Is there a qualified medical doctor here? Preferably a female one, with knowledge of late 21st century medicine or its equivalent.

Dr Cuddy is amazing.

You ok?

Yes, I'm fine.

I shouldn't be telling you this, because it's early and there's a whole lot that can go wrong, but I'm pregnant. I need a midwife, really, but I figure if I ask that I'm going to get women with herbs and charms offering and I don't want to upset anybody but also I need proper monitoring until I'm back on Rica. When is Dr Cuddy from?

Really?! You did a test already? That's fantastic, congratulations! Sorry, I know, I know a lot can still go wrong, but I'm feeling optimistic for you here.

Dr Cuddy is 21st Century.

Thank you! I'm so happy about it, and I'm glad I told you. I needed someone to know, I think, and you should.

And it doesn't mean we can't still see each other sometimes. If you still want to. I like you.

That's a big range. Hopefully closer to the end than the start of it.

I'm glad you told me, too. I'm so happy for you, this is exactly what you'd hoped for.

Well, sure I still want to.

Towards the start of it, I think. Sorry. It's incredible to me, as old-fashioned as I am, but it's probably not ideal for you.

It is. It's going to change things so much when I go back.

Good. Me too. You might be old-fashioned, but trust me, you're a lot more fun than Ricans.

I think I'll be alright as long as I get back to Rica before this baby actually wants to be born, because I do not want to do that the old-fashioned way.

I read you're starting a journalism class. What about if I turned up for it?

Yeah, it's a big change either way honestly.

Sure, bunch of bores are they? You're not so bad yourself.

What's different about it back home? They've revolutionised the birth process now?

I am... you're more than welcome to come along, but you know you don't have to. I don't need some excuse to hang out with you.

Maybe, but everyone else does it, so if they manage it than so can I.

You've got it. Apparently being the first child of the colony means I should stay a child forever. No fun at all.

There's genelabs that could probably grow you a baby in a vat by now, if you don't ask questions. On Rica we prefer natural babies, but it's quick. A little procedure and the baby's out. No screaming and pushing and sending men out to boil water so they're not traumatised, like on the Earth holofilms.

I want to. And we can hang out after.

I have no doubt.

Yeah, that is a bore, you're right. I'm glad I can give you a little fun, then.

That is a huge difference, yeah. To be perfectly honest, with my firstborn my wife near died in the process back in 1923. It was god awful. My youngest was on an island similar to this place, and it was less so. Still a lot of screaming etc though, I'm not saying it was a blast! Anyway, what I mean is, I can see your point.

Sure. Sounds great.

You're a lot of fun.

You know what I should do, though? See if I can start scanning the sector. If there are any colonies out there that were founded after mine, within travel distance. Just in case I don't jump back as quickly as I mean to.

Hey, so are you.

Oh yeah? I don't think that there are, but there are people who would know better than me around. Kat and Shep for starters.

Oh, no, it wasn't obvious. I have visions of the future, and I didn't understand who I was seeing at the time. But it was you, and you were pregnant and glowing with joy about it. I know what you will

You're precognitive? That's amazing. I heard that the genelabs were working on something like that, but I was always told it was probably impossible.

Thank you. It's very happy news - but I don't want to tell anyone else for a while.

That is a good word for it, yes. It isn't common, I didn't know anyone like me until I came here.

I'm very happy for you, and don't worry - I won't mention it to anyone else, of course.

That must have been hard, being the only one.

At least not for a while. Do you know if it's going to work out - if the baby's going to be alright?

Yes, it was.

I saw you certainly near term, but I don't know beyond that.

I can look, if you would like me too. Although I'm sure you understand, I should warn you, you may not get the answer that you want.

Maybe it'll be better for you here.

Please look, if you can. If it's not what I want to hear, I can at least do something about it now, and try again. It's better to find out now than later.

I can. Very good, then I will be in touch again soon.

Take care.

Afternoons, probably.

[Private]

Mornings are part of the problem. I'm pregnant, and I could really use those meds that stop the sickness.

I can get those for you, as well as prenatal vitamins.
Do you have an idea of how far along you are?

That would be fine. Where are you located?

[Private]

I appreciate it. My blood markers seem fine, but I don't have the monitors I would have offworld.
Almost seven weeks, I think. I know that's early to get in touch, but this is my first.

It's on wheel 3. When you get in the elevator, press this symbol [picture of the alien symbol for hospital]. It'll take you to the right floor. The medbay's big. You can't miss it.

Do you/did you work in a medical profession?
That's fine. The earlier, the better.

Got it! Thanks.

[Private]

Not exactly. I'm the firstborn of the second generation of a spacer colony, which means that everyone I grew up around was a highly-trained specialist in something, and they all wanted to pass on something, because, you know, something goes wrong out there and the nearest help might be decades away. But I'm better at repairing machines than people.

That and maybe we do more routine monitoring than you're used to? A friend of mine said you were early 21st century. History's not my strong point, but some things have probably changed.

I've been on the station for a few years now. The medical equipment here may be similar to what you're used to, being from spacer colony.

That said, I will still strongly recommend the monitoring from my time as well, such as physical exams, blood tests and ultrasound.  I'll also want to take a patient history.
