Nicky hadn't been aware than anyone was watching her. She had been so fixated on the knives and the motion of throwing them that she lost track of her surroundings. In the field, that could be deadly. Here, while training, that was something she could afford. It helped that she'd been alone on the range anyway. No one had tapped that two hour slot she'd slid her name into so she just went with it. Her handlers expected them to fill their time with training of any type. Nicolette chose this, because it was a stress reliever. Destruction was something she slightly enjoyed. Shredding tissues or cutting something up with scissors were things she had done as a teenager to cope with her stress. This was just the advanced version of that habit and it happened to have a reason behind it so she didn't seem strange.
When Void finally did make his presence known, Umbra tried to give him a friendly smile, "Oh, no. I just took an empty slot. It wasn't assigned or anything."
This was the first time the two had met in person and, while she had sent a few messages, she didn't really know enough about him to make any snap decisions. Nicky was a "wait and see" type of person. She would gather information about him and collect it for a while until she finally made a decision as to whether or not she liked him. She'd done the same with others here and that might explain how she had such varied and interesting friends.
"I can take a break if you're needing to do something assigned. I was just trying to get some practice in since I hadn't done it in a while." Again, she smiled, but she always felt her smiles were so insincere. It was as if they were plastered on just to make her look happy when, in reality, she was just neutral. It wasn't so much happy as safe and not in danger. The whole thing was hard to describe to someone who wasn't feeling it the way she did.
