WHO: Renju, Tom, Kozue, and any others who choose to drop in.
WHAT: Research.
WHERE: Nanakamado library.
WHEN: Saturday after school.
WHY: Because Renju needs to stay sane somehow.

Work was Renju's usual coping mechanism when things went outside the ordinary. Denied it, she'd go crazy. She knew this from experience--leaving school last term was probably the worst thing she could have done. Lack of work led to boredom led to dwelling on things best not dwelled on.

But today she couldn't concentrate... or rather, she could only concentrate on all the wrong things. The other world--or whatever "Paradise" was--and the strange behavior of the others who apparently knew about it had crowded everything else from her head. And as if that weren't bad enough, even she couldn't help but notice all the gossip surrounding the abrupt end to the school trip. Too many fragments, and nothing she could get from them.

She retreated deeper into her pile of books, trying to shut it out. The book on Western mythology she was flipping through right now wasn't really much help in finding the... whatever it was that had emerged back at the museum, but damned if she wasn't going to try anyway.

Kozue sat down, pulling books from her bag, and smiling gratefully at Renju; that was nice of her, a quality that maybe her table-mate could pick up, if he were to focus extra, extra hard. "What year are you in?" She asked curiously, looking at the other girl. "First, or second?" After all, Renju was about her height, and if there were any third years that were as short as she was, she'd eat her foot.

"Oh, that's okay, sempai," she said, looking back at Tom as she opened her notebook. "Perhaps you can help me out the next time you need someone to question for your research, though." She kept up her smile, and though it lost a little warmth around her eyes, it only lost a little; she was awfully good at faking smiles.

"Second year." Though Renju also buried herself in her book, it was more shyness and less walling herself off as Sagaki-senpai was. She could still feel a hint of a flush on her cheeks, and somehow that just made matters worse.

She was mildly puzzled about his suggestion to Kondo-san--how on earth did he remember what was on what page?--but curiosity got the better of her, and she flipped forward to the page he'd indicated. It was the beginning of an entry on the Persephone myth, which she'd encountered in another book. It took her a moment to recognize it, though, since it insisted on using a different name for Persephone--"Kore".

She looked from it to Kozue and back again. Was she..?

Kozue's comments seemed to strike Tom dumb. He hung his head slightly. Humanity, as Tom understood it, operated on a payment system. Kozue had helped him understand the whole physical situation, and now he owed her.

"I can teach you to speak English."

"Well, just English as it relates to me not failing this term's exams," Kozue said, nodding. Score one for the.... well, for Team Kozue. She could be a team if she wanted. She smiled a little, anyway. "I'd be very grateful."

Sitting next to Renju as she was, she glanced over at the other girl's book, open to a page on -- Kore? Really? What were the chances? She glanced at the book, and then up at the corner of the page. Oh. Page 43. Had Tom meant that for her? So she looked at the book, up at Tom, and then back to Renju and the book, and missed the other girl's double take at her. "Oh, that looks interesting," she commented, carefully. "What's this article on? Mind if I look over your shoulder, or...?"

Yeah. No matter how careful she might try to be, it wasn't going to outweigh her curiosity. There was no way Kozue was keeping her keen, sudden interest from being obvious to anyone who was actually paying attention.

"You can go ahead and take it." Renju's carefully neutral tone masked her curiosity as she passed over the book, her thumb making sure the page didn't flip over or something. The odds that either of them was into something this esoteric just out of the blue were pretty slim, really, especially just one specific myth...

All right, that was it, enough beating around the bush. She knew about Sagaki-senpai, she'd practically had a sign of Kondo-san's involvement handed to her on a platter, and there was really no reason why they shouldn't know, was there?

... none except her own awkwardness. She slid an old book of Aeschylus's plays in translation from the middle of a stack and flipped through it a bit.

Tom looked at Renju with curious eyes. Something about the girl was odd. She seemed half like she wanted to say something, and half like she wanted to hide something. A thought occurred to Tom and he stood suddenly.

He walked away from the table, and after a few seconds away, he returned with a large book, and set it down in front of Renju, the title written in English.

"This might help as well. It's one of my favorites. The title is Paradise Lost."

Kozue had taken the book on myths, immediately enthralled, and not particularly attentive to what her two 'study buddies' were up to. It was an article on her Persona - imagine that, of all things. She'd tried searching it online once on her phone, but nothing had come up; what a fortuitous chance that she'd stumbled upon Tom in the library. (Although it was odd that Renju and not Tom had had the book in the first place, Kozue put the thought aside.)

Okay, Greek, maiden goddess, mother, harvest, blah blah... She read, fascinated. And then stopped, her face going just a bit white. And then what happened to her? Oh, boy, that didn't-- That was the god-monster living in her head?

