I must say, I'm not used to many people being so kind to someone such as myself.

Je suppose que les temps ont vraiment changé.

I have always believed since birth that the world is an unnaturally cruel place, but perhaps I was wrong.

A monster. Disfigured.

I can be, but not always. I'm glad that you are being proved wrong.

Disfigured? Why, that is not so unusual, old sport. Especially since the war.

It only took me my entire life to discover this truth.

The war?

Your entire life so far. It's not over yet, my friend!

Ah, yes. The Great War. 1914-1918. Perhaps it was after your time? I do keep forgetting about this time travel nonsense.

Ah, it is not, and God has granted me two very lovely women to spend my days with that can look past what other people could not.

Monsieur, I come from the year 1881. Though I'm sure the Franco-Prussian war left many people disfigured, I cannot say I saw them for myself. The only thing I am sure of is the fact I was born the way I am.

That is wonderful news. I'm very glad for you.

Ah, I see. I was not born until 1890, myself. I know very well that one cannot help the circumstances of their birth.
