Which meant that Gemma was on the lookout for a new book. A common treat for herself whenever something was on her mind, but she couldn’t quite work it out, shopping was a good way to keep her mind distracted. And of course she went straight for the small section of Astronomy books, a mixture of both the wizarding and muggle community. A small frown appeared across her face, as she picked up a book, she had no idea if tonight was going to be clear or not. It’d be difficult to see the stars if it was going to be a cloudy night.
“There you are!” Charlie said rounding the corner and catching sight of Gemma. She’d checked some of her friends' other usual haunts and the bookstore was in the middle of her list of places to check.
“I don’t know why I didn’t just come here first, but I tried your flat first, that’s logical, and then I went to the roof to see if you were hanging out maybe looking up at the sky, not there, and well, here I am! Did you turn your phone off? I tried texting you!” Charlie said holding up her phone as if that was how she was going to prove she’d tried texting.
“You need to come with me, right now.”
“Shite!” Gemma’s heart nearly pounded out of her chest. Was she really so lost in thought that she hadn’t even noticed Charlie?
“What-oh!” Gemma quickly checked her phone, and sure enough, missed messages. “Sorry, it was on vibrate.” She shut the screen off and looked back up at Charlie. “What’s going on?” A frown appeared on her face, trying to determine Charlie’s mood. Did something happen? Tracey? One of the boys?
Gemma didn’t want to waste time, if Charlie was going to take her somewhere, she would immediately follow. “Did something happen?”
Charlie sighed. “No, nothing is wrong, it’s just you are in need of a good healthy distraction with people, not hiding away in books!” She smiled. “I was talking to Graham and sort of mentioned I was worried about you and then it came to mind that I know just what you need!”
She smiled. “Don’t give me a nervous look, I’m not dragging you to an all night party!” Charlie had done that to her friends before. “This time I’m dragging you to a low key dinner and pampering, you know, nails, back massage, low key spa stuff.”
Gemma laughed. She really should’ve known. Gemma was even more thankful to have friends who knew her so well. Abby had been there with alcohol and an ear so Gemma could get out her worries and fears, and here was Charlie. A small grin appeared across her face.
“You know, that does sound nice. Just you and me or is Tracey coming too?” Not that she didn’t mind either way of course. Gemma enjoyed spending time with her friends, she’d said no matter what the activity was, but her friends did have to drag her to one function or another a few times. This, getting pampered was a much better option.
“I sent a text to Tracey, but I’m not totally sure where she is right this moment,” Charlie sighed. “And yes, just the girls, don’t worry, I didn’t invite the boys along.” She laughed shaking her head. “Could you imagine if I did? The trouble they would cause? They’d probably scare the poor spa people with their antics, especially if Miles or Adrian thought one of the people was attractive.” She sighed.
“But. No. They are not invited. This is girl time!” She insisted. “So are you buying that book first, or are you ready to go?”
Gemma laughed and rolled her eyes. “Too true.” As much as she loved being around the boys, she was even more happy to be spending time with the girls. “Hopefully Tracey will get back to you, if not, then I guess we can use it as an excuse for a second go.”
Gemma had nearly forgotten about the book. “Right! Yeah, give me a second and we can go.” Gemma didn’t wait long in life and after she paid for the book, she walked back over to Charlie. “Okay, now we’re good to go.” As they walked, she didn’t want to talk about her own worries, so she was sure to start the subject away from her. “How is Tracey doing? It looks like things are getting better with the Falcons, or at least I haven’t heard much about it lately, but I suppose I ought to ask her too.”
Charlie laughed. “I’ll text her again!” She looked down at her phone as Gemma went off to get her book sending a text to Tracey. “Tracey!! Spa Time!!” she followed up with a pin drop for the location before looking up at Gemma as she showed up again.
Opening the door to the book shop she walked out with Gemma turning towards the spa. “She seems to be handling it all pretty well, I don’t think she’s too worried about trading season, but I also don’t think she’d mind being traded. I know she’s loved playing with the falcons until the drama, but I don’t know, personally, I think a change might be good for her.” She shrugged knowing that wasn’t really up to her, but she thought a little shake up might be just what her friend needed.
Gemma nodded as they walked. “I think so too. With everything going on, I don’t want her to start resenting the game, so maybe a change would be good for her. They’ve always pushed the envelope, Merlin knows I have a few times.” She laughed. “But going as far as they’ve gone, tends to add more stress than it’s worth, and if you start getting embarrassed by your team and not being able to make an excuse for it, I’m sure it’s difficult for her.” Tracey is an amazing player, and Gemma really did hope that something good would come from all of this.
“I’ll just be glad once the trading season is over. I never really did understand why they would do a second round this late in the season. It never made sense to me.”
“Well, I know she got really sick of it and kind of mad at Lucian Bole when he went from ‘breaking a record’ to ‘this is too much’ but maybe he just wised up, who knows!” Charlie shrugged, she thought Bole was hot, who didn’t, but she could understand Tracey’s frustration with it.
“At least this one is a shorter season than the first one, but you’re right, why is it so close to the end of the season, it is kind of crazy!”
Gemma could shrug. She didn’t know Lucian Bole all that well, but she could certainly understand the frustration.
“At least we’re nearing the end.” She laughed. “And then I guess we’ll see what happens with the World Cup. Even if I’m not called-” Gemma shrugged. “At least it’ll be some time off, which is always nice.”
“Do you think you’ll be called up?” Charlie asked perfectly okay with the change of Quidditch topic. She was wondering who would and wouldn’t be called up and what was going to happen, whatever it was there would be parties!
Gemma let out a sigh. “I’m not sure. I’m not going to lie and say that I really hope so, but-” She shrugged. “We have a lot of strong Chasers that could play for England with only a few spots open.” She had a feeling who some of them would be, there were names that were almost a given. “Still we’ve been doing so well this year, that I’m at least hoping my name’s come up.” Gemma really did want it, she thought about it a lot especially now that they were so close. Gemma knew how hard she’d been working, and to be called would really show that she deserved it.
She moved her neck back and forth as she noticed the stress was making her neck stiff. “I guess I need this massage more than I realized,” she laughed.
“Well, I’m going to go with you are going to get called up, and you’re going to play fantastic!” Charlie said with a grin as they got to the spa, she held the door open for Gemma.
“Never second guess the magic of Charlie knows best!” She teased. “Or that I just know a massage and spa day is in order for a pick-me-up!” She added with a grin.
Gemma laughed. “I would never bet against you, Charlie.” She grinned at her friends. All jokes aside, there was some truth to it. While Gemma wasn’t as optimistic, she certainly appreciated Charlie’s enthusiasm. Plus, if she didn’t get called, she already had a mind that she was going to get a group together and travel outside of England and just drink and now Charlie’s pampering suggestion sounded good too.
She clapped her hands together. “Okay, I’m ready for a nice pair of strong hands to work out these knots.” She moved her head back and forth, ready to feel relaxed.
