No. It's not. It's technology. It's a device, used for communication over distances. I'm going to assume that you're from a time or place that hasn't developed such a device yet. It's not magic, it's just a thing. A thing made by someone from pieces of metal and plastic... and some other stuff.

You can use it to communicate through text or speech - as we're talking to each other right now - with anyone else who has a similar device. Like yourself, I'm on a different part of this island, standing, talking through another phone over this open connection that you activated. By accident I'm guessing.

Also, sorry, I'm the Doctor, hello.

...How can something like this not be magic? [His voice comes off more baffled then anything else.Followed by a few moments of silence, clearly trying to process everything.]A ..what made of what?

...I'm Merlin.

Clarke's Law. "Any sufficiently advanced form of technology is indistinguishable from magic." But in same worlds, the reverse is true. So... "Any advanced form of magic is indistinguishable from technology."

People adapt, they learn how to use the world's resources around them, to develop new things, ideas, inventions. As more knowledge is gained, more advanced and complex things can be accomplished. Something as simple as a... as a... a cup! Yes a cup. Something as simple as a cup, had to be thought up and designed and crafted - what did people do before cups? How did they drink? How did they... give toasts!

As cultures grow, they think more of what they need. What if we do that? What if it this way? How do we make this better? Faster? More efficient? Knowledge. Ohh knowledge. It's the most powerful and driving force in the Universe.

[There's a long pause and then]

I'm sorry. Hang on a minute! Did you say Merlin?

Clarke? No. He's a writer.

Well, it, it was supposed to be a thing, an analogy. It may not have come across right.

Ha, Merlin. You're not me are you? No, I suppose you can't be, I'd remember that... unless a future version of me ended up calling himself Merlin again? But then you'd know what I was going on about, so, then...

Hello, Merlin, you're a long, long, long way from home. Or a long, long, long when from home.
