Noodle Alley is a familiar place to all but the most shut-in of Nanakamado students, and so is the cold lump of dread that settles into their stomach at the thought of Reizo Shirai.

Today, the normally bustling Noodle Alley toils under a washed out stretch of sky, the clients' usual vigor and mirth curtailed by the news of the most recent death and the gang and youth violence that has exploded in the area. Most of the diners wear strained smiles when they joke and laugh, but here and there the crowds are peppered with faces set in grim determination, shoulders hunched and posture tense as they soldier through their meals.

Worst amongst them are the ex-Nanakamado students who know just who’s responsible for the recent savagery and that once he is caught there will be no just penalty for him. The students, most of them paired off into two or threes, sometimes glance up at the passing group, curiosity and confusion breaking through into their miserable and gloomy stares before they turn back to their food.

The looks they get when they arrive at the mouth of the alley from the customers are severe enough to make up for sudden dearth of people. One or two even manage a weak, dispassionate warning to “get away from there” as the group disappears into the alley.

The alley itself is of no real importance. Bags of trash lean despondently against buildings, and the hard scrubbed ground itself is littered with cigarette butts and other miscellaneous bits of rubbish. Scraps of plastic skitter across the ground when the wind catches them, and a discarded snack bag crinkles and snaps against the tangle of sickly weeds it’s caught against.

Behind them the somber sounds of a fearful Noodle Alley peter away as they walk deeper into the alley, and before long die away completely, leaving them in a quiet only broken up by their own conversation and the gentle buzz of the city. The silence is heavy with disquiet when it settles in, full of the fear and tension felt by anyone who knows they are entering the bad part of the town, and it’s punctuated by the signs of struggle. A trashcan lays on its side, its meager contents half spilled out beside it, bent and dented. A switchblade, the blade glittering sharp and deadly even in the gloomy light of the alley lays not far from it, it’s tip red with fresh blood.

From up ahead a pained yell echoes and rebounds down the alley, and there’s a snap of wood breaking followed by several fresh shouts, ranging from angry to scared to hurt.

Kouchisei understood this was not a place he came to, but it was nevertheless surprising for him to witness its state of despondance and bone-numbing fear. The thought of finding Shirai and beating him to within an inch of his life was a sustaining one, though he was not physically strong. Yet that overwheling urge carried him along the narrow corridor.

He had also never been into this part of town before. It was dirty, dark, and permeated with the fear he had come to associate with that boy.

Suddenly he halted and looked around. The noises - yells, snapping and banging - all seemed to come at once.

"What was that?"

For his own reasons, Toru had brought himself to the area beyond Noodle Alley. Loyalty to Kiriko? A belief that if the strongest fell, the others would soon follow? Lingering emotions from an earlier time in the year? It hardly mattered- he knew the epicenter of violence was here, and this was a region where Reizo frequented.

There was little chance the others would coordinate with him, the way things were.

He was an odd fit for the place, too. The sheltered, weak, fragile being looked as though he had blown into the alleys by mistake, carried on the autumn wind with the rest of the rubbish. No delinquent or regular of the streets. Just a kid whose serious attitude about a world that should not exist had begun to bleed into the world he tried to ignore.

Then the noise came, and he ran. A prey animal in the predator's world, it was the only thing he could do in the face of real danger. He had no idea where to go, where to avoid, only that he had to keep himself alive and he had to help save Reizo. Dark browns and greys, bags of trash, wide-eyed and huddled denizens of the district- they all rushed past Toru in his suddenly terrified dash.

It carried him right into Kouchisei. Though he saw the familiar back and dimly registered it as potentially an ally, he could not stop. Momentum and terror sent him crashing into the older boy's back.

"Oubai! S-sorry!"

Seiko had been following close to Oubai, she hadn't been involved in this side of Iburi in the past, however her life a year or so ago had brought her closer to it rumours and glimpses. She was aware Oubai wasn't exactly much of a defense in the event of danger, but she'd rather have something between her and whatever they might run into.

