Entry tags:kanaye, maeko

Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Catching up
Where: A wall near a pedestrian crossing near Kanaye's house.
When: post-plot
Why: ???

Maeko was waiting. It wasn't really Kanaye's fault she was waiting. He was likely busy right now and she had just decided on the spot that since she was done with work and Seiko was busy teaching Toru ballet or something she would send him a text message on the chance that he was free.

Hey, probably need to talk. Want to meet up? Am near the crossing near your house.

She checked her phone again despite it only being about 20 seconds since she sent the message, halfway through a convenience store anpan as she sat on the wall waiting.  She was very easily within walking distance of his house but no way was she going there again right now.

She gets a reply as soon as she checks the phone.

Of course, Maeko.

A couple of minutes later, Kanaye walked down the street. He saw Maeko and hugged her, pulled back and sitting down on the wall beside her. "Hello, Maeko. What should we talk about?" He smiled genuinely.

That had been...she wanted to think it was an unexpectedly fast response but it was pretty standard Kanaye-behavior really.

"Um, a lot." She said, kicking her feet as she tried to figure out where to start. The angels were likely to be a touchy subject. but they were also one that was difficult to avoid. Going back to Renju's place? Likely also a touchy subject. Had anything happenned that she didn't have a history of using, deliberately or not, to reduce her boyfriend to a blubbering mess?

Awkward situations like this were, she supposed, an occupational hazard of being Akuba Maeko. "Sonozaki-san's lost Promethius. I guess that's the first thing. I think she's otherwise fine but..."

She trailed off. Best not to mention the 'without the witch' feeling of being in one's own dungeon. Especially since she had to bring all that up after.

Kanaye looked at her weirdly. "She did? Why? That's...worrying. If she can lose it, who's saying we can't?" He said, sounding confused more then worried. "If we all lose our personae we can't fight. Then we couldn't save anyone. That'd be horrible..."

"I-I don't think that's a problem. She chose to give him away in the end. And the situation was kind of specific..." This was as good a way to ease into the conversation as any. "...we found one of the angels, see."

Kanaye twitched a bit, but took a deep breath and looked troubled. "Why did she choose to give him away? And who was the angel? How'd you find them?" He asked, his voice monotone. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?"

Had she actually managed it? Had she made Kanaye mad at her? She tried very had not to feel like this was an achievement because having one's boyfriend mad at you was rarely actually a desirable thing but the fact that she'd actually managed it still filled her with the confidence to press on through the difficult topic.

"Well, because it didn't happen until yesterday and after all that I was kind of busy sleeping." She said, shrugging as if it was something perfectly natural. "And you've been busy, I didn't want to bother you too much in case you got in trouble over it."

She continued, not making eye contact so that she could convince herself he was still mad.

"She traded him for information, sort of. He came to us. Kind of. I think. He wrote something that might have been a message asking us for help. He was the one who they said was missing back then. He's...you know that skinny dark-haired first year? The one that's not Ishinomori-san? Mikio Seiji?"

"I don't know most of it, I think he wanted to tell Sonozaki-san. I think it's mostly what he knows about the other angels and how Paradise works."

She sighed. "I think that's everything that happenned yesterday."

"Alright then."

Suddenly, Kanaye smiled at Maeko. "Well, since we're here, do you want to go to lunch or something? Can I take you out to dinner, maybe? Somewhere fancy, if you want? I just want to get out of the house, really." He grinned. "No use in worrying about it!"

Well, if he had been mad he wasn't anymore. That was kind of disappointing.

"I already ate." Maeko said, holding up the empty anpan packet. It may have been a preemptive move to avoid being taken to eat, she was still struggling with the idea of things like that. She sighed, thinking. "Do you have the rest of the afternoon? We could see when train times are and go to the zoo. I went there was Seiko-chan a while ago, it was really great"

Kanaye smiled. "That's good!" It's nice you have Seiko to talk to. Shall we go right now, or do you have stuff to get?"

"Now's fine. I don't have any errands today." Maeko said, smiling. It really was a rarity to have time that she wasn't using for anything else. She paused, trying to get her bearings, she wasn't as used to this part of the city as she was to the rest of it. "The station's this way, right?" She asked after a few seconds, pointing.

