Post-Investigation Meeting
Who: Exploration Team and Kozue.
What: Meeting to discuss Toru.
Where: Soyokaze Touka.
When: Day after searching Toru's room.
Why: He's a nice guy really.

Kouchisei arrived at the ryotei when his father's black Ford pulled up by the kerb. He’d chosen to be silent during his journey because the old man was unhappy. He’d wanted a son who wouldn’t be high maintenance. It had been tough at home since his disappearance: the old man's silence had been overwhelming and he absolutely had to come home after school. It had been difficult enough lying, just to investigate Toru's room. But some of the fear the old man showed was moving, and he'd sometimes get a present in the hope he wouldn't do run away again. Guilt on his mind, he’d always made sure to get home quickly. His father was working and he had to do it himself as a result. The walk was good, as it had given him time to think:

It was better to deny that world existed than think he'd almost died.

Remaining inside, the young man thought about how his father seemed conflicted. Running around after him one minute, keeping him happy, and being cold the next. He obviously wasn't used to such dilemmas. Taking a breath, he opened the car door. His chest was tight, his lungs hot and his throat dry. Soon, he was standing on the kerb looking at the car.

This was like he had to make a choice. It was supposed to have been easier! Acknowledge that ridiculous world and the things within, or mend his relationship with his father.

Kouchisei sighed and looked away. It was beginning to feel like the last supper. Nodding his thanks, he had to quickly step back as the car drove away. He was a grown man, his father said. He couldn't stop him going outside, or even associating with friends [something he knew the old man wanted him to find]. Perhaps it was the reason he'd been able to secure a room at the restaurant where members of the diet dined. That was an institution their family had provided members for, and one many of the men of his family aspired to.

His father's behaviour was another result of his acceptance of that world, he figured. And that was his desire to run from his problems. Except everything vanished when he went into the restaurant, replaced by calm. He was wrong. That world was ridiculous and he knew it. It was unbelievable. Hallucinogenic. Stress, lack of oxygen, pain and general weakness; all of them he had suffered. He knew they were the reasons.

He remained inside the lobby, waiting for everyone else to get there. There were things they needed to discuss.

A good place to discuss this in private? Maeko thought to herself, remembering what Kou had said in his email. We'd have had less eavesdroppers if we shouted about everything in the middle of town.

Maeko shoved her food around the small plate with disinterest, looking over the two uninvited guests. It wasn't sweet so she didn't really want it. Hopefully once the Kondo girl and the middle-schooler were dealt with it would finally be time for dessert.

"We are eating." She said plainly and as pleasantly as she could, answering before Kiriko could. "Are you lost?"

"Hayashi?"

The cool and vaguely intimidating front fell when she saw the little hellion enter, and Kiriko's hand moved from her cup to her forehead, accompanied by a quiet sigh. This was a private room. Private! Then again, she doubted even posting a security detail would stop Emi from getting where she wanted to go.

Well, if they'd both heard, it would just have to be dealt with, wouldn't it? She waved the younger girl inside.

"Close the door behind you and sit down," she grumbled. "Next to me," she added - those who didn't know how to handle her shouldn't have the misfortune of sitting next to her while they were dealing with such delicate issues, after all.

She bit the inside of her lip and looked around the table in silent consultation with her party members. This was a tight spot, how were they to get out of it? Kiriko frowned.

"What did you hear, you two?" she asked again. Best way to know how much they had to explain, right?

Misaki twisted her napkin and sighed as she sipped her juice. There were a few things she was going to have to do. One was to get Oubai sempai a "I'm sorry lunch" which wouldn't be too hard. The other thing was to make sure that Emi didn't tell Tomo about her visit here and what they were talking about. She didn't need him knowing.

