a good fit
who: Eily and Guy
setting: his place, a bit back
They'd originally talked about dinner at Eily’s house, but Blake had been right. Guy knew the mechanics of how to make a pizza and he could do that for her. So he got the ingredients and did his best to make it up the right way and set up a whole thing for her. He'd make them small pizzas and let her pick the toppings.
He didn't know a damn thing about wine, so he went with beer, a six pack cooling in his fridge as he waited for her. He'd tried to put something nice on, but wound up still in jeans and a half in buttoned flannel with his favorite black backwards hat. Not perfect, but nothing had holes in it.
Eily was pretty giddy about her date with Guy. She'd been gearing up to see him and she'd put a lot of effort into her appearance. She'd put on a cute skirt and top, done her hair up nice, made sure her make up was subtle but enhancing, and she'd gone over with a smile on her face and a bounce in her step. When she arrived, she knocked on the door and stood back, unable to keep that smile off of her face. She hadn't realized how happy she was to see him til she was here, and that giddy feeling kicked in hard.
Guy wiped his hands off when he heard her knock, grinning at her when he saw her there. “I don't look nearly as good as you do,” he said when he opened the door, partly teasing but clearly impressed. “Then again, I never could be. Come on in.” He moved out of the way, making a sweeping motion for her to follow.
Eily laughed. “Yeah, well, you probably also didn’t stress yourself out changing six times? So you probably got the better end of that deal,” she told him. “Plus, you look good just like you are,” she assured him. She walked in, and smiled, glancing around. “Sometimes I still have to get used to the idea of every place being the same.”
“Well, no, but I did change shirts three times, so we’re almost even.” He followed after her, looking around and nodding. “Fifteen minutes ago it was a mess. I haven't even been here that long and I managed to make a mess.” Even now, his pod was a little cluttered, jackets and hoodies tossed about, his skateboard upside down on the coffee table.
She giggled at the admission that he changed shirts. Even if he was just teasing, it was funny and cute. “Oh, I know how that is. I'm pretty sure not a single day went by in the O'Reilly household that the house was actually in order. One would have had to go completely crazy to keep it like that.” She followed him as he went inside and she liked the clutter around. It was comforting. “...reminds me of home,” she said, a bit of nostalgic affection in her voice as she reached out to touch a hoodie that was thrown over the back of a chair.
He watched her, tilting his head to the side, then doubling back to her side. He touched her back, then brought her closer to him. “Well, home is good right?”
She smiled, and put her arms up around his neck. “Home is very good,” she told him. “Life here isn’t all that bad. Weird, but not bad. The only thing I miss is home. Family. And you get that.” It was one thing that she felt was a very important connection point, one she held dear.
“I definitely get that,” Guy agreed. “I'm just making sure it doesn't make you feel sad.” He curled one arm around her back and ran his free hand along her arm, enjoying the closeness.
Eily watched his eyes, still smiling at him, feeling like this was a very nice place to be. “I don't feel sad,” she confirmed for him. “Kinda makes me feel comfortable and warm.” Like she was recovering a little bit of home, even if it was very different. She hesitated for a second, then leaned closer to kiss him. She didn't quite know what sort of kiss it should be, so she just let it linger.
A kiss. He wasn’t expecting a kiss, but Guy wasn’t going to second guess it. He kissed her back, pulling her a little tighter against him, breaking it off with a smile and lifting her off her feet a touch, with a part of spin. “Then comfortable and warm it is. How about hungry? I can’t promise a lot, but I definitely tried.”
She laughed when he picked her up and spun her, holding onto him tighter so she didn't fall. “I'm hungry!” she told him. “Let's eat! And talk, and my sister wants to meet you,” she said, throwing that out there right away. “Her name is Aisling, she's a paramedic,” she explained. “I sort of told her all about you. And my cousin Patrick.”
Guy let her go, but kept a hold on her hand as he walked them to his kitchen. “Aisling and Patrick. Got it. I'd love to meet them.” He gave her a playful look, smirking with it. “All about me? Should I be worried?”
“No, you shouldn’t be worried!” she assured him. “Maybe we’ll do a double date some night. She just got herself a man, so maybe that would be a fun way for us to meet each other’s significant other. A little less pressure, too, because there’d be more to focus on. Not that there’s pressure on you or anything, but I know how it can get, meeting family members.”
Guy shrugged washing his hands and getting the dough out of the fridge once they were dry. “I'm not that worried. I mean, a double date sounds great, But I figured I would meet them. Family doesn't scare me. I'm almost bummed you don't have a grandma here I can charm,” he said, adding the toppings he'd portioned out in little bowls to the counter. “Grandmas love me.” He flashed her a wink then went about spreading the dough in flour before starting to spread it out. “Who's the guy? Anyone you know?”
Once the dough was a little more oval he started spreading it on his fingers, making sure she was watching before he tossed it and caught it with ease. Guy wasn't good at a lot, but he'd been a pretty solid employee at the pizza parlor he'd worked at, and no one who worked there came in and out of that place without knowing how to toss dough.
“Trust me, I'm bummed my grandparents aren't here for you to charm too. But I know that they'd both love you. And my mom would too,” she told him, meaning every word. They would have really liked Guy. They would even have overlooked the part about him not being Irish, because his values were in line more than enough with their own. “The guy is her partner? I haven't met him, I don't think. But I haven't seen her so cute over anyone in a long time, so I can't be anything but ecstatic for her.” She smiled, just thinking about it.
Eily was the type where if something good happened to someone she cared about, she was always over the moon about it for them. When he tossed the pizza dough, she grinned, and gave him a little clap, too. “Very impressive,” she told him, knowing for sure that she wouldn't be able to pull that off. “I would have dropped it and we'd be ordering out.”
