(Use your dictionaries, and tell Mr Madrigal and myself what I said in a private reply to this post.)

**

To anyone who is looking after/responsible for any of the kids in Spanish class:

Let Bruno or myself know before Monday if anyone has any food allergies, please!

¡Gracias!

Bear in mind that I'm not a medical doctor.

A food allergy is where your body's immune system can see a certain type of food as a threat, and it will react accordingly. A person could have tingling in their mouth if they eat a certain thing, or they'd get hives. Or they might be sick, or there could be swelling around the face (around the eyes, lips, tongue and so on.) Usually it's pretty mild, but it can get quite serious and medical intervention would be required.

I think the most common food allergies are nuts, shellfish, gluten (found in wheat, barley and rye, so anything made with those sorts of flour counts), lactose (from milk, so anything that then derives from milk, like cheese, cream, butter etc) and eggs. Dr. Cuddy will know far better than I do, though.

So, we're asking so that we can make food that won't potentially hurt any of the kids.

I was about to ask a very similar question!

Sirius has never had any sort of trouble with food like that. I do not know what he'll think of unfamiliar foods, but I'm sure he would like to try them.

Would you like to try them?

It's very kind of you to offer, but I'll have to decline. I'm sure the food is splendid, but it's clearer for everyone concerned if I remain strictly an observer and don't blur any boundaries. Maybe if there is some left after the children leave I

Yes, everyone who is part of the class will be eating. I don't expect you to understand but

You should eat! Miguel and I will eat, and we are not students or children!

It is your class!

How will it look for O'Hara's authority if to the children it seems that there is a fellow my age who may or may not be part of things and simply joins in whenever he feels like it? Not to mention addresses his possible 'teacher' with such familiarity.

I am going about this in the best way I know to allow Sirius to keep going to the class without causing any trouble for anyone, including myself.

It will look like a great example of Colombian culture, and be a learning experience for the children. We feed every visitor in my culture, regardless of their age or how often they choose to show up.

Have you ever tried arepa con queso before? If you really won't eat in front of them, at least let me wrap you some to take home for later.

Not that chap called Bill, apparently. I don't mean any disrespect to your culture, I am only trying to behave as seems right to mine. If I let anyone treat me like a child in a school then Sirius will I don't know what arepa con queso is, so I very much doubt I have tried it before. I really would like to, and I'd be very grateful for some to try at home.

I am not offended, I will just feel bad if we are all eating and you are not.

Then I will definitely make some extra just for you.

Please don't feel bad. I'll try to be very unobtrusive! If you notice me you must only think of how I will get to enjoy the food later.

Okay, thank you for the explanation, that's very helpful. I'm not aware of any foods causing a reaction like that for Philip.
