WHO: Rose and Jonathan
WHAT: Revenge possibly? She's broken, and he's...Mad
WHEN: July 2nd, Evening, after they speak

WARNINGS: None yet, may turn violent

She couldn't think of he last time she had cried this heard. Perhaps when she had been pulled away from the Doctor and that had ached. But this? This was like torture. It had been on her mind a lot recently and she knew there was a chance that one day he'd forget all about her. Even with the Doctor's reassurance she knew he couldn't promise what his future would hold. Each regeneration changed him and changed how he felt.

One day she'd be a distant memory.

She was trying to keep calm and finally managed to do so when her eyes closed. Curled up on the sofa, the tears were finally defeated by exhaustion.

"Sorry, it's a...habit,"he said, refering to terrifying the shit out of someone. "Rose, I'm not a nice man. I never have been. I've done...at lot of horrible things because I can, because it makes me feel good to watch others suffer. I'm one of the bogymen in the bedtime stories that gets told to children so they'll behave. I can't change that over night...I can try, and that's what I'm offering you. Me, trying to be a friend. I'll screw up, I'll hurt you...but please, give me this chance...help me not be that man,"

When she mentioned hurting himself he snorted, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and dabbing at his lips with it. "What does it matter, if the evil man bleeds a little?" he muttered.

And there was that voice, which really did sound like the Doctor, making her stall in wanting to agree with him. He had scared her. Terrified her. She shouldn't be so accepting of him. And yet with the way he was begging her, and with the compulsion to tell the truth, she couldn't help but wonder if she should.

"I...I don't know if I can," she said honestly, her head and heart still arguing. "And it matters. You shouldn't hurt yourself even a little."

"Would your Doctor believe in giving someone a chance?" he asked softly, not looking at her, but instead at their hands, tears falling against her skin. It was a gamble, a long shot, especially if she didn't clue in to what he meant and took it the wrong way.

There was a very thin line, between what he was trying to say, and what he didn't want to say, to push her in the wrong direction.

He didn't even know why he was bothering. Why twist her around and turn her feelings back towards him when he could have been done and through with her, using her and leaving her as a broken shell like he had so many others in his long career.

It wasn't just her connections, though Jonathan would kill to have those...the part of his brain damaged mind that felt people rather then saw them singing every time Jack and the Doctor were near...

...it was her. There was a light, in her that drew him in. Not romantically, not even platonically. A large part of him still wanted to destroy her, to snuff out that light, to kill it before it killed him.

And yet...and yet a deeper part, the lost, scared Southern boy who still cringed every time a bird came too close, who cried in the dark each time he heard the Lord's Prayer or a church bell ring...that part needed her close. To bathe in that light, to be filled and warmed by it.

To be free.

It was the same part of him drawn to Justin, to Harley. The same part of him that still held hope that there was good int he world, that he could be saved. That lost little Keeny child who was almost abandoned at birth, crying out to be loved.

Before it was too late.

She glanced up when he questioned her about the Doctor. She hated to admit it but he would give someone a chance if the situation called for it. Second chances, no. He had made that clear when he regenerated that he didn't do second chances.

But was that what this was? She hadn't really given him a proper first chance in all honesty.

"He would."

She wasn't going to risk him going nuts by sleeping with him again.

When Jack came home to find the lock had been opened, he inwardly cursed himself for having gone out instead of staying in. With all those horrific comments Crane had made, he should've been right there at home with her. He left his grocery bag outside the door so the crinkling plastic wouldn't alert whoever had broken in. Maybe he'd be done dealing with it before the ice cream melted too much. (Did anybody do ice cream deliveries? He should look into that. Then someone could be home with their feelings but still get ice cream...)

He drew his gun and walked as quietly as he could. It didn't take long to hear voices in Rose's living room. It didn't sound like Rose was in any serious distress, but she might've just been keeping calm and playing along with whoever had broken in.

Of course, once he saw who was actually in there, and that the human-monster was touching Rose, he was pretty damn furious. He stood in the doorway, gun pointed, waiting for the sight to cause a reaction instead of yelling.

Jonathan felt Jack as soon as the man had entered the house, Jack's very being reacting off the damaged parts of his brain, electrical signals singing in the damaged, dying and dead parts of his brain, ions excited by Jack's very existance.

