A little gambling
Who: Open.
What: Poker Night.
Where: The beach.
When: On the trip. Second night? Third night?
Why: 'cause you can't read her poker face.

"Alright, ante up. Newbies, too, I'll walk you through the first round." Leading by example, Kiriko plucked a few multicoloured chips from her plentiful pile and tossed them haphazardly into the center of the plastic table. She'd set it up (or rather, had someone else set it up for her) out on the sand, not too far from the snack bar, not too close to the shore. The sun had set - bug lamps and tiki torches were lighting the table, that and the full moon that hung too low and too large in the not-completely-black sky. That would remedy itself before long, but it was quite a sight in the meanwhile, and Kiriko watched it contentedly while waiting for the rest of the table to bet. There were still empty seats and stragglers along the shore. She'd shouted at them earlier to come and play, and was debating doing it again.

"Oh yeah, and this is the practice round. We're not betting anything valuable... yet."

Misaki had decided to play since she didn't want to be in the water that late at night. Looking at Kiriko she looked at the three main colored chips. She looked at the amount Kiriko had thrown out, and counted the chips, to add to it.

"Okay so how do we play?"

Games were a means to display superiority, and had been used to decide fate and victory. Duels were physical, and now looking at the table with its cards and tiki lamps Kouchisei decided poker was mental; people were not butchering each other although he was sure there were people here that Kiriko would like to.

He'd pulled up a chair and was sitting at the end, content to watch. It was a foreign game, and one he didn't know how to play so he'd look like a moron. Still, the psychology of lying and bluffs was universal and he'd learn more about these people by attending rather than not.

"I'm not betting anything. Personal values," he announced. Gambling was stupid. "Still, I wouldn't mind watching, if that's fine."

Kozue, meanwhile, down by where Kiriko was sitting, was entirely enthused to play. Not because she was good at it, by any means, but because she had some money, at least, to throw around, and this promised to be a funny way to spend an evening. She was here as a show of support, with a bit of curiosity, and out of the vague feeling that perhaps Kiriko would stack the cards in her own favor and Kozue could somehow benefit from this.

Kozue her own chips into the pile, not looking down at Kou but very conscious of what he'd just said. Fine.

"You'll learn as you go, Misaki-chan," she said without glancing up from her hand and making vague gestures at the next person at the table which surely meant 'well, go on.'

At Kou's words, she did look up, one eyebrow lifted. Well, at least he wanted to watch. Watching was less stick-in-the-mud-y than she had anticipated, but still.

"What did I just say, senpai? This is the practice round! Sit down, learn how to play, then join the kiddy table and play for fun or for food or something when we start getting serious."

Her eyes flicked sideways to Kozue at her left. Why was she still with him, anyway? It had been a funny joke at the time, but it had long since run his course and the fact that she'd yet to break it off with someone so obviously wrong for her was a bit disconcerting. Pangs of guilt were starting in for having set them up at all, and she hated those.

Kiriko adjusted the sunglasses nestled in her hair and turned her attention back to the cards. Worry about it later, now was time for fun (and taking her friends for all they had).

"Right, so after the ante round, we do the first bets. This is where the game really starts. I dealt, so someone else has to go first..."

"Alright," Misaki smiled and looked over her cards. She clucked her tounge and pushed her hair out of her eyes as she tapped her fingers. Her hands wasn't very good, and she didn't remember all the rules of the game.

Smiling up at the group she asked, "So um...what version of this game are we playing?"

Kouchisei shrugged, and turned his attention to watching how the sea behaved at night. It was beautiful. Being in a secluded bay on the coast, as opposed to a busy city inland, reminded him of the tranquility he enjoyed in his bedroom.

"What are you asking me for? They all use cards," he told Misaki.

The sea also spared him having to watch Kozue. His hands were resting in his lap, and he removed his glasses to place them on the table so his eyes could 'breathe' a little. He had thought he couldn't look at her, but it was possible - it wasn't like he was deeply affected by their earlier conversation.

He looked at Kiriko. One of his hands waved denyingly at her offer, and then he buried his face in it.

