The Shadowcave Pre-Dungeon Thread
Who: EVERYONE and S!Tom
What: Pre Dungeon Area
When: When they decide to go into the dungeon
Where: A big empty space
Why: I'm not rightly sure...

It should take everyone a little bit of time once they arrive in Paradise to figure out where Tom is. The usual massive structure or odd landscape that ends up serving as a dungeon is mysteriously absent.

It's not until they step outside of the building they were in that they realize there is no terrain, there is nothing outside of the building. It's just a large empty space. A large empty space, and what looks like a door.

When they approach the "door" they discover it is something else entirely. It appears to be a comic book, the size of a door, and it looks like this;

As soon as the party sees this comic book, they realize that they are different. Not just their clothes, but their weapons, even their physical bodies have changed to correspond to the image on the cover. While they are all still the same basic shape, they now appear as they would if in a comic book. In addition to this odd body change is a strange compulsion to explain to all present exactly how their "super" abilities work. The party also finds that they do in fact have super powers now. Anything they're "superhero" can do, with the exception of anything they could already do with their persona.

(For those that have yet to see what you're character is wearing; http://asylums.insanejournal.com/sweetcouch/15547.html)

If anyone touches the comic, it will quickly flip open. This may seem odd to some people, as the page turns from left to right. Beneath the cover is a large page, that has a small portrait of the heroes face, and name next to it down the margins. The words on the page are as follows;

“The Heroes Society of Earth: A group of the most powerful superheroes in the world, banding together despite their differences to defend the Earth from threats no single hero can withstand.

Previously:
Believing that part time teammate, and strategist; ShadowKnight guilty of a grievous betrayal, the team has tracked him down to his secret headquarters, intent on confronting their wayward companion, though what they intend to do once they find him is known only to them.

We join our heroes now, standing in front of Stately Sagaki Manner…”

Of course before you deal with all of that there the small matter of a shadow trying to kill you...

(Note that the shadow attack happens before you guys get comic booked)

And the gang choose memory #2

Memory: Date; 05/07/2007

Tom around age 11, and the a Japanese Man (the same as before) sit at a table, they appear to be in a kitchen, it’s night out and they are eating..

Young Tom sits up straight, he looks to the man in a way that could be described as hopeful puppy dog eyes. When he speaks, it’s in English.

Young Tom:”I… I hope you like it. I found the recipe when I went grocery shopping.”

The Man doesn’t look up form his food, he finishes eating, and doesn’t speak until his plate is clear. When he does it is in Japanese.

Man: “You are a citizen of Japan now. Speak Japanese.”

Young Tom slouches in his chair, eyes down cast. He speaks in Japanese.

Young Tom: “Yes Father.”

Without another word, the boy stands, and clears the table. He has to drag a box over to the front of the sink, to actually do the dishes. It seems that an excruciatingly long amount of time passes before either

Young Tom: “So… since we’re here…. Do we have any family in the country? I’d like to meet them.”

The Man’s head lowers.

Man: “Your mother’s sister lives here. Her name is Sarah, I have yet to inform her of our move.”
Young Tom: “It sounds like you don’t want us to talk to her.”
Man: “She is loud, and obnoxious. She speaks her mind, and does what she wants regardless of tradition, or respect for others. She’s so…. American.”
Young Tom: “Mother was American too Father. I’m half…”
Man: “Yes. I know.”

This revelation seems to make the Man almost growl.

Man: “You’re mother… was everything her sister is not. She was quiet, docile, and knew how to be a proper woman. Her sister… doesn’t. It will probably lead to her death one day. But even then she’ll probably complain and make demands until the end.”

The man seems to feel the conversation has ended. He stands up, and walks out of the room. A comment from Young Tom stops him at the door.

Young Tom: “Father?... Is…. Is it my fault that… that mom didn’t come with us to Japan?”

The man stands quietly for a few seconds, then finally answers.

Man: “…Yes, it was.”

He walks out of the room as the memory ends.

Tom, apparently age 13, walks through a school playground. He walks up to three Japanese boys, who turn to face. When Tom speaks it’s in Japanese. Though he still has a bit of an accent.

Tom: “Hello, I’m new to this school. My name’s Tom… er… Sagaki, Tom.”
Ichiro: “I amTakahashi, Ichiro, This is Iwate, Ryota, and Nagano, Hajime.”

Tom smiles.

Tom: “It is a pleasure to meet you Ichiro.”

Ichiro’s face drops from neutral, to irritated.