It was a reaction he got when around Batman, when around the Doctor...only instead of the fear and terror the other two inspired, Jonathan's brain sung songs of gods and awe, desperate to worship the creature that made them feel so good.

He jerked away from Rose, standing, watching the door where Jack would appear, raising his arms as the man stepped into the room, gun drawn. His mouth worked, rational, mortal thought fighting against instinct and the subconscious that believed in legend and myth, one half trying for reason, the other screaming at him to shut up and bow down lest he be killed on the spot.

Before Rose could respond Jonathan had moved away quickly and was staring at the door. When she turned it wasn't to see something she had expected. Frowning, she stood and took a step near him.

"Jack put your gun away."

Jonathan may had hurt her but he had really pulled on the empathy she had within her. Had she been thinking properly then she would be welcoming Jack in.

"Please just put it down."

At least Crane wasn't touching Rose any more, or Jack might have found it extremely difficult instead of just plain difficult to consider lowering his gun.

"Please don't," Jonathan whimpered, cringing a touch at Jack's anger. The subconscious, lizard part of his brain that lit up around the immortals, the 'old gods' and those touched by certain things was screaming at him, begging him to shut up, to bow down...to curl up and die before he pissed off the God before him.

His rational half was wondering what the hell he had smoked that any part of him even thought about bowing before any man, even the guy with a gun.

"I know you're not going to hurt me but that doesn't mean you shouldn't put it away."

She turned to look at Jonathan, sure she saw fear in his eyes. Her heart went out to him and when she looked back to Jack it could possibly be clear to him if he looked carefully enough. It was there in her eyes that he had gotten to that part of her that longed to protect and care for the vulnerable.

"Please Jack."

Apparently, Crane had really done a number on Rose to get her sympathetic towards him after everything he'd said.

"Safety's on-- for now. But I'm not putting it away. This guy is a monster-- and I mean literally, Rose. He can mutate into this giant rampaging scarecrow monster. I would've thought it was just a split personality type of deal, but then he went acting like a complete monster to you without changing. One of us needs to be armed while he's around."

"I won't hurt her Jack, not again. I apologized to her...I'm not good with people and I'm still learning how to be good,"

He looked at Rose, eyes begging her to help him calm Jack down, he was afraid that Jack was going to change his mind and just shoot him anyway.

She turned just in time to catch his pleading gaze. She looked down to the floor then walked to Jack's side, placing her hand on the gun.

"Please Jack. He just became angry, I hurt him. It's understandable."

He lowered the gun towards the floor when Rose touched it, but he didn't put it away.

"No, Rose, you didn't. He hurt you. He got angry because he'd made assumption despite what you'd already made obvious, and when you stood your ground, he tore into you with the worst insults he could come up with. You didn't hurt him. And you're damn right you won't hurt her again, Dr. Crane."

Jonathan lowered his head again, wincing with Jack's words. It wasn't as bad as the Doctor's anger, which ripped through him violently, but the words still hurt, striking him.

He hadn't noticed the last time they met, how easily Jack played upon emotions that were supposed to be dead, too tired, too distracted from the transformation into Scarebeast to notice.

It was...off putting, to know there were at least two people in this world who affected him in such a way. In Gotham, it had only been Batman, easily avoided unless intentionally sought out.

This...was not good.

She wasn't aware of just how she sounded right now. It was almost like when she was defending the Daleks to the Doctor back when she first met one. She had thought herself so strong that even now, the thought that she had been used, her empathy had been used, was not something she believed.

"Does he look like he's going to hurt me?"

"I can only go by the way TMI messaging, but from what I read? It's not your fault that he turned what was clearly a conversation purely about casual sex into now we're together and if you don't want to be, I'm going psycho on you."

He scoffed. "Wants to change. Right. Rose, he's some kind of psychotic psychiatrist. You don't think he's perfectly capable of telling you what you want to hear? He already got two people to sleep with him playing the embarrassed virgin. He gloated about it when I tried to get ahold of you to warn you. Now he breaks into our house after the way he talked to you?"