"Kou, your restaurant sucks on privacy. Get guards or something, at least they'll slow them down." Kanaye, after he finished glaring at Kou, instead turned and looked at the new comers. He smiled. The older one was hot. "Hello~! Sit down, you're not going anywhere. I think the first question we should ask is: who are you and what is your name? For those of us who don't know you two, at any rate." Quite frankly, Kanaye was shocked he didn't know who the older girl was. She was hot, maybe even cuter them Misaki. Seriously, what is up with this? Is there something in the water that makes the girls far more attractive then almost everyone?

"I'm not lost!" Emi grumbled with a displeased frown on her face. She clearly wasn't and he wouldn't be shrugged off like that so easily. Thankfully, Kiriko gave her the proper acknowledgement. Though she still had an unhappy expression, Emi obeyed and shut the door before going over to sit next to the girl.

As she glanced around at them again a few of them seemed a little uneasy, but even so she was hoping she'd finally get some answers. "I'm Hayashi Emi, a seventh grader at Nanakamado. Don't bother introducing yourselves to me though. I really don't care and I already know Ikeda-san and Tomako's sister. I just want some explanations first. This is the second time I've caught you guys together sitting around talking about weird stuff!" Granted, she hadn't really caught them talking about what they were before this time around. She only caught the end of the conversation after the other girl had been pulled in, but she would be willing to bet that they had been going on before that.

"I don't know what the crap you were all talking about, but 'Paradise'? Some other world? A shadow? People vanishing in school? That's not stuff you can just sit around blabbering on about where people can overhear you without someone getting at least creeped out," she explained, pointing over to Kozue afterwards. "See? She looks pretty creeped out to me!"

Kozue was pretty sure that she wasn't getting out of Shirai-san's grip any time soon - he was probably as strong as he looked, and, ow, that kind of hurt! If he directed her to sit down, that was where she was going. When the younger girl barged in, however, she nearly jumped, and blinked over at her with surprise. Apparently there was something going on in here - as if talk of murders and mortal danger wasn't enough to prove to her that, yes, something suspicious definitely was happening? Even for someone as occupied with herself as Kozue was, it was becoming painfully obvious.

But she turned to Kanaye first; he, at least, was being.... nice? Kind of polite? He was smiling. That helped a little. "Kondo Kozue." She said, and took a breath. If they knew she'd been listening - should she lie - would they know? Were they more or less likely to kill her and bury her body in a shallow grave somewhere on the grounds of the ryotei (maybe in the zen garden, eek, she didn't want to spend her afterlife haunting a garden at Soyokaze Touka, please) if she said what she'd heard or kept quiet and pretended it was nothing? Or -- or, or...? The fear and indecision were pretty easy to read on her face for a moment.

"Several things. That sounded serious, and dangerous - something about poor Sato-san, I think? And what Hayashi-san said," she added after a moment, nodding at the small girl. She took another breath, still terrified and trying hard to mask it - one of best giveaways, though, was that she was trembling, just a little bit, all through her arms and shoulders. "And about the police. And... My apologies for inadvertently overhearing your conversation." She wasn't going to echo Emi's sentiments, but the kid was right. The door had been open and everything.

In her lap, Kiriko laced her fingers together. Fidgeting with her clothes was one of her nervous tics, she knew, and she'd rather not come off as nervous as she was feeling, so she held her fingers still.

How to deal with this...

If they told the truth, it's not like either of them would believe them. They could prove it pretty easily, but even if they did believe it, it was pretty unethical to drag them into a situation like this, wasn't it? Plus, they'd probably just think the whole group was crazy.

On the other hand, she couldn't think of any convenient excuses, Reizo's firm grip on Kozue was surely enough to tell her something was up and Emi probably wouldn't let it drop without a thorough explanation.

Kiriko wasn't sure what to do - so she rounded on Reizo.

"Why didn't you close the damned door?!"

Reizo stared dumbfounded at the small girl who’d just barged in, fingers still shy of painful on one of Kozue’s slender shoulders and hugging her perhaps a bit closer to him in all the excitement. He let her go when he felt her shaking, cocked an eyebrow at her and tossed her a sharp grin, evidently believing he was the one responsible for her trembling.

