WHO: Spike and Kathy.
WHAT: Just hanging around!
WHEN: Evening.
WHERE: Streets; outside of a bar.
RATING: PG-13.
STATUS: In progress.

As much as people might have complained about this place, Spike couldn't find too much to run his mouth about. Well, all right, strike that. He could; he was Spike, after all - he could find reason to complain about anything if he felt like it. However, for a situation where a bunch of people got yanked from one place to another, he supposed it wasn't all that horrible. They gave him a room, Buffy and some of the others were around and, most importantly, he was not any deader than he gave himself credit for. Considering that he was on the verge of inevitable death (yes, Spike does think positively before battle, thank you for asking) before he showed here, Spike wasn't going to be the one to raise his fists in protest about what had happened here.

Not yet, anyway. If he got bored, Spike would put up a bigger show of it. Kick some trash cans around, start up a brawl somewhere. It'd be fun.

Legs spread out across the steps that led up into the bar, Spike pried out a cigarette from his pocket and pushed it between his lips. The little girl that he was sharing a flat with had loaned him a few under the assumption that it was better to share than have him go around and steal double of her belongings behind her back. It probably was. Spike might have played the part of the hero, but he certainly wasn't going to sit around and go by all the fucking rules people threw at him. Yes, he stole. He lied. He cheated. That was expected of him. He wasn't Angel, not by a long shot, and he didn't plan on ever being anything like him.

Screw redemption. Screw being a Champion. He had cigarettes and beer. It was all he needed.

Cigarette lit, Spike leaned forward and watched as a few people lazily made their way down the dark street. It was almost like L.A. Lots of people, plenty of buildings. It just seemed to be lacking in the demon and vampire variety. Spike almost missed it. Almost.

It wasn't that she didn't think, it was more that Kathy thought the regular amount of human activity level before going with emotions all the way. It would be the trouble of her. Had lead to her death in another life, but that was no matter now. And not really a thought the fourteen year old was concentrating on as she walked sulkily down the street. It wasn't as if she'd intended to stay out this late. The city was a large one and after walking to the park, she'd walked aimlessly and had gotten lost in her thoughts and her emotions. And had managed to get lost again. However, she was learning how to figure out the maps on the PDA. She would find her way back before it was too late.

At the moment walking was fine. She was upset. Which made sense, irritated more likely, but upset worked. She refused to cry about it. She'd known this would happen. Yet she'd taken the risk for the moment and it was worth it, and she wasn't going to ruin the moments with regrets. Her time spent with younger Wesley had been absolutely glorious, lovely. Fun. Exciting. New. And she missed him. And as she predicted she'd automatically gone back to yearning from afar of the elder Wesley. Not managing to to quite screw up her courage to comment on his return post. Because she'd been struck with the fact. She was all alone in this place. Liam was gone. And she'd searched. Loosing her brother once, she wasn't inclined to lose him again. Yet couldn't find him. Doyle and Cordelia were also gone. And this Christopher? Was a female, a Perry Christina. She wasn't the one she'd come to know, to come to know she could rely on. So essentially she was completely alone and that scared her. She had never been alone before. It always been father and mother and friends and people at Church, the servants. And Liam, Liam for all her life. She'd never been far from her brother, until the moment their father had cast him out. Kathy had never been without someone guarding her. And she'd been the obediant child. Never straying far or running off when her father had forbidden it.

She didn't know quite what to do with herself. But tears weren't going to help any, so she wiped them from her cheeks. She'd figure things out. She knew how to defend herself from vampires with holy water, how to make a stake, and how not to burn water on a stove. She really would find a way to figure things out.

The sight of a little girl wandering about in the dark was hardly an appealing thing for him. Spike had seen too many young people become terrorized for going out on their own. He had seen it. He had done it. Back in his time, when souls weren't the new thing, Spike would have loved to take advantage of a situation like this. Seize the little girl, find out who she belonged to, and then play with both the family and the child until he got bored before ultimately killing them both off in a slow, painful manner. He had long since moved past the cruel deeds that his former self preferred to commit. Now he was more concerned about the kid wandering about than amused. Damn, damn, damn! That meant he had to do the right thing by being all worried and responsible! Stupid, shiny little soul!

"Hey you," he started, sliding off the steps. Giving his cigarette one final drag, Spike dropped it onto the pavement and moved toward the girl, smoke streaming through the air as he exhaled slowly. "What are you doing running about out here by yourself? Don't you know what time it is?" He'd ask her about the little tears later. Kids often cried. It was more important that he made it known that she was being an idiot by running around like this first. Very, very important. Stupid little girl.

Kathy startled slightly, breath drawn in, and eyes widening just a bit, before she forced herself to calm down. In her head she heard both Liam and Wesley warning to keep walking, but she was currently upset and also defensive at this man's accusation. And a part of her, who truly wasn't as irrational as one would think (she took lessons from television to heart, it did know what it was talking about, so it seemed) realized that if he wanted to harm her, he could easily grab her if she tried to run away, and that might even anger him. If he reached towards her, she was stabbing him with the stake-vampire or no-and fitting herself into a tight corner to hide until the trouble passed.

Wrapping one hand around the straps of her small purse and wrapping the other partially around her middle, she stared up at him with solemn eyes, taking a slight step back when he had moved forward but making no other movement. "It is no' as if I was askin' ta find meself lost." Her typical lilting accent slightly sharp. Taking another small breath, upbringing slammed sharply behind emotion. Just as automatic. There was no reason to place her sadness and lonliness ... or irritation at his point, on him. It wasn't his fault and it wasn't polite. Especially when he'd only expressed concern for her person ... thus far. "'M sorry." She muttered. "Before I was lost but now I have figured out the map an' I will be on me way. Thank ye for yer concern."

