This is tiresome. I am tired of being sent to strange realms. I want to go home.

I do not expect that any of you will be able to assist with that request, so perhaps you will aid me in a smaller one. I do not wish to live in a suite of muggle rooms powered by muggle electricks and with a view of open space that reminds me how perilously close I am to certain death.

Is there a real house anywhere? A house alone, preferably in a field of real grass? I am not in a position to be demanding. A cottage would do. Even a barn. I do not know who owns the land here, such as it is, but I can pay in the muggle dollars.

How set are you on 'real'?

Quite set. An illusory house might look the part, but the maintenance to keep it livable would be dreadful, and it wouldn't be secure.

A building that is not a real house but is a real something-else might be suitable, if the location were right.

How are you at creating pocket dimensions? Or at the very least, accessing them?

That is not a term I ever heard used at home. Would you mind explaining what you mean by it?

If you think of the observable universe like a coat, a pocket dimension would be like a pocket. I could create, or help you create one of your own and attach it to your doorway. You could change the space within to be anything you like, even a cottage in a meadow or whatever the kids are into these days.

Ah! Then it is an extension of sorts, like when one creates a trunk, or indeed a house, that is larger on the inside than the outside. That is excellent! It is quite common in our magical system. I must ask, if the space is only anchored to a doorway, is there a risk of it collapsing in upon itself? If you were to create it and then to die leave? Or is it a working that outlasts its caster?

It would take a little extra work to make it closer to permanent and it could be tied to you to keep it open should something happen to me. I can say that if it were to collapse it would probably be from magical reasons rather than structural ones.

Thank you. That is to say, I am exceptionally grateful to you for suggesting it, but the possibility of it collapsing and leaving me trapped inside is such an alarming one that I had to be sure. Perhaps if, as you said, I were to assist in its creation? I have not cast that sort of spell before, but I am a quick learner.

I must also ask what I might do for you in return, as I understand that ordinary currency is of no use here. I am especially good at Transfiguration, should you have any need of that.

I get it, though I promise if it were to collapse with you inside you would be ejected. More like a bubble popping than a house falling down. And it is a very useful spell to know so I would be happy to teach you some of what I know.

I don't really need anything in return, at least right now. How about I let you know if I need any help in future?

I see! That is quite different, and a much less troubling thought.

I know how this works, and ordinarily I'm the one calling in the favours, but right now I haven't much Yes, that's quite reasonable. I shall assist you with whatever you need when the time comes, providing I don't find it morally or personally objectionable, is that fair?

You must forgive my lack of manners! This is all quite disorienting. My name is Arcturus Black, of London, known as Black to my friends. How do you do?

More than fair, and feel free to call me on being morally objectionable if I cross that line. I do my best not to.

Zatanna Zatara, Mistress of Magic, most recently of San Francisco but that was a while ago. Good to meet you.

Splendid! Then we have a deal. I didn't mean to cast aspersions on your character, it is only that meeting people from other countries and timelines has taught me that some have very different notions of morality.

I have heard of San Francisco! Is it true that it is absolutely full of gold mines?

No harm done, boundaries are important, especially where favors and magic are concerned.

Once that was true but in the time I came from, which was around 2011, there wasn't much in the way of mining.

I agree entirely. As you know this place far better than I, might you suggest a sensible place to set up the pocket dimension? Somewhere secluded, perhaps.

I suppose that after more than a century of mining it would run out of gold. That's peculiar to think of, all the same. I haven't met many people from as far into the future as you.

When I dip in and out of the ones I create I tend to simply anchor them to my rooms. If you're so set on not being near anyone else we could fine another, but none come to mind right away.

As far as I know the whole gold rush only lasted a year or two, but I'm not as up on that history as I should be. I take it you're from 1848-1850?

I think that until I understand more of what is happening here, it's most sensible to keep away from others. I'll go for a walk and see what I find. I can manage with a tent in the park until we find the right place.

That's a trifle disappointing. The reporters seemed to think it was going to make an awful lot of people very rich. You're exactly right with your timing, though. It was '49 when I left.