Then snapped his head around to glare icily at Kiriko and take a step towards her, corner of his mouth curling up into a snarl.

“What the fuck, you’re blaming me?! If this guy’s staff,” he snapped, stabbing a finger towards Kou,” was any better, maybe this shit wouldn’t of happened!”

He snorted and stalked over to the door and slid it shut in an angry slam, before sticking a middle finger up in the air at Kiriko.

“Happy, bitch?”

"Shirai-san, please don't call Kiriko-chan such a horrible name! She's not like that at all, and you know it. She's just trying to figured out what to do. And this isn't Oubai-sempai's fault either. It's not his staff's job to keep people from walking around and I invited Kondo-chan over here, remember, so that rules out the fact that she just wanted to be nosy or something." Misaki said quickly and looked down at her plate and then up at Kiriko, then back at the two girls there. She was nervous and everything was happening so fast that she couldn't control her thoughts and just rambled.

"Kondo-chan, Emi-chan, I'm sure you've heard the rumors right? About when the day is sunny and you turn the door handle the opposite way, you're supposed to find Paradise," Misaki said frankly and chewed on her lip some, "Well we...that is everyone here, found ourselves locked in the gym at the school not too long ago, and we didn't know a way out, so we tried it, and to be honest. It worked...there's...this weird place...and well...I know it's hard to believe but it's a real thing. We found Oubai-sempai there after he went missing. If...If you don't believe me then I'll understand, but you can't tell people about this. There's some very strange stuff going on in there, scary stuff, and we're trying to figure it out, okay. I know it sounds funky but...it's the truth."

She exhaled some, not realizing she'd been holding her breath wondering if the others were going to yell at her.

She was almost amused at the yelling between Kiriko and... that scary-looing guy that was way too tall. She would've spoken up that it really wouldn't have matter since she overheard them the other day anyway, but it was more entertaining to keep her mouth shut for now. Then, finally, Tomako's sister started giving explanations for what they were saying. At the start of the spiel she had a very curious and interested look. However, that quickly faded to one of disappointment.

"Those rumors? That's all this is about? You're not just a chowderhead, you're a loony, too! Only idiots listen and believe that sort of crap. That's like sending one of those stupid chain text messages to ten people just so the ghost of some murdered girl won't kill you within twelve hours!" She rolled her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. "What a waste of time this was!"

Just to make her point even more clear, she stood up from her seat next to Kiriko and walked over to the conveniently placed handled door to the room's private bathroom. "Look. I'll do it right now, nothing will happen, and you can see what a bunch of clowns you're being. Then afterwards we can go find a mirror and say Bloody Mary three times or pull out a Ouija board." She placed her hand on the knob and started turning it the wrong way and opening it just as the rumor had said while she grumbled to herself. The room looked exactly what it should've looked like in her opinion. It was empty to begin with so she didn't suspect anything was wrong, and it certainly wasn't 'Paradise' unless that was there idea of Paradise. "See? It's no different. Morons."

Emi then took the time to step inside and look around just to further make it clear it wasn't anything unusual. Yep. Nothing. However, then her text message ringtone started playing. She was a little startled until she realized it was probably just her parents wondering where she went to. "Oh, hey, maybe that's the murdered faceless girl," she joked. However, when she pulled it out she frowned as she didn't recognize the number displayed on the front screen's caller ID

She had to admit, it did sound very much like... well, like something that a crazy person would say. Or a really poorly constructed lie. Kozue frowned, but didn't say anything while Emi demonstrated the ridiculousness of the whole business; she did whip out her cellphone, though, momentarily, just to check. In a weird twist of luck, it was right on the hour.

She peered around the other people at the table to the open door, and the middle schooler who'd just stepped into the bathroom. Emi was right: it didn't look like another world at all, and this was beginning to seem like some dumb story from a B-rate horror movie or a late-night anime.

