Post-Investigation Meeting
Who: Exploration Team and Kozue.
What: Meeting to discuss Toru.
Where: Soyokaze Touka.
When: Day after searching Toru's room.
Why: He's a nice guy really.

Kouchisei arrived at the ryotei when his father's black Ford pulled up by the kerb. He’d chosen to be silent during his journey because the old man was unhappy. He’d wanted a son who wouldn’t be high maintenance. It had been tough at home since his disappearance: the old man's silence had been overwhelming and he absolutely had to come home after school. It had been difficult enough lying, just to investigate Toru's room. But some of the fear the old man showed was moving, and he'd sometimes get a present in the hope he wouldn't do run away again. Guilt on his mind, he’d always made sure to get home quickly. His father was working and he had to do it himself as a result. The walk was good, as it had given him time to think:

It was better to deny that world existed than think he'd almost died.

Remaining inside, the young man thought about how his father seemed conflicted. Running around after him one minute, keeping him happy, and being cold the next. He obviously wasn't used to such dilemmas. Taking a breath, he opened the car door. His chest was tight, his lungs hot and his throat dry. Soon, he was standing on the kerb looking at the car.

This was like he had to make a choice. It was supposed to have been easier! Acknowledge that ridiculous world and the things within, or mend his relationship with his father.

Kouchisei sighed and looked away. It was beginning to feel like the last supper. Nodding his thanks, he had to quickly step back as the car drove away. He was a grown man, his father said. He couldn't stop him going outside, or even associating with friends [something he knew the old man wanted him to find]. Perhaps it was the reason he'd been able to secure a room at the restaurant where members of the diet dined. That was an institution their family had provided members for, and one many of the men of his family aspired to.

His father's behaviour was another result of his acceptance of that world, he figured. And that was his desire to run from his problems. Except everything vanished when he went into the restaurant, replaced by calm. He was wrong. That world was ridiculous and he knew it. It was unbelievable. Hallucinogenic. Stress, lack of oxygen, pain and general weakness; all of them he had suffered. He knew they were the reasons.

He remained inside the lobby, waiting for everyone else to get there. There were things they needed to discuss.

Maeko didn't have a particularly refined palette. She liked sweet food and not much else. Her parents had never made an effort to force her to eat adult food and so she'd been brought up eating little but icecream and anpan and dried apricots. She poked at her food curiously, eating so not to appear ungratful.

She'd had to remain at school today with Gendou, working on the student council's newest bright idea, and hadn't been able to go with them to see Toru. She hadn't yet had a chance to ask Misaki what had happened there and now seemed like as good a time as any. It needed discussing anyway.

"Was Ishinomori there? Did you get to speak to him?" She asked, noticing Kanaye's eyes settle on Misaki.

From her place across the table, Kiriko frowned at Kanaye. How ungracious could you get? If she'd known he was thinking she'd managed to look "decent" she'd probably have up and slapped him right there. As it was, she looked over to Maeko.

"We spoke to him, yes. He didn't want us there, and there's probably something going on his life. So, that's that, isn't it?"

Misaki stared some at the food before her and made a mental note that when she got home she would make herself a normal hamburger and french fries. It wasn't that she didn't like food like this, it was just that normally she didn't eat a lot of it, and this was a bit rich for her normal taste buds. Eating parts of it, and making mental notes to try to recreate, if not make it more accessable to dinners that didn't go to fancy places, she glanced over at Maeko and Kiriko as Toru was brought up.

Sipping some water she added quicky, "He didn't sound like himself though. Normally he's not that blunt. Remember when we went to the arcade. He was really quiet but didn't go out of his way to say much of anything. This isn't like him at all. I should know we talk on line a lot on his journal."

After their fourth course, Kozue's brother had excused himself for a few minutes - with profuse apologies, saying that while they were coming in he'd run into someone he knew from school, one of his senpai, and he wanted to go greet them. Left alone at her table, Kozue had fidgeted for a while, not bothered by her legs going to sleep just yet -- tea ceremonies were way longer than this -- but eventually decided to try and find the bathroom. She asked directions - twice - but this place was large, and confusing, and she inevitably lost herself.

