The weather here is not conducive to focus; but having been brought here for the purpose of (I only assume) reflection, I've done what I can to put the heat out of mind. Still, my answers are less than satisfactory.

I. Every act, of man or God, has a purpose.
II. My arrival here was undoubtedly the result of some such act.
III. I've therefore been sent here for some purpose.
IV. Coming here has allowed me to learn of the events that make up my next (and final) two years of life, and those of most of my friends.
V. I'm meant to do something with - or learn something from - this information, which I could never have gathered without coming here.

And there I'm lost. I regret none of it; I would change none of it. What am I to learn from discovering that I've done exactly as I would do today, given the opportunity?

Perhaps; but in this case I can't see what understanding I gain from looking back forw at the events in question. I think we all probably understood them quite well as they were occurring. In hindsight I would change nothing, and so what's the use of hindsight?

I've never thought that there is much use to hindsight. To have no regrets, nothing that you would want to change- surely that is- "a consummation devoutly to be wished."

A man should regret his wrongs and atone for them. If I had learned something about myself and my actions that required regret and atonement, I think I should almost have preferred it - then the mystery would be solved. As it is, I don't know what I'm meant to learn from this place.

It's early days, perhaps your purpose will reveal itself. For me, apparently I am to continue my work without the distractions of my home life. The island provides me with the items from home I need to continue. That was a fairly big clue. I hope you get an equally obvious sign, soon.

Your work must be of the solitary kind.

It is. I'm a writer.

Ah.

But someone must read it, eventually.

The reading comes afterwards. The writing is all that matters now. If you write with the reader in mind, you will never write a great novel. You must write because it is in your soul, because you just have to get the words out before they destroy you. You bleed out onto the paper. The reading of it doesn't matter. Publication destroys good writing.

If what you write can never improve your fellow man, you'd do better to bleed for them in another way.

I like to think that it will one day. I have learned that my work is taught in schools nearly 100 years in my future. I simply mean that when I write, I write what is my truth, without concerning myself with publication until later.

And I have done do, I very nearly died in the Great War.
