Who would I have to talk to about learning to fly one of these bloody great ships?

I am a fully qualified RAF pilot where I am from, although granted 'where I am from' is Earth, 1939, so it may be about as comparable as being able to pedal a tricycle.

Anyone willing to take on a student? I would be most grateful, and if there is something I can do for you in return... goodness knows what, but we can strike a deal, no doubt. I am so fucking bored

One of a few here, you mean? Or one of a few of its kind?

I suspected as much - about it being different. I hadn’t counted on spaceships being safer, though. At least I am practised at not crashing into things? If a door ever opened to my own era, I shall give you flying lessons in return, in the cool, dangerous crafts. How does that appeal?

I shall try, but you haven’t heard me speak yet. I may call you “sshh” and then give up. It’s a tricky name.

There is no sort of leader of your government? I am amazed that they would ever be able to agree on anything at all without one. Well. Impressed more than amazed, I would say. I was about to ask why you needed a military if there were no separate countries, and then I looked out the window. What a fool. I must stop thinking in the scale of the Earth alone.

Oh the Normandy is one of a kind. Even in my time. I mean there aren't a whole lot of spaceships that aren't practically trash because they've just been sitting around banging around in their parking spot. A lot run, but that lot needs lots of work.

There's that, and you've flown before. The feel is still the same, I think. Except there aren't any bugs hitting you in the face. Hey, that sounds like a pretty good deal. As long as you land it because I'm shit at landing manually.

I forgot about the stammer. I've heard the speech you were making when you got here thousands of times though. My first name is Elyssa, I usually only let one man call me by it though. But I think an exception could be made, if it's easier.

There's a council. But they banded together when we realized we weren't alone. Fighting each other was silly in the grand scheme of things. It was before I was born though, so I wasn't part of that.

Ah, I see.

Well, then it's not as completely useless as I first imagined. No bugs in the face is definitely a positive. Alright, we have a deal then.

You have? Why?

Thank you. I will try for Shepard or Shep since it is your preference, but we will see how that goes. You're in good company - I don't usually let anyone call me Bertie either outside of my immediate family. One man excepting. And now apparently an entire space station, but mitigating circumstances and all that.

I must say that I am impressed. I clearly have too little faith in people. I suppose that has a lot to do with the current climate in Europe though, which I am sure you can understand if you are familiar with the speech.

When we first got here the artificial gravity was off, so they were like ships in a storm for an unknown amount of time. For a visual reference.

Nah, there are gauges and stuff that are almost the same.

Inspiration. It's inspirational, I've had to have more than one speeches like it during my career. The last one was especially hard.

There are some that you would still be King to.

Well, it did take an alien invasion to get it done. But I can understand.
