[Noticeboard]
[ First day of school: The noticeboard in the hallway has had a large and rather out-of-the-ordinary sign taped to it. It reads:]

On her way upstairs from the shoe lockers, Kozue paused and stared, her eye caught almost immediately by the shiny, out of place sign. She stopped, and stared and, after a moment, reached down to read the "Rules". Morbid, irresistible curiosity drove her to find out.

After a few minutes of perusing, she shrugged and moved on, determining that she'd show up to watch some of the shows or... whatever they were planning to do. It would probably be cute, right?

at lunch:

The poster and signup sheet had attracted crowds all day—one of those crowds was a group of four First Year girls, about half from Class B and half from Class A. Among them, Kozue stood out, but only as much as she ever did in any crowd. The miniscule, blonde<, and giant hair thing always made her easy to spot.

"Come on, let's all sign up," one said, grabbing the pen. "I mean, it's not nearly as bad if we're all doing it, right? It'll be fun." The words most stressed were punctuated by snaps of her chewing gum (contraband, but Hitomi was a professional at sneaking slightly contraband things into school).

"I don't know…" Kozue peered out from between the shoulders of Mariko and Mikiko, her face slightly scrunched.

"Come on," another snap of gum from Hitomi, but the sentiment was echoed by the other two girls; Mikiko turned, speaking up. She and Kozue had been classmates since kindergarten and (as far as Mikiko knew) more-or-less nearly-best-friends for most of that time period, save for a brief interlude when Kozue had accidentally stolen the boy she liked in grade seven. Peace had resumed, until earlier this year, when the tiny, half-American heiress-to-something-or-others had fallen in with what Mikiko considered a truly strange crowd. Well, maybe not Ikeda, Ikeda had been a perfectly normal girl, in fact better than normal, until that kind of psychotic break or whatever the hell had happened in June... but some of the other ones?

"We never do anything together, you're always so busy with your boyfriends," and that was another freakish trend in Kozue's recent social life. Had she really been dating Oubai Kouchisei over the summer? Surely someone had just made that up as a joke. Ito Keiichi alone, though, was enough to make anyone acknowledge that perhaps something bizarre was happening.

"So we've got to do this," Hitomi provided. "And we are not taking no for an answer."

And knowing they would not take a no, Kozue provided nothing of the sort.

After lunch, the signup sheet had four new names on it:
Inoue Hitomi
Maruyama Mikiko
Yamada Mariko
Kondo Kozue

The flashy bulletin caught Noriko's eyes and drew him in like a magnet. This was his new big story. He read over the rules and already-signed names with a wolfish grin, brain formulating and incubating all sorts of headlines and plans.

And of course, it could be such a useful tool for him...

"ALL RIGHT! I'M PUMPED NOW!"

No more than 5 seconds after the shout, the four kanji "溝口士郎" suddenly occupied about four times the space of any other names on the page.

It was difficult to ensure nobody was around but Tamiko had managed it By arriving after staying late after a tea club meeting. She had to ensure it. It wouldn't do, after all, to be seen even considering something so rediculous. Her father would be mortified.

She placed her pen back into her back and backed off, smiling.

If her name was Ishinomori Toru she might have been signed up.

As he passed the sheet, Toru had to do a double-take. He hated idols, yes? And he'd never sign up as one, right? Upon seeing his name on the sheet in suspiciously tidy handwriting, the boy bit his lip and wondered.

Am I hallucinating? Did I do this while under some kind of mind control? Was it my shadow? It didn't seem to matter. He wasn't going to wake up, that seemed certain. So Toru did that most mature thing he could manage.

In the middle of the hallway, he broke down crying in frustration.

Seiko had noticed the sign earlier, and fairly quickly decided this was not something she wanted to participate in. She was no singer, and the only dancing she knew was vaguely wiggling to the music in a club. However she looked again at the sign to see if any of her friends had signed up.

But before she could look at the sign she noticed one of her teammates, one of her teammates who seemed to be...crying? Without a thought Seiko bounced into concerned action.

"Hey Toru-san! Are you alright?" She asked kindly sliding over and putting a hand on his shoulder. Looking up into his face, with a gentle smile, She tried to work out why on Earth the boy was crying.

"Did something happen?"

Toru's pathetic whimpering self-terminated as soon as he felt somebody touch him.

