Taking a Step Back
Who: Aidan, Olly, Rosie, and Trick
What: New plan neither of them really likes
When: July 8th, late Tuesday Morning
Where: Ink Inc.
Warning: Language

Ink Inc had been closed yesterday due to both Olly and Trick dealing with what happened to Jack. But since the tattoo shop was Olly's main source of income and a great deal of Trick's, it was back to work the next day. He headed for work at his usual time, about an hour before open. Part of the reason it was hard for Siobhan to get a job was that Olly usually spent ten or eleven hours at day at work, longer some days. While he technically worked for Trick, like his boss and best friend, he worked on commission. Business was always good, but it was long hours. Siobhan needed the hours in the morning to rest, since she'd be wrangling their three pups all day by herself after he went to work.

Unlocking the shop door and letting himself in, Olly shrugged out of his cut and pulled off the light sweatshirt he was wearing under it. He hung them both up, then straightened out his long hair a little. At work Olly usually work tank tops or cut off tee shirts so people could easily see his ink. He was the shop's walking example board, proof their claims they could tattoo weres permanently. Plus it was advertising for Trick's work, since he'd done all of Olly's tattoos. His were much simpler in design than Trick's elaborate pieces. His best friend's full sleeve probably looked daunting to people looking to get their first tattoo, where Olly's simpler designs were a little less intimidating.

Their tattoos were differently themed, too. Almost all of Trick's were intricate designs that featured roses prominently. But they were heavy and serious in sentiment, which contrasted sharply with his best friend's fun loving personality. Trick worked out his demons in his ink, Olly had decided. Olly's tattoos, on the other hand, were pretty lighthearted. The little pawprints on his chest to represent his pups, the Bewitched logo on his forearm for Siobhan, and the other tattoo for his wife other people rarely saw all spoke of Olly's quirky sense of humor.

He didn't feel very much like humor this morning though. Trick wasn't in the shop yet, so he headed into the back room. His best friend wasn't there, but he'd be showing up soon. Knowing Trick and Rosie, they might still be going at it and lost track of time. Wouldn't be the first time. Olly wouldn't condemn them for it, especially with the shitty conversation he had to have with Trick about letting the cops handle the gangbangers. It didn't sit well with him on any level, but Jack had asked him directly to stay out of it. He couldn't tell his twin no over something like that.

It certainly wasn't the easiest thing either of them had done, but they'd both done it for Olly, and for Jack. It was the only thing, save for tracking that bullet back to the gun, that either of them could do to try and get some more information about what had happened. Thankfully, Rosie was a fighter and she wouldn't give up no matter what was tossed her way.

"Rosie's fine," he assured him, reaching out to pat his friend's shoulder briefly. He didn't want Olly blaming himself for putting Rosie into a bad position. She was going to be just fine. They'd both gotten a good night's sleep afterward and that would surely help her through the day. "We both wanted to turn over every stone that we could," he explained. "Especially considering the fact that they might have ditched the gun. If they did, the spell will be for nothing and I wanted to make sure there was more to go on than that."

Of course, now he was just worried about going on any of the things that they'd figured out about the man. Time was what they needed, he was now thinking. He just hoped he could convince Olly of that.

Olly was relieved to hear that. He put the plate down and started pacing as Trick explained. When he paused, Olly let out a long breath. "Jack asked me to let the police handle it," he told his friend. "They got to her first. Same with me. While I was playing with the kids outside so Shiva could nap, Bill showed up practically pleading for my help and to stay out of it otherwise." He shrugged defeatedly. "I promised her I'd give them some time. Bill's squad has the case and apparently they're taking it seriously because of the bad press." He didn't sound completely convinced, but his hands were pretty tied here. "I'm sorry, by the time I got done at the hospital, you and Rosie weren't here. And I wanted to talk to Shiva before I made up my mind either way." Because it affected his wife as much as anyone else.

Patrick heaved a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank god," he muttered, brushing his hair out of his face and flopping back in the nearest chair. "I've been worryin' on this for hours," he admitted. "Thinking about telling you that we should hold out til everything starts blowing over. Fact of the matter is that I don't want you to get mixed up in all of this mess too soon. They'll be looking to pin anything that gets done to you, especially if we run in right off. We found some information, and I'll tell you what it is, but I think that waiting is a good idea. At least until things start to cool down a little." The last thing that Trick wanted was to see Olly taken back to prison, especially for exacting some revenge. Drug charges were one thing, but any sort of battery or assault would carry heavier sentences and he'd be damned if he lost his friend for that length of time.