She looked up, obviously perturbed, and focused instead on the book Tom had brought over; "Oh, what's that? Para-" she stopped, sounding out the rest in her head. Wait, what? God, but it was a confusing day all of a sudden.

"'Paradise', huh...?"

Renju finally set her book down and aside rather than hiding behind it. If Sagaki-senpai was going to drag this out into the open, well, she might as well acknowledge it.

"I found out about it during the trip to the museum," she admitted quietly, not meeting his eyes. "A few of us tried out the rumor, and Ito-san found us there. He showed us the cellphone trick."

Tom raised an eyebrow. He lifted the book from the table, and put it int he middle of Renju's pile, so that no one else might make certain connections.

"Well that is as good an argument for fate as I have ever heard.

So you'll be joining the club then."

"If that's what you want to call it." There was a bit of flintiness in Renju's tone; she hadn't forgotten the story Tom had chased her off with in the woods. It was understandable at the time, but it didn't make her any less annoyed.

Well, not much less annoyed.

"O-Oh." Kozue nodded, surprised. Well, shit, that changed things, and for a moment she wasn't sure if the proper response was my condolences or congratulations. So, she settled on, "Weird, isn't it?"

And then, to clarify, as she slowly slid the book of mythology away, not wanting to think about it or read it anymore, ew ew ew, "No, we really are an official school club. Well, now we are." She glanced at Tom. "Sagaki-sempai instated us as a club or something."

Tom shifted uncomfortably and looked around the library, to make sure no one was listening.

"It's best to try and limit our discussions in public, but someone had to cover up what these people are doing. I don't think anyone who hadn't been would understand it.

So I set things up so we would have a reason to be around each other, and try and figure out who's doing this, without arousing too much suspicion.

... As long as some group members can try not to be complete idiots."

Renju bit back her immediate, instinctual answer regarding Reizo, but her frown remained, and the fact that the club story had technically been literally true didn't put her much at ease.

"The story about the club didn't help much back in the woods," she admitted. "I think the problem has more to do with getting everyone to act less suspicious when that sort of thing comes up."

Kozue nodded. "It's one of many problems." Actually, Renju had seen, firsthand, most of the problems. Arguing, insults, violence, suspicion, the whole nine yards. And eavesdroppers, too, but Kozue wasn't going to point that bit out. "And - come on, Sagaki-sempai, let's try and be positive when we can."

Tom looked at Kozue confused.

"Positive how? This is what people are. Wishing for them to be nice and friendly isn't going to change human nature."

Tom lifted the book up again with a sigh.

"Personally I think if they were all organized into small units it'd be easier to get things done. If Ikeda wasn't afraid of her potential she could focus them into a fight... into a workable group."

"It'd help keep the peace," she pointed out. "It's not... wishing, it's helping people get along just a little bit better with some ... well, more constructive opinions. Slightly more."

She shrugged when he got to discussion of strategy, and, a bit brusquely, finished with "As far as strategy goes, I don't know anything about that. Sorry."

Renju had never particularly enjoyed not being able to follow a conversation, and she couldn't quite shake the feeling that there were a couple of links missing in this one that would clear up why they were talking like they were fighting some kind of war over on the other side.

She spoke up somewhat tentatively, finding what appeared to be something of a break in the conversation. "Ito-san didn't really have time to explain what you all do in there besides fighting these 'Shadow' creatures."

Tom looked between the two women. And thought for a moment. Information was the best weapon, and the more they knew the better their chances.

"Well... there's a lot of information, and some theories I've started to work on as I research. How much do you want to know?"

He looked back and fourth between the two of them, so that Kozue could weigh in as it were.

"Wait, you have lots of information? And theories? Where have I been for all of this? Because all I know is that I'm confused and none of it makes sense."

She watched Sagaki, curious. Did he really have a whole bunch of information that nobody else did, or was he totally shitting her?

Kozue's comment brought Renju up a bit short. Sagaki-senpai had sounded like he knew what he was talking about, and didn't really seem like the type to be stingy with information. Still, anything she could get was good, even if it was questionably useful, as long as she excluded the rampant speculation for now.

"Whatever facts you can tell me would help. I think it would be better for me to save the theories for when I understand what's going on."

Tom nodded.

"Well we can't discuss private stuff for our club here."

He stood up and waved for both girls to do like wise.

"Follow me."

He grabbed his books, and took them to the front desk. Including the copy of the Odyssey he took from Renju's pile. Once they were out o fthe library, he lead them down the winding halls of Nanakamado, until they reached a long hallway the ended in a single class room; Room 22-C.

