Oubai, Kouchisei ([info]daioujou) wrote in [info]disappear_rpg,

Photography
Who: Open.
What: Scandal.
When: Pre-dungeon, lunchtime.
Where: The house.
Why: Reizo.

Kouchisei was sitting back in the kitchen and out of the way, but his head kept turning towards noise and movement and laughter. With his rigid posture slumped in the chair and his fingernails rattling the tabletop near a paper, his eyes closed and his vision was swiftly replaced by darkness. Laughter moved behind it and agitated the darkness and his ire every time he began feeling more comfortable. Betrayal had always been painful; people got underneath his skin, and then they left him and destroyed everything behind it.

His frustration was growing every time he heard laughter from nearby, and boiling over for all the other times he was reminding himself he had painfully been made aware he didn't know everything. Fingernails rattled angrier, breathing deepened and exhaled furiously at the newspaper, and Kouchisei was trying to blow it open so hard that it felt painful. It was comedic that somebody had asked him if it was all right. Funnier still that someone cared. Because Kozue had needed money and he had had it.

He wanted to kill her for that. Betrayal was the most hateful, vengeful, spiteful and evil behavior he'd ever seen. He knew the best way to escape this anger he couldn't understand - and any embarrassment - was by phoning (no, begging) home for a plane ticket. However, his impression of this immoral, adulterous, vengeful woman was that she lacked the emotional capacity to understand trust and feelings. He was looked down upon by that behaviour, so he would make it clear he was looking down on her.

He went into the lounge, and saw Kozue sitting with the others who were holding an audience. Well, that was lucky. He could break positive opinions towards her, apply moral pressure, humiliate, and even threaten suicide if it would make her guilty. He tore up several of the photos and scattered them on the table. He threw the rest afterwards.

"I didn't know you were a whore," he said loudly.

He then turned around and stormed out.

Kozue had been in the middle of telling a joke, something about a cat and her brother and a tree, when Kou stormed into the room. She had glanced up, opened her mouth to say something when she saw how furious Kou looked, and been cut off without a single word escaping her mouth.

Whore?

Her stomach dropped, in shock and embarrassment and horror, for everyone else in the room had heard it too, and she bolted up to her feet as Kou turned and stormed out of the room. "Oubai-senpai, wait, what—what—" What the hell?!

She grasped at the pieces of what looked like photo paper, now scattered on the table, and picked one up to see herself, in the pretty dress with the sunglasses perched in her hair, walking down a street in Iburi, with Reizo's arm resting comfortably around her shoulders. When had someone taken pictures of... She dropped it, mouth making a mute, surprised 'O' shape, and selected another one.

This one had been torn neatly in half, but showed that same dress, on a carpeted floor, and Kozue gaped. That hadn't even happened. Had it?

Tom hadn't heard much of the situation, he was passing through the house, looking for food to give Max when he saw Kou, and Kozue, and the others. Before Tom had joined the group, he would have continued on, he was aloof, alone, and neutral. Had he gotten involved, he would have investigated to see who was the most deserving of blame.

But suddenly he felt himself filled with anger. He remember the time in Keiichi's dungeon, when Kou told Kozue she had looked better. that she some how needed to change, and he couldn't accept who she was, because who she was, was special. She was his friend, and Kou, who hadn't cared about her in Keiichi's dungeon, who couldn't accept who she was, now had the audacity to insult her.

Without realizing how he'd moved, Tom stood between Kou and Kozue, fists clenched, and a scowl on his face. Max was at Tom's heels tail down, looking between the two men.

"You don't get to talk to her that way."

Or not. The girl who'd bolted up to her feet, looking more than what he thought was a tiny bit guilty, had stopped Kouchisei by the door. He hadn't even needed to be touched. He glanced at her over his shoulder, and returned all his energy to facing the door rather than be sick.

Then somebody entirely unrelated to the situation had the audacity to call foul. No research. No understanding.

About to say something, he stopped. A finger was pressing on his forehead. He didn't want to lose what was left of his dignity, after all.

