[ Umbra & Void ]
Who: Nicky Ashford & Bryan Murphy
When: Friday, February 2nd; 8am
Where: Limbo: The Shooting Range
Rating/Warnings: Pretty PG
Summary: Nicky is practicing her knife throwing.
So many things hadn't been feeling right lately. With all the things going wrong, the one thing that still felt right was using the skills she'd been taught over the years. Unlike the "powerhouse" agents, Nicky had been trained specifically in unarmed or barely-armed combat and covert techniques. She was not a blunt instrument of total destruction. She was the carefully crafted blade that was thrust by the invisible assassin. That's what they kept telling her anyway. Nicky didn't quite believe that so much as she did that she was a simple tool meant to be used alone or nearly alone. Yes, she had the training she needed to work in a group, but her skills were unique enough to keep her alive solo. These were the things that she rolled around in her brain while she stood facing a target down range. She wasn't really concentrating, but she wasn't slacking off either. Everything going on while she moved was more of a learned reflex. The target was pulled in at least half the distance in order to accommodate her weapon. Guns were always locked away 24/7, but the knives she trained with could be signed out for a few hours with no argument. How else was she supposed to keep her skills sharp if she wasn't allowed to practice anyway? Being a long-term agent in good standing did have its advantages, she supposed. The knives were laid out in a row on a small table beside her. She had to take a good look at them all and check their blades and balance before she did any throwing. If one of them happened to be damaged, it might actually make the training dangerous. The knife could snap rather than digging into the target. That kind of injury would be so fun to explain to her handlers, particularly if it was on someone else's body. Nicky picked up each knife to examine them, spinning them in her hand expertly before placing them back on the table. There was a wide variety of knives, from traditional throwing knives to balisongs and even one gigantic Bowie knife. Since you never knew what kind of knives you would find in the field, she was expected to be proficient in the most commonly used knives. Her preference was, of course, a standard throwing knife but those were never found in the real world. Well, not unless she made her own. After that, she really liked the switchblade. It was more likely to be seen in shady situations and, well, she just liked the knife. It was unassuming and easily dismissed by those who didn't know how to use them. When she was finished examining her weapons, Nicolette went to work with her training. She started with the smallest knives, spinning them around in her hands again like she was performing tricks before letting them lose down range. Each one dug into the target and she happily tuned the world out for a little while. Training like this allowed her to shut off the overactive parts of her brain and just feel the motions. It was actually rather comforting. |