Tom opened the door, and let both girls in before he closed the door.

"I forged some memos between the music teacher and the principal, moving her to a room with better acoustics. That left this room completely free. No one comes all the way down the hall unless they are coming to this room so you can keep an eye out for people following you, and the sound baffling makes it near impossible to eavesdrop.

I offered it up to the Persona users, but... since I interrogated Oubai in here I don't think they'll want to use it."

It wasn't that Tom didn't seem to care about the horrible things he'd done, in fact there was almost a hint of sadness in his voice, a resigned depression. But that certainly didn't mean he was showing remorse.

Renju had brought her stack of books over in two trips, and so a delicate balancing act was required to bring them all back over in one. With each stack nearly reaching the top of her head, she was forced to peer around and follow Tom's footsteps in order to pull it off without slamming into anything. Vowing to do her research online next time, she left the books at the front desk and followed him down the hall.

... where she found out something very dismaying, to say the least. "You forged official memos?" The benefits didn't even seem relevant in the face of that. "And you interrogated another student?" She was equal parts shocked, baffled, and even a little angry. "What could be so important about Paradise that it justifies something like that?"

Kozue had trailed along, curious as to where Tom was taking them; it had been a good idea not to talk about Persona and Paradise in the Library - heaven only knew they didn't need any other people over-hearing and testing out the rumor and ending up with gods in their heads, too.

Once they were in the room, she looked around, somewhat impressed; it was nice, at least. And if it really helped stop eavesdropping--she almost didn't process what Sagaki was saying, until Renju's dismayed objection caught her attention. Sucking in a breath and hoping that this wasn't about to be another nasty team argument, Kozue tried... well, tried to smooth things over. As best she could.

"Well, Sonozaki-sempai, to be perfectly honest, we think that it might have killed Sato-sempai." Her voice was quiet; she had started off looking directly at Renju, but she turned her head down and away, slightly, as she continued. "At least, some of us do. The team kind of disagrees about it - but right now I believe that it's a really dangerous place, and people have gotten stuck there - and I'm pretty sure I believe it had something to do with Sato's death, too. I think that's a pretty important reason..." She glanced up at Thomas; "... why did you interrogate Oubai-sempai, exactly?"

Interrogate was, at the end of the day, an awfully strong word.

"At the time I didn't know about any of this, just that he had disappeared. I was trying to solve the murder of Kei Sato."

Tom slid his hand along the wall as they entered the room. Ever sense he had allied with these people they had questioned his methods and reasoning like he was some kind of... crazy person.

He wasn't entirely sure what Kondo was up, but she seemed to have the right idea, so rather then wait for them to ask and ask until they had forced the answers out of him like Ito had, he would just give them his entire reasoning. Usually when he did that people left him alone.

"As far as the room goes, it used to be the music room. Not terrible, until the other teachers in this hall complained and they put in sound baffles. It ruined the acoustics."

He looked back at the two women.

"When I went to the Principal to create our club, I noticed several memos from the music teacher asking for a better room. The Principal has been far too busy just keeping the school open when his students are being attacked and murdered. So I found a room that worked, and moved her class there. She gets what she wants, and the Principal has one less bureaucratic issue to deal with.

Everyones problems are solved, and now there is a spare class room that no one realizes isn't being used for classes. The sound proofing makes it hard to eavesdrop, because it's at the very end of the hall, no one goes past 22-b unless they are going here, we can see if anyone is following us. It has closets so we can slip into Paradise if need be.

There are no laws regarding Paradise, the current rules of the school, and laws of the government were made without knowledge of that world, so they do not take it's existence into account. Ergo, we cannot rely on the current rules and laws to dictate our actions. To do so would only serve to put others in danger. Which is, morally, not the right thing to do.

In order to do what is right there are laws we may have to disregard."

He looked to Renju and Kozue, waiting for them to approve his logic. People usually did when he took the time to spell it out for them.

Renju sat down on one of the desks, her heel tapping idly against a leg. She didn't know quite what to say at first--apparently that chance excursion into Paradise meant that she was getting pulled into something stranger and more dangerous than she could have imagined, even considering what the place was.

"It makes sense," she finally admitted quietly. It seemed like there ought to be a more legitimate way to go about the whole thing, but it made sense, and you did what you had to do in these situations. She wasn't happy, but she wasn't going to press the point.

"But if this is a murder investigation," she added abruptly, something suddenly occurring to her, "why don't you talk to the police? All of this sounds unbelievable, but if you show them Paradise, and if everyone gets a Persona there..."