Jonathan rolled shifted, rolling his eyes where Rose couldn't see them, before glaring at Jack over her head.

This was getting riddiculous. Yes, he had screwed up, but seriously, it wasn't like he attacked Rose...just poked at the open wounds she wore...she shouldn't have left them so open if she didn't want the scabs pulled off.

"I didn't gloat about it, I simply told you she was busy," he said, slipping his hands into his pockets. "As for breaking in...I was concerned when she didn't answer the door. Also, you all act like I should have known it was casual, she didn't mention this until after, which of course upset me."

"He what? When did you try to get a hold of me?"

She had no idea that he had tried but she hadn't really checked her messages a lot recently. She checked the network on occasion but a lot of the time her PDA just sat beside her or in her bag if she was out. She didn't even have it with her when she went to meet him. His response about why he just came in started those alarm bells again but she also thought it was plausible. Maybe she had fallen asleep deep enough that she hadn't heard any noise from the door.

"See he was trying to help, Jack."

"From the sounds, when you were in the middle of screwing him." He didn't mean to be so blunt, but the damn compulsion... "Which is why I said 'gloating'-- making it clear that I was too late to stop you."

He rolled his eyes where both of them could clearly see. "Help? Right. Hey, why were you concerned? Were you concerned for altruistic reasons, or were you concerned because you might be inconvenienced and have to spend more effort looking for her to torment some more?"

"I was concerned I might have to waste more time looking for her when it could be spent on other things rather then sucking up so that she would be my friend again," Jonathan snapped, unable to stop himself, glaring at Jack.

He really, really hated the truth compulsion.

"Look, we had sex, I said some things I shouldn't have and now I'm making up for it, there's no reason to come storming in here like I tortured your grandmother while you watched," Jonathan said, growing annoyed. "If Rose wants to associate with me anymore that's her choice. Not. Your."

"Wait he posted something when we were...?" She turned to look at Jonathan, clearly upset to hear that. How could someone do something like that then claim to be a friend?

She was so confused. She just didn't know what she was meant to do or how she was meant to do it. Jack seemed to be so angry and yet Jonathan was clearly vulnerable and in need of some support.

"Jack..." she finally said silently. She just didn't know and was worried that she would make the wrong decision either way.

If Crane was going to dodge around with his answers, then Jack would definitely keep up the direct questioning. It was too easy to wriggle out of them otherwise.

"She's my best friend. You were tormenting her, even if it wasn't physically. So why don't you make clear-- what shouldn't you have said and why shouldn't you have said it?"

Jonathan gritted his teeth in frustration, glaring harder at Jack, as if he could turn the man to dust with just his eyes.

"I shouldn't have called her a whore, I shouldn't have implied she was worthless...which she's not," he stressed, telling the truth. "And I shouldn't have implied the Doctor had moved on."

He took a breath after the rush of words, before snapping at Jack. "Anything else, you're highness? Or would you like me to prostrate myself?"

She hadn't realised that she had taken a slight step toward Jack as she waited for Jonathan's reply. She knew he was one of the few she could trust completely no matter what. Really, it was only Jack and the Doctor she ever felt that way about and with good reason even if they were also her biggest weakness. No one could hurt her like them.

"But he has moved on," she said quietly. She had believed that from him at least.

However as upset as she felt, she didn't like that tone he spoke in about Jack. "Jonathan don't talk to him like that."

Sure, he could take advantage of the situation to make Crane answer things honestly, but he couldn't make the guy prostrate himself and he wouldn't if he could. That'd just be pathetic. He rolled his eyes.

It was a relief hearing Rose actually scolding Crane for something instead of defending him after all he'd said and done. Too bad it wasn't her standing up for herself, but he did appreciate it anyway. It was overridden, though, by what she said about the Doctor.

"No, Rose, he hasn't. He really, really hasn't. I have no idea why you'd think that except for this psycho saying it."

"Everything with River? I understand he is a different regeneration but it shows that he moves on." Even if he had tried to tell her differently. She was just so confused right now and wasn't entirely sure about what was going on. She just wanted everything to be easy really even if that sounded pathetic.

"Jack you know him too. He moves on. He forgets. He...picks up new people and River is proof, he falls more in love with them than anyone in his past."