Kanaye nodded. "Yep, Maeko. Let's go." He said, turning and walking, offering his hand. "What's your favorite animal? And least favorite?" He asked, curious.

He was offering the hand instead of grabbing her. That was good! Maeko took the hand, swinging her arm and smiling.

She thought. "Frogs, I guess. They're all cute and jumping. And, um, I guess I don't like birds anymore."

Kanaye smiled. This was good! "I love frogs too. My favorite is probably a chinchilla or something. So adorable..." He smiled. "I don't like birds much, either! Like, hawks are ok, but songbirds...no."

"Chinchillas? Aren't they those...fluffy...potato...things? With the ears?" Maeko asked, displaying her knowledge of animals that weren't frogs.

"I'm just not really too fond of any of them anymore. I used to think they were really pretty but...yeah."

"Bunnies do make this worthwhile, almost." He agreed, nodding. He looked at her, confused, but nodding again. "You'd probably be a good teacher. Why, is that what you're planning to be? I like that idea, you'd be good at it."

Maeko sighed, dusting herself off. "Sort of. I think."

She paused, trying to gather words together before using them. "I read the stupid book and I don't even think it meant anything. But there was this one story about a man who only knew a bunch of stupid languages and it seemed kind of familiar."

She crouched again, turning her attention to the rabbits. "So I figured I'd try just using the stupid language that I know. I don't want to be just a translator but-" She fidgetted uncomfortably again - figuring stuff like this out and having a real direction was forcing parts of her mind that were long out of use into action and the whole thing was fairly uncomfortable. But worth it, she convinced herself. If she could say she was going to do this that she'd have no choice but to do it and that meant she'd get it done. And then maybe she could stop being angry and replace the witch with that calm.

"There's a lot of kids who are in the safe situation as I was in. And the same situation my dad was in. They're expected to learn to lipread and just keep up with everyone else and- and-. And I want to teach. In sign. So they get a fair chance."

She almost sounded confident for a second toward the end of that.

Kanaye listened intently, then walked over and pecked her on the lips. "That's a wonderful idea, Maeko. I have to admit, that idea has a lot of merit. You can use something you know and help a lot of people. I think you'd do well at it." HE said with a smile.

There, confirmation that it wasn't a terrible idea! Next step - confirmation that it wasn't a terrible idea from someone who wouldn't just agree with whatever she said.

Still, it was something. She'd managed to make a plan. A plan that wasn't along the lines of 'stand between [person] and danger until it gets me killed' or 'call [person with a name beginning with 't' and ending in 'om'] stupid until they stop being stupid'. She allowed herself to feel, for once, that she'd won.

She kissed Kanaye on the cheek quickly before remembering 'oh right, in public' and just laughing instead. She kind of liked winning, she reminded herself that she should do it more often.

"C'mon, there's a crocodile over this way I think! And crocodiles are kind of like frogs, they're green and like water and stuff" She said, grinning and squeezing Kanaye's hand before pulling him along.

He laughed. "Alright, Maeko. Crocodiles are pretty awesome, I have to admit." Kanaye said, laughing. "Is there any plan you want? Or just wander around and look at cute things? Cause I like either of those."

Maeko was, apparently, energetic when victorious. She pulled Kanaye along through the crowds, almost certain he wouldn't have difficulty keeping up - for all her newfound enthuseasm she still wasn't particularly quick, until she had found the crocodile in question.

"Oh, it's not really green at all. It's kind of brownish." She said, frowning for a second. "Dumb brownish crocodile. Oh well, it's still cool!"

She finally answered Kanaye's question after apparently staring at the crocodile's teeth for a while. "I didn't really have a plan. Is there anything you want to see?"

"Sort of a greenish-brown." He said, attempting to appease her. "It is indeed very cool."

Kanaye was about to shake his head, but stopped and nodded. "Do they have a rodent exhibit? I have never been here..."

"I'm not sure...we didn't see the whole place when I visited with Seiko-chan." Maeko looked around. "I think there should be one of those big maps around here somewhere..." She said, suddenly trailing off to point at one as she noticed it. "-there! You could see if it mentions rodents anywhere!"

Kanaye smiled and walked over, looking at it closely. "Yeah, but it's on the other side of the park for some reason. Is that a problem?" He asked, turning.
