Action Scene: The Malfoy Dinner

Everything was set to perfection. The fine china was set out, the house elves were dressed in fancy clothes, and Narcissa waited patiently in the living room for her guests to arrive.

"Did you socialize at all in the afterlife?" Lucius asked curiously, slanting a look at Severus. "I would have thought your idea of heaven was an empty library and a full pot of tea."

"It was...peaceful," Snape said softly, before sniffing and drawing himself stiffly upright. "I see the werewolf and his brood have arrived. Lowering standards tonight, Lucius?"

Lucius just barely managed to keep himself from snarling. "I told Narcissa that Gryffindors had a peculiar sense of what constitutes family. I knew he would come." He lifted his head and gave a tight smile to the group and went back to speaking softly. "You don't suppose he'll chew the furniture, do you? That chair he's eyeing was a gift from a queen two centuries ago. A Muggle, but royalty nonetheless."

"He's fairly tame," Severus answered, taking in Lupin's appearance. "I'm surprised he's not off buggering Black. I wonder if that's why Tonks looks so maudlin. She could do better."

Of all of his tormentors at Hogwarts, he tolerated Lupin the best, though they were hardly on good terms. Not that he was on good terms with anyone.

"Black," Lucius said, barely concealing his distaste. "Thank Merlin he isn't here tonight. I don't think I would have been able to control my wand with that one around."

"I'm not seeing the problem," Severus replied, a droll smile on his face. "Good god, must the Weasley chit hang all over Potter that way? It's obscene!" he spat.

"Hmm, yes," Lucius said. "If only I can get Draco to hang on him instead, that I wouldn't mind. I'm not sure I trust the boy to woo the Potter brat, though. He looked as if he were sick at the thought. He'll have to suck it up, though, for the good of the family. I wish he'd listen to my advice more closely, though. Not a romantic bone in his body, my son."

If it were possible, Severus would have paled. "You can't be serious! Draco? With Potter?"

Over my no longer dead body!

"I can see where it would be wise to cultivate a friendship with Potter, but honestly Lucius, a liason?"

Lucius lifted a brow. "Is that jealousy I see? I wouldn't have thought you'd be interested in the boy. Although you have spent quite a bit of time with him," he added thoughtfully.

"Don't be absurd," Severus said dismissively, though his eyes were watching Potter's every move. "The Weasley bint will no doubt be wanting to breed with him on the first given opportunity."

Lucius made a face. "I don't think even I can convince Draco to ... oh," he said with dawning realization. "Oh, well, I see."

Severus looked sharply at Lucius. "Meaning?"

Lucius disguised a chuckle as a polite cough. "I was speaking of my own son, Severus. You were the one who leaped to the conclusion that you must be obsessing over Potter."

"I am not obsessing over Potter," Severus snapped. "I'm merely making an observation. I'm sure they'll make the perfect little family, even if Potter has no desire for her."

Lucius looked over at the couple again. They looked 'happy' enough to him. However, "There is no way I'm allowing that girl to marry that boy. Potter should go to someone who needs his reputation. Like Draco. Or the Parkinson bint, but I'm not allowing that either. Although I'm sure her parents would see the use in that match ... perhaps I'll send the Parkinsons an invitation to use the chateau until I secure this union for Draco," Lucius murmured to himself.

Severus' jaw tightened as Lucius went on about his plans for Potter. This was completely unacceptable. "While I'm sure Pansy is a lovely girl, she and Potter would never suit. Potter could never be happy with her."

Lucius nodded. "Oh, I agree. Wretched little thing, cares only for herself. Now Draco will make the boy fall in love with him. And I'm sure it would be good for Draco, as well," he added as an afterthought.

Severus remained calm on his exterior, though there was quite a lot of shouting going on his head. Much of it was directed at Lucius and stupid idea of pushing his son at Potter. And he would have very much liked to have pointed out that Potter woke up in HIS bed, not Draco's!

Instead, he said quite calmly, "I think it would be a disaster and Draco will only end up hurt by it."

Lucius raised an eyebrow. "Hurt? I don't see how. If Draco maintained the upper hand in the relationship, and only allowed himself to care so much, then I don't see what the problem would be."

Upper hand? It sounded like a bloody business arrangement. One that couldn't end well for anyone. Once again, Potter would just be another pawn in someone else's game.

Anyone with two eyes could see how uncomfortable he was at this gathering. Severus couldn't imagine Potter stuck doing this for the rest of his life.

"Don't do it Lucius."

Lucius sighed. "If you have a better idea, I'd love to hear it. Draco needs to look good in the eyes of the rest of the wizarding world, and Potter is his best chance. But if you have some other plan then by all means, share."

He suddenly felt much older, and much more tired, than he had just moments before. He thought of his own marriage, which was more an alliance and eventual friendship than a love-match. He had long given up on finding that sort of relationship in his lifetime. Maybe the peaceful afterlife Severus had talked of would be, for Lucius, full of the things he'd secretly longed for in the past. He shook off the maudlin thoughts and tried to focus on his friend's answer.

Severus looked at Lucius, surprised at the sound of defeat in his voice. "You don't give your son enough credit. He's more than capable of making his way in the world on his own merit. He doesn't need to latch on to the Chosen One to make his mark in society."

"I give credit where credit is due, Severus; you know that. Until Draco proves to me he can do such a thing, I will remain skeptical." He gave a signal to a house-elf to bring him another glass of spirits.

"It will never happen if you throw him at Potter," Severus said, finding himself wishing, not for the first time, that Draco would be allowed to be something other than the Malfoy heir and puppet.

"So I should leave him to his own devices and hope? You know me better than that, Severus," Lucius said, taking a bit more than a sip of his drink. Hope, he thought bitterly. That had never brought anything but pain.
