The Shadowcave Pre-Dungeon Thread
Who: EVERYONE and S!Tom
What: Pre Dungeon Area
When: When they decide to go into the dungeon
Where: A big empty space
Why: I'm not rightly sure...

It should take everyone a little bit of time once they arrive in Paradise to figure out where Tom is. The usual massive structure or odd landscape that ends up serving as a dungeon is mysteriously absent.

It's not until they step outside of the building they were in that they realize there is no terrain, there is nothing outside of the building. It's just a large empty space. A large empty space, and what looks like a door.

When they approach the "door" they discover it is something else entirely. It appears to be a comic book, the size of a door, and it looks like this;

As soon as the party sees this comic book, they realize that they are different. Not just their clothes, but their weapons, even their physical bodies have changed to correspond to the image on the cover. While they are all still the same basic shape, they now appear as they would if in a comic book. In addition to this odd body change is a strange compulsion to explain to all present exactly how their "super" abilities work. The party also finds that they do in fact have super powers now. Anything they're "superhero" can do, with the exception of anything they could already do with their persona.

If anyone touches the comic, it will quickly flip open. This may seem odd to some people, as the page turns from left to right. Beneath the cover is a large page, that has a small portrait of the heroes face, and name next to it down the margins. The words on the page are as follows;

“The Heroes Society of Earth: A group of the most powerful superheroes in the world, banding together despite their differences to defend the Earth from threats no single hero can withstand.

Previously:
Believing that part time teammate, and strategist; ShadowKnight guilty of a grievous betrayal, the team has tracked him down to his secret headquarters, intent on confronting their wayward companion, though what they intend to do once they find him is known only to them.

We join our heroes now, standing in front of Stately Sagaki Manner…”

Of course before you deal with all of that there the small matter of a shadow trying to kill you...

(Note that the shadow attack happens before you guys get comic booked)

The 'good health' pendant around Misaki's neck begins to heat up. Slowly at first, then quicker as it becomes painful to wear until it burns through the string and falls to the floor.

As it does, it snaps. Noxious black smoke and thick black liquid begin to flow out of the broken charm, far more than could reasonably be inside it. Until it is a mass larger than even the group's tallest members and a mask rises to the surface. When the smoke finally clears, the shadow is already charging!

	Kanaye tried to cover Maeko, Toru, and Kozue, all at the same time. He did this by grabbing them and bodily shoving them behind him. He looked ready for action, but didn't actually DO anything. He has no plans to unless it attempts to attack him or one of his "people that I must protect" group. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Toshimi blinked at Misaki's pendant a couple times. So whoever had given them to her and Noriko also gave one to Misaki? She ponders this for a moment before realizing that if the pendants were secretly shadows, it meant that they actually came from someone with something against all of them, contrary to what she had previously assumed.

This fact would probably visibly distress most people. Naturally, Toshi was an exception. She smiled pleasantly at the charging shadow and noted, "Lucky I left mine at the dorms, huh?" She serenely took out her cell phone and a throwing knife, in case she did have to fight.

	Maeko peered out from behind Kanaye, wondering if he'd remembered anything about the 'take your of yourself, too' discussion. Deciding he probably hadn't, she decided to take the matter into her own hands and called for the witch to rakukaja him. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Kanaye was still kind of suspicious, given the 'SHADOW OUT OF NOWHERE'. He was kind of creeped out by the view of nothing, and he cautiously walked over to the door. And then he noticed it WASN'T a door, and, in fact, it was a comic book. Kanaye nearly laughed at it. He didn't hate western comics, but he preferred manga. The costumes were RIDICULOUS...though, admittedly, the comic book's versions of Maeko and Kozue WERE kind of hot...

And then he had the strangest urge to talk... "I, Lightning Bolt," Kanaye said, wondering what the hell was coming out of his mouth, "can run really fast and can use electricity powers. I run SO fast, physics can't catch up to me, which is why I break it's laws all the time!"

Upon noticing his new outfit, Kanaye whistled appreciatively. "Damn, I look good in this..." He looked towards his girlfriend, best friend, and new friend, and promptly shut up. How could he put this without sounding like a letch? Hmm... "Maeko-chan, you look excellent!" He didn't know how to respond to her new-found curves. "Kozue-san, you look nice. And Toru-kun, man! That is awesome!"

