Noodle Alley is a familiar place to all but the most shut-in of Nanakamado students, and so is the cold lump of dread that settles into their stomach at the thought of Reizo Shirai.

Today, the normally bustling Noodle Alley toils under a washed out stretch of sky, the clients' usual vigor and mirth curtailed by the news of the most recent death and the gang and youth violence that has exploded in the area. Most of the diners wear strained smiles when they joke and laugh, but here and there the crowds are peppered with faces set in grim determination, shoulders hunched and posture tense as they soldier through their meals.

Worst amongst them are the ex-Nanakamado students who know just who’s responsible for the recent savagery and that once he is caught there will be no just penalty for him. The students, most of them paired off into two or threes, sometimes glance up at the passing group, curiosity and confusion breaking through into their miserable and gloomy stares before they turn back to their food.

The looks they get when they arrive at the mouth of the alley from the customers are severe enough to make up for sudden dearth of people. One or two even manage a weak, dispassionate warning to “get away from there” as the group disappears into the alley.

The alley itself is of no real importance. Bags of trash lean despondently against buildings, and the hard scrubbed ground itself is littered with cigarette butts and other miscellaneous bits of rubbish. Scraps of plastic skitter across the ground when the wind catches them, and a discarded snack bag crinkles and snaps against the tangle of sickly weeds it’s caught against.

Behind them the somber sounds of a fearful Noodle Alley peter away as they walk deeper into the alley, and before long die away completely, leaving them in a quiet only broken up by their own conversation and the gentle buzz of the city. The silence is heavy with disquiet when it settles in, full of the fear and tension felt by anyone who knows they are entering the bad part of the town, and it’s punctuated by the signs of struggle. A trashcan lays on its side, its meager contents half spilled out beside it, bent and dented. A switchblade, the blade glittering sharp and deadly even in the gloomy light of the alley lays not far from it, it’s tip red with fresh blood.

From up ahead a pained yell echoes and rebounds down the alley, and there’s a snap of wood breaking followed by several fresh shouts, ranging from angry to scared to hurt.

For his own reasons, Toru had brought himself to the area beyond Noodle Alley. Loyalty to Kiriko? A belief that if the strongest fell, the others would soon follow? Lingering emotions from an earlier time in the year? It hardly mattered- he knew the epicenter of violence was here, and this was a region where Reizo frequented.

There was little chance the others would coordinate with him, the way things were.

He was an odd fit for the place, too. The sheltered, weak, fragile being looked as though he had blown into the alleys by mistake, carried on the autumn wind with the rest of the rubbish. No delinquent or regular of the streets. Just a kid whose serious attitude about a world that should not exist had begun to bleed into the world he tried to ignore.

Then the noise came, and he ran. A prey animal in the predator's world, it was the only thing he could do in the face of real danger. He had no idea where to go, where to avoid, only that he had to keep himself alive and he had to help save Reizo. Dark browns and greys, bags of trash, wide-eyed and huddled denizens of the district- they all rushed past Toru in his suddenly terrified dash.

It carried him right into Kouchisei. Though he saw the familiar back and dimly registered it as potentially an ally, he could not stop. Momentum and terror sent him crashing into the older boy's back.

"Oubai! S-sorry!"

Seiko had been following close to Oubai, she hadn't been involved in this side of Iburi in the past, however her life a year or so ago had brought her closer to it rumours and glimpses. She was aware Oubai wasn't exactly much of a defense in the event of danger, but she'd rather have something between her and whatever they might run into.

She was there simply because she knew she owed Reizo, even if it was only for what he had had to endure in her dungeon, hats and glitter domes aside, just having to go through Paradise to save her was enough for her to feel she had to pay him back. She was also reminded of fighting with him against Toshimi's shadow, with Oubai knocked out and Kiriko incapacitated she had been very glad of his presence. Maybe he wasn'r her friend, or a good person, but that didn't matter, he was one of them

The noise stopped her short and she struggled to hold in an exclamation of surprise, her hand drifted to rest on her bag. Bundled deep in there were here knives, just in case this led to a chase into Paradise or at worst self defense out here.

She avoided the incoming Toru, blinking a little at his sudden arrival but trying to focus on what was at hand. "I guess that this could be... Well do you think it is him? Down there?" She indicated towards the source of the noise.

Subtlety not being Kai's specialty, he was currently huddled near Seiko and clenching his trembling hands into fists. The atmosphere was making him nervous, to say the least, and when Toru came barreling into Kou, he lost any semblance of confidence and jumped back with an undignified yelp.

