Entry tags:kanaye, maeko

Who: Maeko, Kanaye
What: Catching up
Where: A wall near a pedestrian crossing near Kanaye's house.
When: post-plot
Why: ???

Maeko was waiting. It wasn't really Kanaye's fault she was waiting. He was likely busy right now and she had just decided on the spot that since she was done with work and Seiko was busy teaching Toru ballet or something she would send him a text message on the chance that he was free.

Hey, probably need to talk. Want to meet up? Am near the crossing near your house.

She checked her phone again despite it only being about 20 seconds since she sent the message, halfway through a convenience store anpan as she sat on the wall waiting.  She was very easily within walking distance of his house but no way was she going there again right now.

Maeko sighed, dusting herself off. "Sort of. I think."

She paused, trying to gather words together before using them. "I read the stupid book and I don't even think it meant anything. But there was this one story about a man who only knew a bunch of stupid languages and it seemed kind of familiar."

She crouched again, turning her attention to the rabbits. "So I figured I'd try just using the stupid language that I know. I don't want to be just a translator but-" She fidgetted uncomfortably again - figuring stuff like this out and having a real direction was forcing parts of her mind that were long out of use into action and the whole thing was fairly uncomfortable. But worth it, she convinced herself. If she could say she was going to do this that she'd have no choice but to do it and that meant she'd get it done. And then maybe she could stop being angry and replace the witch with that calm.

"There's a lot of kids who are in the safe situation as I was in. And the same situation my dad was in. They're expected to learn to lipread and just keep up with everyone else and- and-. And I want to teach. In sign. So they get a fair chance."

She almost sounded confident for a second toward the end of that.

Kanaye listened intently, then walked over and pecked her on the lips. "That's a wonderful idea, Maeko. I have to admit, that idea has a lot of merit. You can use something you know and help a lot of people. I think you'd do well at it." HE said with a smile.

There, confirmation that it wasn't a terrible idea! Next step - confirmation that it wasn't a terrible idea from someone who wouldn't just agree with whatever she said.

Still, it was something. She'd managed to make a plan. A plan that wasn't along the lines of 'stand between [person] and danger until it gets me killed' or 'call [person with a name beginning with 't' and ending in 'om'] stupid until they stop being stupid'. She allowed herself to feel, for once, that she'd won.

She kissed Kanaye on the cheek quickly before remembering 'oh right, in public' and just laughing instead. She kind of liked winning, she reminded herself that she should do it more often.

"C'mon, there's a crocodile over this way I think! And crocodiles are kind of like frogs, they're green and like water and stuff" She said, grinning and squeezing Kanaye's hand before pulling him along.

He laughed. "Alright, Maeko. Crocodiles are pretty awesome, I have to admit." Kanaye said, laughing. "Is there any plan you want? Or just wander around and look at cute things? Cause I like either of those."

Maeko was, apparently, energetic when victorious. She pulled Kanaye along through the crowds, almost certain he wouldn't have difficulty keeping up - for all her newfound enthuseasm she still wasn't particularly quick, until she had found the crocodile in question.

"Oh, it's not really green at all. It's kind of brownish." She said, frowning for a second. "Dumb brownish crocodile. Oh well, it's still cool!"

She finally answered Kanaye's question after apparently staring at the crocodile's teeth for a while. "I didn't really have a plan. Is there anything you want to see?"

"Sort of a greenish-brown." He said, attempting to appease her. "It is indeed very cool."

Kanaye was about to shake his head, but stopped and nodded. "Do they have a rodent exhibit? I have never been here..."

"I'm not sure...we didn't see the whole place when I visited with Seiko-chan." Maeko looked around. "I think there should be one of those big maps around here somewhere..." She said, suddenly trailing off to point at one as she noticed it. "-there! You could see if it mentions rodents anywhere!"

Kanaye smiled and walked over, looking at it closely. "Yeah, but it's on the other side of the park for some reason. Is that a problem?" He asked, turning.