Renju was entirely unfamiliar with Western comics, ~~having read only manga,~~ so the appearance of the 'door' was rather bizarre to her. She knew Western books read left to right, of course, but none of this was making any sense so far...

Even if she were more familiar with them, though, it was unlikely she'd appreciate the sudden changes any more. The costume, she had to admit, was relatively tasteful, particularly considering what some of the others had to deal with, and the sudden martial arts knowledge was something she wasn't about to complain about (though it was a bit of a shock--this was the sort of thing Paradise was capable of?).

The changes to her figure, however... To say that she was not particularly pleased about them would be an understatement. She considered herself fortunate that Paradise helped her adjust to the sudden... weight on her front, but that didn't make her any more comfortable with any of it. Nor with any of the reasons for it that leapt to mind--but that she shoved to the back of her mind. Rescuing now, thinking about it ~~never~~ later.

Misaki instantly felt embaressed seeing the chest size of her costume. She knew who her character was and that the sex appeal was part of the whole thing, but she was supposed to be a strong and sure female figure that could take a lot of stuff. Still, even her costumes for work weren't this revealing.

The fact that she could float up was a plus at least, but she was more worried about flashing anyone in the costume. She looked around and turned to the nearest person, that being Maeko, and said in a sweet but excited voice.

"Where ever there is Hope in the face of Great Danger, or a chance for Cheer where there is Dispare, you know that Amazing girl is there to give a Boost of Joy in the hearts of those that carry darkness forward," Misaki covered her mouth and blushed deeply. "This costume is amazing isn't it! And so is everyone elses it seems."

Kozue had been scrutinizing the ominous heading on the comic book with a sinking feeling growing in her stomach, but Kanaye's sudden and completely unprompted exposition made her look away. She nearly did a double-take; not only was she suddenly deeply confused as to who this 'Lightning Bolt' was, but… what in the universe was Satou wearing? She gaped.

And started staring around at everyone else, who looked… just like the versions of the team on the book cover. They were… glowing, or robots, or really tall, or seemed to have wings, or were wearing spandex, and were universally masked. The realization that maybe she'd changed too was not long in coming after that. She looked down, patted her leg, and found fishnets. Black… something a bit like leather? Making up the body suit. A distinct lack of pants. And her… were her breasts bigger? She flushed slightly beneath her domino mask.

"I—I guess we should have expected costumes, but… Well, these are kind of cool."

But was there a mirror anywhere around here? She felt a sudden need to find out how she looked; if this actually flattered her. If her chest actually had grown because of Paradise Clothing Magic.

Kanaye wasn't the only one who was not sure how to react to Maeko's sudden curves. She was at least glad they were better covered than some of the other team members. The sudden knowledge of how to fight seemed inconsistant and patched together but it was better than what she was used to.

She pulled the cape around her and clenched it closed tightly.

"...what kind of- what." Maeko had no idea how to respond to this. Was Tom really this childish or did he just have a thing for spandex?

And the gang choose memory #2

Memory: Date; 05/07/2007

Tom around age 11, and the a Japanese Man (the same as before) sit at a table, they appear to be in a kitchen, it’s night out and they are eating..

Young Tom sits up straight, he looks to the man in a way that could be described as hopeful puppy dog eyes. When he speaks, it’s in English.

Young Tom:”I… I hope you like it. I found the recipe when I went grocery shopping.”

The Man doesn’t look up form his food, he finishes eating, and doesn’t speak until his plate is clear. When he does it is in Japanese.

Man: “You are a citizen of Japan now. Speak Japanese.”

Young Tom slouches in his chair, eyes down cast. He speaks in Japanese.

Young Tom: “Yes Father.”

Without another word, the boy stands, and clears the table. He has to drag a box over to the front of the sink, to actually do the dishes. It seems that an excruciatingly long amount of time passes before either

Young Tom: “So… since we’re here…. Do we have any family in the country? I’d like to meet them.”

The Man’s head lowers.

Man: “Your mother’s sister lives here. Her name is Sarah, I have yet to inform her of our move.”
Young Tom: “It sounds like you don’t want us to talk to her.”
Man: “She is loud, and obnoxious. She speaks her mind, and does what she wants regardless of tradition, or respect for others. She’s so…. American.”
Young Tom: “Mother was American too Father. I’m half…”
Man: “Yes. I know.”