Ichiro: “Hey! You don’t know me well enough to use my first name.”
Tom: “Well… I… “
Hajime: “Course he wouldn’t know how to use honorifics. He’s nothing but an American barbarian. Did you see him at lunch? He couldn’t even hold his chopsticks properly.”
Ryota:”Yeah, and look at his eyes. Cold and dead, like a fish.”

All three boys laugh., as Ichiro steps closer. Tom looks flustered for a moment, and frustrated, but he takes a breath.

Tom: “I’m trying to learn all of the proper customs, it’s… it’s just taking me awhile.”
Ichiro: “Don’t. It’s a waste of your time and ours. No matter how hard you try, no matter what you learn, it’ll be pointless. You will always be Gaijin.”

Ichiro’s voice is the last thing they hear as the memory fades.

Ichiro: “You’ll always be an outcast.”

Tom at age 15 slips into a bedroom. It appears that he doesn’t want anyone to notice what he’s doing. Lying on the bed is an open suitcase. Tom contemplates it for a moment, and then reaches out and begins looking through it’s contents. It’s mostly clothes, but when Tom pulls back a flap he finds a gun sitting in the bag. Ir looks like a simple 9-millimeter pistol, gunmetal, with a black grip. Tom however, steps back like it had the power to shoot him.
It doesn’t take more then a second for a woman to enter the room, and flip the case closed. She’s got brown hair, and pale eyes, but she looks at Tom with a smile.

Woman: “Hey kiddo. Probably not a good idea to go rooting around in another persons things.”
Tom: “You’re… you’re my aunt right? My father didn’t seem to want you here.”
Sarah; “Well that’s tough luck for him. We’re family, right? And I wasn’t gonna let his opinions keep me from seeing my sister’s only son.”
Tom: “I didn’t think that that’s how family actually behaved.”
Aunt Sarah:“You either watch too much TV or not enough of it.”

Tom gave the woman a look, but took a second before he said anything.

Tom: “So… how come you… have a gun. Isn’t that kind of illegal?”
Aunt Sarah:“Oh… Tom… the laws are there for everybody, but they don’t always represent the right choice. Sometimes the right choice isn’t the easy one, or the most obvious one, and very rarely is it the most popular one. Everybody needs to find their own path.
My path just happens to cross with the paths of people who are… less then altruistic, and I need to protect myself.
Speaking of bad people, I heard you were having trouble with some kids at school.”
Tom: “I don’t care so much about it when they pick on me, but some of them… some of them are doing bad things, and I don’t know what to do about it.”
Aunt Sarah:“Did you talk to your teachers?”
Tom “I did, I don’t think they’re gonna do anything.”

The memory begins to fade, and soon all that’s left are Sarah’s words;
Aunt Sarah:“Then you may have to do what you think is right. Even if the other people get mad at you for it.”

Tom, appearing to be age 15, steps out of a locker room. He walks out into the school gym, rows of folding chairs sit set up for the schools recent assembly. Nearby are two larger, older boys, and one smaller one.

Smaller boy: “I don’t think so… my mom says that stuff’ll kill you.”
Older boy 1: “You know what else will kill ya? My friend here if you don’t give us the money.”

The second older boy stepped forward, and cracked his knuckles. Tom took a step over to the three, his fist and jaw clenched. It appeared though, that it wouldn’t be helpful. The smaller boy handed over roughly the equivalent of $20, and ran out of the gym. The first older boy turned to his friend.

Older boy 1: “See that? With the intimidation we don’t even need to give them the drugs. It’s like... pure profit.”
Tom: “You aren’t just selling them drugs to get them high. You’re forcing these kids to by hard stuff, stuff that can kill them? And you’re forcing them to by it.”
Older boy 2: “You don’t like the way we do business Gaijin-san?”
Tom: “If they wanna get high on their own that’s their choice, that doesn’t bother me. But you’re making it so they don’t have a choice in the matter. This could kill them! And you don’t care?”
Older boy 1 “Of course we care! If they die then we can’t get their money anymore!”

Tom looked away

Tom: “Someone should stop you.”
Older boy 1: “Yeah. Coach told us what you said to him. You know, he laughed when he talked about you. He laughed.”
Older boy 2:”Heh, yeah, and you know why? Because you’re just the crazy foreign kid, Gaijin-san. Nobody cares what you have to say. Where as us? We win games! We get attention focused on the school. And so we get to do whatever we want, and no one’s even gonna try and stop us. So you know what Gaijin-san? You’re just gonna have to deal with it.”