She wasn't certain how people in this time parted, exactly. She thought it was rude to just walk away, just like that, so she gave him a little curtsey, gave him a pointed look that was unconsciously, very much her brother's. And turned around and walked away. She had no idea where she was going but she'd figure it out, however. she wasn't about to tell him that.

The little accented girl wasn't going to get away from him that easily. Spike didn't know why, but there seemed to be something about her that he couldn't quite place. Something familiar. He rarely got those sort of feelings in the pit of his cold, dead stomach. Yet when he did? It was usually a point for the vampire to follow up on. Spike quietly leaned against the railing to the set of stairs he had been sitting upon and waited for the girl to advance a bit away before he shoved up and began to pursue her.

Spike was an expert at tracking. Once he got a scent, that was it. The target was royally fucked. Particularly if he wanted to find them without being seen or thought of. As this was a mere child, Spike didn't seem particularly interested in going the scary vampire route. It probably wasn't all that encouraging having a stranger stalk her either, but at least he was making his presence known rather than giving her the jump.

He kept at it for a few moments before giving off a heavy sigh, stepping forward, and pushing his way ahead of her. It may have appeared as though he intended to surpass her on his own merry way to wherever it was that he alone may have been going. The abrupt turn to face her would have easily disrupted that thought if it were to have made a visit.

"Mind if I take a look at that map of yours?"

For a moment she thought he would just let her go; however, when he followed her, her heart began beating more than just a bit faster as her feet picked up the pace. She had heard stories about things like that in her natural time and seen things like that in movies. It almost never ended well. Kathy felt even more ridiculous for not paying attention to the setting sun but she refused to allow herself to cower in fear, no matter how terrified she was feeling.

When he moved in front of her, she let out a low breath of relief that was stilted earily and turned into a slight hiccup of fear, a high-pitched gasp, when he turned abruptly to face her. Immediately she back-pedaled and it was a mircale that she hadn't fallen flat on her arse.

"Yes." She said, her chin firming just slightly. "I do. If'n yer so curious about it, ye should take a gander at yer own." Kathy replied. Apparently being polite meant nothing. "It should be in the device." This time, she didn't move. She would wait for him to leave first and if he made a move towards her she would stab him.

Feisty little thing, she was. Smirking, Spike held his arms out at his sides and shook his head. "As it appears, I'm completely without my faithful device." People must have thought that they were odd. Two people with opposing accents that sounded terribly out of place in the city that they were in - which was, in itself, terribly out of place - standing out arguing over PDA's and maps. Spike knew that putting himself on display while holding up a young girl was far from the wisest of tactics, as some people were likely to notice how he was complicating things for the child, but he didn't much care. She had struck that curiosity of his. Not many things did.

"We're all new here," he pressed, feigning an innocent look, "you wouldn't want me to get lost, now would you? There are lots of nasty little buggers running round here. Something might eat me."

Ha. Now that was funny.

Kathy worried her bottom lip for a moment, a deplorable habit that she found herself getting into from time to time now that her parents weren't around to stop it. He had a point. Something could eat him and she would feel just horrible-more than in fact-if she learned that he died when she could have helped him. At the same time, well ... television was rather helpful. Good breeding and genuine human curtesy warred with common sense. The second, and a good helping of the first, beat out the third quite easily. It was the Lord's wish to help those in need.

Slowly, she walked towards him. When she was a little bit more than a grown-up's arms length away, Kathy said, "I am helpin' ye 'cause it is the right thing ta do. If ye try an' hurt me, I will scream me head off an' then, I will stab ye." Her tone could have easily fallen into deceptive calmness if she had a few more years of experiance. As it was there was a slight tremor that shook through her voice, nevertheless, she managed to raise solemn eyes that looked into him that showed her complete and utter seriousness.

Opening the device, she walked closer and extended it for him to see when she was just a few feet away. She wasn't going any closer. She would drag her Mary Jane's into the sidewalk if he wanted to grab at her by the arm.

Spike couldn't help but smirk at the child. She was cute, for a little annoying kid. Saying she was going to stab him? It probably would have offended most people. Spike instead found it to be an admirable trait. He cheerfully leaned forward to examine the PDA. Rather than just picking out a location and being done with it, Spike cast Katy a bit of a glance and raised his scarred brow.

"Did you show up here alone then? Loads of us have, it seems. Quite unfortunate." Not for him. Buffy was around somewhere, even if Spike had not really seen her much as of yet. Plus Andrew the Annoying, Red the Psychowitch, and Faith the Semi-Decent Slayer were around too. Not a bad number, even if Willow and Andrew sometimes got on his nerves. They were useful enough, either way.

The corners of Kathy's mouth turned down ever so slightly when he smirked at her. She couldn't quite help the sigh that escaped, even as her brows furrowed slightly and her lips twisted in a sort of concentration mixed with irritation. What did he want with her? Surely not to make idle conversation. And that was part of her irritation. That there wasn't a polite way to ask him what he wanted or tell him to get on and leave her alone. That she refused to move until he was very far away from her. Therefore, she was pretty much stuck where she was until she thought of something else or he stated his business and left.

At his question, she hesitated before nodding very slowly, uncertainty obvious in her watchful gaze, "Aye. I did." It was on her tongue to say more. Like about how it wasn't fair that whatever or whoever was doing this was keeping families apart. Or pulling children her age and younger. That they stuck people in rooms with complete strangers. That she liked the few people she'd met so far. And it was probably obvious that for a moment she was going to say more but she didn't. He features smoothed into not exactly neutral but polite blandness, and she added nothing else to her three words. Except, "Am I allowed ta go now?" Okay, well, Heaven and her mother forgive her but she wanted him to go away.
