders or trustees or whatever? Or you've got older siblings who'll take over the company instead?" Since those were the only two options she could think of; the two options that made sense in her world. Either some silly corporate rules blocked Tom's father from giving him the business, or there were other, better suited siblings somewhere.

"I would travel around informing Persona users. I would be able to explain to them what happened."

Tom shrugged. He didn't seem bothered when he spoke, just his usual distant tone.

"I guess there's not a lot of money to be made from it.

I'm sure my father, or his company would pick whom they believed would be the best qualified to run the company. It's not some sort of Dynasty. And I know he doesn't want me involved... with... anything in his life really."

Tom pushed the chair closer to the desk, and looked away from Kozue.

"We're getting off topic though. You have homework you should be doing."

"Do you think there are other people who can do this? Somewhere?" She seemed genuinely interested; she's almost piped up when he'd first brought it up, but held her tongue out of politeness. He wasn't done speaking, after all.

"I kind of thought we were the only ones..." Her voice sort of deflated, and she looked back down at her homework. But only briefly. This was a more interesting discussion, and she'd take weird Paradise stuff over her English homework any day.

Tom moved toward his computer and flipped it on again.

"Well, that's a valid possibility, given that no one has ever found anything like this as far as we know.

Like I said in the library, I've been researching anything online that may sound like Paradise, to see how far it goes, or if there is a history around just Nanakamdo.

It's also possible that only certain people have the potential to be persona users, so we may be the only ones."

He looked over toward the first year.

"Though at the end of the day, we're th eones who have th epower now, so we're the only people who can stop the killer."