"A-ah! Tank-senpai! E-er, I mean Yukizaki-senpai!" Mortally embarrassed, he tried to hide his splotchy, tear-streaked face. It was bad enough that he was now a "volunteer" for the school's idol competition... but crying in the middle of the hall, and being seen by a teammate in such a state? This would be the time to drop dead... but he rather quickly concluded that the Grim Reaper was nowhere near. Seiko would have to do for now.

"...I-I-I-I... somebodyputmynameontheidolsignupsbutitwasn'tmeandIdon'twannabutIcan'tbackoutnow!" The incoherent babble was punctuated with a loud sob, and a swipe of a hand against his face to remove the worst of the tears. "...a-a-a-and I don't know who d-did it..."

Seiko smiled a little at 'Tank-senpai', but then returned to a look of kindhearted concern. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a clean tissue and pressed it into Toru's hand wordlessly, hoping to save the boy from too much embarrassment.

Keeping her hand on Toru's shoulder she peered at the board spotting his name. "You can't back out?" she shook her head sympathetically. "Well..."

She looked at the tear stained boy's face there was no way she, Yukizaki Seiko, could ever let someone be that upset over anything without attempting to fix the situation.

"Well, I could help you a bit with the contest?" she offered suddenly. Maybe if he had some support he'd feel better, and maybe she'd be able to help him become happier in himself, and then maybe they'd be friends forever...

"If you have a friend helping will it make you feel better about it?" She asked, bumping her rank up to 'friend of Toru' without a blink.

Teary-eyed and grateful, Toru clutched at the tissue. He wasn't even in a state to recoil from his senpai's touch, and thus dabbed at his eyes until the dampness abated.

"E-er... n-no, I can't quit the competition... s-so..." Face flushed red, Toru felt the tears start to well up again.

"B-but I can't compete! I-I can't get up on stage, in front of the whole school! A-and I can't sing..." He was starting to buckle, to twist inwards, bringing his head down with his hands.

"Help?"

Seiko, being firmly in the camp of people that thought that when someone was upset getting further into their personal space was comforting and always helpful, moved closer to Toru and put her arm round his shoulders.

"Its not as bad as all that." She said soothingly. "Lots of people have signed up I'm sure most people will be at the same level, and everyone will understand that singing isn't what everyone is best at."

She nodded thoughtfully pulling out another tissue and handing it to Toru. "I could...help with clothes, and if you have to sing, or dance I can help with that...And I can encourage you!" She grinned at him. "Will that make it easier at all if I give you a hand?"

By the time Seiko put her arm around Toru, his distress had not subsided quite enough to make him acutely uncomfortable. He was mildly uncomfortable, but was still too upset to tell Seiko to stop touching him or anything.

"B-but... those people signed themselves up... And I'm..." His voice trailed off in a little half-whine, half-sigh. The opportunity was a prime one to apply the tissue to his face again.

Then his eyes went wide, accompanied by a look that was usually reserved for the release of a new Ultimate Sci-Fi. One could almost see the sparkles around him. "C-could you? W-would you? H-helping... me?"

Tears welled up in his eyes once more. This time, at least, they were of gratitude.

"Th-thank you, Yukizaki-senpai!"

Seiko didn't notice Toru was uncomfortable, so kept her arm in place and gave him a wide grin.

"Of course I will help you! We're..." she tilted her head, trying to think of the right word for how she felt for the team. "Well we're almost like family, considering everything." She said gently, looking up at him.

"So its only natural for me to help you however I can." She did consider the team family already, because she knew that if she was taken, they'd all come in after her. It was enough to make her want to look out for each any every one of them, even if they weren't that close.

Masami passed by the sign later on in the day. She'd noticed the sign earlier but hadn't really paid it much mind. However, this time she also spotted Shirou's name, written in giant red characters on it, so she felt like she had to stop and take a look.

A few moments later, she walked away without signing. It would be fun to watch, but she wasn't sure she really wanted to actually be on the stage...

Some time later, a few of Masami's teammates passed by the sign on the way to Kendo club.

"Hey, it looks like Shirou's name is up there," Tousaka Youko of class 3-C pointed out.

