I am finding the differences between the treatment of men and women far more disturbing than I ever thought they would be. When I was a woman, I think that I was too used to the way I was treated to see clearly how internalized such things could be, and how deeply such things persist in our society.

So following from that thought, I should like to ask some questions. I think perhaps just one at a time, since there is much to think about and discuss about each.

So, to begin.

Would you consider a woman who works, of her own free will and with no pressure or compulsion, in a strip club to be equally respectable to, say, a teacher or a waitress? Please explain your answer either way.

But it is possible to wish to do such a thing. Not all women are shamed by their bodies; some are even proud of them. And if the woman does such a thing of her own free will, who are we to judge her?

It isn't a question of a woman being ashamed of her body. It is how others treat her in that situation.

And how are the actions of others her fault or her responsibility?

If others have problems with it, then that problem lies with them, and them alone.

I would have to disagree, madam.

If a woman wishes to do such a thing of her own free will then she should be prepared to face the consequences. In one of the cultures I live in a woman could be stoned to death for such an action to 'restore the family honor'. Even in England it would be a source of shame and dishonor. Rather hypocritical considering there would be no women doing it if there was not a demand for the action by male customers.

I'm not saying that those are the correct outcomes, but nevertheless that is the way of the world in my time and I don't see a change occurring soon.

In that case, it is the behavior of the men that must change, not the behavior of the women.

Do you tell someone 'don't be murdered' or do you tell murderers not to murder? The first seems absurd, except when used to tell women how to control their bodies. Women are constantly told to dress a certain way to avoid provoking men to do untoward things! Why do we blame the victims and not blame those who are responsible? And that is not the women.

I'm not saying it is the correct outcome madam. Far from it.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm in favor of women's rights. I've even taken part in political protests in England demanding they receive the right to vote. But I see the world how it is even when I seek to change it.

Do not teach your daughters how not to be raped. Teach your sons how not to rape our daughters.

That is how I was raised, and how I intend to raise my sons if I have any. My daughters will know how to defend themselves as well.

I am glad to hear it. My daughter is very hopeless with her self defense, but even the weakest elves amongst us are stronger than the strongest Men. I do not worry for her overmuch.
