wading in the low end of the diligence pool...
Who: Kozue, Kiriko, and Kouchisei! (K's UNITE. What.)
When: Saturday after school, during Club/Practice time
Where: Near the Tennis Courts - a water fountain.
What: Kozue is "practicing tennis". Really. Breaks are part of practice too.
Why: For the pure joy of random social interaction.

Kozue constantly thanked her lucky stars that the water fountain was just out of view of the tennis courts. Truly, just barely; she could see a corner of the green surface, but no players, no captains, and no gym teacher. And more importantly, they couldn't see her. So she could take her sweet time in having a drink, and getting her breath back. And then having another drink from the water fountain. Maybe thinking about doing her hair, or putting on a little makeup. Surely, the Gym Teacher wouldn't notice, right...?

She was leaning up against the water fountain, and even if her hair was a bit mussed (and in that icky ponytail that the captain insisted she wear), she looked good, and she knew it, too. Even if she hadn't joined the tennis club for the express purpose of the uniforms, well, that was about seventy-five percent of the reason she was staying there. I look good in white. And mini-skirts. She grinned a little, privately, and raised her wrist to check her watch. If she stayed here for oh, say, five more minutes, she could go back and only have to do two more drills - maybe three - before the bell rang and they were dismissed. It was an excellent plan. Then, she could go back to the dorm, take out the stupid ponytail, shower, and go out with her date -- and that was a better plan still.

Feeling proud of herself, she leaned down to take another sip of water from the fountain.

"Hey, Kondo-san."

Even if Kiriko had known that the curly-haired girl had been attempting to hide when she'd seen her slip away to one of the more reclusive water fountains, she probably wouldn't have approached any differently; the players on the court right now were doing a terrible job anyway, so why not cut across? The tall girl ignored the players' death glares as she approached the water fountain, waving once she saw the other girl come into view. Tucked beneath Kiriko's arm was a red folder, the kind with coloured tabs sticking out the end to give the impression of organization - though Kiriko was one of those types who actually used them.

"If I schedule a flower arranging club meeting for next week before the class trip, can you make it?" she asked once she cleared the courts and was near enough to the water fountain. The fact that that Kozue was busy taking a drink didn't seem to phase the tall girl. Before she continued, she frowned slightly. "Everyone is slacking off, we haven't had a meeting in ages - but, I guess people have been pretty busy."

"Oh, Ikeda-san, good afternoon," Kozue said, lifting her head up from the fountain, and using the back of her hand to wipe off just a little bit of excess water from her lower lip. It took her a moment to process the question, though mostly because she was wondering what exactly would bring Kiriko out onto the athletic fields. Surely not just to track her down and ask her about Flower Arranging Club - and what was that folder for? It made her look like a teacher or something.

But Kozue quickly directed her eyes upwards from the folder (it was impolite to stare at other people's things, after all) and to Kiriko's face. Which was definitely a bit of a journey upwards - her classmate was tall, and Kozue was... not. She thought for a moment, and then smiled slightly - it was a very practiced, polite smile, and it just barely didn't reach her eyes.

"If it's on Wednesday, I'll make sure to be there," she said, and paused, before continuing just a little more carefully. "I will see if I can excuse myself from Saturday Tennis practice, if that day works better for everyone else; I'm sure I can be spared for one day." Or many days; she was hardly the shining star of the team. Or even a mildly tarnished star - she ranked somewhere around "space dust" in the celestial hierarchy of tennis.

She was rather preoccupied with Kozue's hair as the smaller girl lifted her head up and stood straight before her, but tried not to look as though she was staring. It was impressive, in Kiriko's opinion - whoever did the dye job made it look so natural; she'd once considered asking where she'd got it done. But, keeping the curls in must be such hard work... She supposed Kozue must be pretty industrious when it came to appearance.

Kiriko returned her smile with one of her own. The expression did not linger - within moments she had flipped open the folder under her arm, clicked the pen wedged between the pages into life and scribbled something down. When she shut it again and tucked it back under her arm, she looked back to Kozue, canting her head.

"Is tennis practice where you always go when you can't make it?"

Enthusiasm for taking part in sport was pointless, Kouchisei thought. He was carrying a basket with packets of tennis balls. Many of the students hadn't a chance of playing professionally, and those who did had been snapped up by team-sponsored programmes.

He walked round the corner, a scowl on his face. He wouldn't even be here if their teacher hadn't roped him into helping out.

... And collided with something. He stumbled back, dropping his basket as he felt his heart beating rapidly. His glasses had slipped down his nose. They hung off till he pushed them up and looked at who it was that had gotten in his way.

"Sorry..."