She was there simply because she knew she owed Reizo, even if it was only for what he had had to endure in her dungeon, hats and glitter domes aside, just having to go through Paradise to save her was enough for her to feel she had to pay him back. She was also reminded of fighting with him against Toshimi's shadow, with Oubai knocked out and Kiriko incapacitated she had been very glad of his presence. Maybe he wasn'r her friend, or a good person, but that didn't matter, he was one of them

The noise stopped her short and she struggled to hold in an exclamation of surprise, her hand drifted to rest on her bag. Bundled deep in there were here knives, just in case this led to a chase into Paradise or at worst self defense out here.

She avoided the incoming Toru, blinking a little at his sudden arrival but trying to focus on what was at hand. "I guess that this could be... Well do you think it is him? Down there?" She indicated towards the source of the noise.

Subtlety not being Kai's specialty, he was currently huddled near Seiko and clenching his trembling hands into fists. The atmosphere was making him nervous, to say the least, and when Toru came barreling into Kou, he lost any semblance of confidence and jumped back with an undignified yelp.

Once it registered that it was, in fact, just an equally startled teammate, Kai released his tense grip on his phone and made himself busy trying to look calm again to cover for his embarrassment that he'd made a scene.

It was times like these that he prided himself on his better qualities - namely, his sense of basic human decency that had lead him to the conclusion that despite what horrors were awaiting them should Reizo have gone Shadow, Reizo was still a person, and therefore deserved to be saved just like the rest of them. That was the only reason he was here right now.

He frowned at the thought of actually having to go down and explore the source of the noise, but if it was the only way... "W-We won't know until we go down there, I suppose," he said, voice shakier than he would have liked.

Kai tilted his head in the general direction, indicating that maybe they should head down there. "Shall we?"

Not that he was going to make the first move himself. That was more than he was capable of at the moment.

Toru quickly backed away from Kou, putting several feet between the two of them. He then made a pained face upon noticing Seiko, and thus promptly turned his attention to Kai. That was a more acceptable alternative. Everyone looked so worried, if not scared. They were turning into a little herd here, using numbers against the wolves that lurked in the darkness of Iburi's worst alleys.

"I suppose that's the only way. I... don't look forward to it, b-but... we can't leave Reizo be like this." Gulp and nod. "I-if we all go together, it'll be better. Safety in numbers and all."

After all, a powerful enemy with single-target attacks would take longer to decimate the party if there were more of them. Not a cheery thought, but an accurate one.

"L-let's go, guys." Toru set one foot after the other at a glacial pace. Though he knew they had to move, he was still half-paralyzed by the prospect of what lay beyond.

And thus began the walk forward to the source of the commotion.

The two things Kouchisei felt came almost instantaneously; first there was the impact, and then his own weight pulling him forward. He stumbled, and when he regained his footing awkwardly turned around, as if unsure how his body worked. He glanced around, at the familiar faces and the unfamiliar ones in the distance, and his gaze fell on Toru standing what he thought was innocent and nearby.

Maybe he didn't want to be here, but the thought of Shirai knowing he'd helped save his life might stop him being so aggressive. He doubted this, since Shirai wasn't a nice person to begin with.

"You should watch where you're going," he said, and the way he looked at the others made it look like he was addressing them too.

Isao didn't really have a reason for being there. He was mainly going along for the same reason he had gone on any of the other investigations. He had the ability to help and he had nothing better to do. Something was going to be different about this though. His views of the person in question over the past few times dealing with this stuff was basically... Well, he didn't have views. Reizo was just the person that stood around making gay jokes in between proving that he was really good at beating stuff up. After reading the assumptions that he was in that world, Isao was just running through the possible situations in his head at this point. He could have easily assumed that gay jokes and beating stuff up would be involved, but that was about all he had.

There may have been a tiny bit of morbid curiosity, but he just didn't have any strong opinions one way or the other. Still, he had quietly followed the others into the alley. There wasn't much to say about it, it was just... creepy? Maybe that was the word for it, but he kept a calm expression on his face. It certainly wasn't the sort of place where he would spend his free time, but he wasn't going to let it get to him. Or he was at least going to try to stay level-headed about the whole thing. Everyone else was being jumpy enough and he didn't need to add to that.

"Just keep going," he replied to Kou. They did need to watch where they were going, but he needed to follow the rule himself, too. It was in everyone's best interest to keep aware of their surroundings... or something like that. Isao looked over the area and sighed.