Toru had been standing in a corner, trying to avoid attention. Earlier, poker had sounded great! He was good at games, right? It was just another game, albeit one with cards rather than a controller. He even knew strategies! Quite a few manga dealt with this sort of game, and he had some solid strategies in mind. But his motivation had waned once he saw the deck.

In the end, he had recalled that the version of poker in that manga was 17-card poker, and so the strategies were for it. The otaku just hoped that the game would start soon, so he could watch or just sneak out. Until then, he stayed still and attempted to merge with the shadows.

Toshimi had been keeping her distance or, more often than not by now, not showing her face to the team at all; she hadn't been on the beach that day so far.

She happened to be nearby, though, and something about the prospect of a poker game must have interested her, because she strode confidently to the table and took a seat. Rather than greeting the others, she cracked her knuckles, crossed one leg over the other, and smirked.

"Deal me in."

Kiriko looked up from clicking her tongue. Toshimi was not who she had anticipated - much less with that particular entrance. She smirked and lifted an eyebrow as she complied with her senpai's request and distributed the correct amount of chips.

"Secretly an ace player, huh Nawanaka? We're on the first betting round, ante's 200. You know the rules, right?"

It made sense, sort of. She had a killer poker face, she'd proved that much. Something about it sat a little funny, and something in the back of Kiriko's mind (she always pictured the monster in the wedding dress when it spoke) was asking tauntingly if she felt threatened. It was wrong, of course.

But she was glad the first round was just for practice all the same.

Toshimi glanced around at everyone else, calculating. Who was there, how many chips they put in, how confident they looked...then, she shrugged and shook her head, seeming to disregard these calculations. Without looking down at her pile, she pushed a rather large number of chips into the center.

She turned to answer Kiriko, then paused. "An ace player!" she exclaimed after a brief second. She laughed loudly towards nobody in particular, slamming her hand on the table once or twice. "I hadn't thought of that! That's funny!" She chuckled again before adding, "What a waste."

Suddenly entirely serious again, she contemplated the pile of poker chips in the center. "Of course, I know how to play...although strictly speaking, in games of chance there are never rules."

Misaki stared at Toshimi, was this the same girl that normally had a overly ambiguious smile plastered on her face? She rubbed her eyes some and blinked, using the excuse of the smoke from the tiki lamps. Looking at her cards then at kiriko and Toshimi she smiled some commenting.

"Well, you seem really confident Toshi-chan, that's all." not wanting to add, 'normally you can't tell what emotion you're going through at the time.' She looked at the pile of chips and laughed. "It's a good thing this is a practice round, you wouldn't want to loose too much money right?"

Looking over at Kiriko she rubbed the back of her neck, "Are you sure 200 is okay? Are we talking dollars or yen? Because if we're talking american dollars then I'm out, I don't have that sort of money on me."

She sighed at the converstation between the two girls, "Even so there are rules of play though, you don't want to be seen as cheating right? So is this like one of those poker tournement shows? Er...which version of the game are we playing Kiriko-chan? I know there's like four different kinds that they mentioned on the show. Ah...what were they...Straight, Stud, Draw...and something called community poker?"

"Huh? It's just points, Misaki-chan. Nothing to do with money."

She didn't answer right away, given that she was still preoccupied with staring slack-jawed at Toshimi. Um, okay. Somebody probably got her drunk or something. That was unpleasant... and come to think of it, she probably wouldn't have much to bet when they got to the real game. Well, maybe she'd leave after the practice round and sleep it off and be back to her normal, still-vaguely-freaky self in the morning.

"We're doing five card draw for now. Anyway, I put in my bet, so now you have to see it or fold."

"Oh sorry, sorry. When my brother plays with his friends they play for money so that's why I was a bit suprised when you threw in two hundred. I think the blues are a hundred the greens are seventy fives, reds are fifty and whites are twenty five, if I heard Yoshi-san right. Though he's a bit weird I can never tell if he's behing honest or not." Misaki explained and pulled out the chips.

"How are these divided Kiriko-chan?" nodding some she looked over her cards again trying to decide if she was okay with the hand or not. Shrugging she played with the chips, then threw in a few, "I'll see the two hundred."

Misaki looked at the other players and smiled, "Who's going next?"

