Who: Kozue + Renju
What: Snacking.
Where: Local Pastry Shop.
When: Upon her return from Ancestral Home/Funeral Town.
Why: Hunger.

There was a long line today at the tiny bakery shop in Iburi; maybe there was a sale. Certainly, there were crowds of customers coming and going, flowing through the two registers at either side of the large glass display.

Except for how only one of the registers was really operating at the moment, and the poor boy who staffed it, a high school student from one of the schools less prestigious than Nanakamado, looked harried half to death. The customers looked mildly irate.

The staffer for the other register didn't seem to care.

Kondo Kozue was wearing black—she was in mourning, after all, even if she didn't precisely feel that way—and standing to the side of the display case, staring intently at the various pastries. She had come because she was hungry, but cooking had completely daunted her and she had missed the provided meal at school; besides, after all of that? She deserved a splurge in the calorie department. "So between the flan and the Napoleon, which do you think I should get?"

"I don't," the cafe worker swallowed dryly; he was another high schooler, but he was a Nanakamado student in the third year, and well recognized one of the most popular (and infamous) first years. "I don't really know, I guess..." And oh, how she made him very nervous.

"Okay, well, what about between these two? I just can't pick." And she did look concerned; she was pointing at two different chocolate cake slices now. "Or should I get something fruity?"

"N-not all that much yet, to be honest." It was a little weird having that intensity turned on her, rather than the other way around. She tugged lightly at her collar, the thin shirt feeling a little warm even for early September. She'd never seen this from Kozue before, and she'd be lying if she said it wasn't unsettling.

"I never had much independence back then, so I'm not even quite certain where to start. I'm still working on... everything, really."

She continued staring; her mouth wrinkled slightly. "Independence, yeah?" She stepped back from the counter a little, not really looking at her food at all, as if it had slipped entirely from her mind.

"So what do you think I should do with mine?"

Renju considered this for a moment. She was having enough trouble working out what to do with her own independence, let alone someone else's; she couldn't really answer this, could she?

"Um..." Wait, wasn't this sort of an odd question to be asking in the first place? "The whole idea of independence is to be able to figure things out for yourself, right?" She finally gripped the rather worn-looking but still whole curry-pan in both hands. "I... I think it would probably be a good idea to start exploring possible avenues, and see what you, er, enjoy. Or what you have a talent for." The words felt a bit strange coming from her, but it seemed like sensible if somewhat trite advice, anyway.

Now Kozue paid attention to her curry bread, lifting it upwards to look at. "Ah, but doesn't that mean I should have a talent, first?"

"Well, senpai, I really should get back to it. Enjoy your... what did I get, again? I'm not really in the mood for it, I don't think. Here, do you want mine?" And she extended her pan-full hand.

"I'm certain there's something." Renju ignored the proffered pan, bothered more than she ought to be by that first bit. She'd never heard Kozue be quite so self-deprecating before, and it seemed a bit at odds with her usual demeanor--more so than she'd probably let slip to someone like Renju.

"Dealing with people is a talent in itself," she added, not adding with it that most of the people who had it took it for granted more than they really ought to. She wasn't exactly bitter, but it was much clearer from the perspective of someone who lacked it, now that she was paying attention.

Kozue smiled: "Well, in that case, someone will want it. Later, Sonozaki! Enjoy your whatever pan." And there she went, from self-deprecation to flippant in .05 seconds, roller coaster of demeanor. She waved, and ... really, fairly booked it out of the shop.