Misaki had her hands in the pockets of her jacket, her thumb pressing upon the sharpoint of the fans that lay at the ready at the bottoms. She wanted to feel the sharpness to think of that rather then the creepy nature of the alley. Looking around she wondered exactly why it was that people decided to follow such a path. The reason she was there, mostly because of thoughts of the few moments she'd seen a kinder rezio.

Walking behind Isao she was thinking about things that were going on, wondering if this was going to be a good thing. She slowed and froze when she heard the scream and the sound of something breaking. She wanted to run, but which way to go she wasn't sure. At one time she would have run right into the danger, but things had changed for her, she didn't want to run right into the thick of things, she wanted to go to a safe place and not have to fight.

Pushing her thumb hard on the edge of the fan she swallowed some and relaxed sightly hearing Isao's voice and nodded slowly in agreement. "Iaso-sempai is right, we can't just stand here, Shirai-san might be....well he could be hurt."

The commotion up the alley swelled, the angry shouts rising into a fearful and harsh crescendo, which climaxed in a sharp yelp of pain and another thunderous crack of wood breaking. The clamor died away then, growing dimmer with distance as its source retreated down the opposite side of the alley.

A looming silence took the noise’s place, deep and complete and oddly watchful. As they went further into the alley, closer towards the lot that was their destination, the silence took on the hushed and unnatural quality of a predator, as if something was waiting just out of sight for them around the corner into the lot. Something, likely, with huge teeth and cruelly hooked claws.

There were no monsters waiting for them in the lot, but perhaps the remnants of some. The trash that had littered the alley plagued the ground here as well, with an impressive collection of it stowed away in one corner, the bright and garish snack wrappers standing out against the dreary cityscape. Old cigarette butts were scattered throughout, most of them yellowed from age and rain. Tires and crates served as impromptu and crude furniture for whoever spent time here, and sprinkled around were other signs of life. A morbid monster of a toy lay on its side on one of the crates, nails sticking crazily up out of the bald baby doll skull and its huge crab pincer arm jacking it up in the air. A broken cell phone lay near the middle of the lot, the screen smashed and its bottom half laying near it, eviscerated badly. A chipped and bent knife was stuck deep into one of the boards of the fence, an oozing skull keychain looped over its handle and hanging from it. A magazine was nailed to another part of the fence, the centerfold hanging from it like a lewdly tattooed tongue.

Nothing out of place, really, for the hang out spot of a crude and violent group of teenage thugs. Even the fresh coat of blood standing out against the jagged edges of the broken bit of the fence and striping some of crates and tires nearby was normal - though perhaps not the amount of it.

Beyond the huge gap in the wall was the gloom and shadow of a towering warehouse, and beneath the awning lay a shape. Its cold and clear copper eyes burned out from the shadows of its face, and its tongue hung out from its mouth as it panted for breath. The huge hound watched the group curiously through the gap in the fence, and moved as if to stand, but let out a yelp when its legs buckled beneath it. A switchblade protruded from its hind quarters, and the failed movement sent a fresh surge of blood flowing down its leg. It was, at once, frightening and pathetic.

"A... wolf? No, a dog."

At the head of the pack, as it were, Toru had rushed in to the crude hideout as the sounds of violence faded. His careless feet sent old cigarette butts flying left and right into the makeshift furniture (as well as anybody unlucky enough to be running behind him.) Only when the piercing gaze of the beast in the darkness met his own eyes did he stop.

"I-it's... what's going on? I thought there were gang fights here, not giant dogs!" The boy's body was wracked by a shudder of primeval terror; the prey's physical warning against approaching danger. Somehow, though, he managed to stand his ground long enough to see it stumble and fall. This was no hunter in its prime, that much was obvious. The beast was wounded.

All Toru could do was crouch to get a better look through the fence.

If things had not been so serious, Kouchisei would have looked a lot more animated. He would be standing firm and confident. Here his expression was stone-faced, and now something had caught his eye his lips rose before that core-felt satisfaction was replaced by a chill. He wrung his hands. Something was hanging on the air and it felt wrong, he knew. This was a place he had to be but now and certainly afterwards it would be a place he shouldn't be at all.

