Hello.

It is my very first day at school tomorrow. I have never been to a proper school before, so I am excited and a little nervous at the same time.

Is there anyone here who will be in my class? I have English first with Mr Torrance and Miss Belle.

I'd feel it was wrong not to offer any advice under the circumstances, but I have only ever been to boarding school, and so I do not know how much of it applies.

Hello. Are you Sirius Black's uncle?

I was meant to be going to boarding school in a few weeks, but I won't be going now of course. Maybe you can tell me anyway so I can remember it if I get to go home one day.

Yes, that's correct! Have you met Sirius?

I am sure you will go home someday, don't fret about that. Very well, these are at least some of the things that will be useful.

The first thing you must remember is that going away to school is going out into the world, and in some respects your studies matter less than the rest of it. It is going to seem unfair sometimes, especially at first. You have to be brave, though, because if you can cope with it all then the other fellows will think better of you for it.

Find some sound friends you can trust. Don't go about talking about how you miss your mama or your sisters, even if you do, because someone will surely tease you for it. If another boy is unkind to you, whatever you do, don't go running off to the professors. That would make you a sneak, and that is the very worst thing you can be. If it's making you unhappy, go and talk to one of your prefects and have him sort it out. It may seem that they're only there to be a nuisance and send you on errands, but really it is their duty to look out for you, and I know that because I shall be one next year.

Don't fret too much about the rules. Everyone breaks them. The trick is not to get caught doing it, but if you do, then you have to bear your punishment without making a terrible fuss, and then everyone will simply forget about it. Be as efficient as you can with your prep, by which I mean that nobody really cares how it gets done so long as it does.

If you have some kind relation who will send you cakes at regular intervals, share them and you'll be awfully popular. Don't let pure popularity be your goal, though, because learning to distinguish true friends from social climbers and assorted hangers-on is a useful skill. Don't let anyone goad you into fights, but don't let others walk over you and compromise your honour either. If you aren't sure about it, ask someone senior to you what you ought to do - and not someone who likes stirring trouble. Some steady, studious chap.

I don't think very much of this will be useful to you in a day school, but it will likely stand you in good stead at home.

Yes, Sirius and I wrote to each other on the network recently. I look forward to meeting him properly at Spanish class.

I hope I won't need

What's wrong with social climb

Thank you, sir, that is very helpful information to hold onto for when I return home.

You're quite welcome. It's best to be prepared for these things.

Sirius is too young for school, really, and so I will be sitting with him in the Spanish class to watch over him. I don't like to think of any little chap starting at any school with nobody to look out for him, I suppose, and so if you have any trouble at the day school, find me when I am with Sirius, and I'll see if I can't sort it out for you, or at least advise you.

Thank you, sir. That is really very good of you, and it makes me feel a lot less nervous to think that you will be there for Spanish at least.

Good evening,

It is my very first time at school tomorrow too, but I am only going in the afternoons. Do you have French and Telepathy classes later tomorrow?

Yours truly,
Miss Callaine Leyton

Hello,

That is good news. We will be new together, and that won't be so lonely.

I have French, but not Telepathy. I have to go to work with my father after French.

Yours,
Philip Hamilton

Dear Mr Hamilton,

Then I will look forward very much to meeting you in French class. Have you studied French before? I did, with my last governess.

What does your father do?

Yours truly,
Miss Callaine Leyton

Dear Miss Leyton,

I very much look forward to meeting you, too. I have studied French before at home with my mother. My father is bilingual, so always had someone to practice with.

At home he is the Treasurer of the United States. Here, he's trying to make everything run more efficiently. You will have seen him working at the town hall on Saturday.

Yours,
Philip Hamilton

Dear Mr Hamilton,

That is very good, it means we will both do well in French and we won't be lost. I haven't studied Spanish before, have you?

Is the United States a very large company? Yes, I think I did see your father on the stage on Saturday. He spoke very well, at least when I heard. I had to leave the meeting early.

Yours truly,
Miss Callaine Leyton

Dear Miss Leyton,

Yes, at least that is one subject where we are sure to do well. I have never studied Spanish before either, but perhaps we can help each other study.

The United States is the country we are from. Have you not heard of it? Where are you from?

That's right, I remember. The lady doctor was talking about all sorts of funny things I didn't really understand.

Yours sincerely,
Philip Hamilton

Dear Mr Hamilton,

Yes, I'd like that very much! It will be easier in Spanish lessons too if we are both beginners. Easier than being the only one.

I am sorry, I really have never heard of it. You mustn't take it personally please, because I am very bad at geography. I'm from Pretannica.

I think you must be very proud of your father if he is the treasurer of a whole country.

My brother told me that she was talking about things that were not at all fit for well brought up young ladies to hear. It is hard to believe anyone would get up on a stage and say such things! He let me sit in the park and read until the meeting was over instead.

Yours truly,
Miss Callaine Leyton

Hello young Mr. Hamilton,

I hope your enthusiasm rubs off on some of my other students. I'm Mr. Jack Torrance, my son Dan also teaches at the school. I look forward to teaching you.

Sincerely,

Jack Torrance

Hello old Mr Torrance,

Are they not enthusiastic? That's a shame. I will try my best to motivate them, sir.

I don't think I am going to Mr. Dan Torrance's class as I have no need for telepathy lessons.

I look forward to meeting you tomorrow,

Philip Hamilton

Hello Mr. Hamilton,

I'm afraid they aren't, they complain about homework. Most of them wont be in class tomorrow, though. I don't know if your father in formed you, but sometimes weird stuff happens on the station, and people travel back and forth in time. Currently Mr. Tozier, Mr. Kasprak, Ms. Stone, and Mr.Denbrough are all adults.

That said, we did just finish our last book, since they're gone do you have any suggestions or preferences?

I look forward to meeting you too,

Jack Torrance

Mr Torrance,

I know that my dad father will insist on my studying either way, so it is better if I have something particular to complete. That is a lot of students who are adults right now, so I think I will have a quiet first day.

No, sir, whatever you think is suitable I will be glad to read. What was the last book, if you don't mind my asking?

I look forward to meeting you too.

Mr Hamilton,

That's a wise outlook. This way, when you're homework is done, your after school time is yours to do with as you will. I think a quiet first day is a good way to start.

It was one that's not out in your time, I'm afraid. It's called "To Kill a Mockingbird." I think we will discuss which books could be next in class tomorrow, and I'll give you a copy of the last book, if you'd like. But you might need to have your Father look at it before you read it.

Jack Torrance.

Mr Torrance,

Thank you, sir.

I will take it straight to my father as you suggest.

(ooc - the book will be returned the next day, Philip just shakes his head, but there is a post-it that clarifies it is not the level but the content Alexander objects to.)

Mr Hamilton,

Okay, thank you. I want you to do this with all the books I give you, if your Father has objections we'll find you alternates instead, alright?
