Isn't it funny the things we forget when there isn't someone who cared to keep track. Seems my twenty-fourth, much like my twenty-third, birthday has come and gone without much precedence. Perhaps I am getting to old to care anymore. Or with Robin's death I simply haven't the gumption

At least old 'maid' no longer suits me. At least Vaisey wouldn't have that moniker to amuse himself with, there's that. What would one call an old unwed mother?

My mother was always too drunk to care, and there were six of us. It was a shock she could remember our names, although I'm not sure she did. Did you know I have a brother named Justin? Yeah.

That's crap. It's not like that here.

I'm sorry, that seems horrible. I suppose I'm a bit spoiled.

So I've been told.

It was, but it's over now.

I'm sorry this is happening to you.

That is good to hear. You are finding your way in this place, then?

I will be fine, it is only a slight melancholy moment. A bit of self pity. I'll get over it and be quite alright on the morrow I am sure. But thank you. It's odd how a stranger's sympathy will balm wounds.

But lets end the strangeness a little, I'm Marian.

Yes, I have a, uh, friend here, who is helping show me around. He has been very helpful.

I know how that is. I have my moments of that as well.

It's a pleasure, Marian. I'm Justine.

That's good! It makes things easier when you have someone you know in places like this.

I try not to have many.

I'm pleased to meet you. So to speak.

Yes, and I would rather have him here than any other in the world.

And I am pleased to meet you, as well.

I wasn't quite as fortunate, but I was in other ways. An Angel happened upon me and helped me learn a great deal, otherwise I'm sure I would be utterly lost in all this gadgetry. Has he been here a while?

A little while, but not very long, I don't think.

Longer than me.

Does your world not have this technology?

Oh so this is an adjustment for him too, then. I suppose you being here make it a bit easier for him too.

Oh no, I'm from the twelfth century. This kind of technology would have been burned, and anyone carrying it, as it would have been thought the work of sorcery.

That's so ironic.

In my world, wizards can't use things that are technologically advanced. They don't work. Something about the magical field around them that screws up the devices.

I suppose.

So the father of your child...you really love him?

I did, very much. For the most of my life.

It is until he's not here anymore. He's off back home doing foolish things that should get him killed but manage not to.