Something seemed to click in Tom’s eyes at that moment. His brow furrowed, and his fists unclenched. It’s like all the things that he’d been holding inside bubbled to the surface. All the sound in the memory cuts out, for that one second.

Tom: “You’re right. No one’s even going to try and stop you. And I am just going to have to deal with it.”

Tom’s hand grabbed one of the nearby folding chairs, and he slammed it into the second Older boy. The boy fell backwards, and before he could react, Tom turned on the first Older boy. He tossed the chair aside, and charged into him. And that’s where the memory ends.

Tom walks out of his fathers house, to find his Aunt standing in front of the house. She stands in front of a sleek black sports car.

Aunt Sarah:“Nice isn’t it? You’re just about sixteen now, and that’s when I got my first car.
Tom: “Aunt Sarah, I can’t drive until I’m 18 years old.”
Aunt Sarah: “That’s silly. In the US you’d be allowed to drive when you turned 16.”
Tom: “I’m pretty sure they changed that to 18 five or six years ago too.”
Aunt Sarah: “Tom, you need to live a little. Think of it! How would all your friends react when you showed up to your birthday party driving this.”
Tom: “I’ve never had a birthday party. Well… except for that one time when all the kids got together to sing “happy birthday.” Just… instead of happy birthday they chanted “Gaijin Go Home!”
And since I got kicked out of the last school I was in, I don’t think Father will be spending any money on presents for me.”
Aunt Sarah: “At least let me teach you how to drive. It’ll be good for when you can do it legally.”

Tom shrugs, and then nods. He walks forward, to stand next to his aunt. This is when his father appears. Giving the woman a harsh stare.

Shin: “What are you doing here Sarah?”
Sarah: “I came to give Tom his birthday present.”
Shin: “I have yet to see him do anything worthy of receiving presents.”
Sarah: “How about the fact that it’s his birthday? My god Shin, the boy could cure cancer and you still wouldn’t think he’d be worthy of getting presents.”
Shin: “Perhaps you haven’t heard of the boys recent antics. The ones that got him thrown out of school? Or maybe it’s that you approve of them. His actions have your influence written all over them.”
Tom: “Father… please… those actions were the result of my own descions.”

Shin held up a hand and looked to Tom. He did not raise his voice when he spoke.

Shin: “You’re input is unwanted. This does not concern you.”
Sarah: “How can you say a conversation about him doesn’t concern him?”
Shin: “Enough. I’ll take you’re present and hold onto it, until he is of a legal age to drive.”
Sarah: “And will he get it back when he’s 18?”
Shin: “At that point he will be an adult.”

The memory fades out, with Shin’s final comment.

Shin: “His actions will no longer be my concern.”

Tom at age 16 sits hiding on the landing. Next to him are the stairs leading down to the living room, where his Aunt and Father sit talking.

Aunt Sarah: “It’s called Nanakamado Elevator School. It’s actually right here in Iburi.”

Shin: “And the cost?”

Aunt Sarah: “You can afford it pretty easily. Considering you won’t have to pay for meals and dorm fees.”

Shin: “There are dorms for him to stay in?”

Aunt Sarah: “There are… but Shin… the school is ten minutes down the road by car. You could drive him there on the way to work. It might even give you two a chance to… talk for a change.”

Shin: “He can stay in the dorms.”

Aunt Sarah: “He’s your son! Anne sent you away because of how much you were neglecting him, and this is… everything she didn’t want.”

Shin’s face contorts with anger, and he stands. Though he never does raise his voice.

Shin: “Don’t you dare talk to me about what my wife wanted. I know the reason she gave for… for… I know what she wanted. And am I not taking care of the boy? I’m seeing to his education. I give him money when he asks for it. He is taken care of.”

Sarah: “And what about family? Don’t you think he needs someone who actually cares about him, and will be there for him?”

Shin: “Aren’t you doing a good enough job of that? Or do you think you might be incapable, given the other company you keep?”

At this comment, Sarah took a step back.

Shin: “Yes Sarah, I know that your corruption is more then just your blood and your attitude.”

After that comment though, Sarah scowled

Sarah: “This isn’t about me. This is about you and Thomas. This may be you’re last chance to connect with him, at all. Are you really so determined to avoid caring that you would effectively throw your own son out of your house?”

Shin stared at Sarah. The memory begins to fade as he speaks his final words.

Shin: “He will live in the dorms.”