"Guess we both are on the same page, though," he commented. "So don't worry about waiting to tell me, not even a little. I spent most of last night with Rosie trying to figure out what the best course of action was. I want these guys to pay, but not at your expense. There's been enough bullshit going around without the added pressure of you getting in over your head. I know you're not looking for trouble, Olly, but sometimes it'll come looking for you. We hold of a couple weeks, we give them some time to take care of the situation. If they don't, well, then we can come in and figure it out ourselves. If Bill and his team are that desperate to get some time, I think we ought to give it to them."

At least someone was actually looking into the mess from Jack's perspective instead of the other way around. She was the victim and Bill would at least be able to see that.

Well, that had been easier than Olly had expected. Trick had a point, too. Things were hot right now and honestly, everybody was expecting him to go gunning for the fuckers. He should be hunting them down and breaking limbs. It was his twin sister who'd they fucked with. They shared a deep connection and not doing anything when somebody hurt Jack felt wrong. As a brother, as a wolf, as a man.

Olly nodded grimly. "Yeah," he agreed reluctantly. "Bill asked us to go to him if we find anything, but not happening. Anything we find he can't use and if he does, you know his bosses will try to fuck us over because they consider us just as bad as the fuckers who shot Jack." The police were always trying to shut down the gangs, even though the gangs were the only ones doing shit to keep crime in line in this city.

"Trouble always has a way of finding me," he reminded Trick wryly. "I don't have to look for it. But I don't want to drag you into this either without a solid way to get out since the cops involved themselves. Rosie and the boys need you as much as Shiva and the pups need me." Maybe moreso. Siobhan wasn't quiet as reliant on Olly as Rosie was on Trick. If he got locked up for any amount of time, it could leave her vulnerable more than just financially. Both Olly and Shiva could do magic, but neither of them were on Trick's level. They might not be able to help her if one of Trick's wards failed and a ghost came after her.

None of this was over, not by a long shot. Trick knew that. He knew that Olly didn't want to be sitting there on his hands just waiting around to see what happened. It might have been the smart thing to do for now, but that didn't mean it was the one that Olly wanted to do. Jack was his sister. Not just his sister, but his twin. She was important. It wasn't going to be easy not to do something.

"They wouldn't be able to prove any of what we got," he said, shaking his head. "A name. Nickname. Dawg," he said, shrugging. "Drives an Impala, like ever gangbanger in the world. And some sort of Crip affiliation. It's something, but there's nothing we can really do with it right now. We've got to sit on it til the heat blows over or we're going to be the first suspects. They'll link you to it as faster than you can blink. You're her brother, you'll be the one looking to exact revenge." He didn't want that to bite Olly in the ass. He had too much to live for, too much to lose.

"I know they do," he agreed, nodding a little. Rosie and the boys were his everything. Rosie was fragile. Delicate. She was strong as fuck too, but they were a matching set. One without the other never lasted very long. Nearly twenty years together hadn't changed that fact. If anything, it had just made him more aware of the fact that he was never going to be able to live without Rosie.

"Speaking of Rosie," he said, having meant to ask Olly something for a while at that point. "At the bash at the end of the month, Rosie and me are going to do a renewal ceremony. A real wedding. All the bells and whistles. I want you to be my best man." He hadn't been around at the time that they'd gotten married, just about eighteen years before, and Olly was his best friend. His brother, really. "So, what do you say?"

That wasn't a lot to go on. A Crip called Dawg who drove an Impala, did meth, and wore bad cologne. That was half the gangbangers in the city. Olly sighed and nodded. "I know," he said. "That doesn't make me want to go maim them any less though."

That was the biggest reason he was holding back. Because the very family he wanted to avenge and protect had asked him to stay out of it. While it chafed, he knew Jack and Bill and Trick were right. There were more important things than revenge.

Olly was all too happy for a subject change. Especially with that kind of news. "I knew you set the bash for the middle of the week for a reason," he chuckled, standing up and giving Trick a one arm hug and a slap on the shoulder. "You have to ask, man? Of course I will." It was an honor. Yeah, he and Trick had been friends for a long time, but being asked to stand with him at something like that meant the world to Olly.

Aidan knew his dad wasn't expecting to see him at the shop that morning, but it hadn't stopped him from deciding to pop in anyway. It was summer, so Aidan was kind of bored, and he had awhile before he needed to be at the bar to help out his mom. He supposed he could have slept in some, but the headache raging from his lingering hangover had made it impossible to do much more than toss and turn in his bed.