When she heard a familiar voice coming out of a partially open door, however, she stopped; so this was where the other Nanakamado students were eating, including three of her classmates. Well, now she'd know where to go for desert - she stopped just a few paces away from the door, out of sight from inside, hesitating to go in wondering if she should poke her head in to say hello, while she was passing by, or if that was rude. (Of course, listening at the door frame was rude, too, but Kozue wasn't thinking of it like that. She was just "waiting to go in". For a moment or two. Not at all wondering what special circumstances brought all these wildly different people here. Oubai-senpai and Rezio-san, of all people?)

"So he's acting strangely," Kiriko said with a shrug. "And it's probably just like Kou was when he turned up over there, but here's the question..."

Her pause was not so much for dramatic effect as it was to ensure that everyone was paying attention.
"Do we really want to stick our necks out to fight through shadows just so we can try to talk some sense in him? It's dangerous in that other world." She had dropped her voice by this point - likely unecessary because it was a private room, but it was more instinct to her than anything. She grimaced.

"It's weird. And dangerous. And we have no proof that he won't come out. We don't know enough about anything that's happened, our research has been pretty pitiful. I don't think we should have anything to do with it other than figuring out what the hell happened to us, because the best explanation so far is that we were all suffering from some kind of..." She made a few odd hand gestures, searching for words. "... hallucinogenic... asbestos poisoning. Or something."

Her noncommital tone said that she didn't really believe that to be the case. She folded her hands in her lap after she finished speaking, looking around the table and waiting for the other's responses.

Kouchisei had thought the same, it seemed. He had been depressed that day - hadn't wanted to come to school - and promptly vanished. Then he'd met a side of himself that had been nothing like what he was willing to admit. Now he could confess that it was a part of him. It still, however, made him feel uncomfortable and he shifted.

He took his glasses off and cleaned them with a special cloth hidden inside his breast pocket. "Hmn. Not like himself... As it was, that was like with myself that one time. Well, I'm fairly sure poisoning's an explaination, Kiriko-san... And as it is, I won't be going back. My father's wary of letting me outside."

His expression showed relief. The fact his father was demanding his return, unless otherwise scheduled, gave him a reason to avoid visiting that world. How well did he know these people really? And to risk his life for them? It was better to be safe.

"Yes, we really want to stick our necks out. How could we live with ourselves if we can possibly, maybe, save someone, and yet, leave them to die? Even worse if we're the only ones that could be able to save them, which we very well might be. Now, this could just be me, but leaving someone to die isn't something I'd do if I had any other choice in the matter." Kanaye announced, standing up. "We need to use anything in our power to save people! Even if we die, we die standing. We die so that others may live. We will save them! Or at least, I will, if you won't stand with me!" Kanaye finished, with Dramatic Pose II: Electric Boogaloo.

"Shut up, Satou," she muttered. He was really very wearying.

"You spoke to that cop, too, didn't you? She said Sato-san was murdered. Murdered. Also, Oubai-san came out just fine - no shadows even tried to attack him. This stuff about saving people's lives, it's a fantasy."

She frowned and paused for another bite of her meal and sip of her drink.

"Too much television, or something like that. The only evidence we have that anyone who goes in there is in danger is Sato-san's body, and unless one of you has the report from the autopsy, it doesn't prove anything. You just want to feel important, when really it's meaningless."

She looked to Kou. He seemed to be backing her up, thus far.

"If we leave it alone for long enough, Ishinomori-san might right himself. Why don't we at least wait to see what happens?"

The only thing keeping Maeko for going for Kanaye' throat when he mentioned the possibility of Misaki dying in that place being worth anything was the seating arrangements. They were knelt at opposite sides of the table and killing Kanaye with her bare hands would mean climbing over the table and probably kicking someone. It wasn't quite worth it. She finshed chewing instead while Kiriko spoke, trying to calm down enough to express herself with minimal strangling.