This revelation seems to make the Man almost growl.

Man: “You’re mother… was everything her sister is not. She was quiet, docile, and knew how to be a proper woman. Her sister… doesn’t. It will probably lead to her death one day. But even then she’ll probably complain and make demands until the end.”

The man seems to feel the conversation has ended. He stands up, and walks out of the room. A comment from Young Tom stops him at the door.

Young Tom: “Father?... Is…. Is it my fault that… that mom didn’t come with us to Japan?”

The man stands quietly for a few seconds, then finally answers.

Man: “…Yes, it was.”

He walks out of the room as the memory ends.

Memory: Date; 09/24/2009

Tom, apparently age 13, walks through a school playground. He walks up to three Japanese boys, who turn to face. When Tom speaks it’s in Japanese. Though he still has a bit of an accent.

Tom: “Hello, I’m new to this school. My name’s Tom… er… Sagaki, Tom.”
Ichiro: “I amTakahashi, Ichiro, This is Iwate, Ryota, and Nagano, Hajime.”

Tom smiles.

Tom: “It is a pleasure to meet you Ichiro.”

Ichiro’s face drops from neutral, to irritated.

Ichiro: “Hey! You don’t know me well enough to use my first name.”
Tom: “Well… I… “
Hajime: “Course he wouldn’t know how to use honorifics. He’s nothing but an American barbarian. Did you see him at lunch? He couldn’t even hold his chopsticks properly.”
Ryota:”Yeah, and look at his eyes. Cold and dead, like a fish.”

All three boys laugh., as Ichiro steps closer. Tom looks flustered for a moment, and frustrated, but he takes a breath.

Tom: “I’m trying to learn all of the proper customs, it’s… it’s just taking me awhile.”
Ichiro: “Don’t. It’s a waste of your time and ours. No matter how hard you try, no matter what you learn, it’ll be pointless. You will always be Gaijin.”

Ichiro’s voice is the last thing they hear as the memory fades.

Ichiro: “You’ll always be an outcast.”

Memory: Date; 01/04/2013

Tom appears to be in his fathers house. He’s looking around an empty bedroom with a mostly empty box in front of him. He stops packing and quietly heads down the stairs, searching for the noise.

In the kitchen he finds a Japanese man, dressed in all black, looking through the fridge.

Tom: “Who Are You?! What Are You Doing In My Father’s House?!”

The man jumps up suddenly. He looks at Tom, and pulls his jacket aside, revealing a black pistol in a shoulder holster. The gun almost looks personalized. Jet black with a white grip.

Man: “Whoa, easy there kid. You don’t want me to get all jumpy see. I’m looking for Thorton, Sarah. I know she hangs out here sometimes, so…”
Tom: “How did you even get in here?!”
Man: “Should probably tell your Father to get some better locks. You never know who might need to stop in. I didn’t want to bother knocking, since I know Thorton-san has… been avoiding me. And we need to talk.”
Tom: “She’s…. she is not here. I’m all… I’m all by myself.”
Man: “Well… that’s an interesting response. Shame though, we really do need to talk. Tell you what. Let her know that she and I need to discuss, or next time, things won’t be so pleasant, yeah?”

The memory fades, as Tom watches the man leave..

Memory: Date; 05/14/2013

Tom appears to be standing in Paradise, amongst a small portion of the investigation team. Kiriko, Kozue, Maeko, Kanaye, Keiichi, Toshi, Kou, and Reizo are all present. Tom looks moderately injured, and the others look like they’ve just finished a fight.
Kiriko crosses her arms, and looks irritated.

Kiriko: “Are we bringing the creepy guy with us?”
Tom: "I'm coming with you either way."
Kanaye:"Well, that answers that question."

At this, Kiriko sneered. Kou frowned, and pushed up his glasses. Suddenly a voice sounded from around the party (the ones watching, not the ones participating). It’s Shadowknight. The speech is sarcastic, and leaves little doubt as to whom the Shadow is speaking to.

Shadowknight:”Because they want you around so much! They had to save you! Save you. Do you know what that makes you to them? Co-dependant. Weak. Incapable of doing anything on your own.
Worthless.”