Since all of his friends were no doubt still asleep or passed out, Aidan realized he would need to find something to do to occupy his time until he had firmer plans.

Pulling open the door to the tattoo shop, Aidan stepped inside, immediately spotting his dad with Olly. He caught the tail end of their conversation and started toward them. "What's going on?" he asked, moving over to flop down in a nearby chair so he could stretch his legs.

Patrick knew it wasn't easy to deal with sitting around. Not for Olly, but he was glad that he was managing to do so. For now at least.

He was more glad that they were moving on to happier conversation and that Olly agreed to being his best man. That meant more to him than he could have said. He grinned and hugged his friend. "Thanks," he said. "Means a lot to me." Way more than a lot, but he couldn't even express it. He would have said more, but the door opened and Aidan came into the shop.

Pulling out of the hug, he glanced at his son. "Hey, kid," he said, patting his shoulder with one hand. "Was just telling Olly about the wedding at the bash this month," he explained. His son had already been told about the renewal, of course, but he'd wanted to surprise Olly with the request to be his best man. "He's agreed to be the best man," he said, smirking a little. "Mom might have to feed him extra special today," he teased.

Then his attention turned to his son again. "Nothing fun to do today?," he asked the boy. He doubted the kid wanted to spend a lot of time at the shop. Surely he had other things to do.

"Means a lot to me," he said. "Shiva's going to be thrilled. We'll get the pups in on the act and everything." Shea would love to play flower girl, even if she'd probably throw the flowers too hard. It'd be adorable. Jackie would love to be all big and responsible with helping him with the rings. Yeah, this was some very welcome good news.

Olly smiled at Aidan. "Hey," he greeted the boy. "Yeah, like I could say no?" He gave Trick a pop on the shoulder. He scoffed at that, remembering his plate sitting there. "Speaking of food." He didn't want to waste it and he was always hungry. He went to finish the plate while Trick asked Aidan about his plans. Or lack therein

Oh, right. The wedding thing. Aidan attempted not to roll his eyes. The whole thing seemed cliche and pointless, just another excuse to throw a party and get wasted. But they could do whatever they wanted, obviously. Aidan glanced at Olly, biting down on any resentment that he had that his dad would ask Olly to be his best man instead of Aidan. Especially since he didn't want to be a part of the actual ceremony anyway.

His gaze ticked back to Patrick. "That comes later," Aidan said with a shrug. "Fun is still sleeping. Just killing time until it wakes up."

Patrick knew that it might not be a big deal to Aidan, but that didn't make it any less of an important event to his father. Rosie meant the world to him and he wanted to celebrate their eighteenth wedding anniversary with something big. So a renewal was the best way to do it. All their friends and family were going to be gathered around anyway, so it was only right to make a big ceremony of it.

He arched his brow at his son. He hadn't been doing a whole lot of anything over the summer. He was curious as to why. "Fun needs to get off its' ass and start getting with the program," he said. He reached for a roll of paper towels and some cleaner and handed both to Aidan. "Well, since you're here anyway, make yourself useful, Aid. Wipe the chairs down for your ol' man?"

Olly's brows raised at the flare of anger he smelled off the kid. Damn. Yeah, Aidan had been surly since he started high school, but it was getting worse rather than better as he got older. He'd been trying to puzzle out if it was just teenage angst or something deeper, but hadn't wanted to corner the boy. "I'm gonna take this plate back to Rosie," he suggested. "I need to talk to her about something anyway." They'd probably assume it was some errand Shiva had sent him on.

Stopping, he caught Trick's eyes and then nodded his head towards Aidan. His friend needed to talk to his kid. So he was making himself scarce. Especially since he did actually need to talk to Rosie.

Aidan blinked and stared at the paper towels for a second before Olly mentioned he was leaving. "I don't really feel like cleaning chairs, dad," Aidan told Patrick after Olly had disappeared. "I gotta help at the bar later. That's pretty much the extent of the shit I'd like to do today."

Patrick assumed Olly's leaving meant that he was doing more than returning the plate. He disappeared suddenly and without much notice and once he was gone, Trick's attention turned to his eldest son. "Alright," he said. "Then don't clean the chairs. But tell me what's got you all pissy lately, that'd be a good start." He didn't like to delve into his kid's personal business, but he wanted to know what was up. If something was bothering Aidan, he wanted to find out what it was.

"You've been acting off lately, Aid, so spill. What's going on with you?" He tilted his head a little and his brows arched questioningly, but not harshly. He wasn't wanting to push Aidan into a place he didn't want to be, but he did have some concern for the kid and what was going through his head. "It's like you've got a chip on your shoulder, something bugging you, I'd like to figure out what it is."