Kozue appropriated a desk for herself as well, sitting down while Tom spoke. "Sempai, you still haven't explained why you interrogated someone. Or what that even means. Did you, like, torture him or something?" After all, Tom was half--

Kozue realized the slightly unfortunate, and really rude, implications of her question and thought train, just a few moments after speaking, and looked down again. Or - oh, wait, she could answer Renju's question. Well, why didn't they tell the police about it?

"That's a... that's a pretty good question, actually, but I think it'd probably go badly. What if they didn't believe us - or if it was only kids who went into Paradise who got a Persona, or... or Nanakamado Students. Maybe they put something in the drinking fountains and it's all some crazy science experiment like a bad movie." She shrugged; now the excuses she was coming up with were too far-fetched to make sense, even when compared with Paradise.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Tom looked at Kozue sideways at her suggestions of torture. He said interrogation, not torture, there was a very distinct difference in those words, that at least Tom understood.

"We also have no proof that Paradise did kill Sato. And the police are likely not going to accept the explanation of Paradise unless we drag them to a door and push them in.

There's also the possibility that we would get accused, or taken out of school for study or something of that nature. Each of us has been contaminated by our contact with that world.

And even if they didn't take us in, they would shut down Nanakamado.

And as Kondo said, given the abstract nature of Paradise, it's possible that only certain people can actually perceive it. Like Persona users, assuming that people don't automatically get a persona when they enter Paradise.

As it stands it's far too easy for them to dismiss us, and if they did believe us, and if they did believe us, I have my doubts about the conclusion they would come to. Until we have answers, and more information, it would be best to keep this a secret."

Most of the offered scenarios weren't exactly wholly satisfying to Renju, but the idea of being taken for study made her stomach turn, and it seemed entirely too plausible. Revealing the existence of something like Paradise did carry some serious risks with it. "I suppose," she murmured, conceding the point. Still, if things got really, life-threateningly bad, she wasn't going to leave that option off the table.

She realized, disconcertingly, that Tom seemed to be avoiding Kozue's question about Kou, and decided to press the issue. "So what, exactly, happened with Oubai-san? I know Ito-san said that Paradise was involved in his disappearance somehow..."

Tom hadn't actually been avoiding the question, he just didn't explain because it was mostly a dead end.

"Before I knew about Paradise, his disappearence matched the stories of Sato's so I thought there was a connection.

I brought him down here and locked the door, then questioned him about him vanishing.

He lied and said he had run away."

Tom moved to sit down at one of the chairs finally.

"In truth he had been taken to Paradise, where the other Persona users saved him."

Okay, so he hadn't tortured Kou or anything insane like that. That was kind of a relief. (It also worried Kozue that for a brief second she had been completely ready to believe that Tom would do that. And that, believing that, here she was still sitting in a room with him and only one other person.)

Still, he'd locked a kouhai in an empty classroom and questioned him? The casual admission, and the fact that both she and Renju had had to question him about it, left a sort of queasy feeling in Kozue's stomach.

"So that's kind of where we are. Everyone disagrees about whether Sato-sempai died because of Paradise, and how dangerous it is." She frowned, and looked down a little.

Renju had to admit she'd half-expected worse, but the whole thing still left a bad taste in her mouth. She was beginning to see where some of the rumors about him might have come from, if this was the sort of thing he could do without a second thought.

She was silent for a long moment, chewing on her bottom lip and debating with herself whether to speak up about it. She'd seen how well that had worked with Shirai-kun, and while she doubted Sagaki-senpai was quite that dangerous...

"But why did you..." She cut herself off with a shake of her head before the sentence, or even the thought, was more than half-formed. "... never mind. So is that all that you know about it?"

"Actually I know quite a bit more."

Tom shrugged.

"Technically they're theories, but nothing can ever be completely proven. Honestly I don't know why the others didn't begin study immediately. You know start building a base of knowledge.

It seems like it's all based on unconscious mental manipulation. I've done some hefty research, plus looking to see if anyone reported something like this occurring elsewhere. Seeing how far out Paradise goes, and how long it's been around.

I've found 268 cases that have something in common with our experiences in paradise, I've gone through 86 of them so far, and nothing that really lines up yet."

Renju really wasn't quite sure how to respond to this. Sagaki-senpai had obviously done his homework on the subject (and she wasn't sure whether she was more relieved or scared that there were other similar cases), but he seemed to be taking this all scarily in stride. Even Ito-san still seemed somewhat disturbed by it, and he was one of the steadier people she knew.

Then again, she was more than familiar with work as a coping mechanism--and, really, wasn't that what she'd just been doing? Maybe that was all it was.

She finally settled on a fairly neutral response. "It seems like I have a lot to catch up on."