"We are not going into that world without taking every precaution we can beforehand." She said, voice strained. "If you want to die then die alone. I refuse to trust you with something as important as Misa- our lives when you have an attitude like that."

She sighed, trying to calm down a little more. "Ikeda-san is right. That place is dangerous and we shouldn't enter unless it is absolutely necessary. Even if he's there we have time. Oubai-san was there for at least a week. We have time and we need to use it to prepare carefully."

"I never said he had to do it now. I'm all for preparations. However, Kei-kun's death was very like Kou-kun's disappearance. The body had no injuries of any kind, and if he was poisoned or something, the police would have said so. He started acting weird before he disappeared, and when he came back, he was kinda dead. Notice the similarities? However, we rescued Kou. He didn't want to leave, so he didn't, and he acted like a completely different person. Therefore, we can conclude that simply waiting won't work, as if Sato Kei really did go to the other world, he ended up dead. Do you want Toru-kun to die?" Kanaye finished his rant. "If you still don't wanna help, go ahead. I'll rescue him myself or die trying."

Keiichi had been mostly quiet. Primarily because he'd been enjoying his twelve course meal. Twelve courses. He hadn't even known that was POSSIBLE.

But they'd all been delicious. It was only the ongoing discussion that made him speak up.

"I'd say you're both right," he stated, gesturing at both the seeming MaeKiriko alliance and their resident pose expert. "That place *is* dangerous. We shouldn't go in there unless necessary."

Sighing, he figured this was the part where it got messy.

"But Kanaye's right too. This...can't all be a coincidence. I'll be absolutely honest: I don't believe in coincidences. We've all seen enough things that should be impossible... for me to conclude that Toru's going to be okay, considering what we know...I can't do it. Just can't."

Taking a forkful of salmon, Keiichi's mood improved slightly. But only momentarily.

"I just wish you three could get along well enough to recognize the wisdom in what you say. The last trip we made into that place could have been a debacle because of your bickering."

You were acting rather rude, telling me that I should be on my own, that you didn't want to help, and that I was your Kohai." she blushed some but was still looking at them. "Toru-kun was acting the same way when we went to see him. I think...maybe if we split up work we can figure things out. Like some of us watch Toru kun to see what he does and the rest tries to figure out what that place is."

She looked down, "I just want him to be safe, that's all. He's my friend and I don't want to have what happeed to Kei-san, happen to anyone else."

Shiori's family had always found it odd that for a girl that loved skirts as much as she did, she absolutely despised dresses. Not quite as much as jeans, but it was a close call. She figured it was because of the length - if the bottom was too short, she always felt like she could get by with a skirt and a dressy shirt, but if it was too long then it felt like the school uniform. To say she was picky about dresses was an understatement.

Thankfully, she didn't have to deal with them that much. And fortunately she had found a dress she liked for those rare situations where she did have to wear a dress. Pale yellow in color and reaching a little past mid-thigh and held up with two thin straps tied behind her neck, the dress itself was cute. But Shiori, being unused to wearing dresses, fussed over it.

Consequently, she was late for the dinner that Oubai-san had arranged at Soyokaze Touka.

Being late was a common occurrence for Shiori, however, and she had managed to make her way to the restaurant without getting distracted. Entering the restaurant and being directed to where the group was, Shiori spotted a girl lurking outside of the door.

She stopped. The girl didn't look familiar, but... why would she be peeking in?

"Um, do you need someone?" Shiori asked, blinking at the girl.

The question of whether to go inside had quickly become obsolete for Kozue, as she listened to what, exactly, her classmates were saying. Murder? Saving people? 'That place'? Something about the boy who had died, and Oubai-senpai, and... and what else? It was all a little bit confusing and more than a little frightening.

In fact, she hadn't noticed the other girl approach until she spoke; Kozue looked up, her cheeks turning a bit pink as she was caught, not only at eavesdropping but at eavesdropping on people talking about murder.