It was impossible not to appear annoyed at the sudden shift in conversation and Aidan lifted his face up toward the ceiling with a sigh. The shit he was going through had been happening a lot longer than 'lately'. And did his father honestly think Aidan wanted to talk about any of it?

"Sorry," Aidan said simply, standing up from the chair he had occupied when he first arrived. "I don't really feel like having some corny heart to heart talk with my old man. I've got shit to do." He thumbed toward the exit. "But you can tell Olly he can come back now."

The sigh, the way he looked up in annoyance, and the fact that he immediately went into avoidance mode and decided he wanted to flee. "Sit your ass down," he told his son, sternness in his voice as he narrowed his eyes on Aidan. "This ain't about a corny heart to heart, it's about you having a little more respect than to talk to me like I can't lay your ass out for the shitty tone, boyo." He wasn't about to play the game with his kid.

Trick was a laid back parent, but he was starting to get annoyed himself and he could feel his temper flaring. "I want to know what's going on with you," he said. "I've been pushing it aside for more than long enough, attributing it to teenage angst, hormones, and all the usual shit, but there's something bigger going on here and I want to know what it is."

Aidan's eyes flashed with temper, but he managed to keep in reined in for the time being. He almost wanted to push his dad into trying to 'lay his ass out', just so Aidan would have an excuse to take a swing. It wasn't even like he was really angry with his dad. Not really. It was deeper than that, and nothing Aidan could really explain to himself, let alone Trick. He didn't want to explain it.

He was quiet for a moment, although his jaw clenched and unclenched with the frustrated anger he continued to feel. Finally Aidan shrugged, forcing himself to look at his father in the eyes. "Honestly, it's really none of your goddamn business."

Trick saw and recognized that look in his son's eyes. They had the same Irish temper and he had expected as much. Half of him wanted Aidan to go ahead and take a shot, just so he could prove his point. He might have been forty, but that didn't mean he couldn't still go a round if he needed to. He didn't want to, but he didn't like being disrespected either.

The same flash of temper flicked through Patrick's eyes when Aidan said what he did. "It is my business because you're my son," he told him. "Because I want what's best for you and because I'm not fucking stupid, I know that something is going on. I should have said something before, but I'm saying something now."

"I never said you were fucking stupid," Aidan spat, his temper finally fraying at the edges. "I just don't want to fucking talk about it! Can you just stay the fuck off my back?" He was feeling hot and restless and the urge to break something was near intolerable. So Aidan turned quickly to leave the shop, thinking he should have just stayed in bed until one of his friends texted him. "I'll be back later."

Trick wanted to know what was going on, but he wasn't going to keep pushing Aidan. Not when he was like this. It was something that was important and quite obviously driving the kid off the edge. That was a problem. If it was that bad, or that emotionally painful, it was something that Patrick felt the urge to help his kid with. But how can you make someone talk to you when they don't want to?

He watched as Aidan turned towards the door. "Fine," he said, hoping to stop the kid before he could get away. "Then don't talk about it, just... I'm sorry, alright? I just worry about you. It's in the job description. So if you don't feel like talking about it now, okay. But when you do, just know I'm not going anywhere. Ever. Okay?"

Aidan didn't really know if he believed that. He wanted to have faith in his dad, but there was never any telling how a father was going to react to having a queer son. And Aidan didn't think he could handle seeing disappointment, or worse, disgust in his dad's eyes. But it didn't matter. Aidan had no intention of telling his parents anything. At least not yet. Not while he was trying to figure out who the hell he was.

Opening the door, Aidan paused and glanced over at Trick, feeling sort of weary and resigned. "You don't have to worry about me." He left it at that and slipped out of the shop, closing the door behind him. He decided to just wander until he was needed at the bar. Anywhere was better than being there.

Patrick sighed and watched his son go. "Right, kid. Like that's ever going to happen," he muttered to himself as he sank down in his chair and leaned back rubbing his hands over his face and sighing. He couldn't turn off the worry for Aidan any more than he could for Caden. He couldn't turn that worry off any more than he could for his wife. Or Olly, or Shiva, or the little ones. Or anyone else that meant something to him. Aidan was his first born, his first son. He was special. He was smart, even if he didn't apply himself, capable, whether he wanted to be or not, and more than he was giving himself credit for.

He wanted Aidan to talk to him, but he couldn't force the boy to. He would open up when he felt comfortable enough, so Patrick decided then and there that he was going to do what he could to make him feel comfortable enough.