Kiriko stumbled forward, but managed to stop herself before she fell onto Kozue (good thing, she observed, she's so tiny I'd crush her!). The folder she'd been carrying dropped and fell open at her feet to the page she'd previously been writing on. It didn't look like much - a schedule planner, a page of notes, both filled to the margins with writing. However, the panicked way she scooped it up and snapped it shut before even bothering to turn 'round and see who had bumped her was telling. There was something secret in there.

She rounded on whoever had knocked into her, glaring.

"If you'd watch where you're going, you wouldn't have to apologi--"

What was Kou doing here? She had expected to see some stupid tennis player. Kou did not seem like a tennis sort of person.

"Oubai-san? What are you doing here?"

Kouchisei drew the basket close to his chest. He had winced at the tone used, but upon recognising it as Kiriko's voice his mind sighed with relief. At least it wasn't somebody he would have trouble with. His arms lowered the basket and he looked away apologetically.

"Sensei talked me into helping out. I don't do sports but..." He shrugged his shoulders; there wasn't any way to get out of it, really. "Are you a tennis player, Kiriko-san?"

"Yes, quite often, especially now that the weather is nice and we can prac--"

She would have continued, but then someone slammed into Kiriko; Kozue jumped a little, shocked. She caught sight of the telltale bright yellow of a basket of tennis balls, but it was the brightest thing moving, so her eyes focused on that. With a gasp, as the two people righted themselves, Kozue dropped to a kneeling position to try and help Kiriko with her folder. But the other girl was way faster - were notes on flower arranging really that secretive?

(Actually, judging by the way that Kozue's grandmother treated the "special family arrangement methods", just maybe. And Kozue knew that Kiriko came from a prestigious family - maybe they were equally traditional?)

So she switched to grabbing a few of the tennis ball packets that had fallen out and rolled her way. "... Are you both okay?" She asked, looking upwards at the pair. Did they know each other? It seemed like it, from the way Kiriko had reacted - and he used her first name, too!

Kiriko righted her hair, throwing it back out over her shoulders before nodding to Kozue. Priorities, priorities... She took a step back so that she could face both of them at once and include Kou more easily into the discussion.

"No, Kondo-san is the athlete, I just came here to talk to her."

Kiriko looked past Kou to the fraction of the playing field visible from their perspective. No one was in it, as far as she could tell. Her eyes slid back to Kou.

"Why not just stay out of sight for a while if you don't want to do it?"

Kou shook his head, moving the basket in his arms to shift its weight. It was so heavy! He rested the basket on the floor so he could talk without worrying and complaining.

"I don't mind helping. It's important after... well, you know." He believed Kiriko would understand, and left room for Kondo to talk.

"Well, thank you for your hard work... Oubai-san?" She rose again, brushing off some mostly imagined dirt from her white uniform. The name sounded right - had the coach announced he'd be helping, earlier? Or maybe she just knew him from somewhere else. "If you weren't helping, they'd just get some of the first years to carry and chase the stray balls - so we're very grateful."

As far as staying out of sight went, well. How did Kiriko know? Or - no - wait, she was talking to Oubai! Oh. "And - here -" she passed over the canisters she'd scooped up. "I'm Kondo Kozue, by the way. First Year."

The whole well, you know thing almost went over her head; what in the world was he talking about?

"... You're a first year?"

Kouchisei had a confused expression; she looked older than that. Teenage girls these days wore too much make-up. It detracted from their natural beauty and he found it quite vulgar. A little bit was fine, but when they looked five years older and legally... it was fraudulant!

Except she was pretty, so that made it a bit better.

"Uh, it's no trouble," he said, taking the canisters.

"Oh, yes, I am," Kozue affirmed, though she sounded a bit unsure of why she had to affirm it in the first place. Was there something about her that didn't seem like a first year? Well, it couldn't be her height; there were some middle schoolers taller than her. His apparent confusion had knocked her a little off balance, mentally speaking, as she tried to account for what might have caused it. But - oh well - forge onwards. Make polite conversation.

"So, should I be calling you Oubai-senpai? Or just Oubai-san?"

Kouchisei tipped his head on his right. His eyebrows knotted in confusion. Most people in Kozue's year who didn't know him knew to use the former honorific. Did she really not know?

"Come on. Oubai-senpai is fine."

Kou was acting a little strangely. Kiriko was starting to wonder if he really didn't know Kozue - sure, he wasn't leering or anything, but Kozue was fairly popular and undeniably pretty. Maybe that was the real reason he was doing grunt work for the tennis team. She really couldn't imagine anyone willfully accepting such a thankless task.

"Oubai-san," Kiriko interrupted in a voice decidedly more inquisitive, pleasant, and therefore suspicious than was usual. "Have you ever thought of joining the Flower Arranging club? We're still looking for new members."