Once it registered that it was, in fact, just an equally startled teammate, Kai released his tense grip on his phone and made himself busy trying to look calm again to cover for his embarrassment that he'd made a scene.

It was times like these that he prided himself on his better qualities - namely, his sense of basic human decency that had lead him to the conclusion that despite what horrors were awaiting them should Reizo have gone Shadow, Reizo was still a person, and therefore deserved to be saved just like the rest of them. That was the only reason he was here right now.

He frowned at the thought of actually having to go down and explore the source of the noise, but if it was the only way... "W-We won't know until we go down there, I suppose," he said, voice shakier than he would have liked.

Kai tilted his head in the general direction, indicating that maybe they should head down there. "Shall we?"

Not that he was going to make the first move himself. That was more than he was capable of at the moment.

Toru quickly backed away from Kou, putting several feet between the two of them. He then made a pained face upon noticing Seiko, and thus promptly turned his attention to Kai. That was a more acceptable alternative. Everyone looked so worried, if not scared. They were turning into a little herd here, using numbers against the wolves that lurked in the darkness of Iburi's worst alleys.

"I suppose that's the only way. I... don't look forward to it, b-but... we can't leave Reizo be like this." Gulp and nod. "I-if we all go together, it'll be better. Safety in numbers and all."

After all, a powerful enemy with single-target attacks would take longer to decimate the party if there were more of them. Not a cheery thought, but an accurate one.

"L-let's go, guys." Toru set one foot after the other at a glacial pace. Though he knew they had to move, he was still half-paralyzed by the prospect of what lay beyond.

And thus began the walk forward to the source of the commotion.

The two things Kouchisei felt came almost instantaneously; first there was the impact, and then his own weight pulling him forward. He stumbled, and when he regained his footing awkwardly turned around, as if unsure how his body worked. He glanced around, at the familiar faces and the unfamiliar ones in the distance, and his gaze fell on Toru standing what he thought was innocent and nearby.

Maybe he didn't want to be here, but the thought of Shirai knowing he'd helped save his life might stop him being so aggressive. He doubted this, since Shirai wasn't a nice person to begin with.

"You should watch where you're going," he said, and the way he looked at the others made it look like he was addressing them too.

Isao didn't really have a reason for being there. He was mainly going along for the same reason he had gone on any of the other investigations. He had the ability to help and he had nothing better to do. Something was going to be different about this though. His views of the person in question over the past few times dealing with this stuff was basically... Well, he didn't have views. Reizo was just the person that stood around making gay jokes in between proving that he was really good at beating stuff up. After reading the assumptions that he was in that world, Isao was just running through the possible situations in his head at this point. He could have easily assumed that gay jokes and beating stuff up would be involved, but that was about all he had.

There may have been a tiny bit of morbid curiosity, but he just didn't have any strong opinions one way or the other. Still, he had quietly followed the others into the alley. There wasn't much to say about it, it was just... creepy? Maybe that was the word for it, but he kept a calm expression on his face. It certainly wasn't the sort of place where he would spend his free time, but he wasn't going to let it get to him. Or he was at least going to try to stay level-headed about the whole thing. Everyone else was being jumpy enough and he didn't need to add to that.

"Just keep going," he replied to Kou. They did need to watch where they were going, but he needed to follow the rule himself, too. It was in everyone's best interest to keep aware of their surroundings... or something like that. Isao looked over the area and sighed.

Misaki had her hands in the pockets of her jacket, her thumb pressing upon the sharpoint of the fans that lay at the ready at the bottoms. She wanted to feel the sharpness to think of that rather then the creepy nature of the alley. Looking around she wondered exactly why it was that people decided to follow such a path. The reason she was there, mostly because of thoughts of the few moments she'd seen a kinder rezio.

Walking behind Isao she was thinking about things that were going on, wondering if this was going to be a good thing. She slowed and froze when she heard the scream and the sound of something breaking. She wanted to run, but which way to go she wasn't sure. At one time she would have run right into the danger, but things had changed for her, she didn't want to run right into the thick of things, she wanted to go to a safe place and not have to fight.

Pushing her thumb hard on the edge of the fan she swallowed some and relaxed sightly hearing Isao's voice and nodded slowly in agreement. "Iaso-sempai is right, we can't just stand here, Shirai-san might be....well he could be hurt."