His walk came to a stop at the sight of the blood matting the creature's fur. His mind began thinking about infection and transmission and gussed the distance he had from the animal. It looked like an Akita - and then with he remembered why they were here and decided lingering was probably not a good idea. He wanted to help it, but he also wasn't a veternarian.

He also preferred cats.

"We should call the shelter."

Kai took in the alley with wide eyes, and unconsciously moved closer to the team as they went further in. This scenery was completely foreign to the safe and warm spaces he'd inhabited for most of his life, and he didn't know how to process it all at once. His oh-so-attractive habit of biting his bottom lip when he was nervous was on full display here.

He stayed far back from the dog in the fence, and even the people investigating it. No rabies for him, nothankyou. And if it had done all of this, was it something they wanted to get near?

"Did it do all of this?" he said, looking around. "...Maybe it's not a normal dog at all."

Turning slightly, he noticed the broken phone on the ground. Was that Reizo's, or just some unfortunate victim's? Kai couldn't tell the difference, but it wouldn't hurt to point it out.

"Hey, what about that phone? Is it Shirai-san's?" He pointed towards it for anyone who happened to look at him.

Seiko glanced at the phone, the magazine, but as much as she'd like to be able to decode these things her attention was drawn to the dog. Of course it was drawn to the dog, it was an animal in pain. It wasn't the friendliest looking dog, and she was fairly sure it was probably dangerous, but this was a girl who thought her dog-chasing, one eared cat was an adorable fuzzball. She crouched down, shuffling as close to the dog as she dared, closer than her teammates were to the dog.

"Hey there boy." She didn't reach out, as weakened as it was and as pathetic, she wasn't so blinded by her compassion as to get her hands too close to something with fangs.

"Um that phone, well probably important?" She shrugged, attention still fixed firmly on the dog, animals were always higher on her list of priorities than technology of any kind. "Considering, well everything, even if it isn't Shirai-san's it could be used in there right?"

Once again, Toru moved out of the way when Seiko came near. Sure, she could get close to the dog. If it chose to attack, at least it wouldn't be likely to go for hi- no. This isn't right, even if she's a horrible person. She's still part of the team.

He gave the wounded animal a parting glance through the fence before turning to the rest of the team. Those eyes... it looked so wild and dangerous, even when it was on the ground, bleeding. And familiar, though not in any tangible way. Probably because of all of the anime I've seen with wolves or dogs... there sure are a lot. But this is a hell of a lot more real.

"Let me see. Shirai's in my class, so..." Toru walked over to pick up the phone. It was completely trashed- the bottom half was broken off, so it couldn't even be used. Nonetheless, it didn't look like something of Reizo's. It looked too cheap- and it lacked the skull decals that had made Toru quietly snicker near the back of the party when he'd first noticed them in battle. It wasn't his.

"The phone's somebody else's, guys, and it's not going to be of any use to us, anyway. It's never going to turn on again."

The further they got into the alley, the less he felt comfortable about it. "Talk about weird," Isao commented to himself, nudging the odd looking doll... thing. That was certainly different. He had to wonder who in the world would spend the time doing something like that who also spent time in this sort of alley? Then again, maybe it was the street kid's reply to Pottery Barn. If only it were a lamp or at least a suitable throw pillow. Or maybe a penny bank... Hm.

Obviously, he was never one to fret over details that probably just came with it being a hang out for people whom he assumed that he and the others didn't usually associate with. Toru had confirmed that the phone wasn't Reizo's. There were plenty of other odd things around, but as most of the others, his attention was on the other living creature within the area. He leaned over to get a glimpse of the dog the others were looking about before he hopped up on some of the nearby crates to attempt to get a better look from over the fence rather than through it. "There haven't been any rumors of dog fighting around here?"

"Either way, it seems dangerous, so... I'm guessing we should probably go ahead and check it out unless you guys think this stuff is useful." It was a cynical sort of logic to have, but given the usual it only made sense. Whatever seemed most dangerous was usually what they jumped head-first into. Just being in the alley they were in now was proof enough for that. He was willing enough to try and get closer if they didn't have any better ideas. After all, if the dog couldn't stand there was only so much it could do to them fence or no fence.

