Action Scene: The Malfoy Dinner

Everything was set to perfection. The fine china was set out, the house elves were dressed in fancy clothes, and Narcissa waited patiently in the living room for her guests to arrive.

Harry left Andromeda and Draco to Teddy and started to circle the room. He paused in front of a large window and pushed the curtains back with two fingers, peering out to watch as the sun slowly lowered beyond the hills. A chill raced through him as the lawns grew dark.

Why had he agreed to come again? He let the curtains go with a soft sigh, and glanced around himself. For the first time since he entered Snape's eyes were not tracking him. He had felt the instant Snape had turned his attention elsewhere like an abrupt change of temperature, but instead of warming he felt cold.

Ginny didn't seem fazed by his standoffish attitude and he was grateful for that small reprieve. He hadn't been certain if bringing her tonight was the best of his ideas, but the only other person he would have asked would have been Hermione, and he doubted she'd ever wish to come near this place, no matter how it had changed. Harry could admit the place did feel a bit more inviting than before, but not by much. Everything was so cold and off limits.

His wand was a comforting weight against his thigh and satisfied that no one was watching him, he closed his eyes and leaned against the wall.

Severus had turned his attention away from Lucius only to find Potter was no longer standing where he had been moments before. Frowning, his eyes searched the room, only to find Potter leaning against a wall in the shadows.

"Excuse me, Lucius," he murmured.

He made his way to the outskirts of the crowd, then made a beeline for Potter. Harry's eyes were still closed when Severus reached him.

"Potter. Are you ill?"

	"Pus is a sure guarantee that no one will touch you," Snape returned. And Draco wouldn't get anywhere near you. He didn't like that Potter wouldn't meet his eyes. Where was the young man who woke up in bed without the slightest bit of fear? "Would you like a bit of fresh air? I've felt the walls closing in all evening and could use a break before dinner." 	"Follow me." Snape lead him along the outskirts of the group, ignoring the look he was getting from Lucius as he lead Potter to the doors to the terrace. Once outside, he closed the doors behind them, blocking out the noise. "Merlin I hate these gatherings." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Not a hero complex, Potter, habit. I was tasked with your survival only to find out you were to be sacrificed anyway," Snape said bitterly. "That you survived at all is still a mystery to me, but I have no intention of letting the wolves have you now."

"The Malfoys can be very subtle, Potter. Chance meetings that have nothing to do with chance. Dropping your name with the right people." He looked at Harry, folding his arms across his chest. "Seduction if need be."

"The better question would be who wouldn't," Snape snorted. He looked curiously at Harry. "While there are gaps in my memory of our conversation the other night, I do recall what you said about Miss Weasley." He looked out over the garden. "However, you seemed cozy enough this evening," he said, fingers unconsciously tightening on the railing. "I never thought of you as the type to string someone along. Or are you only honest with yourself when you are drunk?"

Draco frowned a little as he listened to Potter talk about being used. His head when jerked up in surprise when Severus told him the plan. He had told Severus in confidence, and now he was telling Potter. Draco looked away from the door, frowning as he looked around the room. No one seemed to have noticed that Potter was missing and Andie was still preoccupied with Teddy. He turned back to the door. So Potter did spend the night, he thought as he continued to listen. His forehead furrowed in confusion, as Severus' voice sounded..hurt, betrayed? when he mentioned Potter bringing the She-Weasley.

Why would it matter?, something his Mother had said came back to him. His eyes widened, Severus was interested in Potter? But Severus knew Potter was his only option out of an arranged marriage, surely Severus wasn't selfish enough to actually pursue Potter. He waited for Severus to tell Potter that he needed him, and that this wasn't a game to him, but Severus didn't defend him.

Draco turned away feeling inexplicably hurt. His Godfather selfish, how could he have forgotten that? Severus would do what he wanted regardless of who was hurt in the process, even him. He slipped back to Andie's side, stomach churning sickly.

	Harry exhaled softly and leaned his head against his hands. "I don't know," he muttered, rubbing his forehead. He felt exhausted physically and mentally. "I really don't.