“Well, maybe someday,” Guy grinned. “‘Course, then you'd have to meet my family and that might scare you off. Though, they would love you too.” He tossed the dough once more, not showing off anymore but making it right before setting it down. “I have no idea what cute over a guy looks like, but if it's how gushing my sister was over her high school boyfriend it must be good. And don't worry. I dropped more than I can count learning. But I had a good teacher. Turns out, docking my pay for lost dough makes me learn faster.”
“Oh hell no! Takes way more than that to scare me off,” she told him, laughing. “But aww, you think so?” She smiled warmly at that thought. Guy really did tap right into Eily’s family sensibilities. “It looks a lot like a warm glow with bright giddy smiles and blushing,” she told him, grinning. “You got your pay docked! Well damn, yeah, that would definitely get you moving quicker on the learning thing. But hey, you got it down now, don’t you? Getting all impressive with the ladies. You ever bust that trick out on anyone else?” she had to ask.
“Nah,” Guy said about showing it to someone else. “Most of the girls that came into the pizza place didn’t care. Gotta admit, I’m not always the best with the ladies.” Not that he didn’t date, he just hadn’t had a long term girlfriend since high school and after, there wasn’t a ton of time to date, between his jobs and family, but there were girls. He spread the dough out and added the sauce and cheese, then pointed to the toppings he’d laid out. “Your pick.”
“Well, we share that then. I'm not the best with the ladies either,” Eily teased, happily starting to lay out toppings on the fresh pizza. “Though in all honesty, I haven't had that many boyfriends either. With Darcy coming to live with us, she needed a lot of care that other people were a little too busy to give, and I didn't want to let her slip through the cracks. Plus I was sort of raising younger siblings too, and had a job, and yeah. There was more than one guy who straight up told me if I wanted to call when he was a priority, he'd answer, but til then...”
He watched her as she spoke, then moved behind, pushing her hair out of the way to kiss the back of her neck. “Sounds like an idiot,” he murmured. “Who says, even for a second, that you should choose between the two. I mean, did none of them offer to help?” He shook his head and wrapped an arm around her waist. “Total idiot.”
Eily grinned, loving how that felt. It gave her little goosebumps on her arms. She also liked the sound of his voice when he was murmuring like that. On her hands slid over the top of his around her middle, and she thought he fit nicely there. “Exactly,” she said, glad he understood that sort of thing. That for him, there wasn't even a question. It was very much what drew her in with him in the first place. That fundamental understanding of something that was such a gigantic part of her.
He liked keeping her close to him, resting his chin on her shoulder even though she was smaller than him. “Exactly. You’d have told me that, I would have brought pizza and helped you with the babysitting. Put the little ones to bed and make out on the couch.” He kissed her shoulder then moved towards the pizza to put it in the oven.
“God, you're just--” she started, laughing. Perfect was where that sentence ended. She could just picture that, too. Her running around trying to herd a gaggle of stray kids around, him showing up like a damn rock star with pizza to help out. She even bet he was the type who wouldn't mind if the kids all wanted to treat him like their own personal jungle gym. And of course the couch make outs – that she could get behind too. She leaned back against the counter as he put the pizza in the oven, the smile on her features appreciative, warm and pleased. “You're just awesome. I need you to know that I think that, one hundred percent.”
Awesome Guy could totally work with. He moved over to her, ducking his head to kiss her, something sweet, but also full of what he was feeling, which was pretty close to what she was feeling. That she was awesome. “I feel the same way about you,” he told her when he broke it off with a tiny peck on her lips. “Because you get it.”
Eily couldn't even explain to herself how she was feeling. Kind of like she'd found the one, or something. She knew that was silly, that she needed to get to know him better, they hadn't been seeing each other that long, hell, she was still seeing Gareth too, but there was just something so simple but intensely important that clicked with them. This conversation had her easily able to picture having babies with him. She smiled, and put her arms up around his neck. “Exactly. It's something you can't explain to people who don't, and not something that people can kind of learn as they go, either.”
“You can’t,” Guy agreed, brushing his fingers against her jaw and twisting a bit of her hair around his fingers. “It’s just… I mean it makes sense. I had the same thing, a girl that wanted me to spend time with her, but didn’t understand that I had two jobs for a reason.” He sighed and wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her closer to him. “You know, if you want, you could come to Christmas with me. I’m going over to this guy, Cillian’s? He’s a nice guy. We could go together.”
Eily smiled at that. “I'd love to,” she said, happy to take the invitation. She knew that she'd be getting together sometime with her family, but she wasn't sure when yet, so she was fine with going to a party with Guy. She gave him a little kiss, then another that was drawn out more. She marveled that she felt so comfortable there with him again. It just felt so easy to be in step there with him.
“Great,” Guy said, grinning more as she kissed him before pulling away just slightly. “Beer okay? I should have offered when you got here.” He didn’t want to distract from kissing her, from being close to her, but if he got carried away, they’d likely forget about the food.
“Beer is my drink,” she told him. “And it's fine, we got distracted. I'm good with being distracted,” she assured him. She waited til he went to get her the beer, and she gave him an impish smile. “So, you said something about making out on the couch...” she said.
Guy got two, opening and handing her one and then his own. He was halfway to a sip when she gave him that look, and he couldn’t help but grin. “Let me set the timer,” he smirked. He hit the buttons on the timer then reached for her hand, drawing her into another kiss.
Eily giggled, took a drink of her beer and when he was back over, she kissed him, deepening it just as soon as she could. Pizza, make out time, this was one hell of an awesome date. She felt giddy. Happy.