"Did you expect anything else from him, Youko?" asked Ueno Hitomi, also of 3-C(and the kendo team's captain), "...I'm honestly surprised his name doesn't take up more of the page than it already does." The two third years shared a knowing look and sighed almost collectively.

"Senpai... I just got a great idea," piped in the team's slow-starting first year, Kuwahara Natsuko of class 1-A, getting the attention of the two third years. "What if we signed Masami-senpai up?"

"She won't be happy," Hitomi said flatly.

"But whenever we go out to karaoke together she's always great!" shot back Natsuko.

"Knowing her, she'll probably just sigh and sip her tea when she finds out. And maybe during nationals we can put her into MDK Mode by reminding her of it!" added Youko with a michievous gleam in her eyes, referring to what the team liked to call Masami's occasional outburst of aggression when she was losing in a kendo match (MDK, of course, stood for Murder Death Kill).

"Oh not you too Youko. Besides, do you really think she needs any help winning? She already has a perfect record..." Hitomi tried to speak up, but Youko was already writing down Masami's name, so she just shook her head and walked off.

From the moment he'd arrived, Kouchisei had been unnerved - not of himself because he was satisfied that he was well, but that voices were constantly whispering, to the extent he misheard their words to be about himself. People had to find entertainment in something, so it was natural he kept himself out of the flow of traffic and walked alongside the wall, stopped only when he heard a name that made him realise it wasn't about him at all.

It was someone he knew. He turned, and glared before he was ready to speak. More people walked past. A few stared at them. He shifted slightly, uncomfortable but not afraid of talking. He made himself relax, not wanting to show his anger the way he had at the beach, and then walked over.

"She'll know all about it if you stand here talking about it," he commented, and lifted his arms as if trying to move them on. He was looking around, as if hoping nobody else would see him act like this.

Hitomi had just started to walk away when Kou approached the group and spoke up. "Well, I can't stop Youko and Natsuko when they get like this," she admitted with a resigned shrug of her shoulders. "You're... Oubai-san, right? Masami's classmate?" She spared a glance back at her two teammates, who were ignoring both Kou and herself and chatting excitedly about how cool it would be if Masami managed to win the contest.

"You're welcome to try to talk to them... but I don't think it'd do much good. Not when they're as excited as they are. Sorry to be brief, but I have to go. The team needs the captain to be on time at least," she added with a quick courtesy bow before she turned and stalked off in the direction of the gym.

Kouchisei watched the girl leave, shrugged, and walked in the opposite direction. He did not enjoy talking to strangers. He would be expected to deal with them later in life, but this was his time. He wanted to enjoy it, but now that others were involved it was difficult to make time.

It was a shame.

When nobody was looking, or perhaps when too many people were looking, a green gel pen swooped across the signup sheet and left a nigh-illegible "Yoshida Kouki" in its wake. Through the crowd a second later ran some small, squirrel-like being carrying a pen.

Kouki was pumped now. And he would bet anything that Kai would want in on this, too.

Kai hadn't even had the time to notice the board until the end of the day. He'd been wrapped up in getting accquainted with the (semi-) new school, but now that classes were over and a giant sparkling board had caught his eye, it was all he could focus on.

Scanning the names idly, he spotted what looked like "Yoshida Kouki" (the gel pen was not helping the legibility any), and his first reaction was to gape slightly.

Then he chuckled to himself and kept walking. This was going to be fun. He would have to text Kouki about it when he got a moment.

Kajiko had a grand scheme. Well, maybe not nearly as grand as some of her other grand schemes, but it would still be a highly rewarding one nonetheless. Having seen the poster advertising Nanakamado Idol earlier, she had decided that secretly signing Gendou up would be immensely amusing, and so she waited in the tea club's room after it finished for at least a good half hour.

When she finally stepped out into the halls, they were as empty as she expected. Still, she checked around just to make sure nobody was around at all before quickly writing Gendou's name on the list. Without another moment's hesitation, she left the school for the day.

She could hardly wait to see the student council president's face when he learned he had been signed up.

Yoshimi wandered over to the sign after her last class, drawn mostly by the fact that it was bright and eye-catching and possibly covered in sequins. This, she was convinced, was exactly the sort of memorable high school adventure that it'd be a shame to miss out on – even if she had no idea what that competition actually entailed. Grinning, she signed her name before taking a rulebook that would probably end up laying forgotten at the bottom of her school bag.
