Who would I have to talk to about learning to fly one of these bloody great ships?

I am a fully qualified RAF pilot where I am from, although granted 'where I am from' is Earth, 1939, so it may be about as comparable as being able to pedal a tricycle.

Anyone willing to take on a student? I would be most grateful, and if there is something I can do for you in return... goodness knows what, but we can strike a deal, no doubt. I am so fucking bored

I can teach you what I know. I'm still learning the tricky parts but I know enough to get you going.

That is fantastic. I would greatly appreciate whatever you can teach me, it will be a lot more than I know right now, and we all have to start somewhere I suppose.

We do. I will try to convince my Dad to join us for a few lessons if you don't mind. He has centuries of experience and might be able to correct me on mistakes.

Have you ever been out to the stars? Have you been to one of the planets yet?

Of course I don’t mind, I’m sure his experience will be invaluable.

Perhaps I should have asked who your father is before I blindly agreed mind you. Bit foolish.

No and no.

Oh, his experience isn't the problem. But he is the Nordic god of trickery and lies and sometimes a bit insufferable to people who are not me.

I think we should start with that then.

What the fuck? Right. Then I suppose I’ll just treat him as I would a politician.

Perfect. When would you like to go?

Politician describes him rather well I would say. He can talk your ear off.

Tomorrow morning after training? Say 11am?

Well, I have plenty of experience with them, so we should be absolutely fine.

That would be great. Thank you.

Amazing. I will see you then.

Kat probably has a fresher knowledge of the beginner basics than I do, but you could both use the Normandy. It has an Artificial Intelligence program installed that could act as a bit of a drivers ed teacher. Then I could teach you both evasive maneuvers and some not so evasive maneuvers if you'd like.

If you don't mind me asking, Your Highness, what kind of planes have you flown? I don't remember.

Oh, uh, I'm Commander Shepard, of the Alliance Navy, N7 division, SPECTRE. At your service.

That is very generous of you, thank you. It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if I admit that I am old enough that controllable aircrafts were only invented during my lifetime, that may give you an indication. During active service with the RAF, I was skilled enough to be able to train others on the Bristol F.2 Fighter, and Sopwith Camels. I did try a few others after the war, recreationally but advisors didn’t like me to take risks like like the Siskin and the ridiculously named Hawker Demon. Spitfires had just been developed a year ago for me. Does this help, or is it just ancient gibberish?

Pleased to meet you, Commander. It seems a formal introduction in return would be redundant. But I am no ones king here - Bertie will suffice.

Well, it's only one of a few that aren't a junk heap. It's kind of a civic duty.

It helps, but I don't think they're going help you much with flying a space ship, as far as controls go. But I did go to a few flight museums in down time so mostly my brain is going cooool. Those are a hell of a lot more dangerous than flying a space ship, so you should be fine, as long as you don't crash into anything.

Alright, Bertie, if we're being informal, call me Shepard, or Shep. Only one man is allowed to call me by But it was mostly out of military respect. I'm from 2186 and earth at that time is under one cohesive government. There aren't any kings or queens or presidents or dictators. Not on Earth anyway.

One of a few here, you mean? Or one of a few of its kind?

I suspected as much - about it being different. I hadn’t counted on spaceships being safer, though. At least I am practised at not crashing into things? If a door ever opened to my own era, I shall give you flying lessons in return, in the cool, dangerous crafts. How does that appeal?

I shall try, but you haven’t heard me speak yet. I may call you “sshh” and then give up. It’s a tricky name.

There is no sort of leader of your government? I am amazed that they would ever be able to agree on anything at all without one. Well. Impressed more than amazed, I would say. I was about to ask why you needed a military if there were no separate countries, and then I looked out the window. What a fool. I must stop thinking in the scale of the Earth alone.

Oh the Normandy is one of a kind. Even in my time. I mean there aren't a whole lot of spaceships that aren't practically trash because they've just been sitting around banging around in their parking spot. A lot run, but that lot needs lots of work.

There's that, and you've flown before. The feel is still the same, I think. Except there aren't any bugs hitting you in the face. Hey, that sounds like a pretty good deal. As long as you land it because I'm shit at landing manually.

I forgot about the stammer. I've heard the speech you were making when you got here thousands of times though. My first name is Elyssa, I usually only let one man call me by it though. But I think an exception could be made, if it's easier.

There's a council. But they banded together when we realized we weren't alone. Fighting each other was silly in the grand scheme of things. It was before I was born though, so I wasn't part of that.

Ah, I see.

Well, then it's not as completely useless as I first imagined. No bugs in the face is definitely a positive. Alright, we have a deal then.

You have? Why?

Thank you. I will try for Shepard or Shep since it is your preference, but we will see how that goes. You're in good company - I don't usually let anyone call me Bertie either outside of my immediate family. One man excepting. And now apparently an entire space station, but mitigating circumstances and all that.

I must say that I am impressed. I clearly have too little faith in people. I suppose that has a lot to do with the current climate in Europe though, which I am sure you can understand if you are familiar with the speech.

When we first got here the artificial gravity was off, so they were like ships in a storm for an unknown amount of time. For a visual reference.

Nah, there are gauges and stuff that are almost the same.

Inspiration. It's inspirational, I've had to have more than one speeches like it during my career. The last one was especially hard.

There are some that you would still be King to.

Well, it did take an alien invasion to get it done. But I can understand.
