Okay, where is the meeting place of "bloggers anonymous"? Everything is creepily quiet here. Even no "look how utterly adorable my kid is with a spoon in his nose"-posts. I am disappointed in you kid's bloggers! Sookie, where is your regular pie update? Where are the beach party invites? Are people still alive out there or have you all been eaten by sharks?

Is anyone else bugged that there is currently no door open? We are completely locked in. It makes me feel a touch claustrophobic. I like being able to leave even though it's fake. It enables me to pretend that I have a choice, at least for a little while.

Anyone out there who wants to chat and is still awake?

Katherine and her four am rambles.

Dmitri, my man! How is the philosophy coming along?

I feel the same. I don't even spend too much time on the other side but just knowing that you can leave is beautiful. How was it growing up on a planet with so many options and choices?

Our options and choices were just as much of an illusion in that world as they are in this one. The only difference really was that the door couldn't literally close on us.

I've never thought about it that way before. What are barriers over there? Money? Passports?

Yes, both of those things. In Russia, many lower classes were not free to leave certain areas. Private ownership of workers was recently stopped, but we were still trying for those owned by the state.

In less specific terms, even when free to move so many people do not. They are tied by property, work, family and responsibility. They think they will leave and talk about it but do not go. Only very few make the journey. I moved to Petersburg when my family was free. Same country, but distance enough to feel free.

Private ownership? Like slaves? That's horrible.

Do you mean your parents? Habe they been owned?

Almost like slaves, but with some more rights. You are bonded to a landowner, and have some work on his land, or whatever he is requiring. It is like being slave because you cannot break the bond, you must do it, you will be arrested if you leave. But it is different because you are paid somewhat, and have your own rights to land, property, protection.

It is for example, you cannot pay rent, you are in debt, you will starve, so you can make a deal with your landowner that you will stay, but be bonded to them, owe them the debt in another way. That was the situation of my parents, and as their child the debt would be passed on and on endlessly, and it is not that it is ever paid off.

You are a slave due to contracts? Am I getting this right?

You are a slave due to your debt, due to poverty and a corrupt state. Although yes, you agree to the contract. Another illusion of choice. The alternative is to be on the streets, and also they will report your debt to the police, and if you cannot pay - which of course is impossible - then you repay the debt to the state by building roads or such. This is not a good fate.

Do you think real freedom exists?

I am inclined to say no. Do you?

No, I don't think so either. Not even the rich and powerful are free. Maybe they are even less so with the need to keep their wealth and influence.
