Summary: Nicolette is trying to overcome her fear of the dark.
Deep inside every living creature, there is the fear of the unknown. For most, this fear could be distilled down into a deep-seeded fear of the darkness because the darkness almost always holds the unknown. Nicolette had always been afraid of the dark as a child so, when her ability to manipulate the darkness finally materialized, she used it with caution. Her fears never truly receded as she aged, though she was able to push them aside and grow through her use of darkness as a weapon. Ever since her heaviest training session with Vasily, Nicky had felt her fear of the dark resurfacing. She'd always treated the chill of the shadows with reverence, because she didn't want her fears to get the best of her. Over her last mission, she'd realized just how far that reverence had shifted back into anxiety. She'd hesitated at least twice on a mission and, while it was nearly imperceptible by the handler who had run her op, she was able to recognize her problem. On he way home, she'd decided to try to work on conquering her fear again. Otherwise, she'd become a liability. Normal people would seek a therapist, but Nicky wasn't what you would call normal. How normal could you be when you could do the things she could do? Her training today was very simple. Most of the room Nicolette was in was darkened, minus a cone of light in which she was seated on a large pillow. She was seated in a meditation position, focused on her breathing and trying to sink herself into a state similar to the one she had when she trained with Vasily. She wanted to try to get in touch with that inner darkness and learn to be comfortable with it again. Shadows stirred at the edge of the light, coming together to form tendrils. They slithered at the edges of the light, but never crossed into it. Slowly, with every exhale of breath, Nicky tried to reach out further and further with her abilities. She was trying to feel every shadow in the room. Those that she had solidified undulated with the beat of her heart, pulsing with every thump and sliding along the edge of the light as if testing the bright spot for weakness. With one last deep intake of breath, Nicky willed the shadows inward. The darkness came rolling into the cone of light, crashing into her like a tidal wave. They washed over her, chilling her skin and almost causing her teeth to chatter. She tried to stay relaxed, but the fear of the darkness always lingered. Her breathing started to quicken and she could feel herself in the early stages of panic. She focused on keeping herself calm while the shadows wrapped her in their cool embrace. Nicky phased into the darkness, using her teleportation to exist in two different points in the room at the same time. It numbed her body and forced her mind to focus. She wanted to force the fear out of her, but felt she was loosing the battle. Her heartbeat quickened and her breathing became even more uneven. Her attention started to splinter as she tried to focus on slowing her breathing while keeping herself phased. The mass of shadows that she had covered herself with began to wriggle and lash out wildly. Her body returned to a solid state and she began to shiver. The darkness began to peel away from her like layers peeling away from an onion and Nicky felt her fingers going numb. She was hyperventilating. She tried to power through the fear and anxiety, but found that it was too overwhelming. A dizziness was starting to hit her and Nicky forced the darkness away. It raced away from her body and retreated from the light, leaving her alone again in the light. Beads of sweat covered Nicky's body as she shivered and tried to regain her composure. Her hair was damp with moisture and clung to her face and neck. She brought a shaky hand to her face and covered it, trying to gain control of her body before she caused herself to pass out from panic. |