The wounded dog watched the newcomers, the one closest to it most of all, as warily as any injured and cornered beast might. The furry triangles of its ears were laid back against its skull, and its burnished copper eyes were open, focused primarily on Seiko but jumping to others at the slightest movement. Its tail thumped against the ground, and it stretched out some, laying its head morosely on the ground and tilting its weight to the hip without the knife protruding from it. It lay still after, belly half-exposed and eyes and tail flicking nervously, letting out a sigh that turned into a keening whine midway through.

"He's hurt, try not to move him, and don't touch the knife either." Tom inwardly seethed at having been so far away that he'd gotten into the alley after a crowd had formed. He'd had to take the time to work his way through unseen.

When he finally did reach the scene, several of his teammates had already arrived, they'd looked at some of the clues, but missed some of the obvious ones. In all honesty, he thought it would be best to examine the whole scene, to take photos, to work it out, but he looked at the wounded animal, and memories struck him. A small face, cold and wet in the rain. A dog so small it could be stepped on, thinking it still had the strength to fight. Tom knew exactly what his priorities were, and they weren't to the evidence.

He dropped to a knee next to the wounded animal, and opened his messenger bag.

"Pulling the knife out could cause bleeding to get worse. Letting him try to move could shift it, and make the wound deeper. He'll have to be carried. One of you is going to have to keep pressure on the wound around the knife."

"I think you're right, senpai." Yoshimi had been watching from the back of the group, hesitant to get involved with all the complexities and responsibilities of a Paradise-related investigation. But coming upon an injured dog was something she could deal with, something that, while upsetting, was comfortingly normal and didn't involve killer angels or deathtrap-filled alternate dimensions or having to face down Shirai Reizo's repressed self, at least as far as she could tell.

"Should I call my vet's office and tell them we'll be bringing the dog in?"

Kozue had been towards the back of the group, silent throughout most of the walk into the shady parts of town (she was used to something of a different brand of shady, and this was very, very far from her element). Partly, she was silent out of fear, and partly because she kept composing an updated text message to Kiriko, to let her know what was going on, and then deleting pieces because, ultimately, there was nothing to say: it was creepy and there was a dog.

It was only after she scrapped the message about the dog that she stopped tapping on her phone, and actually tuned in to the conversation. They needed to help the dog, and it was injured? Well, why didn't…

Kozue actually opened her mouth and stepped forward before she remembered that even though they were dealing with Shadows and Paradise, they weren't in Paradise. She couldn't heal. She didn't even know how to properly put on anything bigger than a bandaid (which began to demand the question of why her magical personality had the power to heal, really, but that thought only flashed briefly in Kozue's mind before fluttering away, like most such thoughts). She tottered, balanced forward but not sure where to go, before deciding that really, she was as qualified as anyone else, save perhaps Tom The Ever Prepared. "I could put pressure on it? And... Uh, maybe give him something to eat?" She glanced to Yoshi and nodded, "And yeah, that's a really good idea."

She stepped, still cautiously, towards where Tom and the dog were.

Kouchisei had gathered that about the situation - the way to treat the dog's knife injury - but had paid no conscious thought to it previously; the reason it was a dog and not Shirai was a compelling one, and the only reason he wasn't paying it more attention.

"What we should do is get back on Shirai," he announced. "This is getting us further away and wasting time. Ishinomori-san, please check the condition of the sim card. If it's useable, we can put it into a new phone and see what's what."

Having the arm strength of a moray eel and a level of desire to touch the dog on par with that of the average housecat, Toru willingly followed what Kou told him, and popped open the phone. The sim card looked to be intact, so he removed it and stuck it in one of his pockets.

"If it works, maybe we can track down the owner. Or at least what happened back here..." he muttered, justifying the "why" of bothering with the sim card of a phone that obviously wasn't Reizo's. Satisfied with his work, Toru then discarded the broken cell phone with a casual toss. It clacked against the ground surprisingly loudly as he walked back over to where the others were fretting over the dog.

"Anything else I can do to help?" he asked noncommittally, still wary of the wounded animal in his presence.