"That's funny - I didn't think doors opened when you pulled the handle wrong," she mumbled, though, suddenly remembering when her roommate had tried this crazy rumor out, and had spent the better part of twenty minutes tugging furiously on their closet door. No results. But this little girl had pulled it open? And Kozue had clearly seen the handle turn a way it shouldn't have.

She stood up, and walked the few feet over to the door handle, now that she was free of Reizo's grip again. (Which made her feel in slightly less peril of being murdered, and that was nice. Also, since her classmates and senpai seemed intent on telling insane stories to her, instead of 'fessing up the truth of what they'd been talking about.)

Curiosity compelled her the last few steps until she was standing in the bathroom, cellphone still held gingerly in her hand. "This... no, it's just the water closet. It's not weird, or scary, or anything." When her phone beeped at her, she jumped just a little, nonetheless. "Oh, I'm sorry, I could have sworn I put this on silent. How rude of me."

"Oh, why don't you answer it? It's obviously important. Don't worry, we'll wait~" Kanaye smiled. "You thought our story was a joke, did you? Good, that means you are sane. But it's no joke, and you'll find that out soon enough. Here's a warning, though," Kanaye leaned forward for emphasis. "It's gonna sting a bit." Kanaye relaxed, sat back, and hoped he didn't look like an idiot.

Misaki swallowed some and looked at the others. "We shouldn't let them be in there too long...what if one of those things comes out here. Are we going to be able to handle it?"

She got up carefully and went over to the door, "I'll come with you two. This place isn't safe. We shouldn't be here too long."

The girl was still staring uneasily at her phone trying to at least remember where that area code was from. She couldn't just let it keep ringing, but she was hesitant to answer with all of the creepy thoughts in mind. The comments from the others snapped her out of it though. Oh, he looked like an idiot in her opinion, but that really wasn't unusual when it came to her. Were they still going on about that nonsense even after they proved the door wouldn't lead to their so called Paradise? Just because her phone and the other girl's phone was ringing didn't mean anything. It was just a coincidence! Once again she found herself rolling her eyes. Now the clearly normal restroom wasn't safe.

"It's a bathroom," Emi replied. "I'm pretty sure nothing is going to crawl out of the toilet and get me." This was just getting more ridiculous by the second. She wasn't going to be weirded out to the point that she wasn't going to answer her phone. Just ignoring it for a few second apparently wasn't going to stop it from ringing. She flipped it open and held it up to her ear. "Hello?" What she was hoping to be a familiar voice was just one creepy word and then nothing. Her mouth opened to reply in surprise, but there was nothing. What was that all about? After a moment, she flipped the phone closed and took a deep breath.

"...O-okay, guys, that wasn't funny! You shouldn't be pranking people like that!"

"Aoi-san, you can calm down," she said, looking to her pink-haired classmate. They were - they were all insane, weren't they? Perhaps it was Kanaye's comment that had brought that thought to the front of her mind. "There's nowhere to go, and we're hardly in any danger in here."

She glanced over at the younger girl in the bathroom (and smaller, if only slightly, but man it was nice to be around someone who was shorter than her!) as she answered her phone, and hung up almost immediately: "What was that?" Meanwhile, her own phone was still ringing. Maybe it really was a prank? If they knew her phone number, which was tricky but not all that hard to get, and Emi's.... well... someone could be dialing under the table. She flipped the phone open and pressed it to her ear. "Hello?"

Silence. And then a voice, very quietly, very haltingly, saying one word. "Persona."

"Wha-" she started to say, and then was hit by what felt like a two-ton brick. Inside her skull. She shut her eyes - she nearly doubled over - and bit her lips together, hard, to keep from crying out.

"This isn't a prank at all Emi-chan..." Misaki started to say when Kozue doubled over and she rusted to the girl's side.

"Kozue-chan!" Misaki moved with speed that she'd gained from having to deal with two younger siblings who liked to experiment around the house and had, on more then one occasion, almost manged to burn themself or the house in some fashion. She put her arms around Kozue and whispered quietly, "It's okay, it'll stop in a minute."

