accidental voice post
[Miguel is in the room in Henry's apartment that he's staying in, making his way through a six-pack of beer and reading through a load of science papers he found in Sarah's book collection earlier in the day. His phone is playing a load of twencen music, a playlist that he'd found that bounces between songs from the 1950s right up to the year 1999. Miguel doesn't know all of them, but Xina has taught him enough of them, and he's drank enough beer that he's singing along softly with some of them. His voice is okay but it's quiet and completely untrained so he's not able for really low notes or any super-high ones - he just doesn't sing those bits.]

[Songs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

***

[OoC: I had a threadstart up for Miguel where he went back to his normal age, but he wanted to do more stuff as a teenager, so I checked with Amy and then took the threadstart down earlier today. I'll put it back up soon :)

Enjoy Xina's music taste!]

I won't lie to you, man... The Beatles are the fucking worst. John Lennon is... He's just the worst.

[slightly fuzzy, since he's not right beside the phone]¿Qué? Oh, mi teléfono...

[suddenly a good bit clearer] What?

Every other song you played, well they're great. Just... The Beatles, man. I can't get behind them.

Either way, you have an amazing voice. Flaunt it, brother!

Okay... I didn't make the playlist, it was on the phone.

That is an absolute shame, Miguel. Especially if you could go back at any time and go directly into your defense, singing along to songs that you know, or something that moves you, is so beneficial.

mm...

[he trails off for a moment, then starts talking like nothing just happened]

I borrowed some of the papers in your collection earlier, old twencen science journals. They're pretty good, for being really out of date.

Hey, you're welcome to update them if you feel up to it. Were they the ones in my handwriting? Or the type "purchased from somewhere" kind?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]miguel_ohara
2022-01-24 01:19 pm UTC (link)
I think they were purchased. Or else you went to a lot of bother getting your handwritten journals printed like this. The pages are all shiny.

At least it isn't newsprint, the ink that was used was a carcinogen.

Then you can mark those up as much as you want. I was just going to ask if you were updating mine to highlight it. But you absolutely don't have to do that.

Yikes! Well that would explain a lot.

[info]miguel_ohara
2022-01-22 06:13 pm UTC (link)
La Bamba is a type of dance from Mexico, so that bit means 'The Bamba'. And you need to know some more of the rest of the verse for the line to make sense. So it's 'Para bailar La Bamba', then 'Para bailar La Bamba' again, and then the next lines are 'Se necessita una poca de gracia, Una poca de gracia'. All that together means "To dance the Bamba, To dance the Bamba, needs a little grace, a little grace". Because songs like repeating themselves, I guess.

It's Spanish, not Mexican. The country Spain used to rule Mexico, so they made everyone speak Spanish. It's a good song, though.

¡Muy bien!

Uh, yeah, I guess so. He showed me how he was fixing his broom, and he's met Mouse, who's the biggest dog. And we talked about Latin. Spanish is better.

[info]littlesirius

Why would you call a big dog MOUSE?? You should call him Dragon or something else big! Is Spanish good for casting spells like Latin is? I have to learn Latin because of that.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]miguel_ohara
2022-01-23 09:30 pm UTC (link)
That's the joke. Mouse is massive but he's got the same name as a tiny rodent. And... I have no idea. If you translated a spell from Latin into Spanish, would it still work? The words would mean the same thing, right?

I had to learn some Latin because it's how different animal and plant species are named. Humans are Homo sapiens, so that's Latin for "wise man". But it's not like learning a language.

Oh a joke name! Does he mind having a joke name? I don't know if you can translate a spell like that...if you just say the words in English not Latin it doesn't do any magic.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]miguel_ohara
2022-01-24 01:21 pm UTC (link)
I think he likes it. And why does the language matter? I'm not casting spells every time I talk about different plants or animals, am I? No. No, I'm not.

[info]littlesirius
2022-01-24 03:29 pm UTC (link)
[he giggles] No because saying homo sapiens isn't a spell! You have to say exactly the right words.

[info]miguel_ohara

But what if you're a, a Mexican doing magic, or from Russia or Kenya or wherever, does it all have to be in Latin?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]littlesirius
2022-01-24 04:16 pm UTC (link)
Um...I don't think so. It's not Latin in every country. Maybe...maybe just in the countries where Ancient Romans used to live?

[info]miguel_ohara