Kiriko: "Tch. Why? Go back home, you don't have any reason to be here."
Makeo: "...Would we have Satou-senpai with us if we didn't need all the help we could get?"
Kiriko: "Satou-senpai is annoying, not creepy. And not stupid enough to come in here on his own."
Kou:"Somebody should ask why he was able to come this far without help."

Shadowknight:”You see? I know, I know, deep down inside, in that darkest part of your heart, you were hoping that you’d find people who’d accept you. Maybe you wouldn’t seem so weird to a group of people who traipse off into a parallel dimension to save someone’s life.

Well, is it everything you hoped for?”

Keiichi, looks back and fourth between the group, and Tom.

Keiichi: "Who are you anyway?"
Kanaye "He's Sagaki Thomas. One of my classmates
for a moment the memory goes fuzzy, and then back to normal.,/i>

Tom: "I am. And to address earlier comments, I didn't come in on my own. I followed you."
Kanaye: "Which isn't creepy at all."
Toshi: "You...followed us?"
Tom: "Wanted to make sure you didn't die in here."

Shadowknight:”Oh god! What’s wrong with you! Don’t tell them you were worried about them! Do you want them to think you’re some kind of freak?!”

Kiriko appears to share some of the Shadow’s ire and scoffs. Kanaye, seems to disbelieve equally.

Kiriko: "Oh, how gracious of you. Without you, we'd be toast!"
Kanaye: "Because a group of, what, 10, could handle more then 1 person?"

Kozue: "Wait…You followed us in front of us?"
Kou: “Yes, if you followed us, how come you were here before us?
Tom: "When it looked like you weren't going to need my help, I moved on to save the kid."
Kiriko: "Kid? How do you know about him?"
Tom: "Big sign at the start, says save the otaku."

Shadowknight: ”I’m pretty sure it’s too late to convince them that you agree with their reasons for coming here, whatever those are. They’re on to you, and they’ll hate you for it. They’ll always be looking over their shoulder, wondering if you can be trusted to hold your own, to not burst into tears at the first sign of trouble.”

Keiichi: "So…that meant he waltzed past the rocks on the first floor and managed to wander right into the middle of a bunch of those...things."
Tom "I didn't wander into, they were in the way, I was going to move them. The rules in this place are… strange, I didn’t think it’d let me bypass them with stealth.”

Shadowknight: “Smooooth.”

Maeko: "...your plan b didn't seem so great either."
Tom: "I could have taken them. If I hadn't been previously wounded outside of this place I would have finished them sooner."

Shadowknight: “Yeah, I think it’s far too late for justifications. This group, they see you for what you are. Weak, and pathetic, unable to do anything on your own. I would not be the least bit surprised if they decided to leave you here, instead of carrying your dead weight around.”

Toshi: "Well, either way...if there are no shadows left, we should move on."

Kiriko sighed, and looked to Keiichi.

Kiriko: "I don't like him, but I guess we can't leave him here..?"
Maeko: "We don't want anyone in here alone. If we don't take him with us we have to make sure he gets back safe."
Reizo: "I'm not carrying him."
Kanaye: "Don't want a murder on our conscience."
Kiriko: Shirai might."
Kou: "Hmph. We've wasted enough time here. Toshimi-san is right. He also needs to keep this to himself."

Shadowknight: “So they won’t leave you to die at least, but they don’t want you here. You wanna try one more time to convince them you don’t care? Lest they change their minds and abandon you.”

Kanaye: "If you're gonna keep with us, walk with yourself."
Kirko: "We should ask him."
Keiichi: "No, we can't,"

Shadowknight: “Last chance to plead your case. Convince them you won’t be a burden, or get abandoned, again.”

Keiichi:"Come along with us, I suppose. Stay with the group."
Tom: He rolls his eyes. "I don't need your help children. But I can help you."

Here the memory gets fuzzy for a second once again.

Kanaye: "I'm older then you."

The memory begins to fade out, as the others do, with a parting line from Tom as he walks ahead of the group.

Tom: "Try to keep up."

Memory: Date; 02/04/2013

Aunt Sarah stands in the large room of the house. Standing before her is the same man from the earlier memory, dressed in all black. He holds a gunmetal grey pistol with the black in his hand,.