Misaki glanced over at the others. She wasn's sure what they could do. What if something came out. This was really bad.

Kiriko got to her feet. Half of her wanted to waltz over and yank the door closed, but that couldn't happen just yet - they'd gotten the phone calls. They'd be getting Persona's, too, in a minute, if this was like what happened to them... But... they couldn't be screaming through the whoel restaurant about monsters appearing suddenly! So, she grabbed the wrists of the people to her right and left*, dragging both of them over, stomping in with Misaki, Kozue and Emi and shutting the door carefully behind her.

"We'll be right back," she said to the waiting dinner party before the door clicked shut. They wouldn't be heard this way and if any shadows came, they'd be prepared. Once the two girls found out what was going on, they'd join the others - hopefully she'd made that clear enough.

"If you're like us," Kiriko said, "You're being called by your personas. They'll appear in a minute. But don't worry - they won't hurt you."

Kanaye looked in disbelief as Kiriko and Misaki ran over to Kozue and Emi, the former grabbing the arms of Toshimi and Keiichi as she did so. He really wanted to help, but he knew that wouldn't be the best sort of action, so he just shrugged and turned back to his meal.
"That was interesting. Anyone want any of the salmon sushi?" He asked, looking around. Hearing no complaint, he nodded to himself and grabbed the sushi, taking a bite. "Mmm...Kou, your food is as good as your security is bad."

Most of the meal had gone by quietly, at least for Keiichi. Talking in the larger group was never one of his priorities, no matter how much he wanted to. Really, between everyone, he felt like he had a tendency to be shot down anyway.

Lots of people in the group were louder and more vehement about things than he was, after all.

But when Kiriko grabbed him, the seriousness of what had just occurred hit him like a ton of bricks. He didn't have his weapon, but he could summon his Persona. Hopefully, that would be enough.

"If this ever happens again," he managed, weakly, "we've gotta figure out a way to prevent people from doing this..."

Toshimi, too, had kept quiet, stuck somewhere between not knowing what she could add to the conversation when so many people had their own things to say and being stunned speechless by the impeccable quality of the food. When the intruders started learning about Paradise, though, it was more of a "what are these people thinking" kind of silence, which erupted into a "What in the---" as she was pulled through the door.

She wished that Kiriko would have at least given her time to grab some of the silverware. She'd grown accustomed to entering the other world only while fully armed. If they ran into trouble, she'd have to...her eyes widened. She'd borrowed the dress she was wearing from the girl in the room next to hers, and it had no pockets, so Toshimi didn't have her cell phone, either. If there was trouble, there wasn't much that she'd be able to do, other than perhaps throwing her shoes at an enemy.

"I think we'd be better off not telling people outright how to do this," she said to Keiichi, a little perturbed by her lack of weaponry. She watched the potential new Persona-users with apprehension, hoping their presence didn't call any Shadows to attention.

Emi looked over with surprise at the girl who had nearly doubled over, but thankfully Misaki had rushed over to help her. Then Kiriko came in, dragging two of the other older kids with her. The bathroom was getting... awfully crowded. But the more she listened to them talk, the more she was getting disgusted with the whole situation. There was just no way any of this could be real or true. It was crazy to even consider it! Now the older girl who had first entered the bathroom with her must've just been playing along.

This prank was going too far. There was one way to put an end to it. She flipped her phone back open and redialed the number from the previous call. Rather than hear the ringing from someone else's phone like she had hoped, she felt that brief sting that the weird blond-haired guy had mentioned earlier. She let out a small yelp and clenched her eyes shut, but bit her lip and remained on her feet.

When she reopened her eyes Emi stared in silent shock at the figure that was sitting on its knees in front of her. It was a girl not much older than herself. Or at least not much bigger. And... she was assuming it was a girl anyway. Rather, it looked female to her, but the creature was quite faceless and had pitch black skin that looked more like a silk sort of fabric than it did real skin. It was clothed in a light blue dress with a lavender cape draped over that. There were plenty of other details she could've noticed as well with jewelry and swirling body decorations, but it was probably the random floating orbs of water that surrounded it that made it the most clear it wasn't normal.