Kiriko had been in the party of the entertained, listening attentively to hear what became of Kozue's brother, the cat, and the tree, when Kou burst in. Her reaction was somewhat delayed as she sat and tried to puzzle out what had just happened - Kozue hadn't been to his room since earlier, after all, so they couldn't have been fighting. She got to her feet after Kozue, murmuring to her friend not to mind him, then stopping to look over her shoulder at what was spread out on the table.

Photos. She leaned closer. Photos of Kozue? And Reizo. And Kozue's dress on the floor, and Reizo's arm around her shoulders, and the two of them laughing, leaning in for a kiss, passing by what looked like a love hotel. Her mouth was as round as Kozue's and she snatched up the picture she'd just dropped, looking closer for some evidence of fakery, superimposition, anything.

Finding none, she snapped her head up and looked around. The little snake couldn't be far.

Seiko, who had been curled up on the sofa listening to Kozue at the point when Kouchisei had stormed in, stared in amazement at the situation. However within a second of seeing her friend's face drop into a surprised look she had bounced up off the sofa to Kozue's side of the room where the girl stood, to look over her shoulder at the pieces of paper that had been thrown, and picking one up to stare at it after Kiriko had looked at them.

She blinked a few times, photos of...? She frowned confused, why would Kozue-chan have been out with Shirai-san? But it wasn't the time to ask, instead she settled for moving quietly besides her friend, to be there to support her if needed. After all without knowing the context of the photos she didn't want to jump to conclusions.

The little snake (an inept description of him if there ever was one) was not far away.

It wasn’t long after they’d all settled in the sprawling comforts of the lounge that he opened the front doors and sat himself firmly and definitively in the doorway. The view was nice, the breeze found him regularly, and he could keep an ear on the goings-on in the next room without having to sit awkwardly in a corner. Sitting around the social table and begging for scraps of friendship and acceptance were Ishinomori and Sagaki’s jobs, not his. No, he’d keep his distance, his dangerous and unfriendly air, and he’d listen to them talk and yammer and laugh and hope desperately that one of them spontaneously combusted.

Or he did until he heard the noise drop out of the room and the stuffy silence of shock and confusion replace it. Then he was a shadow in the doorway of the lounge, head cocked curiously to the side and mystified smile cutting across his mouth as he swept his eyes over the room. Sagaki was standing between Oubai and Kondo, the top-heavy blond whose name he couldn’t quite remember was huddled almost protectively close to the smaller girl, and Ikeda was staring at ripped up bits of something murderously.

He crossed the floor with barely a sound, hope mounting in his chest with every step, and when he was finally close enough to confirm that it was the pictures he had to bite his tongue to keep from laughing aloud.

He took a look over Ikeda’s shoulder at the bits she was holding, face carefully set in an expression of amusement that, while incriminating, wouldn’t be nearly as damning as him trying to look innocent. He stepped away from the dark-haired girl, looked through the pictures as best he could, and then left just as plainly as he’d came in.

A moment later he scurried back in, took the picture that was least-shredded, muttered something like “damned useful” and walked back out again.

It seemed a little silly when he ended up sitting on the windowsill in plain sight and watching them, crunching on a candy bar.

She saw his advance from the corner of her eye, head turning to follow him as he approached. He was guilty. Of that she was absolutely and unshakably certain, and the look she gave him said as much. Most of the others would probably be as well, albeit for different reasons, but so far none of them had noticed him slither in.

She stared down hard at the picture in her hand. Her hands were leaving wrinkles from holding it too tightly, but there was nothing else to do with them. In a moment he was looming over her shoulder and she could practically feel the mirth bleeding off of him. She hoped very dearly that he could feel her murderous intent as well.

He walked away and left rage swelling and bubbling and clawing at the inside of her throat. Kiriko kept her mouth shut. Her eye was on Kozue now. Tom and Seiko would handle this with her. She should leave. There was nothing to be said to any of them at the moment. She turned the picture over on the table, stepped away and started towards the hallway, only to see Reizo return and pocket the picture she'd been staring at. The look she gave him was pure venom, but she kept her feet moving. Later. He'd answer for it later.