Aunt Sarah: “What are you doing here?”
Man: “Like you don’t know. You owe my employer a great deal of money. And if you’ve been avoiding our calls, our messages, it seems… suspicious. And now we hear that you intend to leave the country.”
Aunt Sarah: “Look… I’ll do whatever you want… I’ll pay… just… please…”
Man: “It’s too late for that now. Turn around.”

Sarah turned slowly.

Aunt Sarah: “I can get you the money… you don’t have to do this, your boss will get paid.”
Man: “You will, but only because we’ve made arrangements for your money to come to us, as soon as you’re dead. Goodbye Sarah.”

She shut her eyes, as the man pulled the trigger. A loud bang, a bright flash and the woman fell to the floor.

Aunt Sarah stands in the large room of the house. She seems shaken, upset, concerned. Certainly not the same person the party had seen in earlier memories. Tom stands before her with his arms crossed.

Tom: “I’ve studied enough to see the clues, The time it had to have happened at. Honestly I wouldn’t have figured it out if I hadn’t lived here but since I do…
Aunt Sarah, why was there a large pool of blood in my father’s living room?”
Aunt Sarah: “I... I owed money, and he came to the house. He came to my families house. I found out he threatened you and I…
I just wanted to scare him off. I threatened him with the gun and… and he said I’d never use it. He attacked and I…”

Sarah looked at Tom, with almost hollow, sad eyes.

Aunt Sarah: “God… Tom I shot a man. I killed somebody. I got the body taken care of, and I cleaned everything up and now… oh… if you figured it out… What are you going to do?”

Tom gave her that hard stare he usually had when arguing for blind justice, and then let out a breath, and looked away.

Tom: “Nothing. I’m going to keep your secret. Because, well… like you said, we’re family. That’s how it works right?”

Sarah looked shocked for a moment.

Aunt Sarah: “Tom… I… I really can’t ask you to do that. If you cover for me it’ll get us both in trouble. I need to take responsibility for what I’ve done.”

Now it was Tom’s turn to looked shocked. He shook his head.

Tom: “But we’re family… Aunt Sarah, you’re… you’re all I have, you know my father doesn’t care, Everyone else in this country thinks I’m insane, or an outcast… you can’t… you can’t leave me.”

Sarah let out a sigh and put a hand on Tom’s shoulder.

Aunt Sarah: “Tom… there are more important things then what we want. And sometimes… sometimes we have to make hard choices. You remember what I told you the first day we met? Sometimes we have to make the right choices, even if they aren’t the most popular ones. We’ll see how things go, but I can’t just let this.”
Tom: “So you have to leave? And I’ll… be by myself again.”
Aunt Sarah: “I have to do what’s right Tom. We all do. And you’re young.”

After the bossfight

the Shadowknight Monster thing collapsed, the girl had vanished, and it returned to it's shadow state. Along with this, the restraints holding Tom also snapped, and he too, fell to the floor, in a mirror image of his shadow.

It was the shadow who stood first.

"This isn't over yet! Shadowknight always wins! I've saved my strongest attacks for this, and you can't stop it!"

The shadow raised his arm ready for his next attack, but a hand stopped it mid swing.
Tom had dragged himself up from the floor, and now stood between the shadow and the party.

"I'm not weak. It was weakness to be so afraid of losing the people I cared about, that I went out of my way to drive them off in the first place.
But that ends now."

Tom's hand slipped from the shadows arm and he took two steps back toward the group.

"You were me. You aren't anymore."

His face became awash with determination. He squared his shoulders, and glared at the shadow.

"Now, you leave my friends alone."

The shadow stopped, sneered slightly, and stood up straight himself. The "image" of Shadowknight cracked, and then shattered like glass. it fell to the ground, but never reached there, fading as it fell. Standing in place of the shadow was Tom's persona, who still had an uncanny resemblance to Shadowknight, though now with slightly brighter colors.
Tom himself turned back toward the group, he wiped his hand across his face, though to clear away blood and dirt, or for another reason is anyones guess.

"H-hi guys. I'm sorry I never told you this before... but..."

Tom closed his eyes and sucked in a breath.

"... I wanna be on the team."
