Regulus sat on the floor of the kitchen, back against a metal door, the only one not hanging open with its contents pulled out. He had a freshly opened jar of strawberry jam next to him on one side, a spoon stuck right in the top of the jam. Next to the jar was a glass of water. On his other side, he’d opened a bag of bread, but not in the usual way one might open a bag of bread, he’d torn a hole in the top because the twisty-tie had confounded him.
The kitchen looked like a bomb had gone off inside of it.
Every draw was pulled out, foodstuffs and utensils and pots and pans cover the counters. One burner flamed, but nothing cooked over it. A fridge door hung open, its light illuminating the loan man sitting on the floor who seemed to be oblivious to the mess around him. The mess he’d made.
What muggle nightmare had he fallen into?
That was his thought as he’d peered into the kitchen for the first time. Nothing had looked like home, everything was this cold, shiny metal, and most notably missing were house-elves who knew how to cook and bake, unlike Regulus who only knew what food was when it was on his plate, not how it came to be.
This kitchen was so muggle. Or Regulus assumed it was very muggle, he’d actually never been in a muggle kitchen before, so he had nothing to compare to his memory of home.
With a sigh, resignation to this life he’d … well … died into, he pulled out the spoon and licked the jam off of it, then he took a bite of a slice of bread. After chewing a bit, he took a drink of water. He’d just wanted toast with jam and tea, and with his limited understanding of this room and the contents in it, this was the closest he could get.