Maeko had been somewhere on the outer edges of the conversation attempting to remember how to fold a sheet of green craft paper into a frog, close enough to be considered to be listenning to the joke but, having never been oficially invited to the conversation, far enough away that she was sure she wouldn't be bothering them with her presence.

The half-formed frog fell from her hands into her lap at Kou's outburst and then, after a few seconds thoroughly confused half-thoughts, flew from her lap to the floor as she stood up very suddenly.

She wasn't quite sure when Kozue had become hers to protect (and were she calmer she might have considered this an alarming development) but she apparently was. The times before when someone had done something like this she'd either been too distracted by trying to keep calm over something else or simply not present at the time.

Her mind didn't even register the possibility that the squares of paper Kou had left were anything to do with his rage. She was with Tom on the front lines in an instant, managing to remind herself that grabbing Kou's hair was probably a bad idea but still uncomfortably close. Her forehead was only just short of touching the back of his head.

"Yeah, what the hell?" She half-yelled, adding to Tom's statement and apparently adressing Kou's hair.

It took Kozue a moment to notice (she was still scanning the photographs and reacting with a mix of horror and recognition), but when Reizo slunk in, and she caught sight of him out of the corner of her eye, she felt her stomach plummet. She managed not to simply stare at him, slack-jawed and confused, but he was… far too not alarmed not to have some idea what was going on. The gestalt idea of which was slowly assembling in Kozue's mind, and it was not pleasant.

She turned back to look at Kou, and found herself staring at the backs of Tom and Maeko's heads, instead, and Oubai somewhere through the space between them. Seiko was beside her. She had seen Kiriko looking at the pictures (but where was she now? Kozue couldn't find her and that was... where had she gone?) It gave her a strong sense of safety or reassurance or something sort of like that, a capacity for momentary strength, and she managed to find a direct view of the older boy who'd just insulted her. Her... Kozue was fairly sure that boyfriend was an antiquated term at this point.

She took a breath. "Do you want to ask me about this, instead of just calling me dirty names?"

This was nonsense. Kouchisei hadn't gotten wound up by many people before this mess of them had entered his life. It had been a struggle getting to know this many. It had been near-impossible to know them all at the same time. He'd thought he'd found somebody faithful in Kozue. The problem wasn't the act itself, he knew. The issue was that she had broken his trust, and now he was being humiliated publically like he didn't mean anything.

He'd thought ages ago that intimacy made him vomit. Now the thought of it was bone-chilling; he rubbed his arms and went to open the door. The noise it made as it slid open was the most relieving he'd heard - he could get out of what was fast becoming a stifling environment.

The worst part was she'd done him a favour. This had made him realise this relationship had long been a waste of his time.

"No."

He wanted to go to his room and hide, but why? She was guilty. He hadn't gone and committed adultery, fraud, and everything else that came with lying. His gaze moved left to right, but in the middle of the crowd he saw Reizo - and it settled there. His mind was fast-thinking.

"How can you even like him? He has peasant written all over him! And the other day - I can kiss you for no reason whatsoever. What's wrong with that?"

Tom, was... unsure of what to do now. He'd always been so certain when entering a conflict, so now when he'd jumped to Kozue's defense, he... didn't quite know what to do. It wasn't likely that he would have to physically attack Kou. Once Reizo slipped in, Tom began to think about what might have gone down, and immediately switched to detective mode. Though some part of him worried physical violence may still be needed.

Max on the other hand, seemed rather certain. He had taken up position behind Tom and Maeko, but right next to Kozue. He wasn't growling, but his ears were back, and tail was straight out from his body.

Misaki had been sitting near the group reading over the notes she had made, and paused when she heard Kou's voice shout out and looked up. Her eyes glanced over the pictures but she frowned, "Why in the world would you be saying such thinks Oubai-san?! That was really rude and uncalled for!"

She got up and moved closer to Kozue. Just who did he think he was.

Seiko stayed close to Kozue, she raised an eyebrow as Reizo came in, he didn't seem surprised, but she hardly knew him, she couldn't make any judgment on what had happened. Maybe he was a victim in this too. But...she looked over at Kozue who had been so surprised by this so horrified, surely that was the normal response to this situation...

