WHO: Kozue and Kiriko
WHAT: A much less serious conversation
WHEN: Some time after this.
WHERE: Their room, of course.
WHY: Shut up. I have my reasons.

Kozue had come down from the feeling of euphoria and enlightenment and whatever not-Buddhist-because-what-did-Persephone-have-to-do-with-the-Buddha sorts of sensations she'd been feeling. What remained was the need to share her finds with Kiriko, and find a way to make sense of it. Well, logical sense––emotionally it was all in order, but the facts and the logic needed putting together, and that was Kiriko's zone of effectiveness.

"So, like I said, about my gr–– well, about me not being exactly the portion of half I always thought," she started.

"You'll never believe this." She laced her fingers, setting down the mug of hot cocoa. Kozue scarcely believed it. "My grandmother. She was half. It was… nobody ever talked about it, I'm not sure who even knows."

Kiriko's mouth fell open - then, disappeared behind one hand, save for the corners of it, turned up in a half-hidden grin. It was the expression of delicious, delicious scandal. She was halfway between a chuckle and a gasp, at once disbelieving and knowing that it was too good not to be true.

"What? You're serious? Really?"

"Dead serious," Kozue nods, "I have the paperwork from the city hall here, to prove––well, okay, not totally prove it but that's got to be it. She definitely wasn't a legitimate child," she was willing to at least admit that her theory might not be true. But she felt it in her bones; was convinced of its truth.

The contents of the envelope were emptied into Kiriko's hands within seconds. She scanned it, verified it, checked again, and looked up, quietly but visibly impressed with Kozue's sleuthing.

"Nobody ever told you?"

"She certainly never did, and I don't even know who else knew. Her last sibling died in '99, and maybe my grandfather and my father never even knew." She paused. "She looked more like my brother––she could fake it easier." Which, obviously, Fumiko had; anyone accusing her of being less than full Japanese would have been met with perplexity and rage.

"I know for a fact my mom never found it, because she'd have never kept it quiet."

Setting the koseki next to her on the bed, Kiriko leaned back against the wall. She never would have suspected - not even a little bit. And yet, it made some measure of sense, didn't it? The shame it caused her, she passed on to Kozue.

"So... what tipped you off, then?" The folder looked crisp and new - not something she'd found by accident, rummaging through old files (as if Kozue was the type to go rummaging through old files in the first place).

Kozue was hardly even the type of person who could find old files if pressed, much less the type who liked to go rummaging through them. This had, quite completely, been action against type; maybe it was even a change. Kozue wasn't sure. It didn't mean that she'd spend a lot of time researching, at least; this much was clear.

"The… this sounds dumb, but the unit in science. I think it's the first time all year that something I learned in school has been useful."

Kiriko pondered this. Of course, that made sense - the genetics part, anyway, the part where Kozue had been paying attention to her homework was actually somewhat mystifying. It didn't sound dumb, though - just strange.

"So are you gonna tell everyone?"

"Dunno," Kozue said; this question had not really occurred to her. "About my persona, that's pretty obvious, so I'm going to have to say something, but do you think it really matters to them if I'm quarter or a little more than quarter?"

It made a very large difference to her; but what difference could it make to so many other members of the team or people in her life?

"I meant your family," she answered, also wondering why it would make much difference to the team. Maybe to Tom, but he probably knew before she did. "Your mother would want to know, wouldn't she?"

"Oh. I… I don't know, I think they deserve to know, but I don't know if it wouldn't just hurt people. Like my dad," for one, who was arguably more affected than she had been, and now Kozue paused to wonder just what his relationship with Fumiko had been like––really like, in the years before Maria had come onto the scene and he had become a "traitor" and a "foreigner-lover". What had he been before?

"I'm going to show Shinji, at least. Maybe Mom. I don't know how well my dad, or… wow, my grandfather, would take it."