Kai hung back from the action and the conversation, watching everyone else work. He supposed helping the dog was a good idea, and a kind one at that, but he couldn't bring himself to get near it. He had a perfectly lame excuse ready if anyone were to ask - I have no experience with dogs - but his fear was obvious in his stance, in the way he wouldn't look directly at anyone, and would give him away.

So he hid in plain sight, hovering and waiting for someone else to take the lead. If that made him a coward, fine, but at least he was a marginally safe coward.

Cursing Iburi's transportation system and her unfamiliarity with it all the way, Renju had managed to arrive at the appointed spot several minutes late; given her current run of luck with buses, it was a wonder she'd managed to make it at all.

The eerieness of the surroundings was lost on her; her attention was fixed on the gathering group in the middle of the alley. She was too polite to push her way around this particular group (something she briefly regretted) and too short to see; plan C, therefore, was to ask. Fortunately for her, Kozue was also near the back of the group. "I apologize for my lateness," she said, quietly so as not to disturb the discussion (and so that she could hear it, besides). "Have I missed anything?"

The dog stirred from its position when Tom closed in on it, and growled low and deep out of its chest at the boy, teeth bared in promise of removing any curious and thoughtless hands or other taste limbs that came to close. It retreated further into the dark shadow of the door it was laying outside of, the crusted blood on its fur a deep and dark red in the dark of the doorway as it positioned itself half-in and half-out of it. It watched them, eyes wide and alert, ears erect.

It turned its head quickly, back towards the door, and let out a sharp yelp just as something came barreling out of the dark behind it, straight into Tom.

Reizo’d always looked a little rough around the edges, maybe even dog-eared, but never anything like this. His dyed hair was matted and stuck together in dirty lumps, and most of his clothes looked ready to fall apart at the seams. One leg of his pants was torn, and his shirt was half-undone, not from forgetfulness but from the lack buttons. What skin was visible was filthy, streaked with soil and blood in places, but even underneath the grime the baleful line of his scar was bright and noticeable, along with the shining gold of his eyes and myriad bruises and cuts. He looked bigger and meaner than he ever had behind Tom, one thick arm curled around the boy to hold him and the other holding the bloody knife to his throat in a meaningful way.

He stared at the group long and hard, a slow moment going by as his burning eyes swept across each and every one of them. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and gravelly.

“Get in. Now. Or you all die. Him first.”

The knife tilted, closer towards Tom’s neck, and Reizo grinned savagely, jerking his head back towards the door he’d just come through.

Behind him, oblivious to the unfolding drama, the dog at the door sat painfully on its haunches, body curved to let it lick and tend to the fresh blood pouring from its back leg.

Several thoughts went through Tom's mind. His attention had been focused on the dog, he was less concerned with the hulking form that had stepped from the world on the other side of the door.
This was not the first time someone had grabbed him from behind, and he quickly worked out four possible ways to extricate himself from the hold. Though they all had the possibility of the shadow injuring him before he could escape, and if Tom escaped the shadow could just as easily injure or grab someone else. Tom tried very hard not to look at Seiko when that thought popped into his mind, and he failed miserably. He quickly decided on plan number five, talking. It wouldn't be too bad, besides, they needed to go into Paradise anyways, and Tom was still fully armed.

He quickly looked at the dog. The poor thing needed medical attention, but more then that the rest of the team needed to be notified of the fact that the group was apparently going into Paradise. He glanced to Kozue.

"Well I guess that clears up some questions. We'd better do as he says, though Kondo-chan, why don't you send a quick message to the vet about the dog before we go."

Before her dungeon Seiko might have been able to handle this, she'd have just nodded along, followed what the shadow said without much reaction, after all back then she'd have been certain everything would be fine. Now after her dungeon and still feeling traumatised by her experiences there, all she could do was whimper slightly. She managed not to back away, instead slowly getting back up onto her feet.

She glanced at Tom, he seemed to be dealing with this okay, and logically he was probably the best person to have in that situation. But looking again and seeing the knife so close to his throat made tears begin to well up in her eyes. Because all of a sudden she could see what would happen if this went wrong, when before she had only ever been able to see the best outcome now for the first time in years she was able to see the worst too. It was terrifying.

Quietly she moved over to the door keeping her distance from the shadow that had it's arm around her boyfriend.