She looked to Kozue with a small smirk tugging at her lips.
"You could get to know Kondo-san better if you came."

Kouchisei was staying silent. He had offered his help this week to get the counseler off his back, but he wouldn't admit it was also to see Kozue. Opening his mouth he faltered. What if he said yes? His chest rose and fell. He quickly looked down at the floor. The words wouldn't come out his mouth, so he stared at Kiriko and talked with a deadpan tone.

"... You're bizarre," he told her.

As she balled a hand into a fist and planted it on her hip, Kiriko's smirk only grew, this time with a definite undertone of "aha-I-see-how-it-is". Should she be teasing Kou relentlessly or trying to help him out? Maybe a bit of both?

"Well, it's like I said, we're really hurting for members. You seem like you'd have the patience for that kind of thing."

Rather than giggling and jabbing an elbow into his side, she decided to just play it cool. She wasn't sure he'd want to say yes - there weren't a lot of guys in flower arranging club and if her suspicions were correct he might be too shy to come anyway - but if he did, well, it was true that they needed more members. Hopefully she hadn't already been so obvious that Kozue knew what was going on.

"So, would you consider it? I'd really appreciate it."

Kozue certainly didn't show any indication of understanding some of the undercurrents in the conversation; she smiled, and looked between the other two people standing with her at the water fountain, before turning back to Kou. That he was looking down at the floor didn't really faze her - boys did that often enough, and Kozue could recognize it for what it was. He was attracted to her. But she wasn't going to acknowledge it: it would embarrass him, and Kiriko, and maybe even herself, and it'd be shameful to bring something like that up in a first conversation. Instead, she could talk about flowers - what a useful euphemism.

"Have you tried it? Flower arranging, I mean - I've always found it to be very satisfying. And we are -" She stopped, and looked to Kiriko. "Are we meeting Wednesday or Saturday, or is it still up in the air?"

Suddenly, Flower Arranging Club was starting to seem more interesting. Boys (or even a boy who found her attractive) weren't her sole reason for doing things, or joining clubs, but they were a great perk, and a wonderful amusement. And if she had a date tonight? Well, if the past was any indication, this boyfriend wouldn't last all that long. She had to look out for her future, right?

Being smiled at - and surrounded - by two women was leaving Kouchisei in a nervous state; he folded his arms and looked around. Nobody was coming. He didn't really talk to people, less so females. He was attracted to her beauty, but appearance alone wasn't enough to cover the distance he maintained. Interpreting Kozue's version of 'flower arranging' for exactly what it was, Ikebana, he shook his head.

"Hmm? Do I look like a girl?"

He lowered, and picked up the basket. "Sorry, but father wants me home after school." He didn't say helping out was the least he could do. They didn't need to know how he felt about home.

Kozue just smiled - the kind of subtle, but warm smile accompanied by closed eyes and a downwards tilt of her chin, and where she looked really quite sweet and dignified - and shook her head a little, back and forth. No, of course he didn't look like a girl, was the message.

"Of course. Family obligations are important."

Kou nodded. It was refreshing to see a person who understood the importance of family loyalty; Kiriko was too much of a stranger for him to understand her thoughts on this matter. He pursed his lips. But would she understand the doubts he had about going back into that world? Not only was he escaping from his problems at home, he was terrified of what could happen.

He'd been driven by bravado, perhaps something else created by that place.

"Perhaps later?" he offered.

Kiriko frowned at the two of them. Family obligations? She knew how Kou felt, guilty over letting the family down, but apparently being the odd one out in her feelings about filial loyalty was making her feel almost attacked and subsequently quite annoyed. Of course, that was ridiculous - she demanded of herself that she not let it get to her, and while it was ridiculous to feel they had somehow passed judgement on feelings she'd kept mostly private, it was still difficult to feel any other way.

She looked to Kou.
"I'll hold you to that, senpai."

Kozue nodded, and peered down at her watch. It had definitely been enough time that she'd missed the worst drills - and if she stayed much longer, the coach might miss her. So, it was about time to go back to practice, even though her actual desire to do so was so tiny it practically didn't exist - and even if she'd enjoyed talking to Oubai-senpai and Kiriko a little bit more than she'd imagined that she would.

"I'm sorry, but I must excuse myself," she said, bobbing her head in a short bow, "I need to go back to the tennis court, I've taken long enough for my water break. If I don't hurry, I'll miss the rest of practice."

With Kozue excusing herself, it made Kouchisei think he needed to get a move on. Kiriko's silence hadn't gone unnoticed; he didn't know enough to ask and thought it would be impolite to do so. Plus he needed to go home.

"I suppose I should be going as well." He nodded at the two girls. "Kiriko-san. Kozue-san. Excuse me."

With that, he carried the basket down the hall.
