A little gambling
Who: Open.
What: Poker Night.
Where: The beach.
When: On the trip. Second night? Third night?
Why: 'cause you can't read her poker face.

"Alright, ante up. Newbies, too, I'll walk you through the first round." Leading by example, Kiriko plucked a few multicoloured chips from her plentiful pile and tossed them haphazardly into the center of the plastic table. She'd set it up (or rather, had someone else set it up for her) out on the sand, not too far from the snack bar, not too close to the shore. The sun had set - bug lamps and tiki torches were lighting the table, that and the full moon that hung too low and too large in the not-completely-black sky. That would remedy itself before long, but it was quite a sight in the meanwhile, and Kiriko watched it contentedly while waiting for the rest of the table to bet. There were still empty seats and stragglers along the shore. She'd shouted at them earlier to come and play, and was debating doing it again.

"Oh yeah, and this is the practice round. We're not betting anything valuable... yet."

"Ah well, probably because it's what I've seen them use on TV some of the time." She shrugged. "No we don't, doesn't mean that when we get back we can't exchange it and have more money to use when we get home."

Misaki glanced at Kozue and laughed lightheartedly, "Going to try to make us raise to match you, huh Kozue-chan?"

Toshimi pushed another random amount of chips into the betting pile without paying it much attention, examining her hand and re-organizing the cards. "Mmm, yes, you can learn some fascinating things about the world from television..." she remarked in a somewhat detached voice, glancing only briefly above her cards.

Finished with whatever it was she was so interested in about the order her cards were in, she smirked at the others. "Ladies, have I ever told you how life is exactly like a game of cards?" This time, her tone was dead serious and fully engaged. She met any looks with a piercing stare straight back in the eye.

Misaki blinked a bit suprised at the change of tone in Toshimi. She laughed lightly, more of a forced laugh that came about from suddenly being nervous. Something in the way Toshimi spoke gave her the creeps, though she didn't want to outright say that and offend the older girl.

She looked at Toshimi and then quickly darted her eyes down then up again and asked softly, "No, no you haven't Toshi-chan."

Kiriko evaded Toshimi's eye. This was quickly surpassing the kind of weird that could be explained away by alcohol, but the other kind of weird didn't fit either, did it? They were at the beach, after all - not at school. Someone was throwing people into Paradise, right? But that hadn't happened with Sonozaki... Or at least, so she claimed. But maybe it wasn't. Maybe Toshimi was just kind of a psycho bitch when you got her away from school.

Kiriko glanced upwards long enough to see her staring creepily at someone else at the table, then looked back down to her cards. She cleared her throat.

"Alright, this round, we show. Whoever has the best hand wins. Last chance to fold 'em, now."

"Toshi-chan," she repeated contemptuously, turning her attention to Misaki. "If you think you've earned it to call me that, you grossly overestimate our relationship. Of course, I can see how you would make that mistake; it's not your fault that you have no understanding of the workings of society in the real world. Someone like you would never have that opportunity; I understand. You may address me as Nawanaka-san or, more properly, senpai."

After a moment, though, she shrugged. "Of course, whether or not you understand the purposes of conforming to societal norms is really of no consequence to me or anyone else. You'll still die alone, so call me whatever you want...Misaki-chan." Toshimi accompanied the sharp edge to this statement with her sweetest, most innocent smile.

She turned her focus back to the game. "You see, in a game of poker, you have a few rounds to try and improve, but in the end, nearly all of the determination of who can win and who can lose is made from the moment the cards are dealt. And although you can try to change your hand, whether or not you'll be provided with the right cards all depends on the order of the same deck from which you were dealt your hand in the first place." She gestured towards the rest of the cards. "In turn, the order of the deck is determined by however it was arranged before it was shuffled from the way it was in the last game, and so on. Any gambler with a little know-how can keep track.

In other words, you may think you're playing a game of chance..."

She placed her hand of cards on the table: a royal flush.

"...but in reality, everything is predetermined. And life is exactly the same way. You have to accept the hand you're dealt."

She stood up. "Of course, there is one difference worth noting." She looked at the rest of them with something between a smirk and a scowl; a far cry from her usual mask. "In life, you're only dealt one hand. If you're going to play, you have to bet it all."

With that, she turned and left the table, disappearing into the night.