"Right." She said quietly, her eyes flicking to the dog for a moment, even thought her fear she still felt sympathy for the wounded animal, though unfortunately it seemed she'd not be able to help it. "We'd better hurry I guess." She hesitated despite the danger outside Paradise, her fear of what lurked in there caused her to falter for a moment. But she had no choice her ninja boyfriend's life could depend on it, with a sigh she started through the door.

Kai had frozen the moment the shadow had barreled onto the scene, too surprised to even move. When he noticed what it was doing to Tom, his numbness was replaced with cold, awful dread, and his heart dropped into the pit of his stomach.

The logical side of his brain knew that something like this had always had the potential to happen, and that he had to be braced to face it. The illogical, feeling part of his brain was screaming for him to run. But if he did that, it could mean certain death for everyone else, and he couldn't let that happen, either. They were all supposed to be in this together...

And that was enough to get him to trudge slowly after Seiko through the door. His gaze was locked straight ahead, staring into the darkness of Paradise, because he didn't trust himself to be able to look at the shadow without becoming paralyzed with fear.

Hands shaking and swallowing hard, he went through the door to the other side.

Kouchisei's thoughts of survival worked well. The temperature of his skin had seemed to drop, causing him to pull down his sleeves when Shirai investigated them. This pressure that he thought kept him short at times was clarifying that he was right. The Yakuza were a respectable organisation in some ways, but they also killed people.

So he said nothing and kept his own gaze downward, not wanting to draw his attention. They watched people trudge towards the door, and he was paralysed for a moment and couldn't follow them through it. This was a second confirmation proving humanity's idiocy, but the Yakuza would also stay and there was nothing he could do about Shirai anyway.

Yet, there stood one Shirai, and opposite were plenty of them. His mind thought about Tom taking one for the team so the other could be rushed, and his thoughts changed immediately because that was judgmental and wrong. Because if he did that, he would not be that different from the Yakuza brat, and that was something he was proud of.

The real predator was here. A dog? A dog was nothing. Lower on the chain. People ate dogs in some places, right? And Reizo no, his shadow was a step up from most people in that particular ranking. There was a feeling like ice in Toru's stomach- it made him sick and shaky, almost uncontrollably.

Reizo's shadow. The strong one. The strongest he's got a knife he's got Tom he's going to kill Tom this is not as planned

The ragged, devastated shadow was telling them to go through the door. Seiko and Kai had already, and who was Toru to question their judgment? A life was at stake if I hadn't gone for the phone I could have been the one in his grasp right now because he's my natural predator and- and cooperation was the only way to help.

With fists clenched and eyes downturned, he walked past the scene he did not want to see and into the door. Trembling.

The huge teen boy watched them go, shining golden eyes glaring out from beneath the greasy locks of his dyed white hair. The knife glittered red and deadly in the light of the day, homing in towards his captive’s neck, pressing to and marring his throat with a fresh slip of the dog’s blood as Reizo tensed. There was no doubt he was ready to cut Tom a necktie smile at the slightest offensive movement, or that it was a reminder that this was no time for anyone else to be giving out orders.

“Tell the others to come.” He snarled out from behind Tom, teeth showing in a display of feral aggression.

For a heartbeat, Renju froze. Completely, the reflexes of prey before a predator. She had faced down horrifying beings in Paradise, felt pain the likes of which she never thought she'd experience, even died once (an experience she didn't care to repeat). But her Persona was of no use here, and even the faint presence of Ksitigarbha in her head was warning her away from rash action. Here there were consequences. Here they could die. And she doubted that this Shadow was likely to hold anything back.

There was nothing she could do, save cooperate with it, something she had, to her chagrin, grown good at these past several months. With a regretful glance at Tom, she followed the others through the door. The thought of what might await them here... There were few minds she'd ever wanted to look into, but this was near the bottom of the list.

Misaki had been watching quietly the whole thing and moved towards the door. This wasn't Reizo, it was but it wasn't, and she felt like things were more unhinged then ever. Her eyes glanced over at him, then at Tom, as a shiver ran down her spine. This image was burned into her head, replacing the small moment she had of Reizo being kind enough to let her and Kiriko make some cookies at his apartment. The immaculate place, there was an odd civil feeling about it that had remained with her even after she left. Even with his behavior Misaki had thought there was some decency in Reizo, this shadow though replaced all of that feeling and made her angry and sad.