"Oh, I, uh, wanted to let Oubai-senpai know something, but... is he in there? I didn't want to disturb anyone if it wasn't the right room," she explained, still flushed and a bit nervous. What if they knew she'd been listening? And killed her? Or something! Her brain was rushing to the least likely but most movie-like scenarios, at a mile a minute.

Looking inside the room (or as much as she could with it barely open), Shiori looked for Oubai-san. Unable to see him, she opened the door slowly and peered inside.

"Um..." she said, eyes searching for her classmate. She recognized everyone, as was expected, but for some reason Oubai-san didn't jump out right away. Finally spotting him, she opened the door wider. "Hey, Oubai-san? Someone's here to talk to you."

She took a step away from the door so he could get through, hesitating slightly. She should probably go inside then, shouldn't she? It was probably something private...

Giving the girl a quick smile, Shiori slid inside and wandered over to the nearest empty seat. Smoothing her skirt down before she sat, she gave a small wave to everyone. She felt like she was intruding; why couldn't she had just slipped inside quietly?

Kouchisei sighed. Kanaye had a flair for the dramatic and he didn't. Were they leaving people to die? He was alive. Everything in their power, huh? What if it stopped? What could they do if there was a Shadow they couldn't beat? This talk was ruining his meal; the pickled cucumber held between his chopsticks slid down and landed on his plate.

"Sit down and eat," he told Kanaye coolly.

Then Kiriko spoke, and he felt a heavy weight move from his shoulders. Kanaye would listen to her. She mentioned the female officer, and murder; both weren't supernatural events. This wasn't a manga, he told himself. He'd read a book when he got home. That would slow his mind down.

Maeko followed, and he looked at his meal. The more they spoke, the increasingly dangerous that world was imagined in his mind, and the more he told himself to stay at home with his father. But he also felt like a coward and the guilt if something did happen would be crushing. So when Kanaye talked he wasn't paying attention.

Hearing a boy's voice, he looked up to see Keiichi spearing a piece of salmon with his fork. He looked at his own plate, which was untouched, and a cold rush of air made him rub his arms. Then Misaki talked, and when his mind translated what she was saying it shut down, preferring to think it wasn't a problem.

A few minutes later [seconds? he wasn't sure] he was aware of the door opening and looked up to see a kimono-clad woman entering the room. She told him that Shiori had arrived and he told her to bring her to them. Another minute later and he looked up to see Shiori entering the room. He would have chided her for her lack of punctuality, but by now lacked the energy. Then she talked, and his breath caught in his throat.

"Someone's outside?"

"Oh, no, it's--" she stopped, too late to deter the girl in the yellow dress from telling the entire room that she was there. Oh dear. This was bad. Still blushing, she stepped a bit more into view of those in the room, catching aight of Oubai almost immediately. She took a breath, knowing she had to say something, and sterling herself against panic.

"Ah, I..." She could come up with something to say, surely. Off the top of her head, any excuse. "I didn't mean to interrupt, I just wanted to let Oubai-senpai know that my brother had already settled the account of an extra dessert," she managed, in a slightly faltering voice. It was a far shot from her usual poise, and the lie was not a terrible one, but not a good one either. Of course, she would go directly to a waiter and pre-pay for that Castanella as soon as she left here.

"Ah, Misaki-san, I can make it up to you later, okay? Please forgive the interruption." She bowed, and turned to make her exit, hoping fervently that nobody stopped her.

A boy Reizo’s size really shouldn’t be allowed to move that fast, or load that much malice into a look directed at a tiny girl in a yellow dress coming into the room, but there he was, slipping in beside Kozue and moving to slide a strong arm in around her slender shoulders. His expression fell just short of pleasant, smile not quite reaching his eyes and twisted into something terrible by the jagged scar striping the corner of it. It was like a great, scary beast inviting a doe into its lair for dinner.

“ You shouldn’t just run off like that,” he quipped, eyes dancing around the room before settling back onto Kozue, “Kiriko and Misaki and I would just love to have..” He stared at her then, confusion breaking through and onto his face for just a moment as he tried to remember her name,” … classmate join us. Your brother will understand, right? Just a quick stop to talk with friends.”

