IS TIEM TO LEARN ENGRISH!!
Who: Tom and Kozue
What: Tom helps Kozue not flunk English
Where: Tom's dorm room.
When: Thursday afternoon.
Why: Because Kozue is devious

The knock on the door was no surprise to Tom. He really hadn't wanted Kozue to know where his dorm room was, In fact he had told her so, but she simply called him back two minutes later with the exact dorm number. Even then he refused, but she insisted over and over that the study session he had agreed to be held in his room. He finally agreed, but still, it didn't sit well with him.

So when the knock came, he opened the door and simply nodded to her.

"Kondo."

He stepped aside to let her in. And inside Kozue would find a fairly different Tom. In his room he had the weapons he usually carried into Paradise hung up by the closet. This meant he didn't need to wear his uniform blazer, so the blazer shirt, and tie were all hung up in the closet themselves, along with three more copies of the Nanakamdo school uniform, one or two appeared to be rather worse for wear.  There was also a black suit, and a few black t-shirts folded up, but that seemed to be it in the way of clothes.
Tom himself wore the uniform slacks, and a snug black t-shirt which was tight enough to rmeind Kozue of the catsuit he'd worn in Paradise for a short time.

The walls were covered in painters tape, creating lines between taped up peices of paper. On them were numerous notes on subjects such as killer, suspects, paradise and so fourth. As well as Pages on persons of interest, though one spot was suspiciously blank. None of these papers were taped any lower then three feet from the floor.

There were three peices of furniture; a bed, that had a pillow, a blanket, recognizeable as one of the bedding packs one could purchase from the school. There was also a desk with a computer hooked up to it.  The desk had a number of books piled up on top of it, apparently this was a new habit, as gnawed on books and torn out papers still littered the floor. And finally sitting on the floor was the standard small refridgerator.

Also on the floor was a small dish with water, one with food and a dog bed, with a Nanakamado blazer balled up on one side. Sitting on the little dog bad was the little puppy, who sprung up the second he heard the knock, and was at Kozue licking her heals before Thomas even had the door closed.

Tom stood up and began walking around the room. English was easy and he had other things to work on, so he saw no problem with reviewing his notes in between helping out Kozue. It was certainly that, and not a desire to avoid answering her first question. Certainly.

"It takes some practice to do it right. You've lived in Japan since birth right? You're entire life you've spoken a language that doesn't have that letter it in.
Just because you hear a sound a bird makes doesn't mean you can imitate it exactly on the first try."

"You know, we're not graded all that much on pronunciation," she pointed out, continuing to shower distracted affection upon the tiny dog in her lap. "I don't mind practicing that, but I really just want to not fail the English exams."

"That stuff about the bird is pretty, though." She tipped her head back, imagining it. An unusually poetic thing for Tom to say - another contradiction - she usually didn't have trouble making sense of people, but he was a knot of confusing aspects that refused to pull apart under her scrutiny.

"Yes, I have lived here all my life - in Hokkaido, mostly, too. But I heard you lived abroad - did you learn English while you were there? Was it hard?" Obviously, he was fluent - she'd heard him talking, like in the meeting, and he carried around English books like that Paradise Lost thing.

With renewed affection being showered upon him, Max rolled over so Kozue could provide him with belly rubs, he expected her, like a good human, to understand and react to the commands he gave her.

Tom finished looking around the room, and his gaze returned to Kozue.

"I was born in the United States, and lived there until I was twelve."

He took a few steps closer to look down at her notes.

"Why okay so you said when you are not in school you live with your mother, father and grandparents. So in Japanese you say okaasan, and in english that's pronounced Mother, otousan is pronounced father, and your grandparents would be grandmother for obaasan and grandfather for ojiisan."

"Oh, so was English your first language?" She asked, intrigued, only half following the lesson now. She had learned all these things in class, at least twice by now. "I guess it must have been, if you were born in the US? So, where did you live?"

All the while, Kozue was scratching Max's belly with one hand, and holding her textbook open with the other. Oh, he was such a good puppy! Such a good puppy! She totally got all the puppy-love-cues, and followed them. When she got married, she was definitely getting a dog - maybe her future husband could buy her one as an engagement gift, one of those really expensive tiny ones... Hmmm.

"Manhattan. It's uh... In New York City. We moved in 2009 right about when the stock market ran into a lot of problems.... That was a bad year."

He spoke the last part just a bit quieter then the rest.

Tom paused.

"You know everyone keeps asking me about my past. Do you guys really think I'm going to give up sensitive information that easily?"

She blinked. "Sensitive information? I didn't know that where you lived was sensitive, I'm sorry, Sagaki-sempai. Although I did tell you where I'm from." She nodded, coming up with this approach rather on the spot. Fairness had seemed to appeal to him before, when she'd gotten him to agree to tutoring in the first place.

"And I know where Manhattan is. I've been there before." She smiled, proud of her rather mundane geographical knowledge. Then again, who didn't know what Manhattan was?

"No I meant... information about my past. Shaking me down to try and figure me out like an interrogation.

You already managed to get into my room I don't know that it's wise for me to reveal anymore about myself that you can use against me."
Now that he thought about it, it did make sense; Kondo was here to spy on him for team Persona. Aoi had failed to find out anything, he'd expected Nawanaka, but Kondo had been learning quite a bit as it was.

"What. Shake you down for information? Interrogation?" She stared at him.

"Do I look like a vigilante or a police officer to you? Or -- I don't know, someone else who would interrogate? I'm trying to be nice, Sagaki-sempai, not... make a dossier on you or something." She shook her head, and looked back down at her text books. "And how is this shaking you down?"

Clearly, she was missing the shaking part.

"You're trying to be... nice?"

Tom looked at Kozue with utter confusion. The same look she would have received if she had also chosen to inform him that she was trying to fly, or breathe atomic breath.

"...why?"

She shrugged. "I felt like it. And if I'm nice maybe you'll tell me the answers for my homework. Which is the right indefinite article: a mother or an mother?"

Yes, that quickly, she was off onto her worksheet; she had a list of questions she had to answer for class tomorrow, and no idea what answers were right. Of course she could have looked them up - her textbook was here, too - but that was time consuming and she had a native speaker right here. Why waste all that effort?

"A mother, an is only used for words that begin with vowels... oh yeah vowels is going to be a whole... mess."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose. Pretending to be nice to get something out of him made a lot more sense then just because she felt like it. No on is nice because they feel like it.

What, did he think she was really stupid, as opposed to just shitty at English? "I know what a vowel is," she said, rather testy, twirling her pen between her fingers. "So that's the rule. I always forget about how it works."

She checked off the correct box and, to her credit, did the next problem silently, pausing to nibble on the eraser of her pencil for a moment while she pondered "a grandmother".

"I might not speak English, but I have studied for exams in it every year since middle school."

He shook his head.

"No it's... in Japanese you only have five vowels. In English you have five... sometimes other times... six, and each vowel has multiple methods of pronunciation."

The puppy nudged Kozue's arm, she was no longer paying him the appropriate amount of attention. He tried to push his way under her arm, and into her lap.

"Here, c'more," she said, addressing Max, and letting him climb up into her lap; she smoothed down her skirt a little for him to find a comfortable place, and went back to scratching at his ears and head. "Yeah, long a and short a and... Oh, what do you call those things. Dipthings." She shrugged.

"Okay, let's see if I can get this right."

Gee, did she have to hold his hand while he tutored her? She sighed, and read off the next problem. "I do not have..." a pause. "Any sister. Wait, did I make it - damn, I didn't make it plural." She sighed. "I'm never going to get this, am I."