The door was the only way to go and she sighed some muttering, "I always thought there was some decency in you Shirai-san. Was I wrong to ever think that?"

Shaking her head some the pink haired girl walked into the door to follow the others into what was going to be a decent into a virtual nightmare, that much she was sure of.

Kozue was still clutching her cellphone in her hand—a grip that had clenched and tightened, becoming vice-like as terror rushed through her. She felt, although she realized it only dimly, almost like a rabbit or a squirrel must feel in the headlights of a car or the jaws of a much bigger animal, paralyzed with fear and uncomprehending of what was moving towards her and what was about to happen. There was no disguising it. (Kozue wasn't an awful liar, and a better faker, but neither of those faculties were available to her at the moment.) It was Tom's comment about the vet that pushed her towards actual thought, again; at first, perplexity amidst the fear. He was going to die, and he was worried about the…

She only half-heard Misaki's comment, and saw the girl moving past out of the corner of her eye. Maybe it would help; Kozue tried not to think about it, and eased the grip around her phone, willing herself to act despite her fear. "Yeah—I'll message the vet," she said. It was almost a whisper, tense and a bit shaky. She tapped out the message quickly, and quietly, trying not to draw attention: shadow armed. in trouble. and pressed the send button on her many-times composed message to Kiriko.

She swallowed, palming her phone and stepping forward, to follow after Misaki into the door. Did it lead to Paradise? It was the first time that Kozue had felt, with absolute commitment and certainty, that Paradise would be the safer and much more preferable place to be. She tried not to shake as she walked. At least, not obviously.

Tom's thoughts ran through his mind at an extremely fast pace. There was a time, a time even recently that he would not have worried at all, he would have been willing to die. First for his ideals, and then for his friends. Now though, when the possibility seemed more real then it had in a long time, Tom felt different.

His thoughts moved to Seiko, and Max, and Kozue, and the rest of the team. He had friends, he had people who cared about him, people he didn't want to leave. Tom was struck by the sudden realization that he didn't want to die.

He raised his arms, hands splayed out in front of him in the standard "calm down" gesture directed at the rest of the team. It also allowed him to show the shadow he was unarmed, but he doubted the shadow would believe that. It also put him in a better position to get his hands past the knife. He didn't expect to not get cut, either on the hands or even on the throat a bit, that was to be assumed, but it was better then getting his throat slashed. He had absolutely no chance of overpowering Reizo, but he might be able to slip away with minimal injury, if he could provide the right distraction.

It was a horrible idea to let Reizo continue to control the situation, but Tom wasn't ready to spring into action, not just yet. He needed to know more.

"You look like shit." Tom hoped echoing the same thing Reizo had said to him when they met in the park would spark some kind of recognition. He felt the need to leave "retard" off though. "And just so you know, I'm not doing this out of fear. I'm doing it because Shirai Reizo is on my team, he's my friend."

The shadow’s eyes went hard and flinty at Kozue as she passed, and his teeth skinned back from his teeth in a snarl to “hurry up” at the rest of them. He kept Tom held tight in his grip, the knife so close to his throat that it would cut him even if he turned his head, and he pressed it closer, actually nicking the poor boy when he started talking.

“You’ll learn,” he half-laughed at the boy, “that I’m a whole different breed than that mutt.”

The knife turned, and flashed downwards, dangerous tip aimed at the shoulder of his captive, who (ACCORDING TO TJ) reacted quickly, a hand shooting up to Reizo’s wrist to deflect it. The knife found Tom’s wrist instead, scraping first across the blades he kept concealed around his wrists and then down into his forearm, cutting a gash into the arm of his shirt and his forearm.

Reizo bolted forward, all of his weight charging Tom forward and into a wall, and then into the inky dark of the doorway Kozue had just disappeared into. He turned on the stragglers with a growl, the knife lost in the struggle, but the way he clenched his hands into tight fists and his thick arms bulged showed that it was superfluous to begin with.

“In. NOW!”