Again and again, she kept telling herself not to scream. She wouldn't scream. Not in front of everyone else. "O-oh..." Emi finally stammered out. No other words came to mind at that moment.

Kozue's headache was already fading, and she swayed a little in Misaki's grasp, before shifting so she could stand completely on her own power. It was kind of embarrassing that they'd all seen her collapse like that. Well, at least she hadn't cried - that would have been the worst. "Thank you, Misaki-chan," she said with a faint smile.

She looked down at her cellphone, still dazed. Dazed enough, in fact, not to question why there were now six people shut up in a rather small bathroom, and one of them a boy, to boot. The call had ended, or dropped. Maybe she'd hung up when that headache hit? She tapped through to "Re-Dial Last Incoming Call", almost absently. And then the younger girl, Emi, yelped: Kozue's head jerked up in time to see the....

What was that? A woman? A monster? A really weird geisha? A hallucination? She thumbed the "Call" button, still staring at the faceless, kneeling thing.

She couldn't be sure if the shattering noise she heard was in her head, or audible to everyone else. There was a flash in her eyes, and a woman appeared before her. It was a wonder she fit in the bathroom at all: she was tall, almost twice Kozue's height. And she was a pale gold all over: her skin, her hair, her eyes, the belted, dress-like garment she wore. ("Dress-like" was the best description; it didn't quite manage to cover everything a dress was meant to cover.) There were white daffodils braided in her hair, though, the only items off of the color scheme. If she had feet, underneath the long dress, Kozue couldn't see them - but the woman-ghost-monster-thing did seem to be hovering off the ground. Although she looked rather....nicer than a monster or a ghost should, Kozue decided.

She gulped, nervous. "What's happening?" She managed, after a moment where her throat was a bit too dry for her to speak.

Kiriko grimaced, rummaging around in her clutch for her phone.

"They're Persona."

She hit the redial button and a flash of light later, a white-gold fox with many tails was circling her feet and peering quizzically at both Emi and Kozue.

"This one's mine."

The fox yipped in confirmation, waving several of its tails all at once. Kiriko skimmed the two new personas, wondering absently what their powers would be, but also considering what this meant for their users. She would have preferred not to drag anybody else into this. And what about Emi? She was only a kid. All the more reason to avoid the other world.

"The place where we can summon them, it's called 'Paradise.' It's... not always a bathroom, though. If you think about something else it will become something else. You can try it, if you want. If you look around for a while, you'll find monsters called 'shadows'... the Personas are for fighting them. This is where Kou disappeared to and... Well, the cops are calling it murder, but we had been thinking that maybe Sato-senpai wandered in here through a door at school and ran into a shadow or something."

She carefully avoided Misaki's eye as she looked from Kozue back to Emi.

"But-- there's no proof of that, of course," she added hastily.

Kozue stopped, and thought, looking up at the tall golden woman twice, before she turned back to Kiriko and the rest of the 'in the bathroom' crew.

".... if there are monsters that attack you, why is it called Paradise?" Was the first thing out of her mouth, though. Since Kiriko had already dealt with the obvious bathroom question, Kozue's brain simply had to find another silly question to ask, and this one did the job well enough. But there were more and more intelligent questions waiting.

"So, uh, you have one... a Persona, I mean, Ikeda-san. Who else does?"

Kiriko opted not to answer the first question, mostly because she could not for the moment remember how it got that name. Was it from the rumour mill or something someone had said on the inside? Either way, it was a valid question.

"Everyone back there is a Persona-user," she explained, expression still a little grim. "We were actually just discussing what we were going to do about it... You know Ishinomori-san? He's gone 'missing'... sort of... and we think he's in this other world, somewhere. Some people want to go in and get him out, but I think he'll be fine if we leave him."