Kozue furrowed her brow, looking back and forth between Toshimi and Misaki. Did the beach make people crazy or something? It was Misaki she responded to, first, though, because at least Misaki's brand of crazy was, well, expected. "Even if we were playing for money now, why would we be using American money? I mean, we don't exactly have a money exchange up the street or anything. There's nothing up the street." And that was a fact that Kozue had already lamented, if briefly; no clubs, no boardwalk, no external excitement. No cute stranger boys.

She slid her own bet in without actually looking particularly hard at her cards; the calculations and math and hard thinking of this kind of game was not where Kozue shone. Pretending not to know the rules at all until she had a hand that even she knew was killer, and could sweep the table once? That was much more her style. "I'll see two hundred and raise fifty. I, uh, can do that, right?"

After betting, she regarded Toshi again. What had the girl been saying about... well, all of it? Kozue wasn't actually sure that she'd heard Toshi string together that many words, recently.

"Ah well, probably because it's what I've seen them use on TV some of the time." She shrugged. "No we don't, doesn't mean that when we get back we can't exchange it and have more money to use when we get home."

Misaki glanced at Kozue and laughed lightheartedly, "Going to try to make us raise to match you, huh Kozue-chan?"

Toshimi pushed another random amount of chips into the betting pile without paying it much attention, examining her hand and re-organizing the cards. "Mmm, yes, you can learn some fascinating things about the world from television..." she remarked in a somewhat detached voice, glancing only briefly above her cards.

Finished with whatever it was she was so interested in about the order her cards were in, she smirked at the others. "Ladies, have I ever told you how life is exactly like a game of cards?" This time, her tone was dead serious and fully engaged. She met any looks with a piercing stare straight back in the eye.

Misaki blinked a bit suprised at the change of tone in Toshimi. She laughed lightly, more of a forced laugh that came about from suddenly being nervous. Something in the way Toshimi spoke gave her the creeps, though she didn't want to outright say that and offend the older girl.

She looked at Toshimi and then quickly darted her eyes down then up again and asked softly, "No, no you haven't Toshi-chan."

Kiriko evaded Toshimi's eye. This was quickly surpassing the kind of weird that could be explained away by alcohol, but the other kind of weird didn't fit either, did it? They were at the beach, after all - not at school. Someone was throwing people into Paradise, right? But that hadn't happened with Sonozaki... Or at least, so she claimed. But maybe it wasn't. Maybe Toshimi was just kind of a psycho bitch when you got her away from school.

Kiriko glanced upwards long enough to see her staring creepily at someone else at the table, then looked back down to her cards. She cleared her throat.

"Alright, this round, we show. Whoever has the best hand wins. Last chance to fold 'em, now."

"Toshi-chan," she repeated contemptuously, turning her attention to Misaki. "If you think you've earned it to call me that, you grossly overestimate our relationship. Of course, I can see how you would make that mistake; it's not your fault that you have no understanding of the workings of society in the real world. Someone like you would never have that opportunity; I understand. You may address me as Nawanaka-san or, more properly, senpai."

After a moment, though, she shrugged. "Of course, whether or not you understand the purposes of conforming to societal norms is really of no consequence to me or anyone else. You'll still die alone, so call me whatever you want...Misaki-chan." Toshimi accompanied the sharp edge to this statement with her sweetest, most innocent smile.

She turned her focus back to the game. "You see, in a game of poker, you have a few rounds to try and improve, but in the end, nearly all of the determination of who can win and who can lose is made from the moment the cards are dealt. And although you can try to change your hand, whether or not you'll be provided with the right cards all depends on the order of the same deck from which you were dealt your hand in the first place." She gestured towards the rest of the cards. "In turn, the order of the deck is determined by however it was arranged before it was shuffled from the way it was in the last game, and so on. Any gambler with a little know-how can keep track.

In other words, you may think you're playing a game of chance..."

She placed her hand of cards on the table: a royal flush.

"...but in reality, everything is predetermined. And life is exactly the same way. You have to accept the hand you're dealt."

She stood up. "Of course, there is one difference worth noting." She looked at the rest of them with something between a smirk and a scowl; a far cry from her usual mask. "In life, you're only dealt one hand. If you're going to play, you have to bet it all."

With that, she turned and left the table, disappearing into the night.
