Since I have arrived here, people have told me again and again about the 'women's rights' movement, and spoken of 'women's lib'. Could someone explain to me what that is, and how it affects me?

"Women's rights" and "women's lib" just means that you're allowed to think for yourself and do what you want to do rather than what the men tell you to do. It means that you can have a job instead of staying at home and taking care of the men. It means being able to have the opportunity to get the same education that a man can get.

That is, of course, if that's what you want. The whole concept is letting you do what you want to do. If you WANT to stay at home and take care of the men, it is your right to do so. But you have the ability to do other things if you wish.

What Stark is saying is absolutely correct, but to add a few points, women's rights include, but are not limited to-

- Bodily integrity and autonomy, which includes the right to control when and if you want to have children. (See abortions, female contraceptives, etc.)

- The right to vote, which translated into island terms, the right to have your opinion heard and counted as much as anyone elses.

- To hold public office, although you wouldn't think so under the Tories. I suppose on the island, if they ever put forward this council business, there we go-

- To work, to fair wages/equal pay. You're not going to get paid on the island, but you know. You can do any job you like.

- To own property. It doesn't have to be your father's, or your husband's, or any of that kind of Austen bullshit.

- To education. Study anything you like. There are millions of books here, nothing is inappropriate. If you want to learn something, there will be someone to teach you. Hell, the hospital is very much a teaching hospital, go and become a doctor. Or don't. Cook. Whatever. The point is, it's up to you.

- To have marital, parental and religious rights. No arranged marriages, yeah? No being forced to have kids. Nothing like that.

And there's a fucking hell of a lot more to it than that, that's simply from a political point of view. There will be books about, around.

	I must say that this is very...overwhelming. All of these things. It's so different from everything I've ever known. I mean, most of it is good, I suppose, that women are allowed to be what they want to be. But it's frightening, too, to see the world so wide open!