She murmured reassuringly to Kozue moving a little closer, her eyes flicking between Oubai and Kozue with a highly worried expression. Oubai was clearly very upset, and whilst she didn't want him to feel hurt, his insulting the younger girl kept her from offering some comfort or a kind word in his direction. Maybe later after being certain Kozue was fine, she'd try to talk to him, try to help.

"The other--"

Kozue's fists clenched at her sides, and she stared only harder at Kou, now standing in front of the open door. "What's wrong with that?" He actually had the nerve to bring it up in the same breath as accusing her of running around behind his back, and with Reizo, of all people? "What's wrong with that?" Her voice shook just slightly with the emphasis, and with what was slowly settling into anger.

At least enough anger to let her talk at greater length, less shocked now—which she did, her voice moving from venom to uncertainty and back, as she went. "Every single thing you've said since you walked in here has been complete… complete and utter bullshit. Nothing happened with Shirai, and I'm not a whore, and—and not that you actually give a shit? But you can't kiss me, for any reason, at all."

Kou's gaze shifted from the opposite wall to a cupboard and then a window, and he strode out of the front room and almost stepped into the kitchen before stopping two steps outside the lounge. The terror of being wrong kept his back turned, and with that he was becoming comfortable with them being out of sight.

But turned he did, because he was better and didn't see why he had to change to please them when he was in the right. Had he cheated? No. He wasn't a lying backstabber. He pointed at Tom and Misaki.

"You and you! This is none of your business!" He pointed at Seiko. "And you!" Maeko wasn't ignored. "You too!"

Then he looked at Kozue. His hands raised to his chest, and then flung out in denial. "If you want sex like an animal, go with him! I don't care!"

Reizo watched it all with the same shameless and unabashed interest that'd kept rubberneckers ut and about through the ages. Really, he was just waiting for Oubai to run off at the mouth and get slapped. Then one of them would probably run off crying. He had money on Kou for that bit.

He shifted on his seat, frowning just a bit at the way the sill bit into his bottom, and tossed the used candy wrapper onto the floor before he hunched forward and adapted a posture that suggested that he’d be watching this to the end.

His eyes jumped from player to player, lingering on the primary two. He was almost impressed with Kondo. She wasn’t wibbling, or breaking down. Maybe it was all an act and after she got some time alone it’d all boil over and there’d be snot and tears, but right now all there seemed to be was righteous, indignant anger.

Oubai had lost it. He kept trying to scrabble back to dignity, but the haughty bastard had fallen so far it was almost impossible to get back onto his high horse. Not that he wouldn’t try. The huge boy frowned, and grumbled dejectedly. The best part of Kou’s breakdown would be later on, he was sure, when he was trying to justify it all to himself and pretend he hadn’t let his emotions get the better of him.

… Maybe he kept a diary?

“Well, I have been called a beast before,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck and grinning almost bashfully.

Misak's jaw dropped when she heard the last line, she had shut up for a moment, utterly dumbfounded at the insepid accusations coming out of Oubai's mouth. This wa Reizo, for goodness sake! Why the hell would he really like to sleep with Kozue. He never once in all the time there indicated he was into a girl like Kozue. And that line, that horrible idiotic line.

"Don't say such worthless vile accusations Oubai-senpai. At least she's human enough to express some sort of emotions," Misaki spat out then covered her mouth.

Maeko's rage was not even close to calmed and she was still no closer to getting the full story. Something to do with Shirai, something that Kou and Kozue disagreed about. She was inclined to believe Kozue, who had never called her a prostitute or whatever it was that 'house of ill repute' implied.

But the fact that Kozue wasn't hiding behind her, was fighting her own bettles rather than allowing them to be fought, almost came close to leting her understand something. She wasn't quite sure what she understood but her position changed, backing away from Kou and going from trying to fight Kozue's battles to trying to support her fighting.

"If you didn't want it to be our business you wouldn't have challenged her with all of us here." She said, sounding calm in a very clearly forced way. "You could just as easily have called her away and had this conversation in private. You're the one who made it everyone's business."