((It's not just cool, it's awesome!))

How did he move that fast? Was he on any sports teams? She couldn't remember, but then again, she was distracted with fear and worry, and especially distracted by how quickly he was there, blocking her exit and constraining her. In the first brief moment that Reizo's arm went around her shoulder, she flinched, and then forced herself to be completely still. (Really, inside, she felt like shaking.) She looked up at Reizo and continued trying to present that still, proper, smiling front; it was much harder than it usually was, but she managed something almost like a smile.

"Oh, I - I'm sure just a few minutes is okay, before Nii-san gets back and misses me." And, was it bad that part of her was for just a moment violently indignant that he didn't know her name? Riding on the strength of that indignation, and some security from the idea that her brother would miss her, she forced herself to actually move into Reizo's arm and make that 'smile' more... smile-like. "Let's sit and chat, then." Something a little bit like a snuggle - almost. If only to prove she wasn't paralyzed with fear. However, she couldn't keep looking up at him: his face, his scar, and worst of all, his eyes. All were frightening. So she looked to Oubai again.

"... are you already up to desert? I guess we must be slow eaters."

Reizo nearly faltered when the girl leaned back into his arm, turning what he had hoped would simply be a scary ushering in to something more familiar and intimate and, loathe to admit it, frightening to the tall boy. His smile slipped for a moment and he shot the pretty girl a dark look out of the corner of his eye, still ruminating on just what the hell her name was and how best to get out of the awkward situation without recoiling like he’d just been bitten by a poisonous snake.

Still, he had his pride and he got some idea of what she was doing-- it had happened before. It wasn’t odd for a pretty girl to fall back on their good looks and flirt to try and get on his better side, but the way this girl had done it was almost a challenge to him. She’d lost some of that lost little animal quality. Reizo really, really hated challenges.

His fingers curled tighter around one of her slim shoulders, falling just short of digging painfully into it as he tugged her closer into his side. And hoped desperately she wouldn’t up the ante any, he was already out of ideas.

The smile stretched across Kiriko's lips did not quite reach her eyes. She waited until Reizo had 'escorted' Kozue in, watching both of them carefully. When they were seated, she took another delicate bite, followed by a slow drink from her cup.

Her tone was smooth and polite when she put it down and looked back to Kozue with that same smile.

It was far too many courses for her. Emi really didn't comprehend how anyone could eat that much food in one sitting, but at least it was all very good. She could understand why her mother insisted on eating there every now and then. However, she had excused herself in the middle of the meal for a moment to use the restroom. Too much tea between courses.

Her footsteps slowed to a stop in the hall on her way there though when she was struck with sudden déjà vu. She remembered this scenario from not too long ago. The same voices of the same people from before. At least they sounded familiar. She hesitantly took a few steps nearer to the door of the room she heard them coming from and listened more carefully to verify it was really them. And, indeed, it was. She already knew two of the people, but they were just Tomako's weirdo sister and Kiriko. They weren't currently talking about the same thing from before by the time she started eavesdropping again. This time there seemed to be someone else who overheard them who had gotten caught? She really didn't know, but it seemed that way based on the last few sentences she heard. Either way, if that were so then it meant they had been going on about something earlier.

Should she step in this time to figure out what they were going on about before? Should she not? The young girl wasn't shy enough to worry about what they would think if she randomly barged in. In fact, she almost felt more than entitled if Misaki and Kiriko could be in on it. It was more a matter of deciding if she really wanted answers to the questions she had for them. She avoided it the last time she overheard them talking, since it was just too... weird. Chances were they were all just a bunch of closet nerds talking about video games, but... she still wasn't sure and she was still curious. It was now or never. Taking a deep breath Emi went ahead and walked in carefully. She looked them over silently for a moment, because wrinkling her nose at them and placing her hands on her hips.

"Ikeda-san, I want to know what this is all about!" It seemed easier for her to try to confront someone she knew instead of openly demanding answers from the whole group right away. If nothing else, it gave her more an excuse for randomly popping into the scene.... sorta. In a way. Maybe.
